Briefly Halal exports PRESIDENT Benigno S. C. Aquino III has signed into law a consolidated measure on halal exports, amid opposition by a number of institutions led by Muslim Filipinos. In a statement yesterday, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) called on Mr. Aquino to veto the proposed Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2015. But Mr. Aquino had signed the measure three days earlier. “It appears that the message to the ordinary Muslim Filipinos is that the government is only concerned in the integrity of Halal for its export value rather than the protection of the well-being and interests of domestic Muslim consumers, thereby putting the interests of ordinary Muslim Filipino below that of foreign Muslims,” the NCMF statement read.
E-commerce SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- Some 15 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province recently participated the Expanding Your Business Thru E-Commerce seminar spearheaded by the Sector Planning Bureau E-Commerce Office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Caraga held at Go Hotels, Robinson’s Place, Butuan City. The activity is the Caragaleg of the E-Commerce Caravan conducted nationwide initiated by the agency in support to the implementation of the Philippine E-Commerce Roadmap 2016-2020. “By introducing e-commerce, micro, small and medium enterprises nationwide are exposed to a wider range of options on how to expand their market reach and do business with ease,” said E-Commerce Trade and Industry Specialist chief Maria Crispina S. Reodica.

TAKESHOLDERS in the country’s broiler industry has pushed for the optimum use of new technologies available to enhance productivity and be at far with other Asean countries. During the 2nd Bitrade Poultry Summit for Broilers held in Cagayan de Oro City recently, Bitrade president Ernesto Rodriguez said this is particularly needed by those in the mainstream food industry.

20 finalists bared for 2016 Balay Mindanaw awards BARANGAY San Vicente of Sumilao, Bukidnon joins the cast of 20 finalists in the Balay Mindanaw Awards 2016 set to be held on May 27 at the Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City. This was announced by Balay Mindanaw president and founder Charlito “Kaloy” Manlupig who said the selection of the finalists was based on the outstanding community initiatives, land rights advocacy, resiliency projects, and peace dialogues of the nominated barangays.

Therma sets shutdown of coal-fired plant in Davao By ANTONIO L. COLINA IV, MindaNews
DAVAO City — Therma South Inc. (TSI) will shut down for one month the 150-megawatt unit 2 of its coal-fired power plant in Barangay Binugao in Toril, this city, the company announced Tuesday. In a statement, TSI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp. said the shutdown will last from June 18 to July 16 to facilitate maintenance works. The shutdown will mean a loss of 130 MW from the
Mindanao grid, 20 MW being the house load or the capacity needed to run the system. TSI has scheduled another maintenance shutdown on unit 1 later this year. “Pow e r p l a nt s h av e planned shutdowns for it to run optimally and reliably,” the statement said.
