ROPOSALS to declare North Cotabato and Cagayan de Oro City as mining-free zones were recently approved by the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Gifts, decors and houseware (GDH) companies will undertake product innovations and other developments to gain a great competitive advantage for their sector.

A final draft of the GDH roadmap 2014-2030 noted that while many manufacturers recognize the importance of introducing new products and designs, a number of them do not consider frequent product development activities a must for the business.

Interviews and survey results indicated that some GDH enterprises have been doing the same product and same design since the company was established decades ago.

“This is one of the pitfalls of the industry causing lack of competitiveness,” it said.

Industry players thus underscored the importance of intensifying material manipulation activities.

“Foreign buyers could not emphasize more the importance of product development, especially development and/or utilization of new materials,” the roadmap added.

To this end, the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP) has projects but should be strengthened through partnering with academic institutions and expanding scope to integrate sciences with arts.

“Enhancement of Research and Development through increased linkage with the academe should be pursued. Majority of enterprises in the sector do not have the capability to introduce product innovations and other developments. Also, getting the most out of existing institutions may prove frugal but effective,” it said.

Further, the roadmap said tying up with science and engineering colleges could help introduce modern materials and other novel product features.

It said foreign consultants can be also tapped to develop designs that would sell in the foreign market.

“Designs of foreign consultants had been proven to reap benefits for the industry. This strategy has been adopted for the furniture industry and is expected to bring the same fruits for the gifts and housewares industry,” the roadmap added.

The GDH sectors aim to achieve at least five to 10 percent annual growth in exports until 2030.

There were only few who were chosen to speak directly with Him. Even though the chosen ones of the Old Testament found GOD (and His voice) quite terrifying, they answered to His call. It is a luxury, because that is the purpose of our prayers. To hear GOD’s voice, to hear His answer.

In the present days, how does GOD speak to us? How does He answer our prayers?

1. THROUGH DREAMS. Ptr. Gerald recalls the story of his wife dreaming about a warning. In the clearly detailed dream, his wife saw a man who came to visit her in

the school she was working.

Unfortunately, this was not only a friendly visit. This man was a thief and he came to take her belongings away.

True enough, the dream was a warning. The following day, the exact scene happened.

Except that the man, the very same man in her dream, was not able to take anything away from her. Why? After considering the dream to be a warning from GOD, Ptr. Gerald’s wife secured her bag safely away from the thief ’s reach.

2.

THROUGH CHANNELS. GOD uses other ways to deliver His message directly to us. He either uses people or circumstances to direct us. Living a life in grace, we simply flow. We flow with the people GOD sends us, or the circumstances he lays before us. He has seen our future, so he knows who

and what exactly to put in the right time and place.

3. THROUGH HIS WORD. This is the best way we can take GOD on His word, at His Word. Open the bible. Read the Word. There is no better way to understand GOD. Sometimes, dreams can be corrupted by the desires of the flesh. People who are supposed to be messengers are derailed by the enemy or there can be hindrances put before the circumstances laid before us. But His Word never fails. It has gone through thousands of years and countless number of people who can testify for it. The Word is the same and even though it may come in different versions or translations, the Word at its source can never be corrupted.

-ooo DEATH PENALTY IS BIBLICAL: The single biggest argument in favor of the death penalty is this: God also saw it fit to impose death on sinners and blasphemers, both in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

Yes, the death penalty is an accepted punishment, even from the Biblical point of view.

Unfortunately, no one has ever approximated or come near the truth and justness and fairness of God among men. By and large, man is unjust, unfair, and is totally imperfect, and could not be relied upon to judge fairly and accurately their fellow

human beings. Allowing an unjust, unfair, and totally imperfect man to impose the death penalty on others is therefore totally dangerous.

Especially in a legal and judicial system that is perceived as highly fluid and grossly and routinely capable of being swayed by money, power, and influence.

I suggest that our lawmakers must first aspire to craft a law that would make each and every Filipino righteous, upright, and fearing and loving God, before any death penalty is even considered.

-ooo CAN BIBLE-BELIEVING PETER LAVINIA DEMAND BRIBES? Did President Duterte fire his May 2016 election campaign spokesman Peter Tiu Lavina as chief of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), or did Lavina resign? Whatever, I believe this is no longer the question. The question is due

process, or the opportunity to defend one’s self, one’s integrity, in the face of privaate accusations that found their way into the ears of the President.

I don’t know Lavina, I don’t know Duterte, and I sure don’t know the NIA directors or officials who allegedly complained to the President that Lavina had been asking for a commission of forty percent from water projects that his agency had completed in the countryside.

But elementar y rules of fairness demanded that Duterte should have given Lavina the opportunity to explain his side first before references to the accusations against him were made to media, in a manner that betrayed the President’s acceptance of the onesided information that were given to him. We have to be clear about this.

We cannot have God without religion. They go together as far as we are concerned.

Religion is precisely our relationship with God. It’s an unavoidable thing, whether we like it or not. It has its laws and requirements that flow from God himself and that ought to be followed.

Without religion, what would God be to us?

There are some people who profess that they believe in God but not in religion.

Perhaps what they mean is that they indeed believe in God but do not want to be hampered by certain “requirements” that religion demands from them. Or they do not want what they call as “organized religion” with its doctrine and practices.

It’s like saying that they want a God that is according to their own liking, their own designs, their own terms.

They do not want to be told

what to do in their own socalled relation with God. Of course, they are quick to say that these “requirements” are simply man-made, or are mere legalisms that really have nothing to do with the essence of our relation with God. They seem to be the only ones capable of knowing how their relation with God should be. No one should intervene.

Worse, they are quick to p oint out the many inconsistencies that people who occupy positions in the Church and those who call themselves as pious, holy and religious make, to justify their rejection of their own idea of religion.

They are deflecting the issue, as if the mistakes and sins of these men and women detract from the objective need for religion.

T h i s i s u n for tu n ate because such understanding of God and religion is fatally

flawed. While religion is personal in the sense that it is unique to each individual, it is also personal in the sense that it is by definition relational and subject to the laws of God and the laws that the divinely founded Church stipulates.

To be personal is not only to be a unique individual but also to be related to God and to everybody else. A person is always a religious and social being. That is how a person is wired, and in these relations, there are universal God-given laws that need to be followed.

Of course, these laws are articulated in human terms and therefore cannot fully capture the mysterious laws of God. That is why they need to be updated, improved, polished, enriched, etc. as time goes on. But they have to be followed just the same, unless it’s clear that a particular law does not apply

Modern Calligraphy Workshop at SM City Cagayan de Oro

M City Cagayan de Oro launched The Uptown Weekend Project last Saturday, February 25, 2017 with a Modern Calligraphy Workshop.

Attended by more than 20 calligraphy art enthusiasts, the workshop was facilitated by renowned calligraphy artist, Ichini Yusoph.

Ichini hailed from Marawi and studied in Manila. She is a registered nurse by profession but her passion towards art brought her to study calligraphy, dream-

catcher making and even make-up artistry. When calligraphy became wildly popular again last 2014, she found herself captivated by this art of creating meaningful marks. She conducts workshops often in Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and her hometown, Marawi.

The 3-hour workshop started with the basics of pointed pen calligraphy. Different techniques for the brush and watercolor calligraphy were also explored. She demonstrated what tools to use and how to

achieve the beautiful thick and thin strokes of this modern art.

After the workshop, a flat lay station was arranged so that the participants can snap that perfect Instagramworthy photo of their masterpieces.

There is what they say “survival of the fittest and the need to eliminate the weak”, yes! This is what I call game of life. If you let others step on you, they will be used and enjoy doing it again and again. But if you

will show to them that you are not afraid, then no one will let you down.

L i fe i s a m atte r of acceptance. In everything we do, we commit mistakes, but let us not leave that mistake be a mistake forever, instead let us learn from it.

PHILEXPORT pushes interventions to boost trade with China

L

ocal exporters are pushing for various interventions, inclu ding supp or t for promotion and financing access, to strengthen trade ties with China, the world’s fastest-growing consumer market.

Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (PHILEXPORT) President Sergio Ortiz-Luis, Jr. said increased market intelligence and business matching will also help exporters, especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), position themselves better to successfully penetrate the huge Chinese market.

“Like most countries, China is a highly segmented marketplace where consumers and their purchasing habits differ in various regions and provinces,” he said during the Philippine-China Forum.

China consistently remained as the Philippines’ largest trading partners, ranking third on the average in the last five years.

Tr a d e l i n e s t at i s t i c s indicated that the country’s exports to China surged 2.2 percent to over $6.1 billion as of August 2016, representing an 11.4-percent share in total Philippine exports.

“We project that the growth rate of our exports

to China will increase more than that to Japan and US (United States),” OrtizLuis said. “Specifically, China’s rise as an economic powerhouse is one of the key factors that helped propel Philippine exports.”

The export group chief further said China will need to import more to sustain its 1.3 billion people and their requirements. These imports include metals, electronics and agri-based products.

“This projection is already supported by the notable increase in China’s demand for processed Philippine food products and fresh fruits like bananas, as well

as minerals and metals like iron ore, copper and nickel,” he added.

Ortiz-Luis also cited an HSBC study showing China will replace the US as the world’s largest trading nation, and that Beijing’s share of global trade will increase from 9.8 percent in 2011 to 12.3 percent by 2026.

He noted that China and other neighboring Asian nations as well play a critical role in the Philippines’ bid for progress and prosperity.

“The establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area in 2010 further expanded bilateral trade between the two,” he added.

SSS revenues jump to P160 billion State-run Social Security System (SSS) on Monday said revenues jumped to P160 billion as of end of November 2016 period.

Based on SSS’ unaudited financial statement, revenues for the January to November period in 2016 grew 8.34 percent to P160.02 billion on the back of the P10.51 billion increase in member’s contribution and higher investment income.

The recorded endNovember 2016 revenues was 8.7 percent higher than

the P120.77 billion recorded in the same 11-month period in 2015.

Broken down, members’ contribution grew to P131.28 billion investments and other income increased to P28.74 billion.

“One of our goals for the pension fund this year is to expand our membership. We would also like to retain the current membership number as it comprises more than 82 percent of our total revenue income,” SSS President Emmanuel F. Dooc said.

Expenditures for the January to November period in 2016, likewise, increased by 18.39 percent to P131.06 billion from the P110.70 billion recorded in 2015 amid the 25.46 percent-increase in disbursements in retirement benefits.

Expenditures for re t i re m e nt , d e at h an d disability stood at P72.56 billion, P36.21 billion and P4.17 billion, respectively.

Disbursements for maternity was re corde d at P4.84 billion; for funeral grant

stood at P3.3 billion; sickness at P2.08 billion; medical services at P12.99 million; and rehabilitation services at P1.48 million.

Expenses in the January to November 2016 period in 2016 pulled the net revenue for the 11-month period in 2016 to drop 21.74 percent to P28.96 billion from the P37 billion in the year before.

To inspect the said theory, theidentified overweight students from Grade 8- Levi Celerio of Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) School Year 2016- 2017 were assessed to support the abovementioned concept. The study uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. It employs

in reconstructing the old curriculum to address the emerging needs of the society. The new curriculum demands teachers to be globally competitive likewise produce graduates who can compete around the globe.

In the K-12 curriculum technology is one of the basic skills to be taught and prepare the students in the world of technology.

With this we will be able to produce graduates that are digitally knowledgeable so that they can compete

in the work place that demands this skill. In the new curriculum teachers are trained to prepare and equip them with the skill so that they will not be logged behind in terms of new developments in education. The application of blended learning approach and e-teaching made the teaching-learning process more effective. The integration of technology in the new curriculum develop the skills in the 21st century that prepares the graduates in the era of digital world.

On the other hand, digital technology lightens the work loads of the teachers.

With e-learning approach it would be very easy for the teachers to use interactive activities that will elicit pupils interest thus in effect better learning takes place.

The use of technology in the K-12 curriculum is indeed very useful and effective. Therefore, teacher should be digitally literate so that they can provide better learning activities thus in effect it will produce globally competitive graduates.

poses great threats to the fragile environment. He said LGUs must be given the right to chart the destiny of their environment. “This bill seeks to do that by including among the areas closed for mining applications those places which have been declared by LGUs as no-mining zones,” Zarate said.

He cited the LGUs in the provinces of Davao, Capiz, Ma r i n d u q u e , Pa l aw a n , Romblon, Negros Occidental, Eastern Samar, and South C o t a b at o h av e p a s s e d ordinances declaring a ban on mining operations or have issued a moratorium on mining applications.

“By s upp or t i ng ou r LGUs through a law that will uphold their power to regulate mining, just like what then Davao City Mayor now President Rodrigo Duterte and the city council did in declaring Davao City a mining-free zone, LGUs all over the country will be more empowered and responsible to their constituents,” said Zarate.

Explicity stated in said ordinance is the prohibition of openpit mining as a means of extracting metallic and nonmetallic deposits from the earth.

“A n e n v i r o n m e n t vulnerable to the effects of mining can no longer support and sustain life existing in it. The catastrophic effects of mining are the conditions that our children and future generations will have to endure – a deadly inheritance abridging the right to life, livelihood, health and security,” Tejada said.

Meanwhile, the committee approved with an amendment HB 4799 which is authored by Rep. Maximo B. Rodriguez Jr. (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City). “Mining has adverse effects both to humans and the environment. Aside from adding toxic chemicals to the ore, it strips-off large areas of top soil of flora and fauna,” said Rodriguez.

The amendment provides that gravel, sand and other non-metallic minerals will be excluded from the coverage of the proposed law.

Rodriguez said Cagayan de Oro City has suffered from flash floods, and mining operations in Barangays Dansolihon, Mambuaya, Taglimao, Tapangi, Tuburan and Tumpago have been blamed for the calamity.

Citing the progress reports of the Region 10 Disaster C oordinating C ouncil (RDCC), which is based in their city, he said for the month of January 2009, the flashfloods affected many persons and families. The flashfloods also damaged 141 houses and partially damaged 1,410 properties, costing about P1.9 million as of January 8, 2009 only.

Meanwhile, a total of 37,086 persons or 7,410 families were affected with 94 houses totally damaged and 71 partially damaged on the January 11, 2009 floods that befell Cagayan de Oro City.

“To prevent flashfloods from recurring, mining operations in Cagayan de Oro City must be totally prohibited. Hence, I urge for the passage of House Bill 4799 which seeks to declare the City of Cagayan de Oro a mining-free zone,” Rodriguez added.

Sarah Rose Salingay, focal person of Social Pension, said that DSWD exceeded its target of 82,765 beneficiaries to be served at the end of the year. “This proves that the department is effectively and efficiently implementing the program that aims to help the poor senior citizens through cash assistance every quarter,” said Salingay.

“However, it’s still our challenge this year for the remaining LGUs to adopt the Transfer of Funds.

That’s why, we will continue lobbying to the LGUs and conduct orientation about the advantage of the said scheme,” she added.

The transfer of funds scheme strategize that the Depar tment downloads the money directly to the LGUs account to fast track the disbursement of money during the schedule payout.

The disbursement process will be the responsibility of the respective LGUs, but the payroll preparation will be done in the region to ensure no alterations of the list and the eligible beneficiaries will receive the pension.

As of this time, there

are 60 LGUs out of 73 had engaged to transfer of funds scheme, thus only 13 LGUs are implementing the direct payment/cash advance mode of payment.

This year, the department targets a total of 100,000 beneficiaries in the region.

It means that more indigent senior citizens aged 60 years old and above will benefit the said program as on the commitment of the new administration.

DSWD Caraga OICRegional Director Mita Chuchi Gupana-Lim said that the DSWD will coordinate with LGUs to submit their waitlist and delist report duly signed by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development, Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs, and Local Chief Executive.
