DOE orders deferment of Agus 6 plant rehab T

DIPOLOG City -- In an effort to raise awareness on the oil industry, its benefits to the local economy as well as its legal implications, the Department of Energy (DOE) in collaboration with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) is conducting a multi-sectoral advocacy campaign on the downstream oil industry for local government units (LGUs) of Zamboanga del Norte and local oil industry players at the Ariana Hotel here today, Sept. 16.

The discussions center on the laws, rules and regulations governing sale of liquefied petroleum products (LPPs) and the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with municipal mayors, treasurers, licensing officers, business licensing issuing officers, and information officers as participants.

Representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are also attending the activity.

HE proposed fast-tracking rehabilitation of generating unit 4 of the Agus 6 hydropower plant will instead face delays because of the decision of the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) to award the contract to a company which is not the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the facility.

Mindanao bids for Guinness in TreeVolution

MINDANAO targets to beat India in the Guinness book of record by planting 4.6 million seedlings in just one hour, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am on September 26, 2014.

India has set a record of 1,945,535 trees across 408 locations with 340,200 participants in 2011.

TreeVolution: Greening Mindanao Challenge will pitch some 244,444 participants to plant at least in 9,200 hectares inside the National Greening Program (NGP) areas and other areas identified by the local government units and private sector partners.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Mindanao Development Authority (MinDa) called on volunteer planters, stewards, and video/photographers to register now at their nearest provincial/city environment and natural resources office (P/CENRO).

Guinness is requiring at least 25 planters per hectare with at least 20 seedlings each or a minimum of 500 hundred seedlings per hectare.

All six regions will join the bid with region 11, 13, 12, 9, 10 and ARMM to cover least 4,153, 1,469, 1,001, 836, 708, and 59 hectares, respectively.

“Other than beating India, we hope to increase our forest cover to 30 percent, because at present Mindanao’s cover pegs only between 6 to 10 percent,” Lordilie Enjambre development management officer of MinDa said.

MinDa emphasized that this is not just about beating the challenge, but

rather a campaign for the Mindanaoans to unite in the protection, rehabilitation and conservation of its natural resources.

“We enjoin everyone to be part of the campaign and together let’s plant trees on September 26, 2014 even right on your backyards,” she added.

Dads present provisions of proposed Revenue Code A PERSON who paid the professional tax shall be entitled to practice his profession in any part of the Philippines without being subjected to any other national or local tax or fee for the practice of such profession and shall not be levied business tax for maintaining an office or clinic that is not offering services like laboratory equipment or not engaging in trading or selling of drugs, equipment, books and other goods and materials related to their profession.

This provision is contained in Section 47 (a) of Article J on Professional Tax in the proposed Revenue Code of 2015, which was presented by the Cagayan de Oro City Council committees on finance and ways and means and on trade, commerce and cooperatives chaired by councilors President Elipe and Edna Dahino, during the public hearing Tuesday.

It may be recalled that the City Council headed by vice mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas

approved on first reading the Cagayan de Oro Revenue Code of 2015.

During the first day of the public hearing, councilor Elipe said the intention of this added provision is that those who are merely practicing their profession will not be subject to business tax. An example is if a doctor has a clinic and is not selling medicines, he will not have to pay business taxes, said Elipe.

There will be no increase in the annual professional tax of P300 imposed upon persons engaged in the practice of his profession requiring government examination in the proposed Revenue Code of 2015.

Under Section 47, the city treasurer before accepting payment of the tax, shall require the presentation of the valid Professional Licenses issued by the Professional Regulations Commission. It also provides

that any individual or corporation employing a person subject to the professional tax shall require payment by that person of the tax on his profession before employment and annually thereafter.

Councilors Elipe and Dahino are calling on the business sector, subdivision developers and all concerned sectors to submit their respective position papers on Real Property Tax, Tax on Idle Lands, Tax on Transfer of Real Property Ownership, Tax on Printing and Publication, Franchise Tax, Tax on Sand, Gravel and Other Quarry Resources and Professional Tax, all of which were discussed during Tuesday’s public hearing.

The joint committee will continue the series of public hearings on other provisions of the proposed Revenue Code today, and on September 16, 18, 23 and 30.

The Devil As Today’s Entertainer? Wow!

-ooo T H E R I SE OF T H E D E V I L A S T O D AY ’ S ENTERTAINER? WOW! More and more, the Bible is proving to be the accurate book of God, especially in its predictions of things that are to happen yet, in the Philippines and everywhere else in the whole world. One such prediction is found in its 1 Timothy 4:1, which says there will come a point in the history of mankind where deceiving spirits and demons will sway and control the minds of many.

This is happening now, right before our very eyes, in many areas, particularly the movies and the arts. One recent and glaring example of this is an advertisement in a major Manila newspaper which features a picture glorifying the devil and asking Filipinos to go to on a tour in an economically well-off Asian city to watch or participate in a show that carries the name of the devil itself.

The Right Motivation W hink a minute…A school teacher was complaining about a little boy in her class who was not showing any interest in learning. She said: “That boy David just will not do his school work. He’s not even motivated enough to try!” But a famous education professor says there is no such thing as a person who is not motivated. So what that teacher should have said is: “David just is not motivated to learn with me.” Because that same boy, David, will jump out of bed early in the morning if he’s going fishing or to play with his friends.

Everyone can be motivated.

We just need to be motivated for the right things. Just watch people leaving work on Friday, rushing off for a weekend of fun. They don’t look unmotivated or lazy then! Maybe you had a schoolteacher who really made a certain subject interesting even exciting to you. They made you want to learn more, and they explained things so you could really understand.

Then you ended up doing much better in that teacher’s class than you did in the other ones.

But then it’s not possible for our children’s teachers to know our own kids as well as we do. That’s why we their parents are their most important teachers. It

The reign of terror has begun…” Of course, the advertiser will say that the show is meant only to entertain, and not really to glorify evil. But, why strive to entertain at all, using the devil or the demon? Have we really run out of materials glorifying God? -ooo THE EVIL IN ALL OF US HAS BEEN PREDICTED TO RISE: Knowingly or unknowingly, many of us have fallen prey to the wiles of the devil which seek to take us away from our faith in God, thereby enabling us to become evil and sinful.

Again, this is a situation predicted by the Bible itself, in its 2 Timothy 3:1-5, which says people will become---as they have become, now--godless, selfish, without love and respect to parents, without self-control, brutal, among others.

-ooo LIFEST YLE CHECK? USELESS? The move for a lifestyle check of all government officials, allegedly being conducted by different agencies of government and by the Ombudsman at this point as announced by Presidential

Spokesman Edwin Lacierda, is actually meaningless as it is useless. Fact is, for any lifestyle check to succeed, it must not focus only on the wealth or material prosperity of those in government.

Indeed, we must look at why many in government are fabulously rich and financially comfortable, when, quite undeniably, they do not have any businesses, no means to earn millions, no honest-to-goodness capacity to become economically successful. How were they able to acquire so much m on e y w h e n t h e on l y business they have is with the government, because of their positions therein?

There could be no other conclusion from this but that these rich government officials stole from the government. They stole because they knew they could not be punished for their misdeeds and their unmitigated plunder of public funds. They knew they could not be punished at all because everyone else in government is like them--thieves and robbers and plunderers.

What Filipinos who are already nauseated by all of these ought to do is turn to God for relief. But how do we do this?

The Bible has an answer, in its Deuteronomy 28. Verses 1 to 14 of this chapter talk about God’s blessings. Verses 15 to 68 talk about God’s curses. One of these curses is plundering officials (see Deuteronomy 28:15, 29), and it is brought about by the people’s collective turning away from God. is mainly our responsibility to motivate our children so they want to learn and do their best. And to do that, we must let our kids know that we believe in them. We watch them closely so we can help them know what they’re naturally talented and good at doing. Then we need to encourage them in that area so they can fully develop their own special abilities, whether it’s academics and school, sports, cooking, music, business, relating to people, or something else.

You and I can motivate our children by always loving and accepting them without conditions, no matter what they do. Even when we don’t approve of everything they do, we must still accept them so they know they are always loved. And when our kids do something well, we should hurst/PAGE 7

e need to understand t h at a s t h e v e r y beginning of our life with God, our life in the Spirit which is a supernatural life more than just a natural life, our Christian faith has to be taken care of, nourished and developed to full maturity.

We need to be more aware of this duty and develop the appropriate attitude and skill to carry out this responsibility effectively. We have to go beyond mere good intentions or being merely theoretical in order to be truly practical and vitally engaged with this obligation.

Faith is a tremendous gift from God who starts to share with us what he has, what he knows about himself and about ourselves.

It gives us the global picture of reality, covering both the temporal and the eternal, the material and the spiritual, the natural and supernatural dimensions of our life.

It is what gives permanent value to our passing concerns, the ultimate, constant and unifying standard to all the variables of our life. The perishable things of life can attain an imperishable quality when infused with faith. What is merely earthly and mundane can have a sanctifying effect when done with faith.

By its very dynamics, it

prepares us for a life of charity which is how our life ought to be. It is also nourished and is the effect of charity, indicating to us that faith is organically united to charity, the very essence of God in whose image and likeness we are.

Besides, given the character of journeying of our earthly life, faith is also what nourishes our hope, that principle that enables us to move on before all kinds of possible situations and predicaments we can encounter in our life. It gives us the reason, the basis, and the vital impulses of our hope.

Faith contains the medicine and the remedy to all our spiritual inadequacies and illnesses. It is what is required for miracles to happen, as attested many times in the Gospel.

As a gift f rom G o d who spares nothing to give himself to us completely, faith is a seed planted in our soul especially during the sacrament of baptism.

Parts of it or the whole of it may come to us in some other mysterious ways known only to God. That seed obviously need to be watered and cultivated diligently by us both individually and collectively, both personally and ecclesially. We have to pause and reflect on what

practical consequences this need of our faith can have.

There is certainly a need to know the content of our faith.

We have to study and meditate on the gospel, the catechism and other sources. We have to be attentive to the teachings of the Church magisterium who is empowered and guaranteed

by Christ to teach the faith with authority and with infallibility.

God’s living word as expressed in the psalms, for example, gives us vivid and beautiful glimpses of what could be in the mind and heart of God before all kinds of situation.

There we can see God’s wisdom, power, justice and mercy, his prudence and patience, his tenderness and fortitude. We need to be familiar with the attitude and behavior of God as illustrated there.

To capture all this, we need to be humble and docile. The things of God cannot enter into our mind and heart, much less, get assimilated into our life if pride and vanity rule our life.

We should be eager to ask for more faith, and to make many acts of faith. This is a fundamental attitude to have.

Let’s follow the example of the apostles who said: “Lord, increase our faith.” (Lk 17,5) Also the father of a possessed boy who said: “I do believe,

Lord. Help my unbelief.” (Mk 9,24) Let’s also remember that to grow in faith we have to be willing to exert a lot of effort and to make sacrifices.

We have to understand that with faith we are dealing with spiritual and supernatural realities that do not come easy when we simply rely on our senses and feelings.

Discipline and self-denial are required.

Especially these days when many people, not only the young but also the older ones, are hooked to all types of distractions and subtle forms of addiction-work, play and fun, games-we need to exert heroic effort to spend time in prayer, study and meditation.

Of course, faith can take root deeply in our life if we don’t just study it, but also act on it. Our faith should be converted into action, into life itself !

MANILA, PHILIPPINES– A multi-sectoral group of IT champions from industry,

the public sector, technical vocation institutions, and the academe announced

today the establishment of literacy and digital citizenship DigiBayanihan, a movement in helping achieve national that aims to promote digital economic development.

The announcement, aptly made at the 12th Youth for IT Congress whose theme this year is “Harnessing the Power of Me,” challenges the Filipino youth and the tech savvy to actively participate in educating Filipinos on technology use.

Under the DigiBayanihan movement, partner organizations such as Intel Philippines, Children International-Philippines, the Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (ICTO-DOST), the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), the Ph i l ippi ne C om mu n it y e-Center Network (PhilCeCNet), the Philippine Society of IT Educators (PSITE), and the Technical Vocational Schools and Associations of the Philippines (TEVSAPHIL) come together and consolidate ongoing initiatives on digital literacy and more importantly drum up support for more initiatives. By putting a spotlight on the impact of these initiatives, the movement hopes to create a sense of urgency for digital literacy and push its prioritization in the Philippines’ human and economic development agenda.

DigiBayanihan partners are working together to reach more Filipinos who want to learn basic digital skills by involving individuals or groups as volunteer mentors, and leveraging on Intel Easy Steps, Intel’s

digital literacy program that has a specially-developed curriculum comprised of fourteen modules, each containing approximately 2 hours of instruction.

“Intel’s contribution in the movement is leading the DigiBayanihan Secretariat,” said Yvonne Flores, Corporate A f f ai rs Man age r, Intel Philippines. “DigiBayanihan will also provide a traditional and dig it a l avenue for Filipinos to volunteer and teach others to use technology in a meaningful way.We need to create a critical mass of digital literacy and citizenship champions at all levels of society who will motivate and inspire people to learn and take action.”

If you observe good nutrition, the effect will be in as much as you prolong your life and have a greater chances for a livelier and healthier existence.

With the theme “ Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan”. The Don Gregorio Pelaez National High School of Maanas , Medina Misamis Oriental conducted different activities to commend with the countrywide celebration.

a TLE teachers spearheaded the activities and open the event with a short talk during the Monday convocation on the importance of proper nutrition and its role during calamity and how to respond in the event when calamity struck.

Mrs. Andrea T. Vosotros , a school nurse graces the occasion and shared informative message during the culmination activity.

was conducted last July 25, 2014. The celebration were highlighted with cooking contest and Nutri-food display .An Essay Writing , Poster and Slogan making contest were also conducted to make the celebration more meaningful. Winners of the different contest were given medals and trophies.

Proceso S .Ada in lieu of Hon. Mayor Ken Nino T. Uyguangco who is in the Provincial Capitol for another function.

On the afternoon, a Fire Drill was conducted lead by Fire Marshall SFO3 Jose Pajaron Jr. Officer in Charge of Medina Fire Protection .

A lecture culminates the event and a drill was conducted .The drill prepares the students when calamities and fire struck. The students

were very happy learning the different safety measures and actively participated the event.

Fashion designers from all over Mindanao came to showcase their creations and artistry as their gowns paraded on the runway.

Cities as far as Davao and Ozamis City came to pay tribute to the summit which made the whole event successful and well participated.

An old age tradition and its first time experiences

unil Weaving, an age-old tradition of the women of Poona Piagapo, Lanao del Norte experienced recognition for the first time during the Kahimunan Trade Fair Food and Lifestyle Show on August 23 to 30 in Cagayan de Oro City.

During its first time participation to a regional trade fair, it was recognized as one of the nominees for the Best Product Design.

THE CULTURE Bunil Weaving is an age-old tradition of the women of Poona Piagapo. It is not only a matter of exertion of labor into the task, but it is in weaving each strand that they are able to entwine and uphold their dreams of a better life for their children and their family as a whole. It is in putting each strand together that forms the totality of the product and it is in the product that the women of Poona Piagapo are able to promote boldly their identity and their rich Maranao culture.

Mothers and daughters alike learn the craft not only as a necessary source of revenue to support their daily needs but also as a vivid expression of their love of one’s culture. It is in the play of bright colors that one is able to mesh their persona with the identity of the group. And it is in the association of oneself with the culture that one is able to define one’s self!

THE PRODUCT Bunil are soft, fine, yarn-like materials which come in varied bright colors. The design and play of colors are results of the artistic conception of the minds of the Maranao weavers. Products come in different forms and functionality such as: Langkit, strands of woven bunil crafted with designs which may be perfectly utilized as linings and accents for other functional fashion items as bags, Filipino wears, necklaces and other like items; Bunil Blanket, well described as fertility blankets which maybe especially attributed to its fine weaving and warm material.

Newly-wed couples or couples who would want to welcome an addition to the members of the family could best this for their intimate moments. This maybe best used if it is already prayed for blessings by an Imam; Lei, Carefully and artistically handcrafted product, these may function as lei for VIPs who visit the place noting that it is a precious representation of the place which exudes the culture; Table runners and place mats, bright colors would make the table presentation more desirable and served food more enticing.

The table runners and place mats made out of bunil may best as a regular fare on the table; and Bunil bags which come in different size and style would definitely easily blend in with the kind of fashion statement the bearer may want to exude.

BREAKING THROUGH THE MARKET The invitation to the Regional Kahimunan Trade Fair, which was conducted last 23-30 August 2014 was the first, yet it was the start of the group’s move to cross the borders in promoting the hand-woven Bunil. Even at the first instance of seeing the invitation, everyone was ecstatic-it was actually a total mix of emotion; heart pounding because it was the first time for the group, yet it was overwhelming because it was an answered prayer that the craft of the locals of Poona Piagapo be recognized. A product noteworthy to be renowned as Poona’s Finest!

To and fro the municipal hall, the association leaders gather to prepare for the big day. With numerous ideas in mind, each suggested what to do and what to prepare. The excitement sank in deep that everyone would want a piece of their mind written on the application form, and everyone would want to be present during the big day. Disabled by the financial constraints, everyone went in prayers and high hopes to the four representative of the association to the Kahimunan 2014 Regional Trade Fair.

The association made their initial step through participation to an SME Roving Academy conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Lanao del Norte Office at Zoe’s Café, Iligan City last July 9, 2014. Things to be learned about the trade fair was imparted during the training and the participants skills were beefed up. The products marketability was even more testified because even during the training, other participants were buying the product. Knowledge

was even more supported by the provincial and regional trade fair orientation conducted on August 22, 2014.

KAHIMUNAN TRADE FAIR 2014 Ingress started on August 22, 2014. The four representatives of Poona Piagapo did not mind and painstakingly endured the more than 50 kilometres travel going to Cagayan de Oro City.

To prepare for the big day, the participants had a feel of the environment the night before the start of the trade fair proper at the hallways of SM Cagayan de Oro City.

The clocked ticked 6:00 a.m. of the 23rd of August 2014, and all the decorations were up. All the inventory were out and were arranged well, ready for sale! Each of the exhibitors beautified and lighted their spaces to maximize the product presentation and made sure that the judges would take a look at their products and earn their attention.

Of the hundreds of products presented, Handwoven bunil caught not only the attention of the buyers but that of the judges as well. Poona’s Finest hand-woven bunil made P24,250.00 sales for only seven days of exhibit! Since time immemorial, this was an event worth reminiscing, for this was their first time to make this much of sales in just a short span of time.

More than anything else, the Poona’s Finest hand-woven bunil is worthy for such brand. For, during its first time participation to a regional trade fair, it was recognized as one of the nominees for the Best Product Design for the Kahimunan Trade Fair 2014!

The day was concluded with the HIGALAAY runway show headed by the debonair Mr. Sean Moreno that marked the start of the Fiesta festivities which in turn promoted and relived Cagayan de Oro as the City of Golden friendship.

Succeeding days of the summit were solo shows of select designers, Brand and sponsorship shows and Fashion workshops. And to culminate the event were the holiday collection of all the participating Cagayan de Oro designers, where all the glitz and glamour, fun and pageantry, elegance and grace molded into one big show.

The long months’ preparation was truly rewarded by its huge success and unending commendations of people from all over Mindanao and even from the imperial Manila and beyond. Truly, Cagayan de Oro made an indelible impression as the fashion capital of Mindanao. And for that, people have something to look forward to in the fashion industry for next year’s Mindanao fashion Summit!
