THE MINDANAO Development Authority (MinDA) has tapped Pilmico Foods Corp. to help with the marketing strategy for the Sorghum Development Program that aims to develop about 100,000 hectares for the crop. Pilmico Assistant Vice President Glen L. Banogon, in a statement released by MinDA, said the country’s sorghum requirements have been mostly imported and producing it locally will benefit the livestock and poultry industries. “The three main considerations for sorghum are its nutritional value, availability and cost. There’s a big potential here, with DA (Department of Agriculture) and MinDA’s assistance and facilitation in the cultivation process and Pilmico’s help in the market aspect,” said Mr. Banogon. Pilmico, an Aboitiz company, is engaged in feeds for aquaculture, livestock, and poultry.

Framework to reduce poverty
LOCAL farmers in Mindanao will soon get free training on financial literacy from banking institutions. The foundations of two financial institutions — the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc, (LCDFI) and UCPC-CIIF Foundation Inc., (Cocofoundation) on Thursday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) for the financial literacy programs to farmers in far-flung communities under the “poorest of the poor” category. The program, dubbed "Sulong Ang Pag-unlad ng mga Magsasaka/ Magniniyog" (SAPM), aims to improve the farmers' financial management skills and assist them in agricultural businesses, specifically coconut farming.

Covid-19 delays shipment of trash to South Korea THE coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outbreak in China and the spread of the virus in other countries have been factors in the delay of the shipment of the remaining 2,000 metric tons of trash back to South Korea, a Bureau of Customs (BOC) official in Cagayan de Oro City said on Wednesday. John Simon, BOC-Region 10 district collector, said the container vans that will be used for the imported
wastes did not arrive on time as operations in Chinese ports have temporarily been suspended in the past weeks due to the threat of Covid-19. “The coronavirus has disrupted the international trade supply chain in China. Even the ports of entry there have set up quarantine for the ships, so there was a delay. The containers were also delayed in arriving in the country,” Simon said. DELAYS/PAGE 11
