Briefly ‘Metro Cagayan’ THE City government of Cagayan de Oro is adopting a bigger picture approach in order to strengthen the city’s strategic role in the development of Northern Mindanao region, according to City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno in his first 100 days report.

“The current administration intends to collaborate closely with other provinces and cities to bring about economic growth and sustainable development in the region,” said Mayor Moreno.

To achieve strong collaboration and partnership among neighboring cities and provinces along developmental efforts, the City Chief Executive vowed his administration’s active involvement and participation in the Regional Development Council and the Regional Peace and Order Council so as to boost the city’s leadership position in the region.

Substandard products ILIGAN City -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) of Iligan conducted a disposal activity of substandard/ uncertified electrical, building and construction materials, electrical appliances and selected consumer products like Christmas lights and lighters, after the city flag raising ceremony..

These products are believed to be one of the major causes of fires in the country, said Ruel B. Paclipan, provincial director, DTI Iligan City/Lanao del Norte.

The city government officials and employees led by Mayor Celso G. Regencia witnessed the crushing of those disposed products with the use of the road roller.

These products were apprehended from nine establishments- six from Iligan City and three from Lanao del Norte, during a joint LPCC and Bureau of Fire monitoring on November and December last year.

BPO companies in Cebu halt operations after magnitude 7.2 earthquake MANILA – Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and other contact center companies in Cebu temporarily halt their operations after Central Visayas was hit by magnitude 7.2 earthquake Tuesday morning.

“Contact centers in Cebu have temporarily ceased operations to ensure the sa fet y of t hou sa nd s of employees,” a statement of Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) said.

CCAP President Benedict Hernandez also noted that contact center buildings have

been evacuated immediately after earthquake took place.

Hernandez also mentioned bu i ld i ng ow ners a nd engineers will be conducting structural assessments on infrastructures in order to ensure safety.

“Re-ent r y i nto t he buildings will only commence once the buildings have been

cleared that they are safe,” he said.

Poultry growers suffer losses due to lower farmgate prices POULTRY growers belonging to the United Broiler Raisers Association (Ubra) said they suffered losses due to the decline in the farmgate price of live chicken three weeks ago.

Ubra President Gregorio San Diego said small poultry growers incurred losses despite the stability of the price of dressed chicken sold in wet markets.

“The farmgate price for live chicken went down to P45 per kilogram three weeks ago, lower than the production cost pegged at P70 per kilo,” San Diego told reporters in a text message.

He said farmgate price improved only recently, going up to P78 per kilo, while dressed chicken sold in wet markets settled at P130 per kilo.

Sa n Diego made t he statement after Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the price of chicken meat should be cheaper because of lower farmgate prices due to more supply.

“There is enough supply of pork and meat products.

Our problem with chicken is the oversupply,” said Alcala during t he recent 20t h

International Agribusiness Exhibition and Seminars held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Alcala urged wet market vendors and traders to reduce their prices to allow more consumers to enjoy chicken meat.

Alcala noted that the Philippines is already a top exporter of Yakitori chicken to Japan.

“As you know, Japan is very strict with the quality

THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Monday appealed to the public “not to eat female crabs” in order that they could increasingly reproduce.

The appeal was made during Monday’s launching of the “Huwag Habulin, Hulihin, at Kainin ang Babae” campaign.

In Monday’s seafood breakfast, BFAR Director Asis G. Perez explained “an adult female crab in its full reproductive cycle can produce at least three million crablets which in turn could produce millions more when they mature.”

Latest data from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics show a slight decrease in t he production of mud crabs in terms of volume with figures from the last three quarters registering at 6,357.08 metric tons (4th quarter 2012), 3,839.69 MT (Q1 2013), and 3,462.60 MT (Q2 2013), respectively.

This prompted the BFAR to encourage consumers to buy male crabs instead whose meat is much tastier and lower in saturated fat compared to their female counterparts.

The BFAR added the consumers need not worry about picking the wrong crab,

as crab genders are easily identified by their “apron” or flap on the underbelly.

On the other hand, male crabs have narrower, pointed flaps while mature female crabs have broader, rounder aprons.

However, Perez cautions crab buyers from buying what the local vendors call “gay” or “bakla” crabs whose flaps are often narrower than adut female crabs but bigger than male crabs. “’The Huwag Habulin, Hulihin, at Kainin Ang Babae’ (campaign) is just one of our many programs geared to revive our once lively fisheries resources,” Perez said. AVERAGE dealers’ prices of four fertilizer grades in September continue to drop year-on-year and monthon-month, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) said Friday.

Prices of urea slipped by 13.88 percent to P1,110.88/ sack from P1,289.99/sack in the same period last year and by 2.31 percent from P1,137.99/sack in August.

US launches new $100 bill WA SH I NGTON -- T he United States has launched a new $100 bill that comes with, for the iconic greenback, a new touch of color, as well as special features to foil counterfeiters.

In its first remake since 1996, the $100 banknote, which takes a key role in cash transactions for everyone from small traders to big drug traffickers worldwide, sports the traditional portrait of American Revolutionary War statesman Benjamin Franklin on the front.

On the back, too, it depicts Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.

But it adds a yellowish “100’’ in one corner and, next to Franklin, a tan quill

and bronze-colored inkwell t hat holds inside it t he Philadelphia Liberty Bell in changing colors from darker brown to green, depending on the angle the note is held.

Cutting vertically through the middle of the banknote is a blue security ribbon that shows numerous small Liberty Bells and 100s printed in darker blue, which appear to move as the note is shifted.

“The prospect up to the third quarter seems to point the full-year performance upwards of 10 percent,” Un i on B a n k pr e s i d e nt Victor Valdepenas today told reporters.

“The first nine months is very positive compared to the previous year because there’s the capital market consolidation,” he said.

Valdepenas said the low interest rate environment supported the bank’s retail market growth as well as corporate lending.

Honda treats TODAs to a special day at Honda’s Batangas plant—It was a special day for members of various Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) groups from around Luzon, who were all gathered by Honda Philippines, Inc. Gov’t searches for eco-friendliest agencies MANILA – Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) is calling on Metro Manila-based national government agencies and GOCCs to join the second search for this region’s ecofriendliest public offices.

EMB Office of the Director OIC Dr. Eva Ocfemia noted the agencies’ participation will help promote sustainable environmental management in both public and private sectors. ”As government offices, we must lead by example,”

she said.

Ac c ord i ng to E M B , interested parties have until Jan. 31, 2014 to signify intent to join the search.

Such parties must file respective ‘Intent to Join’ forms from the environment department, EMB said.

To determine the search’s winners, each aspirantof f ice w i l l be assessed in terms of four Ps in its environmental management program (84 percent) and other environment-related programs (16 percent).

Those four Ps are policy, promotion awareness, people and practice.

Electricity conservation, waste management, water consumption, fuel consumption, air pollution

prevention and greening are initiatives for assessment under an aspirant-office’s environmental management program.

The aspira nt-of f ice’s other environment-related programs for assessment are emergency preparedness, green procurement as well as order, cleanliness and safety.

Winners of the search will be formally recognized next year in November when the country annually marks

PHL advances crackdown vs biodiversity loss MANILA – The government further gained headway in sav ing Phi lippine biodiversity, boosted by its law enforcement-boosting convergence strategy that mobilizes public and private partners for the undertaking.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sec. Ra mon Paje sa id t he convergence resulted in nationwide conf iscation of i l lega l ly ha r vested forest products and nearly 25 million board feet of contraband timber as of June 2013 as well as 8,842 exotic and endemic birds, insects, reptiles and mammals from January 2010 toAugust 2012. ”Biodiversity is the vital resource upon which every generation depends on,” he said, explaining need for such action.

Paje noted that the convergence-led confiscations are in line with Executive Order 23 series 2011, which bans logging in natural and residual forests nationwide, and Republic Act 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001).

EO 23 and RA 9147 are also two of government’s instruments for enhancing management of t he Philippines’ 240 protected a re a s (PA s) u nder R A

7586 (National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 1992).

SMEC needs P1B to rehab Aleco THE San Miguel Energy C or p or a t ion (SM E C) needs about P1 billion to rehabilitate Albay Electric Cooperative (Aleco), Albay Governor Joey Salceda said.

SMEC, the power unit of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC), won the bidding for Aleco’s maintenance and operation.

The mu ltisectora l ALECO stakeholders, in a referendum recently, chose SMEC over another electric cooperative to manage the electric cooperative.

In a media orientation spearheaded by the Phi lippine Independent Power Producers A s s o c i a t i o n ( P I P PA ) Tu e s d a y, S a l c e d a s a i d SMEC can earn as much as P600 million annually from Aleco.

management of the electric c o op e r at i ve a nd A le c o sta keholders w il l retain the ownership.

A L E C O w a s disconnected of its power supply on July 30, 2013 due to unpaid debts to several power generators. Power was reconnected about 5 pm the following day.

Salceda attributed the disconnection to “failure to collect, failure to bill, and system losses.”

He said Aleco’s system loss is about 24 percent.
