Mushroom production BUTUAN City – With the huge number of tourists exploring the marvelous Island of Siargao and the increasing demand for food supply, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) carried out a Community-Based Mushroom Production Training for Dapa Overseas Filipino Workers Association (DOFWA) on April 21-22.

DA Research Specialist Jason O. Dalapo tackled the different mushroom species including the benefits derived from it.

Dalapo thereafter discussed and demonstrated the steps in the propagation using the Tissue Culture Method.

The 28 DOFWA members who participated in the training were given time to perform the spawning process using rice straw and glass bottle, among others.

Contemporary indoor growing techniques were likewise introduced to the members.

Bukidnon Hydro project reach 1 millionth Safe Man-hour

A W H O L LY- o w n e d subsidiary of AboitizPower, Hedcor Bukidnon, Inc and its contractor Sta Clara International Construction achieved one millionth safe man-hours with no lost time accident in building the Manolo Fortich Hydro 2 Project in the Province of Bukidnon.

The 1,000,000 is the equivalent of 672 individuals working safely for 400 days.

Hedcor follows operating practices and safety standards that safeguards all team members. It is the policy of Hedcor to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions. Accident prevention and efficient production go hand-in-hand.

“No job shall be considered

The Manolo Fortich Hydro 1 with a capacity of 43.4 MW is 46% complete. It is contracted

by JV Angeles Construction Corporation. Meanwhile, 25.4-MW Manolo Fortich 2 is pegged at 27% with Sta Clara as the contractor. The two plants will be commissioned by second quarter of 2017.

DSWD: 57,000 bags of rice still available for El Niño farmers AB OUT 57,729 bags of rice are still available at the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office X which are ready to be distributed to the El Niño affected communities in Northern Mindanao should local government units need resource augmentation from the Department to respond to the El Niño-affected communities.

The bags of rice are intended as assistance for the farmers and their families who have been affected by the drought that has been drying up farmlands since November 2015. 65,070 bags of rice were purchased by the DSWD from the National Food Authority for such cause.

Each bag contains 50 kilos of rice. Each family is allocated 25 kilos for their consumption. Nestor B. Ramos, Regional Director of the DSWD Field Office X, says that these bags are ready to be released to the affected communities, but the Local Government Units need to submit their proposal and master list of beneficiaries first before these can be distributed to them.

“The allocation for each LGU is dependent on the proposal and master list of beneficiaries that they submit to us,” Ramos says.

“We are encouraging our LGUs to fast track their request to the DSWD so that we can mobilize ourselves in distributing these bags of rice to their constituents. We also need them to be ready in the howling of these bags to their areas,” Ramos emphasized.

“As of April 23, 2016, we have only released 7,341 bags or 12% of the total number of purchased bags of rice from the NFA-X. This means that

more than 43,000 families in Northern Mindanao have received these rice or about to receive them by April 29, 2016,” Ramos said.

The DSWD has recently conducted dialogues with the diocese in Bukidnon and

Misamis Oriental and with civil society groups to help in the distribution of the bags of rice. “We were able to get the support of the Church and civil society groups in the distribution of the bags dswd/PAGE 11

It is a known principle that motivations have emotional impact on student learning interest and his rate of learning as well as the duration and retention of what he learned.

Mathematics is an abstract subject. The teaching of this subject needs some sort of motivational introduction.

Motivations determine the presence and vigor of activity, it is the best means to learning process and the psychological factor in learning. Teachers of mathematics must understand the basic motives already present in their learners. PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) announced on Friday it had finalized a purchase agreement with Airbus covering the firm order of six A350-900s, with a list price of close to US$2 billion, plus six options.

The A350 XWB (with a list price of US$304.8 million each) will become the flagship of PAL’s future long haul fleet for non-stop flights to the US and new destinations in Europe.

PAL is considering to service Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Hamburg (Germany), on top of London (United Kingdom), which the airline has been serving for the third year now.

The PAL-Airbus contrac t f irms up a Memorandum of Understanding announced earlier this year during the Singapore Airshow.

The A350 XWB is the newest member of the Airbus wide-body family. Already, the aircraft manufacturer has recorded 783 firm orders for this model from 42 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful wide-body aircraft ever.

The A350 XWB reduces fuel burn and emissions by 25 percent and is cheaper to maintain, Aside from having the most modern aerodynamic design, carbon fibre fuselage and wings. For passengers the extra-wide cabin offers more personal space, including 18-inch wide seats as standard in economy class.

“With the A350 we will introduce a whole new level of comfort for long haul flights, with more personal space in all classes, a quieter cabin and the very latest on-board amenities,” according to PAL President and COO Jaime J. Bautista. pal/PAGE 10

Philex Mining net income rises

PHILEX MINING Corp. saw its net income rise by 38% in the first quarter versus the year-ago level as it kept its costs and expenses low, even as metal prices continued to be unstable.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Thursday, the miner said it booked P420 million in earnings in the first-three months of the year, rising from the P305-million recorded in the comparable year-ago period.

Its core net income, or earnings from its main businesses minus its expenses and revenues from other activities, surged 82% to P380 million from P214 million the previous year.

“The performance was attributed to the Company’s strong resolve to work efficiently and bring down costs and expenses amid the volatility in metal prices,” it said in a statement.

The miners output improved in the quarter, but gains were capped with commodity prices depressed.

Its Padcal mine in Benguet operated for 90 days versus 88 days in the same period last year, it said. Ore milled amounted to 2.325-million tons against 2.221 million tons in the comparable quarters. Total revenues from metals stood at philex/PAGE 10

FDC delivered a 13% growth in net income to P7 billion last year. The

pace of earnings growth was slower than the 28% u p t i c k i n r e v e nu e s t o P49.3 billion, which got a boost from the initial recognition of electricity sales from power generation unit FDC Utilities, Inc., through independent power producer administrator (IPPA) contracts with the 4 0 - M W Un i f i e d L e y t e Geothermal Plant and the 108.5-MW Apo Geothermal Power Plant in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato.

FDC will see its maiden power generation project contributing to earnings this year with the commissioning of the first unit of the 3x135MW facility in the second

quarter, FDC Chairman Jonathan T. Gotianun told reporters after the meeting.

“Our target is to have all three [units] operating by September,” Mr. Gotianun said.

The coal-fired facility will boost the share of the power generation business t o t h e c o n g l o m e r a t e’s revenues to 20%-25% next year from 13% last year, when it made its first significant contribution to the conglomerate, Mr. Gotianun said.

The Filinvest Group is engaged sugar farming and milling as well as hospitality, besides real estate, power generation, and banking.

A referendum on PNoy Not only once has PNoy stated that the 2016 election will be a referendum on his outgoing administration. In short, it will be a big YES for his so-called Daang Matuwid if his anointed candidates win. The other side of the coin is a resounding rejection if his candidates do not make it.

Pound for pound, PNoy has outperformed presidents before him in terms of approval and trust ratings.

This could be a reason why PNoy has made such a bold assertion.

From where I sit in the peanut gallery, however, I believe PNoy may have been grossly over- confident. He may now , privately of course, be even regretting having made the statement.

From his speech and body language, PNoy is now running scared. No wonder he has pulled all the stops and has personally gone out campaigning for his candidates. It now appears as if he himself were the one seeking re-election.

As experience has taught us, the value of a presidential endorsement starts high - (at the beginning of a presidential term) and gradually diminishes towards the end thereof.

This explains the usual early mad rush to switch

sides and join the party in power immediately after a presidential election.

Balimbingan or political turncoatism actually happens in anticipation of the midterm election three years down the road. Senatorial, gubernatorial, mayoral and other wannabes scramble to seek the blessing and patronage of the incumbent.

In most cases, the wannabees succeed getting themselves elected on the back of a presidential endorsement.

What happens after the mid-term election is quite the reverse. As the incumbent approaches the “lame duck years”, the presidential influence also diminishes.

The incumbent’s ability to dispense favors is no longer as strong. Result: in the end, none but the true blue believers stick with the incumbent.

The rest – who were balimbings or political turncoats to start with – now make a bee line for the emerging strongest candidate.

Sad, but that is the reality of Philippine politics. As my Kumpadre Ding Wenceslao accurately laments: Hay buhay!

Unless a miracle happens or unless what is left of the LP political machinery delivers its command votes, PNoy

appears headed for rejection come May 9.

The only consolation for PNoy at this time appears to be Leni Robredo. From 4th position at the start of the campaign, Leni has vaulted several notches up.

One survey even showed her ahead of the next vice presidential contender. If she sustains her upward momentum, she could be the next VP. How do you account for her incredibly good showing?

For one, she has no taint whatsoever of a trapo. For another, she may have benefitted from the legacy of her late husband Jesse Robredo – who, to me, is the poster boy of an exemplary public servant.

SOURED DEBTS held by thrift banks rose by a fifth in February from a year ago to outpace the growth in total loans handed out by the lenders, data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed.

Non-performing loans (NPL) held by the thrift banks rose to P33.355 billion for the month, increasing by 20.02% from the P27.779 billion recorded in February 2015 and the P33.104 billion seen in January.

N PLs are lo ans l ef t unpaid for at least 30 days past their due date, with the NPL ratio taken as one of the measures used by the BSP in monitoring the asset quality of banks.

The jump in bad loans outpaced the 18.98% rise in tot a l cre dit hande d out by thrift banks that month at P719.535 billion, coming from P604.76 billion previously. As a result, the share of NPLs to total loans climbed to 4.64% from 4.59%.

The thrift banks’ coverage for bad debts also slipped to 72.01%, coming from 72.67% in February 2015.

Non-performing assets

held by banks -- which include foreclosed properties and other seized items of value -- stood at P55.397 billion in February, 15.7% higher than the P47.87 billion tallied a year ago.

The banks hiked their allowance for potential loan defaults to P17.313 billion in February from P14.888 billion previously. Against total loans, loan loss reserves stood steady at 3.34%.

There were 65 thrift banks operating in the Philippines as of end-2015, based on BSP data.

At end-December, soured debts held by thrift banks went up to a revised P31.399 billion, up by more than a fifth from the year-ago level of P25.373 billion, which brought the NPL ratio to 4.53%. The lenders booked a cumulative P11.786 billion in net income that year, up by 14.6% from 2014’s P10.287 billion.

The BSP regularly checks the quality of loans and assets of Philippine banks to maintain high standards for the country’s banking sector and ensure ample credit risk management.

BSP sees no urgent shift in policy yet BA NG KO S e nt r a l ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. said they still do not see any need to change monetary policy stance at the moment.

Tetangco is maintaining the same position following the US Federal Reserve’s decision Thursday, Manila time) to keep its own interest rates on hold. The move was expected across global markets.

“At the moment, we really don’t expect any major developments cropping up that would necessitate a shift in our stance of policy,” said Tetangco.

“For our local markets we await the conduct our national elections, although we don’t foresee significant changes in economic policy thrusts,” he added.

The BSP’s Monetar y Board has put on hold any rates’ adjustments since October, 2014 or unchanged for the last 12 meetings in a row. It will have its next policy meeting on May 12.

The presidential election is on May 9.

Tetangco said the US Fed’s action of keeping rates

on hold was broadly in line with expectation.

“The market will, however, continue to monitor changes in nuances and the balance of risk assessment from the Fed,” he said. “There is still the BOJ (Bank of Japan) meeting and the market is awaiting the announcement.

That should help clear up global market positioning in the very near term.”

The Monetary Board’s assessment of manageable inflation outlook and robust growth conditions continue to support keeping monetary policy settings unchanged.

Upside risks to the inflation outlook still persist, however, especially from the impact of El Niño dr y weather conditions on food prices and utility rates as well as pending petitions for power rate adjustments.

The BSP’s overnight borrowing rate remains at four percent and six percent for its overnight lending.

The interest rates on term the overnights and special deposit accounts were also kept steady. It also left bank’s reserve requirement ratios steady.

Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Friday showed that bank lending, excluding banks’ placements with the central bank’s reverse repurchase (RRP) facility, rose by 14.8 percent in

the third month this year, slower than month-ago’s 16.9 percent.

Including RRP placements, bank lending went up by 13.5 percent from last February’s 15.7 percent.

Household loans went up by 15.9 percent last March, slightly higher than the previous month’s 15.7 percent “due to growth across all types of consumer loans.”

Production loans, which accounts for more than 80 percent of banks’ total loan portfolio (TLP), jumped by 15 percent, lower than last February’s 17.4 percent.

It was driven by the 31.8 percent hike in loans extended to electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply followed by those for information and communication, 28 percent;

real estate activities, 20.2 percent; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, 13.6 percent; and financial and insurance activities, 10.6 percent.

On the other hand, loans for professional, scientific and technical activities went down by 9.6 percent.

Herbalife’s Nutrition At Work Survey Reveals Majority of Philippines’ Workforce Lead Largely Sedentary Lifestyles, Putting them at Risk of Obesity Fifth Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour seeks to address health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepen practical understanding on the benefits of a healthy, active life Herbalife, a global nutrition company, has released the findings of the new Nutrition At Work Survey, which revealed that the majority of Philippines’ workforce leads largely sedentary lifestyles, putting them at risk of obesity. The Survey1, which was designed to understand the lifestyle habits and attitudes of Asia Pacific’s modern workforce, was conducted in March

with 5,500 full-time workers in 11 Asia-Pacific markets, including 500 workers from the Philippines.

According to the sur vey findings, almost nine out of 10 (85%) workers in the Philippines spend at least six hours a day sitting at their desk, with 52% of its workforce eating lunch at their work desk two to five times per week. The survey also revealed

that majority of Philippines’ workforce (86%) exercise less than three times per week, with five out of 10 getting less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day at their workplace. This suggests a significantly worrying trend locally, on the back of rising obesity rates recorded in recent years.

Nevertheless, the risk of obesity could be averted if workers in the

Philippines decide to take control over their own nutritional intake and exercise regimen. Close to eight out of 10 workers (75%) affirmed that they strive to live a healthy, active life, however, the majority of them noted that they find it difficult to stay active during workdays.

Earth Day is celebrated every April 22 of the year to strengthen pu b l i c a d v o c a c y on the environmental issues that still need to b e addressed and preserving biodiversity.

DENR-Caraga hosts 1st Environmental Youth Forum BUTUAN CIT Y -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Caraga Region through the Regional Public Affairs Office conducted recently the first Environmental Youth Forum in the region at the Big Daddy’s Hotel and Convention Center here.

The forum with the theme “One Voice. One Goal. Multiple Action” was attended by about 110 teachers, students, youth desk officers, media practitioners, and DENR personnel.

“Our goal is to strengthen the IEC Campaign in the region,” DENR Caraga regional director Nonito M. Tamayo said.

“We want to encourage the youth to take part in environmental protection and conservation. The forum aims to cater the potentials of the students and hopefully use them in worthy endeavors that would save the environment,” he said.

Part of the forum is a radio plug/advertisement making contest. This was participated

by Grade 7 students from the different public schools in

Agusan del Norte. Kitcharao National High School bagged the first prize followed by Doña Rosario National High School in 2nd place and Santiago National High School in the 3rd place.

The winning entry was awarded with 5,000 pesos and a certificate of recognition. This radio plug will be aired through different radio stations like Hope Radio Philippines and DXRR Radyo Serbisyo Nasipit, to encourage the young people to express their talent through radio.

Three lectures were linedup for the forum. The speakers include Communications Development Officer II Maria Catherine Gonzaga, National Youth Desk Officer Maria Magnolia Danganan, and Caraga Youth Desk Officer Forester Celeste Paler.

“The youth has a great role in nation building, they are considered to be the key to a greener and a brighter future. At this early age, they should be nurtured to be the environmental defenders of the new generation,” Tamayo said.

DOLE 114th Labor Day Job Fair posts 6,000 vacancies CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) region 10 announces some 6,481 jobs are available in the upcoming 114th Labor Day Job Fair on 1 May at SM Event Center, Cagayan de Oro City.

Of the confirmed job vacancies solicited, Regional Director R aymundo G. Agravante said that around 3,773 will be available for local employment from 64 participating private companies and government agencies.

Meanwhile, the DOLE10 is expecting around 2,708 job vacancies for overseas employment from 10 recruitment agencies, as processed by the Philippine O v e r s e a s E mp l oy m e nt Administration (POEA).

To p j o b v a c a n c i e s are Customer Ser vice Representatives (700 vacant positions); Factory Workers

(600); Welder (200); and Business Transcriber (80).

Bravo said she was not able to contain her happiness especially that she almost lost hope given the number of DepEd applicants submitting every day.

Likewise, Hermenegilda C. Amerol, also an OFW returnee, worked as a teacher in Africa since 2010. At her age of 52, she too almost lost hope in pursuing again her teaching passion when she arrived back in Philippines.

But her doubts were wiped away when NRCO contacted her to be involved with the SPIMS program.

Copper production rose to 8.425-million pounds in the first quarter from 2015’s 8.361-million pounds amid steady ore grades, and resulted in P946 million in revenues.

Gold output, on the other hand, declined to 24,200 ounces from the previous year’s 25,997 ounces, with higher grade ore continuing to be naturally depleted. Revenues from gold amounted to P1.427 billion, up slightly from P1.423 billion last year.

“Gold revenues benefitted from a recovery in prices, which rose to $1,239 per ounce (1Q2015: $1,189 per ounce), while copper revenue was undermined by depressed prices at$2.25 per pound (1Q2015: $2.71 per pound),” Philex Mining said.

Revenues from silver declined to P16.8 million in the quarter versus last year’s P19.4 million. Proceeds from petroleum and other sources also fell to P23.1 million from P37.6 million with oil prices dropping significantly.

With gains from its main businesses remaining capped amid the volatile market environment, Philex Mining said it continued to manage its costs and expenses.

Consolidated costs and expenses declined by 11% to P1.674 billion from the previous year’s P1.887 billion.

Philex Mining said it will intensify exploration activities around its Padcal mine in its bid to augment current resources and possibly extend the mine’s life anew.

“The encouraging results from the Bumolo project increased confidence on further extending Padcal’s mine life beyond 2022 and, as such, activities will be advanced to the succeeding stages to reinforce the initial findings,” it said.

The youngest of the family, Vicenta, will take her grade 1AMEB piano exam this year and is also beginning to learn to play the Great Highland bagpipe.

Margaret, who turns 16 this year, and Vicenta, who turns 11 this year, has also been winning kudos for their tennis. They both play Saturday mornings for Donvale Tennis Club and both were awarded certificates last season for being the players with the best records in their two teams.

Last year, Margaret was invited to play in a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Future Stars Tournament at the National Tennis Center. She won two matches and lost one and was unable to progress, but enjoyed the experience, and is keen to have another go this year.

(Zamsureco 1), Zamboanga del Sur II Electric Cooperative, Inc, (Zamsureco II), Misamis Occidental I Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Moelci I) and the South Cotabato I Electric Cooperative, Inc. ( Socoteco I).

Santos added that the electric cooperatives were allowed to extend their power supply deals with TMI for an additional three years.

According to her, ERC approved 5 megawatts (MW) of supply to Zamsureco I starting on Jan. 6, 2015; four MW to Zamsureco II, from March 8, 2015; two MWs to Moelci I from May 15, 2015 and four MWs to Socoteco I from February 1, 2015.

The extended power requirements came from the Therma Marines two power barges in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte and Maco, Compostela Valley, both providing 200 megawatt of dependable peaking power to the Mindanao grid.

Zamsureco I provides electricity to Pagadian City, 22 municipalities of Zamboanga del Sur and the municipality of Don Victoriano in Misamis Occidental.

Zamsureco II distributes electricity to the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, three municipalities in Zamboanga del Norte and the Vitali District in Zamboanga City.

Moelci I serves portions of the power needs in the first district of Misamis Occidental and Oroquita City and Socoteco I franchise area includes Koronadal City, 8 municipalities of South Cotabato and the municipality of Lutayan in Sultan Kudarat.

“We are already on the testing stage. We are giving samples to the manufacturers.

If these are all approved, we will start importing and processing chocolates in Vietnam and supply these to exporters who in turn will distribute them worldwide,” he said.

Cue claimed that Puratos is the biggest Belgian chocolatemaker in Belgium that gets dried and fermented singleorigin cacao beans from Peru, Venezuela, Ivory Coast in West Africa, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

“The Puratos is working very hard to make us a part of the international community of cacao producers. There is a certain accreditation required, they are working cl os ely w it h C id am i – how to do the process of fermentation, so that in the world stage when you talk about Philippines they can recognize us,” he said.

He added that Puratos’ chocolate experts from Belgium did three tests on the Davao beans in Vietnam last March 2016 in an effort to improve and bring out its fruity notes.

“What they are looking for are the fruity notes that come out of chocolate. It tastes like chocolate but somehow there are notes and flavors that come out. That was the result of the third trial. They were satisfied and they would want to continue,” he said.

Cue, however, stressed that farmers must work to improve

husbandry and fermentation as he explained the science behind the quality beans which includes “temperature controls, proper storage, materials, water content, and fermentation.”

“It’s not just mere drying of the beans,” he said. Puratos has vowed to bring in technology to help out the local farmers meet quality requirements, according to Cue. Fermentation is often missed out by farmers, which is said to bring out one-third of the taste of the chocolates, according to Cue. “The quality of the seeds is one but if you get the process wrong that’s another. You’re missing one third of the stage.

We have to correct it . That’s why we sent Belgians over to educate them and we have people to monitor and do series of testings,” he added.

Although it is not being discussed as of yet, Cue said they may plan to put up a manufacturing center in Davao as he said that “40 of our products are locally manufactured. Maybe in the future, as we grow the volumes.”

Cue envisions to produce the best chocolates coming from the Philippines backed by the right science “to make it tasty and delicious.”

CIDAMI executive vice president Valente Turtur said around 70 percent of the country’s cacao supply comes from Davao Region with 21,000 hectares planted to cacao trees.

The biggest cacao producer is Davao City with 6,200 hectares followed by Davao del Norte with 5,900 hectares.

But Philippines has to import beans from Malaysia and Indonesia to fill in the shortage of 40,000 metric tons a year as the country’s production capacity only averages at 12,500 MT a year, Turtur said.

Efforts have been taken up to hush up the production capacity, for instance, the Mindanao Development Authority’s “Double Up” p r o g r a m , a n a g e n c y ’s initiative in cooperation with Department of Agriculture (DA) which was launched in July 2015. The program seeks to double the target production volume from 100,000 MT to 200,000 MT by year 2020.

At the rate that the cacao consumption is growing, Turtur said there’s a projected one million MT of global cacao shortage by 2020.

The names of the alleged illegal donors have been used as evidence in the cases filed against her. Critics cited the first election offense - on prohibited campaign contributions from foreign sources - as Robredo’s lame defense, saying, while she admitted as an integral part of her own CounterAffidavit that indeed she received contribution from abroad, she, however, a d o p t e d L o i d a L e w i s’ Sworn Statement that she received personal contributions from Loida Lewis, a dual citizen, and “Fu n d s c ol l e c t e d From Filipinos living in the Un ite d St ate s” or f rom “Filipinos abroad” or “overseas Filipinos.”

Political observers say the problem of Robredo’s defense is that her counteraffidavit and the words and phrases used on her website completely avoided the issue of whether the sources of her campaign contributions were “foreign nationals” when the truth is that, Filipinos who have been naturalized American citizens already living abroad are already foreign nationals; Filipinos who are dual citizens have foreign nationality component and are foreign nationals.

Those who are non-farmers may ask assistance to the DSWD through our Crisis Intervention programs. They can always approach our provincial offices to help them,” he said.

Ramos said the DSWD is working very hard to assist families who are affected by the drought.

SM and donors turn over its biggest housing village for Yolanda survivors in Tacloban City F or 64-year old pedicab driver Rogelio Palma Consalida, November 8, 2013 is one date he will never forget for the rest of his life. It was when super typhoon Yolanda made land fall in his hometown of Tacloban City in Leyte, and in just an hour he had lost all his possessions which took him several decades to build.

“Nawala sa amin ang lahat,” (“We lost everything,”) he declared and for over two years, he and his wife, Lolita, also 64, had to live in a cramped government housing site.

But life seems to smile on them once more as the couple are among the 400 family-beneficiaries of SM Supermalls’ biggest SM Cares Village for survivors of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

SM and its donors awarded 400 new houses in Tacloban City, Leyte to

families who were hardest hit by the super typhoon in 2013. The village will be called “Pope FrancisCFC ANCOP Canada Community – SM Cares Village.” It is the biggest of all the four SM Cares housing project as the other villages only have 200 houses each.

The first village in Bogo, Cebu has been turned over to beneficiaries in November 2014 while the second village in Iloilo City was inaugurated in October SM/PAGE B2

he recently concluded District Training Assembly (DISTAS) 2016 held last April 23, 2016 at the Grand Caprice, Limketkai Centre and hosted by the Rotary Club of Carmen Valley (RCCV) led by its dynamic and active President Joyce Quimbo Ortezuela Libot, the ever dedicated Secretary and President Elect (PE) Rotary Year 2016-2017 Susan delas AlasLonkey and Over-All Committee Chairman PAG Luis Ramon ‘Boc’ Pineda was a tremendous and a resounding success.

a basketball court, street lamps, sewage treatment plant, materials recovery facility, rain-catchment system and provisions for water and electricity.

SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation and the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., launched the housing project shortly after the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda in November 2013 to give permanent and disasterresilient houses to survivors of the typhoon in the Visayas region.

Through its tenants, business partners, service providers, employees and local communities, SM was able to raise the money needed to build the 1,000 houses, a moving proof of the people’s accord in times of emergency. Some of the donors for the SM Cares Village in Tacloban include Zonta Club, Duty Free Philippines, Forever 21, ANCOP, New Golden City Builders & Development and Philippine Daily Inquirer. Global Port and Sultan 900 donated the basketball court.

All the houses in the SM Cares Housing Village are disaster-resilient and have roofs made of

concrete slab. Vetiver grass, with leaves that can be used for handicrafts, were used in the village to control soil erosion and for better slope protection. Its roots reach up to 3 meters long.

To ensure sustainability of the project, community development programs have been put in place to make the change work for all beneficiaries. For the Tacloban housing project, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Palo (RCAP) and Couples For Christ-ANCOP (CFC-ANCOP) were the partners in charge of selecting the beneficiaries, training, livelihood and values formation to enable the new residents start a new life in their community.

SM Cares Housing Village is a testament to the solidarity that Filipinos and people all over the world have shown to help the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda. It is also personifies SM’s commitment to nationbuilding.

REMEMBERING ROSVIAS M. INOC “A Great Teacher, Dynamic Civic and Cooperative Leader, Government Servant, Dotting Father, and an Entrepreneur”

Rosvias ‘Ross’ M. Inoc in his career as a teacher was a sought after “ mentor” of the students of Holy Cross of Babak where he taught Mathematics and Economics for quite a time from the middle 1960’s to early part of the 70s. He was a practical and brilliant mentor, down to earth in his approaches which made him popular among the students and to his co-teachers.

In the tail end of 1960’s he was one of those chosen one by the late Rev. Fr. Claude Dumont, P.M.E. a FrenchCanadian Parish Priest of Babak who founded Holy Cross of Babak, Inc., as one of the leaders in forming a credit union in this part of the country patterned after the Canadian Credit Cooperative Union which dominates the economic industry of Canada.

Through his dynamic leadership In the 70s, Babak Credit Union was formed and amended its name to Babak Credit Cooperative, Inc. to give way to the growing cooperatives in the country- no longer a union of members but member cooperatorsmember owners’ for the economic growth of the community. In 1972, Babak Consumers Cooperative was formed with consumers goods sold at affordable prizes for the members and non-members. In 1974 through the initiatives of SIR INOC together

with known active coop leaders, Australian Aid grant was given to the cooperatives, thereby, a lot and building was bought at the commercial center of town of Babak and a ‘LANTSA’ was bought for copra delivery ferrying via Babak to Legaspi Oil Co. and vice versa.

Through concerted effort of the officers and the dynamic leadership of Rosvias M. Inoc, a Consumers Store with gondolas was built with the likes of Gaisano System of shopping today. The Consumers Store became a study case of credit cooperatives to build same system for economic growth. Many cooperatives from South Mindanao visited the consumers store and learned from it. In 1977, amidst its growth, there came leadership conflict and economic crisis and along the way something went wrong with all the cooperators’ endeavor, it failed and the rest is history.

Rosvias M. Inoc is a true cooperative leader giving his time and talent for the development of Babak. An honest man and works with integrity and dignity in all his dealings. Through his undying commitment to serve the people through cooperatives, Babak Cooperatives along with other cooperatives of Mindanao became incorporators of the CLIMBS, now is considered as the biggest cooperative

“MAN OF VISION” insurance and MASS-SPECC which now holds the ATM PINOY System of the country.

During his time as a civic leader and a cooperator, he worked for honest, transparent good governance of the Local Government Unit of Babak-by simply deterring any action which is detrimental to the populace. At the end he was well liked by the Local Executive and became open and work for oneness for the good of the people-like the late Mayor Manuel B. Pichon.

In 1986-after the EDSA RevolutionSir Inoc together with the writer

recommended to Namfrel Davao Province and to the National Government the Hon. Mayor Sofronio Lago, Sr., to be a transition mayor for eighteen months. Indeed Mr. Lago for eighteen months accomplished eighteen worthwhile projects up to the end of his term.

He interspersed his work in the cooperative service with his work as a Government Employee of the defunct Population Commission Office in the Province of Davao. He worked religiously as a POPCOM Officer and when

he retired from government service he put up his own commercial building which changed the business landscape of Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal and became full time entrepreneur managing his commercial building business affair.

Rosvias M. Inoc was born August 28, 1935 in Matab-ang, Cordova, Cebu and transferred to Davao in the early 1960s. He is a loving and dotting father to all his children.

He is survived by his loving wife Rita, children

Deogracias, Jose Azarias, Vittore, Aquinas, Oritias , Shiek and Shiela and Joseph (deceased) who went ahead of him to meet him in the Kingdom of God. Loving him while on earth are his 29 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He died April 23, 2016 and at the age 81 for indeed it is his real foundation to be with OUR CREATOR ETERNALLY. YOUR ARE INDEED AN INSPIRATION TO THE YOUNG GENERATION OF TODAY! MAY YOU REST IN PEACE SIR! FOLLOW THE LIGHT TO YOUR ETERNAL HOME.
