“The internet nowadays, whether we are amenable or not, is already part of our daily endeavors. Not only for the few but most of us ride the advent of technology. It is the best and quickest way to connect to our love ones locally and abroad.

Transitional shelters MARAWI City -- Transitional shelters which are to be built in Barangay Sagonsongan, Marawi City will be ready for occupancy by December, said Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council Chair (HUDCC) Eduardo del Rosario.

However, other players in the concerned industries should

start to consider these innovations if they want to continue doing good business despite environmental changes.

He said this year’s expo aims to help the chamber in its campaign to make food available, affordable and accessible for all. “Manila sources most of its food from the provinces which means the carbon footprint is higher because of the highest cost of fuel and delivery fees,” he said.

Teves said the Chamber aims to come

up with a responsible agribusiness sector where livestock, poultry, and aquaculture are in support of producing food that is cheap.

Teves said last year’s DATE was most successful in terms of people going to the event as it reached 8,000.

The exhibitors were also able to close sales of up to PHP347 million.

CorporateWorld Globe launches $250-M SEA-US submarine cable wednesday|September 27, 2017

lobe Telecom, Inc. held a ceremonial launch of its $250-million Southeast Asia-United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system in Davao City over the weekend.

“The cable system will reinforce the capacity and resiliency of our information infrastructure, leading to improved communication capacities, better access to basic services, increased competitiveness, and smarter cities,” according to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (in his speech delivered by Presidential

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar).

The SEA-US cable is also expected to generate more investments, jobs and opportunities in Davao region and Mindanao,” he added.

Outside Luzon, the 14,500-kilometer undersea cable is the first direct connection of Globe to the United States via Guam, Hawaii, and California, offering faster transmission of data to the US. It supports ongoing efforts of Globe to enhance its services in Mindanao such as the establishment

of a data center in Davao City designed to address the growing information and communications technology requirements of BPOs, financial institutions, Internet service providers and other content providers in Southern Philippines.

Globe invested USD80 million for this new undersea cable system, on top of the $750-million capital expenditure of the company this year to enhance its data capacities.

The annual investment is being used for LTE deployment using the 700 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, and 2600 Mhz frequencies. Already,

Del Monte’s US unit sells vegetable business DEL MONTE Pacific Ltd.’s United States subsidiary has sold the Sager Creek vegetable business more than two years after it took over the company.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange on Friday, the dual listed fruit canner said Del Monte Foods, Inc. (DMFI) forged a deal to unload its Sager Creek vegetable business to McCall Farms, Inc. for $55 million.

Sager Creek produces specialty vegetables for the food service and retail markets, and manufactures several brands, including Veg-all, Freshlike, Popeye, Princella, Trappey’s and Allens.

The sale will result in the immediate closure of a production facility in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

DMFI will continue to be the point of service for

all retail and foodservice customers of Sager Creek through early 2018, and will work closely with McCall Farms to support a seamless transition.

“This divesture allows us to focus our energy and resources on strengthening our core business, driving innovation, and exploring new products that meet the evolving needs of today’s consumer,” DMFI Chief Operating Officer David Meyers was quoted in the statement as saying.

McCall Farms is a family-owned business that manufactures brands such as Bruce’s Yams, Margaret Holmes and Glory Foods.

DMFI announced in March 2015 that it has taken over Sager Creek for $75 million.

Del Monte Pacific is expecting the US business

through DMFI, which accounts for 80% of sales, to recover in two to three years.

Operations in the United States have seen sluggish sales amid lingering weakness in the canned fruit industry.

It was also affected by supply-related issues that dampened the sales of regional brands in the packaged vegetable category, as well as lower sales of the private label business.

Cebu Pacific includes terminal fee in tickets

BUDGET CARRIER Cebu Pacific said terminal fees are now included in the cost of tickets for all domestic flights out of airports managed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

In a statement, Cebu Pacific said the integration of the domestic passenger service charge (DPSC) in the airline’s booking systems took effect on Sept. 15. This includes tickets purchased from Cebu Pacific from ticket offices, Web site and mobile app.

SM foundation distributes hygiene kits to Marawi evacuees

In an effort to help people who are affected in the Marawi crisis, SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) distributes personal care packages to the evacuees.

A total of 2,200 families received the hygiene kits from SM Foundation, Inc. during the distribution in Barangays Balo-I, Pantar, Tangcal, Maigo, Tubod and Sultan Naga Dimaporo in Lanao del Norte.

Aside from the hygiene kits, SM Foundation also distributed 1,800 mosquito nets to the affected families.

Blind Spots think a minute

jhan tiafau hurst Think a minute…How’s your eyesight and vision? A famous blind woman once said: “It’s better to be blind and see with your heart, than to have two good eyes and not see yourself as you truly are.” As the well-known saying goes, “No one is as blind as those who will not see.” A famous philosopher said that one of the most important priorities in life is to ‘know thyself ’, because when we’re blind to ourselves, we believe that our way is always right. Like the husband who said: “When I married her I knew she was Miss Right, but I didn’t know her first name was Always!”

Many of us are like that wife. We think we see everyone else so clearly, but what about ourselves? We can’t see what we need to correct and change in our own character, so we never

reach our potential and live our life to the fullest.

We handle our marriage and other relationships, raise our children, and go through life never seeing ourselves as we really are. So we develop wrong thinking and bad attitudes that hurt our family members and others. Sometimes we might even believe the lie that we cannot change because that’s just the kind of person we’ll always be. But our blindness, and sometimes pride, doesn’t really want to see and admit our faults. We might we even blame others for our problems and personality.

You see, until we honestly admit that we don’t have a healthy character, we’ll never know we need a doctor to get healed. We need someone else with perfect, clear vision to show us what we don’t see in ourselves. Jesus Christ came to do that for us. He will start changing your heart and help you to humbly admit when you’re wrong. He’ll show you how to better treat your wife or husband and children.

He’ll give you an attitude and heart that easily forgives those people who wrong and hurt you. He’ll give you the strength to always be honest, no matter how much you spots/PAGE 10

The island has shallow clear water and amazing marine life, ideal for swimming, diving and snorkeling and day camping.

On rainy days, soil erosion usually occurs, filling rivers and other waterways with silt and mud, leaving less space for the flow of water. Thus, the natural waterways could not cope with the large volume of rain, which usually leads to massive flash floods in most of the low-lying areas.

Siltation is a by-product of man’s wanton greed to feast on our natural resource – our forests. When we

tamper with the watersheds and the forests, we become vulnerable. And like it or not, we pay the price, sooner or later.

And talking of greed, Governor Bambi could have lost his patience for now of seeing our distorted environmental values still alive and kicking viz-aviz our role to protect the environment.

His Agutayan Island which he dearly promote as one of his tourist attractions may become just an island sans its natural beauty – the clean waters and the amazing corals underneath.

T h rou g h t h e y e a r s , irresponsible and wanton exploitation of the watershed forests were prevalent, leading to river siltation which reduced our land the capacity to hold enormous water load.

The way we treat our natural resources put us in

mind of the bad old days when we were incredibly careless about things like allowing illegal mining and logging to flourish until Mother Earth had no way out but to cry out loud in complete silence.

Yet the throwbacks were devastating as it were. To say it bluntly, we were victims by our own faults. Remember Sendong?

The good governor is extremely bothered, and perhaps you, the reader, and the rest of us have this mind: why, in heaven’s sake, we allowed our natural resource to degrade, to rot into pieces not knowing that pretty soon the brunt of Mother Nature will be on us – any time, sooner, or maybe later.

Let’s heed the call of Governor Bambi. Never again we allow ourselves be caught with our pants down. (ruffy44_ph2000@ yahoo.com)

Surviving without cellphone? have my say

klaus doring I remember the time, when one of my first Japanese friends kept on complaining, why I didn’t operate a cellphone. Believe me, during that time, sometime in 2000 or 2001, I was even typing my articles on an old typewriter from Germany.

My Japanese friend then bought me a computer - and a cellphone! Some other friends congratulated me: “Welcome back to the world!”

Last Sunday, I really got mad.

Attending mass, I observed a family (father, mother, boy and girl) keeping on using their cellphones during almost the whole ongoing mass. Heaven forbid! Even, while falling inline receiving the holy communion, the father kept on texting and browsing in Facebook. Step by step. Just in front of me! Heaven forbid! Guys, why are you still attending mass? Later on, the children kept on playing video games... .

Sometimes, I observed (business-)people operating with two or even more cellphones at the same time.

Even while taking lunch in a restaurant. I asked them: “How did you survive doing business before without these units?”

Believe me or not. The answers have been mostly: I really don’t know!

Doing business nowadays without a cellphone? Even in very private life? Many people

can’t imagine it anymore. I can!

Though Philippines’ cellphone companies really provide us with the widest distribution and the broadest coverage to very affordable charges. I really enjoy, for example, the unlimited call experience - just to mention one. But, not at any time!

Two handsets or even three.

Ok lang, as long it keeps my business running. Again, I am not available 24/7! I am sorry, I am not!

But then it happened!

I thought I have lost my cellphone. I got panic lossing all my important connections.

This “thing” really got a special meaning for me. And here we are: not only for business. Just even for a short “Hi - kumusta ka?” I really felt lonely!

A couple of hours later, I found IT. Misplaced somewhere in the bathroom under a towel in silent mood. Four miscalls (yipee!), several text messages.

Not only “Hi - kumusta ka?” A special evening meeting had to be confirmed... .I only got one big problem. I need a translator, if the words of text messages indeed go weird.

PH posts P28.8-B surplus in August ‘17

T

HE government posted a P28.8billion budget surplus in August 2017 as revenue collections for the month grew higher than expenditures.

Data released by the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) on Friday showed that expenditures in the eighth month this year reached P201.6 billion, up 14 percent from

P177 billion a year-ago.

Revenues rose by 10 percent to P230.4 billion against yearago’s P209.6 billion.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), which collects around 70 percent of taxes, contributed P171.7 billion, nine percent higher than P157.5 billion collections same month last year.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) shared in P38.3 billion, 16 percent higher than its P33.1 billion revenues in August 2016.

As of August this year, the government’s budget deficit stood at PHP176.2 billion, 27 percent higher than the P138.4 billion same period last year.

BIR revenues reached P1.157 trillion,

nine percent up from year-ago’s P1.06 trillion.

BOC contributed P283.6 billion, 11 percent higher than its P254.6 billion collections in endAugust last year.

Expenditures to date reached P1.777 trillion, 10 percent higher than the P1.619 trillion same period last year.

UCPB hails lifting of TRO versus EOs on coco levy THE United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) on Monday hailed the recent Supreme Court (SC) decision to lift the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on two Executive Orders (EOs) issued by former President Benigno Aquino in 2015 targeted for the utilization of the Coco Levy Fund.

In a statement Monday, UCPB said the lifting of the TRO against EO Nos. 179, which calls for the inventory, privatization and transfer of coco levy assets in favor of the government, and 180, directed for the dissolution of Coconut Industry

Investment Fund (CIIF) holding companies with all remaining money and assets to be “transferred, deposited or delivered to the Government in accordance to with the foregoing provisions” is a welcome development.

Air pollution: A public health concern in the Philippines

O

n World Environmental Health Day on September 26, 2017, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Philippines jointly highlight the environmental risk of indoor and outdoor air pollution to the health of Filipinos.

Air pollution is an environmental health risk around the world with 92% of the world’s population exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO’s ambient air quality guidelines. People in urban areas are more exposed to dangerous levels of air pollution than those in rural areas. Air pollutants such as sulfate, nitrates and black carbon, found in both indoor and outdoor settings, are extremely dangerous to people’s health.When the size of the particulate matter in the air is 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) and below, it penetrates to a person’s lungs and cardiovascular system.

According to WHO,the safe level for PM2.5is10 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) of air in a year. In Manila, the

Phoenix officers, employees, partners join international coastal cleanup day Volunteers and organizations collected trash along rivers, beaches, and waterways around the country last September 16 for the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Phoenix Philippines Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, joined in the initiative by conducting coastal cleanup activities in different Phoenix depots across the country.

Approximately 1,800 Phoenix officers and employees, members of the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Coastal Guard Auxiliary, the Philippine Navy, the City Environment and Resources Office (CENRO), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, local coastal barangays, NGOs, and students from Phoenix adopted schools participated in the activities.

On its 32nd year, the International Coastal Cleanup is spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy and is celebrated every third Saturday of September. The Philippines has been

an active participant, holding the record for most number of volunteers for the event in 2015.

Phoenix Philippines Foundation has been conducting these cleanups in their depots every year since 2008. The Foundation also engages in other environmental initiatives such as tree planting activities and the adoption of a Philippine Eagle.

Other core programs of the Foundation are education, health, safety, and outreach.

Leadership Camp for Marawi Youth held

MARAWI CITY, Mindanao Hour — Recognizing the leadership potentials of the youth in helping the government with its rehabilitation efforts for Marawi City and its residents, a four-day leadership camp is being held at Mindanao State University(MSU) – Main Campus.

Dubbed as Bangon Marawi: Youth Leadership Camp, the convergence brings together 50 internally displaced youth staying in evacuation centers in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur. With the theme “Empowering Fillennials Towards Universal Peace and Development”, the

camp is organized by the provincial government of Lanao del Sur, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Lanao del Sur, Project OGOP, United States Grantees- Alumni Association Marawi, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police; and in partnership with Xavier University, MSU, Teach Peace Build Peace Movement and other sectors and agencies.

In the span of four days, the youth participants will undergo workshops and lectures to provide them knowledge in environmental leadership, peace education and community building.

Speaking to the participants of leadership camp, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General Harold Clavite emphasized the importance of being responsible in utilizing social media in spreading information.

“You own the gadget, you own the time…no one else tells you what to do with it. Let us self-regulate. Use your cellphones responsibly to protect yourselves; your communities,” said Clavite.

As social media had become prominent in recruitment strategies used by terrorist groups, Clavite encouraged the youth to fight back and “have your own social media strategy, individually and collectively.”

378 displaced families currently sheltered in ASEAN tents

Three hundred seventyeight displaced families of Marawi City are currently sheltered in tents located at Barangay Bito Buadi Itowa.

It can be recalled that last July, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance in Disaster Management (AHA Centre), handed over a total of 600 family tents, 600 family kits, more than 3000 personal hygiene kits, 600 kitchen sets and four water filtration units for the internally displaced persons of Marawi City.

The Republic Act No. 9856 was enacted in 2009 to encourage the investing public to invest in property projects and to further develop the capital market.

However, REIT has yet to take off in the country due to uncertainties like whether the transfer of asset should be subject to the 12-percent VAT. Under the term of former Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares, her office issued a memorandum order that the transfer of asset under REIT will be slapped with VAT. Yap stressed that Congress would stick to imposing the law and giving a tax-free transfer of asset and also exempted from VAT as it

recognized that there is no gain or loss on the initial transfer for the income purposes.

House Bill 5085 is now being discussed in two committees at the House of Representatives. Members of the committees are not from the Davao region, thus the need for public support to pressure their congressmen to pass the bill, Torintera pointed out.

The group has earlier discovered that most of the existing contracts between the farmers and the companies are prepared solely by the banana producers. “ The companies sell the fertilizers and other inputs for the land and will buy the products of the farmers as well. The prices of the products however often remain low while the prices of the inputs are solely controlled by the company,” lawyer Irvin Sagarino of the group Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services.

Ampuan, who is also the Halal committee chair of the Tourism Congress of the Philippines, said DTI is the lead agency in Halal Board, created in accordance with Republic Act No. 10817, an Act Instituting the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Program. The Board is chaired by DTI and the National Commission on Muslim Filipino (NCMF) as vice chair.

While the halal standards are still being finalized, Ampuan said the board has extended the role of the certifiers to two more years.

These certifiers included three NCMF-accredited certifiers and the other two which were appointed by the DTI. The five certifiers are the Islamic Dawa Council of the Phils, the Halal Development Institute of the Philippines, Mindanao Halal Authority, Muslim Mindanao Halal Certification Board, and the Halal International Chamber of Commerce.

Ampuan said the countries like Thailand and Malaysia only have one certifier. She voiced concerns that once Philippines adopts only one certifier for the country there might be resistance from the existing certifiers given that these have been in the business for a long time.

Marinatuna, which is also into tuna exporting as well as sales of local fresh fruits, will set up a 1,000-square meter model farm where grouper fingerlings will be bred.

Mr. Ang said they are also looking at producing lobsters.

“If this project becomes successful, this will become a bigger project in the Davao Gulf… The long-term plan is that we will help the fisherfolk along the Davao Gulf,” he said.

Mar inatuna aims to provide fisherfolk with boats and fish cages, and will purchase the produce from them.

Mr. Ang said they are aiming to establish the model farm in time for a possible visit by a high-level Chinese delegation this year. “ This will make the President happy,” said Mr. Ang, a known close friend of President Rodrigo R. Duterte who was mayor of Davao City for several terms.

AIR ASIA TRANSPORT Mr. Ang said he also discussed with AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Anthony Francis Fernandes, who was in the city last July, the possibility of the budget airline flying between China and Davao with marine products as the primary cargo going to China and bringing in Chinese tourists to Davao.

Mr. Fernandes announced then that AirAsia is looking at expanding its footprint using Davao City as a hub for 10 international routes, including the Davao-Kuala Lumpur flights beginning in December.
