12,000 malnourished schoolchildren in Cag. de Oro public schools noted By MARK FRANCISCO, Staff Writer

MORE than 12,000 children enrolled in public schools in Cagayan de Oro City are malnourished. Mar y Ann Allera of the Cagayan de Oro City Schools Division disclosed this Tuesday in the Gawad

Kalinga-initiated End Hunger Summit held at Xavier University, prompting Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV to urge city councilors to pass a resolutions or ordinances institutionalizing a city-wide feeding program.

Rep. Johnny Pimentel of the 2nd district of Surigao del Sur, principal author of House Bill 2672 filed in August last year, said the creation of the Special Economic Zone in Bislig City will “drive employment and consumption growth and overall economic expansion” in Mindanao in general and Caraga region in particular. “We are hoping to attract Chinese investors to build factories in the economic zone, considering our government-togovernment as well as people-to-people relations with China have warmed up owing to President Duterte’s independent foreign policy track,” Pimentel, chair of the Committee on good government and public accountability, said in a press release. “We need new investors, especially in highly labor-intensive industries, to provide thousands of good-paying jobs and raise the living standards of a greater number of families in Mindanao,” he said. The bill, however, is still pending at the House Committee on Economic Affairs. ecozone/PAGE 11

Allera said the figure represents 12 percent of the total population of students enrolled in the 107 public elementary schools in the city which is around 98,000. Aquino, who was guest speaker in the one-day event, said highly urbanized cities malnourished/PAGE 11
