Defining Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

orporate social responsibility has been identified as one of the top trends that changed business practices. It was a marginal issue only a few years ago, but what has it changed?

I believe that no company wants to be known as 'socially irresponsible'.

Thus, companies started wrapping themselves in the toga of social responsibility.

And many took it very seriously.

CSR awareness started when economists redefined social responsibility as a business company's duty to shareholders to maximize share va lue w it hi n t he limits of the law. Later it metamorphosed into a duty to the larger stakeholders - the consumers. CSR now provides the public with a simple, tangible means of measuring performance. But sadly, f i r ms st i l l cont i nue to ignore the intangibles, such as employee well-being, community relations, the environment…etc.,etc.

The debate about climate change is still raging. Has the ground shifted there?

The public knows the seriousness of the problem

and wants it dealt with.

Some governments have looked at the prospect of enshrining corporate s o c i a l re s p on s i bi l it y i n law by setting down legal requirements for companies to look after the welfare of stakeholders.

But laws and regulations are statements of the minimum behaviour acceptable to t he commu nit y. Give n business's ability to water down implementing regulations and to limit pros e c ut i ons, and mo st i mp or t ant ly t he g ro ss imb a l ance of re s ou rc e s in the large corporation's favour in any dispute with government, the minimum expressed by law often becomes an adornment.

What might be CSR best practices are often watered down into ‘good guys continuing to do what everyone should have been doing.’

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not a mere adornment to enhance the beauty of the corporate altar. It must be a responsibility in itself that corporations and firms should establish within their system of existence in the business world.

Learning the Value of Saving for the Future

Why don’t we teach our kids sound and proper ancial management?

This might sound like quite a complex and intricate a to impart to children who are only starting to learn out ABC’s and 1-2-3’s. But simply put, financial nagement is all about learning how to effectively nage one’s money – learning how to spend and save ely. And there’s really no appropriate age when this uld be taught to our children as they are exposed to ney at such an early age.

Another academic year has just began and millions kids are now going back to their respective schools another year of learning bringing with them their oks, writing pads, pencils and pens, and of course, ir baon or allowance.

Rather than their allowances go to waste with ap toys and trinkets, not to mention unhealthy food, would be better if our kids’ extra allowances go to a ings account of their own for their future use. Not y that, this is one way of educating our kids about value of saving. And I believe it’s never too early to ch kids the value of saving for their future.

the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) entitled “Building for the Future Program for the Filipino Children”.

Together with the Bank Marketing Association of the Philippines (BMAP) and DepEd, the BSP is teaching kids as young as grade-schoolers the value and importance of, as they like to say, “Saving for the rainy days”. This is done by incorporating simple financial teachings in their HeKaSi subject. This way, children learn the importance of saving money and it eventually becomes a habit for them.

The banking industry is also participating in this advocacy program by coming up with special deposit savings products targeted towards kids from 0-12 years.

Several banks, including Philippine Veterans Bank, are now offering these kiddie deposit savings and with the BSP’s approval, account opening rules have been relaxed to further entice kids (and their parents) to go to the bank of their choice and avail of the product.

In the case of Veterans Bank, our kiddie savings called “Bulilit Build-Up Savings” requires just P100 to open and maintain the account. When the kiddie account reaches P1,000, it begins to earn interest just like a regular deposit account. There’s also a 12-month

build-up period wherein the Bulilit Build-Up Savings won’t be charged for dormancy or if the account falls below the minimum maintaining balance. Also, our Bulilit Build-Up Savings is a passbook-only account further strengthening the idea of saving on our kids because with a passbook they won’t be able to easily just withdraw money if they were instead issued ATMs. Kids and parents interested in opening a Bulilit Build-Up Savings simply have to visit one of our 60 branches nationwide and bring along the following: - 1x1 ID picture of the child - Identification of the child (birth certificate and/or school ID)

The company’s CSR policy should function as a builtin, self-regulating mechanism for the company and its critics to monitor and ensure active compliance of the spirit of the law, ethical standards, and international norms.

CSR should embrace responsibility for the company's actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere who may also be considered as stakeholders.

The term "corporate social responsibility" came into common use in the late 1960s and early 1970s after many multinational corporations formed the term stakeholder, meaning those on whom an organization's activities have an impact. Proponents argue that corporations make more long term profits by operating with a perspective, while critics argue that CSR distracts from the economic role of businesses. Others argue CSR is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations.

Why CSR? CSR has become increasingly important because today’s heightened interest in the proper role of business in society has been promoted by increased sensitivity to and awareness of environmental and ethical issues.

Issues such as environmental damage, improper treatment of workers, and faulty production leading to customer inconvenience or danger are being highlighted in the media. Elsewhere, investors and investment fund managers have began to take account of a firm’s CSR policy in making investment decisions. Some consumers have become increasingly sensitive to the CSR programs of the business companies from which they buy their goods and services.

These trends have contributed to the pressure on companies to operate in an economically, socially and sustainable way.

The Xavier Stage (TXS), a repertory theater company of Xavier University, embarks on the promotion of Modern Theater for its 2nd theater season. In the late 19th century, Modern Theater played a significant role in influencing the currents of 20th and the 21st centuries with the introduction of various intellectual, religious and moral challenges and ideologies like Marx’s Das Kapital, Darwin’s The Origin of Species, Frued’s Interpretation of Dreams, and Einstein’s Theory of relativity. Plays of this period are presented in realism as a form. Realism has branched out many theater movements such as naturalism, antirealism, futurism, dada, surrealism, epic theater, expressionism, symbolism, theater of cruelty, theater of the absurd and other experimental theater.

The Xavier Stage has received grants and acclaims to have performed in the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ PASINAYA 2011 and 2012; 6th Tanghal in Mindanao – University Theater Festival last February 2012 in celebration of the Philippine National Arts Month. TXS’ past productions also include Wilfrido Ma Guerrero’s Ulilang Tahanan (The Fordaken House); Dalawang Komedya; Edward Perez’s Barracks ni Tenyente Fuego; isa pa: DALAWA; and Anton Chekov’s Tatlong Mariya (The Three Sisters). This year’s featured films feature varied subjects and delve into the many facets of human culture, emotions, challenges and the celebration of the human spirit. Bernardo Bertolucci’s biopic L’Ultimo Imperatore (The Last Emperor) which won nine Oscars in the 60th Academy Awards is one of the 21 Films to be screened this year. The film tackles the life of Aisin-Gioro Puyi, the last emperor of the Chinese Ching Dynasty.

Seventeen EU member countries have confirmed their participation thus making this film festival a wonderful cinematic tour on culture, art and beauty of the human spirit.

Expected to arrive during the opening night

are dignitaries from the EU Head Office in Manila, local personalities from the government and private sectors as well as members of the academic community. The opening film this year is from Bulgaria entitled The Goat by Georgi Djulgerov. The film is about a billy goat that came down to earth with a mission – to prevent people from finding a treasure hidden near an ancient Thracian sanctuary. The Goat has made the rounds in several international film festivals in Europe, Russia and the United States and has been given a nod by the Bulgarian Film Academy with four nominations- best film, best director, best leading actress and best cinematography.

Below are the plays included in the TXS 2nd Theater Season: Ranindranath Tagore’s THE POST OFFICE – a play that proves the profound wisdom and humanity of the Nobel Prize winning author Tagore.

As a modernist, Tagore, in the play, presents spiritual journey in a timeless and universal scope through the lens of Abel whose innocence comes into terms with man’s exit, Death. The Post Office is adapted by Rody Vera. Play Dates: September 19 – 22, 2012 at the XU Little Theater.

Paul Dumol’s PAGLILITIS NI MANG SERAPIO is a socio-political comment on a variety of unjust realities in the Philippines brought about by government, governance and people. This modern satire is timeless for its depiction of injustices resonates with the country’s current realities; and possibly, its futurity unless corruption is refuted and eradicated. Paglilitis is a tragicomedy and a satire rendered through absurdity and cruelty. The play is a collaborative adaptation by Bart Savior, Efren Mercado and Kristen Senajon. This will also be the first laboratory work of the TXS choreographer’s pool. Mr Rosell Velez will serve as director-apprentice with Mr Savior in this production. Play Dates: December 5-8, 2012 at the XU Little Theater.

Bertolt Brecht’s plays create intellectual climate for social change and for presentation of adequate reality. He calls this the re-functioning of theater through epic theater which aims at assimilating education through entertainment. A RESPECTABLE WEDDING is one of his epic theater plays. In TXS’ version, it is a farce about the upper-class Filipino Family slapped by (im)perfection, sentimentality and morality. A Respectable Wedding is TXS’ contribution to the National Arts Month in February. Through this play, The Xavier Stage also celebrates the world icon Bertolt Brecht; one of the Philippine’s Theater and Movie icon Boni Ilagan and the image of a Filipino Family as a cultural icon. Miserable over her financial inability to buy a Bavarian Crème Donut from a donut store, Mer was about to star in one of the most inspiring business stories this country’s ever heard.

Growing up on farmlands somewhere in the mountains of Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Mer Sudaria is the youngest child of a farmer and a market vendor. Living in remote, rural areas, life has not been particularly kind to Mer and to her family. However, her in-born resilience allowed her to be self-reliant especially towards her scholastic needs. After walking for 40 minutes a day just to get to school, she would sometimes sell pineapples and “santols” to classmates or simply exchange them for paper. These harsh situations were daily scenarios for Mer but in spite of all this, she became a valedictorian in elementary, breezed through high school, and eventually finished college. When she finished school in 2006, amidst family crises and mixing studies with work, Mer decided to move to places with better opportunities. With only P2,500 and all the faith she could possibly acquire, she sailed for Cebu without a single secure job waiting for her.

Settling for substandard living quarters in Cebu, she immediately applied for a job in a call center company after hearing about its high salaries and good benefits.

She got her heart broken however after she realized that she could never afford the application processes, causing a derailment in her plans which eventually led her to take a job as an SM bagger. Bearing with the dismal salary, the overwhelming expenses and the inability to send some money back home, Mer attempted again and again to apply for better jobs. Finally, despite her lack in English skills, Convergys hired her as a customer representative where she, using that resilience and determination once again, worked her way to being the top customer service rep. What Mer had on her mind? Success was finally within her reach! But apparently the Heavens had other plans for her.

It was an invitation to a business orientation by a former call center supervisor that would introduce Mer to the world of Network Marketing—an arena where she realized that there were bigger things she could get and higher heights she could reach. Inspired by the story of William Chavez, a network marketing legend, Mer joined UNO, the premiere networking company in the country, as a part time business builder and for the first few months, her network was steadily growing. However, Mer made a crucial mistake; little did she realize that she was operating her business with the mindset of an employee. She was later overcome with doubts and, like most new businessmen and businesswomen, her enthusiasm slowly died down.

All this changed when she received a text message from Wylie Chavez, William’s older brother. He introduced himself as a businessman in the field of advertising, and offered to mentor her. Wylie emphasized the need for transforming her mindset from an employee’s to a businesswoman’s in order to achieve the results that she wanted. Though reluctant to accept, Mer eventually allowed Wylie to coach her. Slowly and steadily for the next few months, Coach Wylie assisted Mer’s gradual makeover, teaching her brand new concepts and ideas on financial literacy, speakership skills, and leadership abilities among others. This constant coaching progressively became one of the reasons why she would again rise up and become a well-respected leader in the industry.

Fast forward a couple of years later and Mer’s already on the fast track, soaring high and mighty as an UNO millionaire and Top Earner! Cruising through highways and city streets in her brand new Hyundai Tucson, her network has already numbered in the thousands, spreading to six different cities in two major island groups with no signs of stopping!

To top it all off, she has traveled to foreign countries such as Japan, Singapore and the United States—all paid for by the company! But if you ask her, the best rewards didn’t come from the money nor did it come from the fame. It came from helping other ordinary people, people very much like herself, people in need of change and people who also faced cruel situations. Mer has already reached a point in her business career where money and achievements no longer propel her actions. Her passion stems from her genuine desire to give back ten-fold what UNO has given her. She’s frequently giving training and coaching sessions, teaching new entrepreneurs around the country and where she goes, people flock to her to listen to her story.

Looking back to the days where she had virtually nothing, Mer Sudaria is now living a life that’s free, a life that’s filled with faith and a life that’s worth emulating.

Most of the time you can see her walking around carrying a box full of Bavarian Crème Donuts.

This statement resounds a hallowed truth. That indeed, the road to success is wrought with stories of those who have failed miserably, of those who have given up everything in the pursuit of success, and those who have simply lost it all. Such scores of souls who didn’t quite make it have been the reason why others simply do not take risks at all. Some have played it safe, while others do not even think about it (success). This is why they say, the pursuit of success are not for the faint of heart. Only the brave, as they say, and indeed it is.

Today we talk about a group of young professional or yuppies with different backgrounds and very different upbringings. What’s common among these yuppies is that they are self-made entrepreneurs.

Having reached the pinnacle of success is not the thing that amazes. What amazes more is what industry/field they have excelled in. It is the field which many (even you) dread. It is the field of the much derided network marketing. Yes, you heard it right. Network Marketing. Never has a field obtained much derision and consternation than the field of Network Marketing. This is because this field is unfortunately equated with pyramid marketing, which is illegal and very much a scam.

Hence, because of the strong association, many have outrightly pre-judged all network marketing companies as a scam.

This article is devoted to these brave souls who have ventured in this industry. They have proven that, contrary to the popular notion, network marketing is NOT pyramiding (recruit-only based business), and that network marketing is a decent, very legal, and perhaps the only option as a first business, given the fact that a traditional business is very difficult to start and maintain. These brave warriors are proof that even without the means to start a traditional brick and mortar type of business, one can succeed and reach their dreams.

The company they are affiliated with is the company called “Unlimited Network of Opportunities” or UNO. Founded in 2007 by veteran network marketing entrepreneurs William B a r b o, Herbie Chua and Oliver Chua, their aim was to establish a Network Marketing company that is here to stay. A company that will oppose the

common notion that all network marketing companies are fly-by-night companies, whose only intention is to scam people of their money. They envisioned a consumable commodity-based company that is locally based, with excellent product lines, many of which are made in our country, and with a marketing plan equal to none. Their goal is to keep the business simple and profitable.

Five years later, and after celebrating their 5th year anniversary in the much talked about MOA, UNO is as stronger than ever, having created hundreds of thousands of successful distributors. Also, having now breached the global markets such as Hong Kong and US and soon Canada and the Middle East, it is sending strong signals that great network marketing companies need not come from Western countries, because we have one budding in our very soil.

Now we will talk about 3 homegrown yuppies who are certified UNO millionaires, and who are responsible in mentoring aspiring people in Northern Mindanao.

The God-centered Yuppie. Jeroso Iyana Felipe or Jer as his friends call him grew up in Don Carlos, Bukidnon. The 6th among the seven children, he was brought up by his parents who don’t have much in life, Jer strived hard to maintain his academic scholarship and was able to finish his high school and college years in Liceo de Cagayan University. A registered nurse, he opted to work as a call-center agent in Cebu City for practicality sake.

After more than 2 years of working with PeopleSupport, he was invited by his colleague to listen to a business proposition/orientation about UNO, to be given by a former call center supervisor of the same company, William Chavez.

Seeing the unlimited earning potential, he signed up on January 10, 2009. However, the business, which seemed easy at first glance turned out to be difficult, especially juggling his job and the business, hence he had a period of laying low. It was only when Wylie Chavez, already a successful businessman and William’s brother, having seen the great potential in him, sought him out and then offered to be his coach.

With this steady guidance and coaching, his business took off. Hence, 2 years and 8 mos after working as a call center agent, he resigned and took the path of an entrepreneur.

Jer earned his 1st million after 1 year of doing the business. He got his brand new 4x4 strada pick-up.

Through hardwork and commitment, he became one of the Top Earners in UNO worldwide. He’s one of the Millionaires Club and Medical Team members. Currently, Jer is heading the expansion for

UNO Iloilo and was able to help numerous Ilonggos get their dreams in life by simply sharing the business.

Quite a number have already gotten their cars because of him. Also he himself already a house and lot in Bulua, CDOC and a piece of farmland in Bukidnon.

In 3yrs&7mos of doing UNO (with 4,600 and more people under his network), he has earned 4M in cash.

Jer believes that “the greatest failure of man is lack of ambition”. Indeed with a healthy ambition and great vision, Jer was able to achieve something great which has earned the respect of his family and friends.

The Hippie Yuppie. Flashback 2010, John Llaurente was a 19 year old kid who knew nothing about businesses or in building assets and things like that. Like any guy his age, his sole pre occupation were activities that involved finding fun, seeking friends and wasting cash. Then, as fate would have it, he found himself right smack in the middle of the world of network marketing. He was invited to a business meeting in UNO, and the urge to answer the call of entrepreneurship was simply too strong to ignore. Later that day, he officially became one. He was a 4th year nursing student then in of one of the most prestigious nursing schools in the country.

The transition from being an ace student with various extracurricular activities into that of a student entrepreneur was a difficult one. Aside from the amount of study loads and hospital duty hours, he was as an officer in the Student Council. But with UNO in the picture it was a balancing act of sorts.

It took a great amount of discipline for him, but in the end, it was worth it. He managed to perform his functions as a student and student council officer, graduating with decent grades (B’s and up) and leading university-wide projects, while earning P40,000 within the first four months of UNO. Because of this experience, he was able to teach others how to do effective time management as well, teaching others how to blend business life and student life.

From there, life just got better and better. Instead of asking from parents for things, he was now the giver of such. Building assets with UNO allowed him to take care of daily school expenses as well as other projects and activities. It gave him a unique sense of freedom along with an awesome set of lessons that would never have acquired in any university. Now as a yuppie, John drives a brand new sedan, thanks to his UNO business. Rarely does one see a graduate enter the life as

a young professional already having a car. Normally a person has to work for years, like perhaps 10 years or more, before driving a car. Normally one would even start with a second hand unit. But the norm doesn’t apply to those who take risks and are brave enough to journey towards success. The norm did not apply on John. Hence, right now, as John sets his sails toward success, he is confident that young as he is, he will conquer greater heights through UNO. Not bad for a former carefree lad who only wants success so bad.

Mer

The Reluctant Yuppie. Nelson Bonifacio’s early years have been spent embracing the ‘ordinary’.

Blending in was his standard This was perhaps because of the tight norms that he grew up with. This went on for a long time, even as an adult. But despite this, deep within him, was a seed that was dormant and yet ready to surface soon. That seed was the entrepreneurial spirit just waiting to be lit by a small spark that would later on become the flames of success.

However, before being thrust into the path of entrepreneurship, a different path was suggested by his parents. He first started as a full pledged overseas network engineer. Then, because of boredom he sought more challenging jobs and became a call center agent at Convergys. In the early years of his career, he went about being ordinary, unmindful of the seed within. He simply walked through life dictated by companies and bosses .

However, the time for being ordinary was about to end when in February 2009, his co-agent invited him to join her in listening to a business briefing that was going to be given by a certain Wylie Chavez, a successful entrepreneur. That meeting opened a new chapter in his life. That meeting was the spark that would lit the flames of entrepreneurship. From then onwards, standing out among the crowd was not only going to be his calling. Leading a big crowd was to be his fate.

2 years have passed, and still he faces the challenges of network marketing with immense passion. Today, he is driving a brand new Mistubishi Ex, he is the leader and trailblazer of the Iligan market of UNO, and his organization is growing larger than ever. He is setting his sights on new horizons, believing that we are engineered for greatness. “The problem is that we sleep our way through life. Wake up. Do something great. Be different. Stand out.

Life is a one time shot, but if you live it well, one is enough.” All these words coming from a reluctant yuppie, who is now a successful dreamer.

he most common backdrop or foreground would be the beach or at the sea-line. Various Landscape scenes would also make the sunset interesting, such as cityscape, mountains and iconic structures.

The important thing is to capture the colors splashed on the sky as fast as you can considering that such golden hours will occur in a very short time.

Plan the shot ahead of the shoot. It also pays to be very stable when doing this shot, a tripod is a must.

Buildings facades are rarely a setting for sunsets, but upon seeing the reflection it made, it was intriguing enough that the shot was taken when it happened, hence without the benefit of a tripod. This shot was composed with the sky and its refection on the building creating a vision of continuity, an embrace between nature and man-made structures.

This is the second edition of Cookies and Coffee: The Photography Sharing. Here we get to share some landscape photographs and some helpful tips for the aspiring shutterbugs out there into landscapes and nature photography.

Before we go into the details and technicalities, we need to understand how framing an image using a basic rule of thirds first.

Dr. Jeff Ponce of the Oro Photographic Society (OPS) explains this theory: “The Rule of Thirds is the most used rule of composition in photography and the visual arts. It consists of 2 imaginary vertical and horizontal lines equally spaced across the frame.

Align your secondary elements (e.g horizon / sunset) along either

one of the horizontal or vertical lines and your subject (model / interesting focal point) in one of the 4 intersections where the vertical and horizontal lines meet.

Pla c e y o u r h o r iz o n either in the upper third if you have an interesting foreground s u b je c t ( mo d e l / foreground elements) or lower third if you have an interesting background (like a nice cloud formation / sunset). Elements need not be aligned or placed precisely a lo n g th e lin e s o r intersections.�

Now that we have that theory well within our heads, let’s move to some more technical details and techniques for two OPS masters. We begin with Dr. Carlo Romero’s vista.

“The golden hour, oftentimes called the “magic hour”, is roughly the few minutes of light before sunrise and a few minutes after that, and then in the afternoon, a few minutes before and a few minutes after sunset. During these times the sun is low in the sky, producing a soft, diffused light which is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun that most of us

I waited almost 40 minutes in one position w a itin g for the sun to set to an acceptable level for this shot. I used a Canon 5DMkII with a 17-40mm F/4 L USM ultra wide lens with an ND8 circular filter along with a Z-Pro holder holding a 4”X6” 3 stop Reverse Graduated Neutral Density (GND) Filter. Settings: Focal length 20mm, F/16, 13seco nd e xp osu re , Auto WB, ISO 100, Manual Mode.”

Now, what if you only

have a 70-300mm lens during a shoot (I’m really just speaking to myself), would it be possible to shoot landscapes?

I think it’s possible.

I’ll share with you my experience and you be the judge. In one of the OPS trips to Kinoguitan, Misamis Oriental, I was in a fix because my kit lens (18-55mm) is broken and only had a 70-300mm with me. No GNDs either or any filter for that matter.

Then Doc Jeff challenged me, he told me to “shoot with what you have, that’ s the challenge”. So I did just that. I took position well

away from the rest of the group… way, way, away. This is the result (below) and like I said, it is possible, depending on your common sense.
