Prayer for peace PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday wished the Muslim Filipino community and all Muslims in the world a happy Islamic New Year as he joined them in prayer for worldwide peace.

In his message, Duterte noted that Amun Jadid, or Islamic New Year, which will be celebrated in the Philippines on September 21, is one of the most important events in the culture of Islam.

AVAO City -- After several years of promoting Mindanao products from hand woven cloths to handcrafted products, they finally found niche in the Philippine market.

These products made by different tribes are getting popular and recognized by entrepreneurs for their

intricate and indigenous materials.

popularizes the Mindanao weaves, said Mindanao products are now popular nationwide. Kaayo was among the 70 artisans picked by Arte Fino to showcase its products in the recently-concluded exhibition at the Penthouse 8 in Rockwell, Makati.

Gov’t hybrid seeds boost Normin’s rice production

ORN production in Northern Mindanao has recovered from the ill-effects of El Niño phenomenon during the second quarter of 2017, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in the region reported.

Corn output during the quarter was recorded at 66,163 metric tons (MT), up by 211.79 percent from the 21,220 MT production in the second quarter of 2016.

Clarete, chief economic development specialist of NEDA-X, said the growth was mainly due to sufficient rainfall, more usage of fertilizer, and availability of hybrid and modern open pollinated variety (OPV) seeds.

Bukidnon was the biggest corn producer contributing 44,791 MT or 67 percent of the total regional corn production followed by Lanao del Norte sharing 21 percent or 14,150 MT. The value of white corn production for the

quarter stood at P227.8 million, up by 34 percent, year-on-year. Despite the 14 percent reduction in the average farm gate, the 55 percent increase in volume was more than enough to raise the value of white corn production The value of yellow corn production, on the other hand, grew by 332 percent to P440.1 million due to the 477 percent growth in production volume.

White corn production during the quarter was recorded at 20,745 MT while yellow corn at 45,418 MT. Meanwhile, the volume

of palay produced during the same quarter reached 136,331 MT, higher by 36.8 percent from the 99,644 MT recorded in the same quarter last year.

All the provinces in the region, except for Camiguin, posted increases in production.

Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte were still the top producers contributing 69,546 MT (51%) and 41,893 MT (31%), respectively.

IDC’s Green Projects in Emerging Locations Soften Initial Challenges

SE-listed and design driven company Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC) underscored the significance of the infusion of its green advocacy in its property development projects in emerging locations in the country, softening the challenges posed by being a young player in the industry.

IDC started its first project in the city of Cagayan de Oro, carving out a niche as the first developer and green builder in the region and in Mindanao. In just a short span of time, the company went on to expand in Luzon with the Miramonti towers in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, and in Visayas with projects in the pipeline. The new developments came at the heels of the success of Primavera Residences in CDO, which was able to gather multiple awards from various organizations.

IDC was incorporated to be the frontier in designing passive green projects with the intention of concentrating its developments in emerging and alternative locations outside Metro Manila.

However, it was not easy

for the company to execute this green advocacy.

“Being young in the business in a country of many well-established developers was a great challenge at first. When we decided to build in Cagayan de Oro back in 2009, people thought we were crazy. They thought that it would be impossible for us to make the project a success considering that CDO is a small city. But we wanted to prove to them they were wrong about it, “ said Atty. Jojo Leviste, president of IDC. Despite the onset challenge, IDC’s commitment to its ambition continues to deliver its green projects in growing cities. As a matter fact, it became the company’s biggest advantage making it the first mover in sustainable property development in

these locations.

“We were ahead of the competition. And it is good to see now that more developers and big developments are being put up and invested in Cagayan de Oro. It is a fulfillment for IDC to see that happening in the city, “ explained Architect Romolo Valentino Nati, chairman and CEO of IDC. Talking about the essence of fostering projects in emerging cities, Atty Leviste pointed out, “We think that the Philippines is transforming from unipolar into multipolar, where several centers around the Philippines contribute to the development and growth of the country.”

Can’t Get No Satisfaction think a minute

A nice me al wit h your cl o s e st f r i e nd s ? O r d o you enjoy gambling and alcohol? Maybe you love sports like football, tennis or golf? What’s your greatest pleasure? As one guy puts it: “What turns your eyes red?”

Pleasures make us feel alive and free. But the problem with pleasure is that it only makes us feel good and satisfied for a short time.

Unfortunately, we still end up feeling like the old hit song by the Rolling Stones: “I can’t get no satisfaction.”

After the party’s over we’re back to living our same, ever yday life and responsibilities. It seems even worse after your big high and pleasure. Just ask the guy with the terrible

hangover. Ask his wife or kids whom he beat up while he was drunk. Ask the wife and children who are suffering terrible heartbreak and pain from the adulterous affair their father had with another woman.

Yet the amazing thing is we keep doing these same wrong things over and over again. These same things that keep hurting ourselves and the ones we love. We keep believing the lie and illusion that these extreme feelings of physical pleasure are what we want and need to feel satisfied. So even though we already know from our own experience that the pleasure doesn’t last and satisfy, we keep going back for more. We’re almost like the dog that keeps chasing its tail.

But there’s a reason why we can’t be satisfied just from physical pleasures.

It’s simply not possible! We are not made or designed that way. We humans are not able to be permanently satisf ied with only fun experiences and physical pleasures. You and I were made for much more than “just to have a little fun before we die!” God made us spiritual beings like Him, satisfaction/PAGE 11

With near a million inhabitants, Cagayan de Oro is getting used to endless traffic with the unstoppable surge of all kinds of motor vehicles getting down after the other on narrow, substandard city streets.

The city is well on its way to becoming a metropolis, no doubt about that, but its horrendous traffic, garbage that clogged drainage systems, and shanties that stood in waterways and even along narrow streets, all contribute in continuously pushing the city’s image as another Metro Manila in the making.

Massive urbanization has resulted to the construction of houses along the creeks, roads and even under bridges contributing considerably to the flooding problem of the city.

Projection says that

Cagayan de Oro will become the fourth metropolitan center based on its population g rowt h and f unc t iona l rol e as maj or g ate w ay and transshipment hub in Northern Mindanao.

In addition, the city will continue to serve as key education center in Northern Mindanao.

As envisioned, Metro Cagayan de Oro will consist of Cagayan de Oro City; Jasaan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Claveria, Opol, El Salvador, Alubijid, Laguindingan and Gitagum in Misamis Oriental; Libona, Manolo Fortich, Talakag, Baungon, Malitbog and Sumilao in Bukidnon.

Population in these areas combined has reached to 1.376 million.

A European Dilemma? have my say

klaus doring Somehow, I really felt touched while listening. In his State of the Union speech, European C om m i s s i on Pre s i d e nt Juncker has praised the bloc for “bouncing back” after 10 years of crises. He has outlined bold proposals for the Eurozone, trade and migration. Is it too late?

Well, the Commission Chief has ruled out Turkish EU membership “in the foreseeable future.” No wonder.

Then, Juncker has called on European states to help improve the “scandalous” conditions in Libyan migrant centers to prevent people fleeing Africa to Italy by way of the Mediterranean.

Longtime overdue!

Next, there were warm words for Balkan candidate countries. Sure.

Also, the future EU tax policy should be approved by a majority of member states, rather than the existing unanimity requirement, Juncker said. Is there really a chance for this. I doubt!

Of course, many Europeans call Juncker’s speech as ‘Wind back in Europe’s sails’. Of course, in my opinion, last year, Eu rop e an C om m i ss i on President Jean Claude Juncker had little to cheer about in his flagship address before the European Parliament.

If anything, it was a call to

stop the collapse of the EU. Now, a year on from Brexit and with European economies on the upswing, Wednesday’s State of the Union speech struck a far more optimistic note, as Juncker praised the bloc’s achievements over the last 12 months and laid out his vision for its future.

“After 10 years of crises, economies are on the rise and the European Union is bouncing back” he said.

“The wind is back in Europe’s sails, it now has a window of opportunity.” Oh yes - so very true!

Indeed, let’s throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the harbor. Catch the trade winds in our sails. It’s indeed high time for protecting European businesses. On strengthening Europe’s trade program, Juncker said that, “Europe has always been an attractive partner to trade

with, and now countries from all over the world are knocking on our door.”

Juncker cited the bloc’s recent trade agreements with Canada and Japan, and called on a speedy conclusion to ongoing talks with Mexico and the South American trading bloc, Mercosur.

Juncker also said talks should also begin with Australia and New Zealand.

Regulatory reforms aimed at protecting European businesses from undesired f o r e i g n t a k e ov e r s a n d investment were also among the proposals made by the former Luxembourg prime minister. Europe cautious as China buys up foreign companies.

-ooo A PLEA FOR A BETTER CIRCULAR ON WORK

SUSPENSION: Oh well, I will now make a plea to Malacanang and also to President Duterte: at some other time that they will be issuing any order in connection with suspension of work, they must hasten to clarify right away the agencies that are to be covered by the work stoppage.

This plea is brought about by the memorandum order decreeing that there will be no work on September 21, 2017, allegedly because it will be devoted as a day of protest. In the first volley of statements from the Palace on the matter, it was clear enough that all offices of government in the whole county would be without wok on that day, to enable government men to join the protests.

That kind of an order was in fact confirmed by Memorandum Circular No. 26, September 19, 2017, which Acting Executive Secretary

Menardo I. Guevarra issued.

The problem, however, was that, just a day after, or on September 20, 2017, Malacanang suddenly turned around and decreed that work suspension would apply only to those in the executive department. The judiciary and the legislature would still have work. Oh well…

-ooo HURRICANES IN T H E WO R L D, M O R E ARE TO COME: If we in the Philippines are starting to believe that we will not undergo the fierce rains, floods, and strong winds from hurricanes like Hurricane Maria which has been lashing at the Caribbean Islands and other US territories located almost at the tip of its southern states at the Atlantic Ocean, we are gravely mistaken. .

The advent of deadly and destructive storms and typhoons is an international concern these days. Almost

everywhere in the world now, even those which were usually spared from weather aberrations like these are starting to experience pouring rains, drowning floods, and stormy winds.

And, yes, it is true that these calamities are due largely to global warming and climate change but for our purposes, it would be more beneficial to recall that the occurrence of all of these were predicted by Jesus, our God and Savior. We should, further, endeavor to recall that Jesus has provided a “way out”, in a manner of speaking, from these rains, floods, and winds.

Phoenix on track to exceed 2016 profit

HOENIX Petroleum Philippines, Inc. expects to exceed last year’s sales and income as 2017 ushered in new revenue sources for the company that has steadily expanded its market share to become one of the country’s top five sellers of oil products.

“Our objective is to grow top line and bottom [line], not just bottom,” said Henry Albert R. Fadullon, Phoenix Petroleum chief operating officer, in a briefing on Wednesday in Taguig City.

“It will be better than last year. I am not talking about percentages,” he said. “I am talking about absolute numbers.”

In absolute numbers, Phoenix Petroleum in 2016 posted a net income of P1.09 billion, higher by 21% compared with the earlier year’s bottom line as fuel sales increased by double digits after what it called a “solid” growth in volume.

Core earnings from the fuel business more than doubled to P937 million from P416 million because of better margins and sales mix. Fuel sales volume last year grew by 25% and hit the 1.5-billion liter milestone, driven by solid growth in retail and commercial volume.

As of the first half, Mr. Fadullon said Phoenix Petroleum completed 518 retail service stations, with plans to study new locations for the rest of the year.

FORAY INTO LPG The company was also cleared by competition regulators on its acquisition of Petronas Energy Philippines, Inc. (PEPI), marking its foray into the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market.

Petronas Energy is expected to be a strong growth and value driver for Phoenix Petroleum as it continues to expand its presence in the petroleum industry.

Mr. Fadullon said Petronas Energy had been consolidated into the company beginning August and is expected to

contribute to earnings by end-2017.

Petronas Energy is engaged in the LPG business largely in the Visayas and Mindanao.

It has allowed Phoenix Petroleum to become a more diversified petroleum company with an enhanced product mix and a more robust platform for growth.

In June, the company opened a new terminal in Consolacion, Cebu, its ninth facility in the country and its largest in the Visayas. The terminal has a capacity of 15 million liters and can store diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, special fuel oil and industrial fuel oil.

It was built to better serve the fuel and lubricant needs of Phoenix’s retail network and commercial customers in shipping,

airlines, construction, mass transportation and other industries in the Visayas.

With the new facility, Mr. Fadullon said the company now has three such terminals each in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

“We would like to grow as much as we can,” he said.

The company has earmarked P10 billion for its capital expenditures starting this year and into the next three years. Of that amount, P2 billion will be spent in 2017.

The budget carrier said in a statement that its wholly owned subsidiary, Cebgo, will have four times weekly flights (Tuesdays, Thursday, Saturdays, and Sundays) between Davao and Tagbilaran.

“As part of our efforts to improve the overall customer experience for everyJuan, we have been taking to heart the suggestions and feedback from our guests. We’ve looked at the feasibility of the DavaoTagbilaran route

coverage in Visayas and Mindanao, launching commercial operations of new routes. Cebgo began flying three times weekly between Cebu and Masbate; Zamboanga and Cotabato; and Davao and Dumaguete.

Cebgo also started flying four times a week between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga; and Davao and Tacloban.

Cebu Pacific in July also began operating evening flights to and from the DumagueteSibulan Airport. It now also operates three additional roundtrip flights weekly between Manila and Dumaguete.

PHILIPPINES AirAsia, Inc. is set to mount direct flights from Manila to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, in November.

In a statement, AirAsia said there will be three weekly flights between Manila and Ho Chi Minh departing on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Billboard PH hosts biggest gathering of economic officials from ASEAN and its trade partner countries

ollowing the successful hosting of the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Retreat in March, the Philippines (PH), as current Chair of ASEAN 2017, stands ready to host once again a series of high-level meetings among economic ministers of the 10 Member States of ASEAN and the region’s trade partners.

As the biggest formal gathering of high-level economic officials this year, the 49th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting and Related Meetings will run from 6 to 11 September 2017. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is set to lead the occasion with Secretary Ramon M. Lopez as the AEM Chair and DTI Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo as AEM PH Lead.

Since the adoption of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2025 last year and the Consolidated Strategic Action Plan (CSAP) in February 2017 in Manila, community building efforts have intensified under the Philippines’ Chairmanship of ASEAN. Under this year’s Chairmanship, PH’s priority deliverables include strategic measures pushing for an ASEANwide Self-certification Scheme, introducing a more robust method for AEC compliance monitoring through the ASEAN Seamless Trade Facilitation Indicators (ASTFI) and Review Mechanism for AEC, fostering a more facilitative and transparent trade in services regime sector through the ASEAN Trade in Services Agreement (ATISA) negotiations, and strengthening investments through the Focused and Strategic (FAST) Action Agenda on Investment, and enhancing intra-regional connectivity and bolstering socio-economic growth in the regions through the launch of the ASEAN Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) Shipping Network.

TDF posts mixed rates movement

ANKS submitted lower tenders for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) Term Deposit Facility (TDF) Wednesday resulting in mixed movements of the facility’s weighted average accepted yields.

Data released by the central bank Wednesday showed that bids for the seven-day facility reached P36.890 billion, lower than the P40,000 offering and the P37.829 billion submitted in last week’s auction. The auction committee accepted all the bids.

yield is wider this week at 3.2300 to 3.4000 from last week’s 3.2350 to 3.4000 percent.

Weighted average accepted yield improved to 3.3765 percent from 3.3484 percent during the auction last September 12.

However, bid coverage ratio decreased to 0.9223 from last week’s 0.9457.

Bids for the 28-day facility also went down after it amounted to P67.155 billion from last week’s P101.442 billion.

Like the shorter tenor, the auction committee also accepted all the bids for

this TDF. Range of accepted yield remained between 3.4500 and 3.5000 percent but weighted average accepted yield improved to 3.4960 percent from last week’s 3.4950 percent.

Bid coverage ratio also went down after finishing at 0.6105 from 0.9222 last week.

BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo attributed the lower bids to work suspension in government agencies and public schools on September 21.

“Suspension of work appears to be the reason

for the banks to keep funds with them. Of course they continue to lend out, invest, etc.” he said.

Malacañang has suspended work in government agencies and classes in all public schools nationwide on September 21, which was declared National Day of Protest.

Meanwhile, the BSP will continue to offer the seven-day TDF for P40 billion and the 28-day TDF for P110 billion on the auction scheduled on September 27, 2017.

Manulife execs bullish on PH economy MANULIFE Asset Management and Trust Corporation is banking on the rising number of Filipino middle class and the large number of millennials to boost its newly-formed business.

In a briefing Wednesday, Manulife Philippines president and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Charland said the rising number of millennials need a lot of help in terms of how they will invest their funds.

He, however, clarified that their Unit Investment Trust Funds (UITF) products -- namely Manulife Stable Income Fund, Manulife Income Builder Fund, and Manulife Equity Wealth Fund, also cater to those who have already invested in various assets but want to diversify their portfolio. Minimum investment is P5,000.

He explained that some individuals want to invest in certain types of financial products that do not have personal insurance-related offering.

“We needed to offer something that is pure investment as opposed to those that have insurancelinks,” he said.

He declined to give assets under management (AUM) value target but said officials of the asset management firm, which received from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) its certificate of authority to operate trust and

other fiduciary business only last June, said their ambition is “to be a significant player in this country.”

“I think we have the position to put a dent on the industry,” he said.

He said 3,000 of their 10,000 financial advisors have received their training and are ready to cater to prospective clients.

He said five to six additional products are in the pipeline but declined to give a timeline when these will be launched.

Manulife Asset Managment and Trust Corporation is the global asset management arm of Manulife and its officials are positive for a strong growth for its business in the Philippines given the improving economies of countries belonging to the Association of Southeast

Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Charland said the political noise in the country is not unique in the Philippines, thus, the focus on the demographics, which, he said, is “absolutely tremendous.”

“A lot of people are working and consuming.

OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) and BPOs (Business Process Outsourcing) continue to remit in record amounts so I’m quite bullish on the economy,” he said.

Michael Dommermuth, head of Manulife’s Wealth and Asset Management in Asia, during the same briefing, said the company considers ASEAN as a “non-stoppable asset force” and is forecast to eclipse the European Union and Japan by 2050 through the help of

Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

“We’re throwing the ball where we see the receiver will be,” he said.

Dommermuth explained that officials of Manulife’s asset management arm are of the belief that the Philippines will play a big role in the company’s core strength in the coming years, with the help of their large number of financial advisors.

“We see the Philippines as among those with the fastest asset growth in the region,” he said.

He said the company’s asset management arm has long been in the ASEAN but started its operations in the Philippines just this year because “regulations weren’t accommodating” in the past. (PNA)

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Friday said Qatari Riyal (QAR) continues to be included in the currencies allowed to be exchanged with the Philippine peso.

In a statement, the central bank said it made the clarification following some reports that some money changers (MCs) and foreign exchange (FX) dealers do not accept

the said foreign currency.

It explained that some of these entities claim that the BSP has issued a policy barring the exchange of QAR to Philippine peso.

“Acceptance of the QAR (for any other foreign currency) has always been a business decision of banks, MCs and FX dealers,” it added.

he 2nd edition of the Aperitivo Italiano business networking event in Cagayan de Oro was held 08 September during the 2017 Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon) to complement the activities of the European Philippine Business Network (EPBN) which also set up a European Pavilion for the Minbizcon Exhibit.

Organized and led by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines this networking event was first launched in Cagayan de Oro in 2015 during the OroBest Expo in partnership with Oro Chamber and had already a great success during its first edition.

Building on the experience gathered in previous years with similar Aperitivo events in Makati where VIPs, foreign and Filipino entrepreneurs, members of various chambers of commerce, government agencies and diplomatic staff gather for memorable evenings with a sumptuous buffet of unlimited Italian food enjoyed with Italian wines.

In modern days most of us are aware of the Italian habit of taking an Aperitivo (an alcoholic beverage and appetizers served before

In a call for increased border security on Europe’s borders, the European Commission president emphasized the need to unburden countries, such as Greece and Italy, where many migrants have landed. “Italy saves Europe’s honor,” said Juncker, praising the Mediterranean nation for its perseverance and generosity in its handling of the crisis. I strongly agree!

Juncker’s proposal could be music to the ears of French President Emmanuel Macron, who has argued that the Euro needs its own, stronger institutions to prevent another debt crisis.

However, the proposal will likely be met with tepid reactions in Germany/Berlin, which has largely dismissed reform calls for the common currency.

Juncker also endorsed an EU-wide adoption of the Euro currency. Denmark and Sweden, who in referendums both rejected the Euro, would be exempt. No doubts, when German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble welcomed Juncker’s idea for pan-EU use of the Euro, but said the same conditions must be met by all member states.

Montemayor also said Kaayo got good reviews when it joined the Asean Trade Showcase at the PICC last July. It was also hand-picked to represent the Philippines of the women entrepreneurs from 10 other countries to showcase the best products.

Montemayor is one of the three women awardees of t he ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs 2017. The other two were Joji Ilagan Bian of the Joii Ilagan Career Center Foundation Inc. for the academe and Charita Peuntespina of the Puenstespina Orchid and Tropical Plants, Inc. for agriculture.

“The recognition speaks of strong affirmation that Davao is in the radar scheme of recognition and sharing the pie of women entrepreneur in the Asian under the women entrepreneur sector.

She said that being an awardee carries a very strong statement “because we are recognized, accepted, and showcased.”

Montemayor said Kaayo, which means kindness and goodness, carries an advocacy of bringing Mindanao to everyone by wearing the Mindanao product. She said it becomes an opening door to introduce to the market through apparel and other related products.

Kaayo works closely with the T’boli tribe of Lake Sebu, consisting of five peoples’ organizations with different expertise from weaving tinalak, beading to embroidery.

She said Kaayo tapped these groups according to their strengths and work with them on designs and guide them on product development with emphasis on respecting their patterns.

“We m o d e r n i z e t h e m ate r i a l an d tu r n t h e products that will give them a livelihood,” she said.

The Bagobo Tagabawa tribes said Montemayor are also into making scarves with the pattern of the chieftain headdress or the “tangkulo” after given the permission to use the design.

Initially, the weavers can only make 12 scarves for a month but now they can complete 120 pieces for one month as the tangkulo has been sought after by buyers during the exhibit.

The Tangkulo drew interests from patrons, Montemayor said.

In order to increase their production, she said t h e B a g o b o Ta g a c a o l o expanded their work force by training other members of

the community. By doing so, it also increases beneficiaries.

Montemayor said she is also working with the Mandayas of Davao Oriental and the Manobos of Caraga.
