Briefly PUI dies BUTUAN City – A 24-yearold man who was rushed to the Caraga Regional Hospital (CRH) in Surigao City died after more than an hour of admission and after being categorized as a patient under investigation (PUI) on March 26.

The person was considered PUI because of his recent travel to an area with a positive case of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and also had a cough, Department of HealthCaraga (DOH-13) director Jose Llacuna Jr. told the Philippine News Agency on Friday night.

Before being rushed to the CRH, Llacuna said the patient was first admitted to a private hospital because of his chronic renal failure.

Quarantine centers DAVAO City – In order to decongest the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) here, the city government is preparing five quarantine centers for patients under investigation (PUIs) for the 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Mayor Sara Duterte said the prospective PUI centers are the Malagos Rehab Center, La Vida Inn located in Maa, Alternative Learning School (ALS) beside People’s Park, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) near the Malagos Rehab Center, and the Queensland Hotel, which has offered 240 rooms to the city government.

A big appliance company has also offered container vans that can be converted into medical facilities to accommodate PUIs.

Marawi groceries, food market to open thrice a week only

LIGAN City -- Marawi City's Inter-Agency Task Force on 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has shortened to three days the operation of grocery stores, food outlets, and wet markets as part of its enhanced community quarantine to prevent the spread of the dreaded disease.

Marawi Mayor Majul Gandamra said Thursday that food establishments will only be allowed to open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Gandamra said the task

force decided to impose the limit after observing that residents continue to mill at these places, in violation of the rule on mass gathering.

"What we want here is

to limit the movement of people to contain the virus but they are not following it," the mayor said.

However, he clarified that law enforcers would still allow residents to buy supplies provided that they can justify it.

"We put considerations because we also don't want to curtail the needs of the people such as their food supplies, medical needs or medicines and their treatment or going to the hospital," Gandamra said.

He said establishments such as banks, money transfer, and pharmacies will still be allowed to

operate daily subject to allowed operating hours.

The mayor also clarified that the quarantine pass issued

by the barangay has no expiration date and can be used anytime.

"We don't want to add the burden of the

barangay workers by renewing every now and then the home quarantine pass," Gandamra said.

COTABATO City – A farmer from a remote village in Pikit, North Cotabato has found two “tarsiers” (Tarsius syrichta) and handed them over to environment officials who eventually released the primates back to its natural habitat.

Badjury Mustapha, community environment and natural resources officer (CENRO), said the

two primates were found on March 22 by farmer Nasrudin Angkong, of Barangay Langayen, Pikit, North Cotabato.

Angkong told environment officials that he found the two primates while he was clearing his farm lot.

Having heard about the Department of Environment and Natural Resources campaign

to protect the tarsiers, Angkong immediately alerted village officials of his discovery.

The officials accompanied him in bringing the tarsiers to CENRO in Midsayap which also covers the adjoining towns of Pikit and Aleosan. Since January this year, a total of three tarsiers have been rescued and eventually released in Pikit, North Cotabato.

Early this month, a tarsier was rescued in Pikit and released back to the wild. Forester Datu Daud B. Mangalangkat said the small primates were released back to their natural habitat since they appeared to be in good condition.

Angkong said he hoped that other villagers in Pikit would emulate what he has done to help preserve the environment.

BPI extends public service, relief in the time of COVID-19 T HE Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has stepped up efforts to provide service and relief to Filipinos to ease difficulties brought by the COVID-19 situation, while at the same time ensuring the safety of clients and its employees.

“As a bank, we have to help ensure that the financial system continues to operate efficiently, no matter how trying the circumstances. We have to do our part to minimize the chances that a health crisis becomes an economic crisis. And we have to do this in a way that minimizes the health risks to the people that we have deployed,” said Cezar Consing, BPI President and CEO. Some of the Bank’s initiatives that are currently being rolled out include: 1. Branch network.

Select BPI branches as well as those of its subsidiaries BPI Family Savings Bank and BanKo remain open to attend to clients basic banking needs with all Overthe-counter (OTC) fees temporarily waived. For its skeleton staffing, BPI is providing special food and transportation allowances,

All are subject to certain terms and conditions. Credit card holders also have the option to defer payment for 30 days without incurring late payment charges.

4. Waived fees. Transfer fees to other banks using InstaPay and PESONet are waived, as well as transfer

fees to other BPI accounts using its mobile app for the duration of the enhanced community quarantine period. BPI’s remittance partners also either waived fees or offered discounts for overseas Filipinos: Kookmin (discounted fees until December 31, 2020), i-Remit (waived fees from March 21-22, 2020), and Remitly (waived fees and higher FX rates from March 25 to June 30, 2020).

5. Corporate citizenship. BPI, together with the Ayala Corporation and Globe Telecom, donated PhP 5M to Philippine Red Cross for the procurement and distribution of 50,000 face masks and 2,000 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) to medical front liners who are in critical need of protection in hospitals, local government units, and airports.

boarders, health workers from nearby RITM, who find it virtually impossible to go home. Artists and talents of ABS-CBN staged a virtual musical concert that raised over P270 million for relief purposes.

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is giving Greg O, and others similarly situated, a thirty-day reprieve on his monthly installment payment which falls due on April 1st, at no interest. BPI is granting an even longer reprieve of 90 days for borrowers classified as “front-liners’ in the fight against COVID 19. “Feel free to use this money for your more urgent needs. This is the least we can do for your sacrifices,” BPI President Bong Consing said.

Marina D, who operates a salon at an Ayala Mall, feels relieved that she will not have to pay rent for the duration of the lockdown period. Lino S, a daily-paid construction worker in a project of Makati

Development Corporation, is assured food on his table during his forced layoff. Greg O, Marina D, and Lino S are typical of the beneficiaries of a COVID 19 emergency response package announced by the Ayala group recently.

In a letter to employees, partners, and friends, the brothers Jaime Augusto and Fernando Zobel de Ayala announced a relief package that will benefit thousands of workers because their places of work have been closed.

They include retail workers, construction workers, service providers, security agencies and employees of many similar businesses who are largely on a no-work-no-pay type of employment.

For non-employees (i.e., the extended workforce of Ayala’s partner employers), Ayala is allocating a total of P2.4 Billion as follows: P 600 million – for salary continuance for the displaced workers from construction

sites, shuttered malls and retail spaces of Makati Development Corporation and the Ayala Malls group.

P 270 million - Globe Telecoms’ allocation for its retail store support staff and vendor partners.

P130 million - other Ayala companies’ contribution for personnel-related financial support.

P1.4 billion – for the rental condonation of tenants of Ayala malls during the lockdown period.

For Ayala’s own employees: Acceleration of mid-year bonus, deferment of payables to the Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative and a new special financial assistance program at subsidized rates.

Expectedly, VUCA is here to stay and family businesses must evolve to overcome these dramatic changes!

DBM releases funds for Q2 salaries of gov’t workers

HE Department of Budget and Management (DBM) on Friday said it released the corresponding notices of cash allocation (NCAs) for the second-quarter operating requirements of all national government agencies (NGAs).

In a statement, the DBM said the release of the NCAs ensures

unhampered operation of the national government in the midst of the coronavirus diseases 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, as well as continuous provision of compensation to all government officials, employees and those engaged under contract of services (COS), job orders (JOs), and other similar schemes.

“The said NCAs are ready for

crediting to the respective MDS (modified disbursement system) accounts of agencies on the first working day of April 2020,” it said.

The DBM said also included in the NCAs released are funds to cover the clothing allowance, as well as the midyear bonus (MYB) authorized under Republic Act No. 11466,

or the Salary Standardization Law 5, which shall be released not earlier than 15 May 2020 as provided for by law.

The MYB is equivalent to one-month basic salary and shall be granted to those who have rendered at least four months of satisfactory service and are currently in service.

It further said special

allotment release orders (SAROs) covering the salary differential to implement the first tranche of the compensation adjustment for civilian personnel, as authorized under RA No. 11466 and National Budget Circular No. 579, were also issued to enable agencies to release the salary adjustments effective 1 January 2020. Bank, IMF seek debt BSP to remit P20-B advance World relief for poor countries dividends to fight Covid-19 TO further support the government in its fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will remit P20 billion as advance dividend to the national government (NG).

The advance dividends constitute 87 percent of the estimated total dividends based on the BSP’s unaudited financial statements for the year 2020.

Under its newly amended charter, the BSP

is no longer mandated to remit its dividends to the NG. Section 2 of Republic Act 7653, as amended by R.A. 11211, provides that any and all declared dividends of the BSP in favor of the NG shall be released and disbursed immediately for the payment of the BSP’s increase in capitalization.

Nevertheless, considering this extraordinary time, the Monetary Board has approved to defer the application of the BSP’s

dividends for 2019 to the BSP’s capital and remit PHP20 billion advance/ partial dividends to support the NG’s programs during this enhanced community quarantine due to Covid-19.

In a joint statement on the eve of the G20 virtual summit on Covid-19, the institutions said the global crisis will have “severe economic and social consequences” in International Development Association (IDA) countries.

“IDA countries, [are]

home to a quarter of the world’s population and two-thirds of the world’s population living in extreme poverty,” read the statement.

IDA countries, which are currently 76 in number, had gross national income per capita under USD1,175 in 2020, according to the association's website.

UZUKI Philippines Incorporated recently announced that its parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Japan’s fourth largest automaker, is proudly celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Suzuki, known as a manufacturer of superior-quality motorcycles, automobiles, and outboard motors, started as a loom weaving company called Suzuki Loom Works in 1902 in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. All tests were performed by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

From the 219 PUIs, 122 were under home quarantine while 38 were able to complete the quarantine period.

Out of the 3,817 PUMs, 1,989 are undergoing a 14-day

quarantine while 1,828 have completed the quarantine period. Currently, there are three positive new cases for COVID-19 bringing the total to five confirmed cases captured in Northern Mindanao with one death.

THE BODY SHOP’S COASTAL CLEAN-UP WITH PLANET CORA C

ONSCIOUS of the social and environmental problems the society of today exposes its inhabitants, The Body Shop has been one of the pioneers of sustainability. With that, it constantly seeks for new projects in order to help the world we live in.

In the Philippines, as well as the rest of the world, piles of our mismanaged wastes wind up on our shores. Plastics and other non-biodegradable wastes may be low-cost and convenient but they stay long in our environment and may kill marine animals as they mistaken plastics for food. Single-used plastics such as plastic straws, plastic bottles and plastic bags are big contributors to pollution.

In line with this, The Body Shop Philippines partnered with Planet CORA a non-profit organization dedicated in protecting the planet in gathering almost 200 volunteers for a Coastal Cleanup in Las Piñas, Parañaque Critical Habitat

Joey Mead King, who has always been passionate in beating the alarming rise of plastic pollution, joined the group in this endeavor.

Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA). This cleanup helped in physically reducing wastes as well as creating awareness and inspiration for the volunteers to instill change in their lifestyles.

A total of 2.29 tons of waste were collected in just a span of two hours wherein majority of the collected were plastic bottles.

The Ocean Cleanup with Planet CORA is just one of the many advocacies of The Body Shop Philippines.
