DAVAO City -- Visitors have suddenly arrived in droves after this city’s mayor, Rodrigo R. Duterte, won in the presidential race. However, most of them are not heading for the beach nor are they visiting highland resorts. S e ve r a l tou r i st s are rep or tedly in town for political posturing. That much has been acknowledged last week by Peter T. Laviña, spokesperson of Mr. Duterte. He said these visitors are lobbying for positions ever since Mr. Duterte’s Transition Team has been evaluating applications for the 6,000 vacancies that would have to be filled when he assumes the country’s highest post. Besides members of the national and international media who are here to cover the Philippine’s next president, well-wishers, company representatives, and politicians -- some of them losing candidates in the last elections -- have been spotted in hotel lobbies. As a result, hotel occupancy has shot up since a week before the May 9 polls, posturing/PAGE 11
