EEPER trench interconnection for Visayas and Mindanao grids via Leyte will bloat project cost, thus, transmission firm National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is undertaking an alternative feasibility study before reaching decision point by year-end. The installation of submarine cable for the Leyte-Mindanao Interconnection Project (LMIP) may require trench plunge of as deep as 34 kilometers, according to Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla. The downside to that, he said, is skyscraping probability of project cost swell to P34 billion from what was initially estimated at P24 billion to P25 billion. “The deepest that LMIP will reach is 34 kilometers… that is the most
challenging and the cost will be about P34 billion,” the energy chief stressed. But rather than be in a huff over inflated project cost, NGCP opted to push forward an alternative feasibility study on interconnecting the two grids – the other one being the Negros-Zamboanga Interconnection Project (NZIP). “NGCP is doing another study…its Negros to Zamboanga… once they finish that on December 31, a quick decision will be made whether it shall be done bloat/PAGE 7
