Seized onions

A JOINT team from the regional customs and agriculture offices has confiscated 18 40-foot container vans containing imported red onions, valued at P57 million, at the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) sub-port in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, officials said Tuesday.

Acting on information from the Special Task Group on Economic Intelligence (STG-EI), personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) 10 (Northern Mindanao) inspected the containers with cargoes declared to be cream, flavored nuts, and other food products but were instead found to contain onions.

Also part of the task force are the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency.

Rice production COTABATO City – Some 1,500 farmers in two Lanao del Sur towns are expected to boost their rice production with the operation of the P10-million Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) solar-powered irrigation system (SPIS).

Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) – BARMM Minister Mohammad S. Yacob said Tuesday that the project has solar panels and 20 horsepower (HP) generation capacity, capable of accumulating 3.5 cubic meters of water per minute with 660 cubic meters that can supply water for 50 to 70 hectares of paddy fields.

"We hope that the project will succeed and become a model for uplifting the livelihood of farmers in Lanao Del Sur, as well as in the whole Bangsamoro Region," he said in a statement.

Indemnificsation BUTUAN City -- Almost P400,000 worth of financial assistance has been extended on Thursday to hog raisers affected by the African swine fever (ASF) in the Caraga Region.

Emmylou Presilda, the Information Officer of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Caraga, told the Philippine News Agency on Friday that a total of P385,000 worth of financial aid were released to raisers in this city and the towns of Buenavista and Las Nieves in Agusan del Norte.

“The continuing release of indemnification of ASFaffected hog raisers is in line with the swine insurance program of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) as per memorandum issued by Agriculture Secretary William Dar,” Presilda said.

UBGAN, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte -- A large-scale mining firm has stopped its operations in this village shortly after authorities confirmed in a dialogue that it did not have the required permits, San Francisco Mayor Val Pinat said.

The dialogue on Tuesday at the pastoral center in San Francisco was attended by the mining company, townsfolk, and officials from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)-Caraga and other government agencies.

“I told the company (GoSun Siargao Waves Corp.) to pull out their heavy equipment units in the area,” Pinat told MindaNews on Thursday night.

He said the firm’s operations have caused environmental damage.

234 hogs culled in Lanao Norte towns due to ASF

WO adjoining towns in Lanao del Norte province have culled a total of 234 hogs from 44 swine raisers after the Department of Agriculture (DA) found them infected with the African swine fever (ASF).

In an interview Friday, ASF focal person Dr. Jules Maquiling, of the DA10's (Northern Mindanao)

veterinary division, said of the total number of hogs culled, 127 were from 34 farmers in Barangay Sta. Cruz in Maigo town, and another 107 from 10 farmers in Barangay Liangan East, Bacolod town.

"Bacolod opted to depopulate hogs in the area (Purok 6) as they showed similar (ASF) signs, history patterns, and death in the area. The site is also

included in the one-kilometer radius of an index case in Maigo," he said.

Maquiling said the local governments promised to pay an indemnification of P2,000 per culled hog to the affected hog raisers, as well as another P2,000 from the provincial government.

He also urged municipal agriculture offices in the province to encourage and assist

farmer-hog raisers in registering to the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).

PCIC is a government-owned and controlled corporation that provides insurance protection to farmers against losses arising from natural calamities, plant diseases, and pest infestations of their crops as well as their livestock and poultry.

The DA-10, in an earlier

statement, said they had started gathering specimens from the two towns for ASF testing as early as November 3.

After the result came out, Collado said the agency made coordinated and ground activities to contain the disease.

Task group formed to probe killing of CDO solon's son, caretaker POLICE have set up a special investigation task group (SITG) on Friday to look into the killing of a congressman's son and his business caretaker in Barangay Pagatpat here.

Lt. Col. Michelle Olaivar, Police Regional Office (PRO)10 (Northern Mindanao) spokesperson, said in a radio interview the SITG has begun looking into information and pieces of evidence related to the deaths of Roland Sherwin Uy, 45,

a councilor of Barangay Carmen; and Samuel Pabalan, 70, the caretaker of the Uy family's sand and gravel business.

Uy was the son of Cagayan de Oro 1st District Rep. Rolando Uy, who is running for a mayoral seat; and brother of Vice Mayor Rainier Joaquin Uy, who is also seeking to replace his father in the congressional seat.

The two were shot by an armed assassin at 1 p.m.

Thursday at a quarry site in Sitio Perico, Barangay Pagatpat near the Iponan River.

The gunman, together with an accomplice, reportedly sped off aboard a motorcycle after the incident.

"As what our regional director, Brig. Gen. Rolando Anduyan, ordered, the investigation should have 'no stones left unturned,'” Olaivar said.

In support of this program, there were different Best Practices in reading conducted including reading assessments using the PHIL-IRI and Entryway Tools. The results were utilized for planning a

sound-school-based reading program and crafting of remedial reading activities.

The objectives of Project READ are to: (1)Improve students’ proficiency in English through reading; (2) Develop students' reading habits of various reading materials/resources; (3) E n c o u r a g e t h e l ov e of reading and help students

become life-time readers and learners; (4) Develop students' specific reading skills using the different strategies and techniques in reading; (5) Increase achievement /master y level in English and other subjects using English as a medium of instruction; (6) Improve learners’ reading levels from frustration level to independent level; and (7) Address the reading gap of learners.

Reading is one major skills upon which other skills/learnings and other subject areas are based.

Helping our students de velop st rong re ading skills can make them succeed in their work in the content fields.

During this pandemic where learners are staying at home most of the time, our school reading center keeps on designing innovative ac tivities to sustain the reading interest of our learners for them to have continuity in the development of their reading skills in terms of reading speed and comprehension.

Waives 5kg excess baggage fee for fully-vaxxed passengers

'Coal Phase-Out' is Imperative

RAVANERA While an increasing number of countries in the world have committed to stop the burning of coal, we were shocked to know as bannered in Business Week Mindanao recently that “The Department of energy (DOE) has steered clear of any commitment to phase out coal fired power plants in the Philippines, as stipulated in its pledge to the ongoing 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) Climate Change Summit in Glasgow, Scotland.”

That is the position of the energy department! Is that the stand of the Filipino people? Is that the stand of the Church in reference to the Pope Francis Encyclical Letter

as embodied in Lau Datu Si? Categorically NO! Since 2010 when the government was putting coal fired power plants in Mindanao, the cooperatives were holding Power Summits all over Mindanao and people came by the thousands. They asked, why must we put up coal fired power plants when our country oozes with watershed that can generate enough hydro-electric power and renewable energies? They contented that there is no need to put-up coal fired power plants to stop power shortages but to maintain and optimize hydro-power plants.

We have stated in strongest possible term that BURNING COAL IS LEADING CAUSE OF SMOG, ACID RAIN AND GLOBAL WARMING. As pronounced then by the Union of Scientists, ”in an average year, a typical coal plant generates 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxides as cutting down 161 million of trees 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide which causes acid rain that damages forest, lakes and buildings, and forms small

airborne particles that can penetrate deep into lungs; 500 tons of small airborne particles which can cause chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma and premature death, and so many toxic chemicals such as 225 pound arsenic which can cause cancer.”

Well, that is what a typical coal plant can do, typical meaning just around 100 megawatts. As culled from DOE data, in Mindanao alone, we have six (6) coalfired- power plants with a total megawatts of 2,277, namely: the 600-megawatt Malita coal plant of SMC Global Power Holdings of the San Miguel group in Davao; 552MW Kauswagan coal plant of GNPower in Lanao del Norte; 405MW FDC Utilities Inc. plant of the Filinvest group in Misamis Oriental; 300MW Therma South facility of the Aboitiz group in Davao; 210MW coal plant of Alsons Power Group in Sarangani; and the 210MW STEAG coal plant in Misamis Oriental.

Trust or reliance? What does faith mean for you, my dear readers? To say it clearly: without faith we are really nothing. Faith is belief; believe in us, beliefs in our works, talents and personalities. Faith - a great challenge in us and our future.

We also should believe in our parents or better, in the whole family including the black sheep, who can be found everywhere. We should also believe in our friends, even sometimes it seems to become

a very difficult task. A friend?

A real friend? An expatriate friend...?

Without faith, we will be reaching the rock bottom.

Please don't say, it's a likely story. The German poet Johann Christian Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1815) mentioned in his drama "Maria Stuart": "Even the word might be dead, but faith keeps it alive." Yes, I can live with this.

Faith and hope belong together. In his book "Through the Valley of the Kwai", Scottish officer Ernest Gordon wrote of his years as a prisoner of World War II. The 6'2'' man suffered from malaria, diphtheria, typhoid, beriberi and jungle ulcers. Many circumstances quickly plunged his weight to less than 100 pounds. Lying in the dirt of the death house, he waited to die. But every day, a fellow prisoner came to wash his

wounds and to encourage him to eat parts of his own rations.

As this fellow prisoner nursed Ernest back to health, he talked with the agnostic Scotsman of his own strong faith in God and showed him that, even in the midst of suffering - there is hope - and faith!

Faith is indeed tantamount to convincing and conviction.

Richard Wagner, a German classical composer and poet found the following lyric: "Blessed are those people, who know how to live their life in humility and faith!"

Well, let's even continue believing in our government.

Faithful hope is loyal, reliable, exact and honorable.

Parents should spend quality time together, doing things together give them a sense of support and confidence. Reading the lessons together is one of the best ways to be close with the child’s learning at school.

As parents it is important to oversee the child’s activity in school and at home.

Balancing the time between the lessons and playtime and rest is important to have a quality students’ life.

It is also important that parents should make sure that children are provided with a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere at home. Parents should assure their children that you will have your back whatever comes their way.

DO you love working with people and making sure they have everything they need to perform at their best? Are you the kind of person who loves encouraging others and thinking of ways to make their wok or life easier?

Then I guess I’m ready for a human resource job.

There are several different focus areas in human resources: recruiting and staffing, compensation and benefits, training and learning, labor and employee relations and organization development. Depending on your role and the size of company for which you work, your tasks may focus just on one area or multiple ones.

HR addresses concerns expressed by the employees, hires top talent and oversee the departure of current job holders and create career development programs.

And the people are indeed correct as thousands have already afflicted by cancer because of these coal-fired power plants.

The decision of t he DOE not to phase out coalfired powered plants is a manifestation of a lack of political will that bows down to the whims and caprices of these capitalists. It should now dawn to the DOE and to everyone the truism that when the burning of coal continues, the greenhouse gas effect-trapping continues in our planet at an ever increasing rate, we are rapidly reaching a point of no return.

As so much veneration to the profit motive continues that has already captured the mindset of all governments and all institutions that has buried humanity to so much materialism and consumerism, let us revisit what His Holiness Pope Francis has underscored in his encyclical pronouncement in Lau Datu Si on care for our common home. His Holiness critiqued consumerism and irresponsible development, lamented environmental degradation and climate change and called all people of the world to take swift and united action.

It is in this light that we now call all Filipinos to unite and strongly advocate for the phase out of coal fired power plants especially in the land of the brave and the free – Mindanao that has already lost its ecological integrity with the conversion of the choicest of lands – about 200,000 hectares to massive plantations that are supplying the consumerist lifestyle

of the people in advanced countries that are heavily using chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that have already contaminated the water-tables because of the eight chemicals these corporations are using, seven are already banned in other countries. We supply high value products to advanced countries while we cannot even produce basic staples like rice and milk to our people!

Hunger and malnutrition are high in Mindanao, a mockery of the its name as the “food basket” of the country. Let us remember the constitutional adage that “the welfare of the people is the supreme law,” and not the interest of a few oligarchs. Enough is enough of oligarchical control!

The Ayala group has changed dramatically during the last 40 years. When Fernando and I started in Ayala, AC and Ayala Land were one company.

Manila Water did not exist.

Globe was a telex company.

IMI just had one plant in Manila. BPI took pride in its ATM network as their technology differentiator.

Institutions need to evolve and change. We must never be scared to do that. We must encourage it and be comfortable with it in order to adjust to the changing needs, changing times and changing environment.

“Finally, we must be cognizant of environmental change and be able to adopt to it as well. The environment has changed and in many ways. Issues of inclusion, issues of the environment, issues of where capitalism is going and how good it is as a model, issues of governance, issues of climate. These are issues Fernando and I used to wrestle with. Now these ideas have become mainstream. …I like to think we have been ahead of the curve. We have been thinking about these things for some time. …

All the leadership team, the Mancom think very similarly about these things. I hope we stay that way, that we want to be part of institutions that leave their mark positively in our society. Vibrant, charting new paths.”

Shell NSAC’s Virtual Art Interact: How young creative minds can ‘restART’ the nation’s future

THE resourcefulness and creativity of young artists can be a powerful voice in moving the country forward, as the empowering messages in their pieces can reignite expression, the hope of the people, and the restrengthening of the economy. This was the timely and powerful idea that reverberated during the recent Virtual Art Interaction, now on its second year and held by the long-running Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC).

The event’s ‘restART’ theme also signified that the nation’s future can be rebuilt and revitalized through art.

Launched by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation 54 years ago, the NSAC annually convenes aspiring young artists, masters, and art enthusiasts to champion Filipino artistry and creativity. The event also provides student and rising artists an avenue where they can both showcase their works, as well as learn from masters how to succeed in this unique, if challenging industry.

“Art has the power to change hearts and minds and communicates messages through a powerful display of sound, visuals, and all of these combined. Filipinos can use the power of their art to keep the Philippines moving forward,” said Conrad Parizal, the Social Performance Adviser for Downstream of Pilipinas Shell.

The power of conceptual art

Shell NSAC’s restART vision calls

for young artists to come together to visualize a brighter tomorrow for all Filipinos, using their work and skills.

Art has the power to influence society, form opinions, and instill values because it can translate messages and experiences across language, time, and culture, as it acts as a vehicle for social change. The pieces of art created during the event emphasize the importance of hope which can rise when artists and the public work together.

Multimedia artist Emard Cañedo, explained further the role that art plays during these challenging times: “Art is a form of therapy. It helps us cope with the pandemic. In the long run, after the pandemic, those who practiced art can utilize it as a tool to express themselves.”

The event highlight was a deep dive into Conceptual Art, where the artist makes use of the materials he has available to get their ideas across.

This includes exploring alternative resources like charcoal, crayons, lipstick or other beauty items, used newspapers and magazines, and cardboard boxes.

Then Cañedo, a visual artist and art educator whose works probe the current socio-political conditions through visual idioms, held a one-hour workshop on ‘Still Life: Finding Life in Art in the Time of Crisis.’ Joining him in the panel discussion was 2007

NSAC Winner Gino Bueza whose art specializes in the elements of collage, where fragmented images are merged into layered juxtapositions of color, pattern, and form.

Bueza reinforced his belief in conceptual art, saying, “Joining NSAC makes me happy and helps me to be

resourceful with the limited materials.

Limited material is not a blockade to express the message you want to say – but it can build confidence.”

How to succeed in art

Virtual Art Interact emphasized how young artists can further develop and challenge their art process. Given

limitations in resources during times of crisis, the workshop students learned how to use different and ‘ordinary’ materials to enhance their art practice.

Leaders from the art world also gave their insights on and guidance to the students on how to be a successful

artist.

“Support is really important in this field, like what Shell is doing: providing a future platform where artists can showcase their piece,” said comic book writer and illustrator Berlin Manalaysay.

Carla Francisco, the almostarchitect turned art intern, pointed out another factor to success: “[Be] willing to learn. Ask from those who know more. The successful artists took the time to learn, and asked the right questions.”

Filipino-Asian modern and contemporary artist Richard Buxani agreed, then adding that “people from diverse backgrounds can easily adopt. Let’s say you have a degree in accountancy, how do you combine numbers with your work in Fine Arts?

Or if you have a degree in chemistry, how do you weave that with sculpture?

It starts with passion.”

In his closing message, Cañedo encourages his younger colleagues: “Don’t be shy to explore ideas. What we need is to continue with progress.”
