Improved mining DAVAO City -- Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Gina Lopez revealed that the agency is now taking a closer look on the mining industry, with 30 firms being issued show-cause order. She said the DENR is currently doing a thorough evaluation on every mining firm. “We are talking to everyone. Everybody has to improved,” Lopez said. The DENR Secretary stressed that if a mining firm operates it must have social and economic positive impact. Lopez said the DENR will use the total economic valuation, wherein the positive and the negative effects of the mining operation will be monetized and will be evaluated.

Peace talks THE 2nd round of formal talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) was held at the Holmen Fjordhotell on October 6 to 9. This round follows the historic August talks which marked the resumption of negotiations between the two parties after five years of stalemate. Secretary Jesus Dureza, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, led the GRP delegation, with the panel composed of Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, GRP Panel Chairperson, and panel members Mr. Hernani A. Braganza, Atty. Rene V. Sarmiento, Atty. Angela L. Trinidad, and Atty. Antonio B. Arellano. Panel advisers and consultants, chairs and members of the GRP monitoring committee, reciprocal working groups and working committees, OPAPP officials and secretariat staff made up the rest of the delegation.
