THE regional police command in Northern Mindanao has raised a “double alert” status as armed conflict rages in Lanao Del Sur since Saturday, a police officer said Monday. P/Supt. Surki Sereñas, regional police spokesman, said that a terror group known as the “Maute Gang” lay siege the town of Butig in Lanao Del Sur last Saturday. He said that the police immediately raised the “double alert” status in coordination with the military in anticipation of a possible spill over of the armed conflict in bordering towns of Northern Mindanao.

Mindanao filmfest DAVAO City -- About 58 short films and three full-length films and documentaries will be screened during the 12th Mindanao Film Festival which will be held this December 7 to 13 at Gaisano Mall Cinema 6. Opening the festival on December 7 will be the fulllength independent film “Baboy Halas” helmed by Dabawenyo filmmaker Bagane Fiola. Another notable screening is the 2016 Busan International Film Festival Mecenat Awardee (Best Documentary) “Crescent Rising” by Zamboangueno filmmaker Sheron Dayoc. Baboy Halas which tells the story of a Matigsalug hunter and his family living in the forest of Marilog received the Jury Prize given by NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) and Best Artistic Contribution for Cinematography which was awarded during this year’s QCinema International Film Festival held in Quezon City.

AVAO City -- The Mindanao-based women leaders from the Bangsamoro communities went on a three-day workshop to enhance mediation skills through values based dialogue and public conversations vowing to keep the peace tables open amid hardship and struggles in Mindanao. Coming from as far as Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani and General Santos City), Davao region and Zamboanga, the women leaders showed their solidarity with the peace process. The workshop runs from November 28 to 30 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel. Among them were the chairperson of the GRP Implementing Panel of the Bangsamoro Peace Accords Irene “Inday Santiago, chairperson of Regional Commission on Bangsamoro Women of ARMM Sittie Jehann Mutin, a member of the peace negotiating panel for talks with National Democratic Front (NDF) Angela Librado, Nida Dans of the Mothers for Peace and the different leaders of women local organizations from the indigenous peoples.
