Davao tourism DAVAO Oriental -- Determined to make Davao Oriental a premier eco-tourism destination, Gov. Corazon N. Malanyaon cited one of the province’s best diving sites as another potential area for development of infrastructures that would open doors to a multitude of opportunities in tourism and investments. She was referring to develop the Tagabebe Diving Spot, locally known as ‘The Wall’ in the sleepy and quaint town of Governor Generoso, which seasoned divers, who have visited the area, consider one of the greatest diving sites in the world. With gently sloping reefs and vertical wall peaking at 20 to 200 feet deep, this diving site has a vast stretch of sea grass fields and corals that provides protected niche for a variety of marine life. While Davao Oriental is touted to have the region’s longest coastline at 513 kilometers, divers say it is no surprise that Davao Oriental has a wide selection of impressive and dramatic dive locations that includes the ‘The Wall’ in Governor Generoso.
More hydro power AN OFFICIAL from Hedcor, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Power, is planning to put up three more hydro power projects in Mindanao. Rene Ronquillo, president and chief-operating-officer (COO) of Hedcor, said they are looking for the potential sites in Kitao-tao in Bukidnon and Davao City. “We look for sites that have good hydro potentials, meaning a lot of water in the elevation. Then, check for sites where you don’t have other developers who have already got their contracts. The way contracts work, it’s first come, first serve basis,” he said, adding that the company has yet to determine how much investment the company will pour in for these projects. The power firm will push through with the construction only if the Manolo Fortich Hydropower Project will be successful.

More renewable sources up for Mindanao grid
The Senate will resume its discussion on the BBL this week. Coloma said that the Palace has high expectations that Congress will listen to the emerging public sentiment that favors the enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. When asked what if the lawmakers amend some provisions in the BBL, Coloma said they will respect it as it is part the legislative process. bbl/PAGE 11

MORE than 160 megawatts of hydropower is set to add up to the coal and diesel dominated power sources in Mindanao which is currently experiencing lack of supply amid growing demand. The Alcantara-led Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. (ACR) said the company still has 160-MW of hydropower to its portfolio of generating assets. Joseph C. Nocos, ACR vice-president for business d e ve l opm e nt , s ai d t h e company currently has service contracts for renewable energy (RE) projects totaling 94 MW. “We have applied for
around 70 MW more in other locations in Mindanao,” Mr. Nocos said last week. He said the company’s RE focus will be on hydropower de velopment, g iven its affordability, sustainability, availability of resource, and proven technology. “Unlike solar, hydro is less challenging especially in determining its longterm sustainability,” said Mr. Nocos. “Solar is not as simple as putting up a solar panel wherever you want to put, you have to select the most viable location for solar,” he explained. renewable/PAGE 11
