Trade exploratory visit

SOME 50 British companies, mostly with existing operations in the country, are exploring expansion opportunities in Davao, according to British Ambassador Ahsif Ahmad.

Ahmad made this announcement during a dinner for visiting UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy Richard Graham MP. Ahmad said he will lead next week the business delegation to Davao. UK is the latest to join a bandwagon of businessmen visiting the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Davao trip will provide a glimpse of Davao’s potential not only for agriculture investments but also site for BPO operations by some of the British investors in the country. Ahmad cited how British firms have grown in the Philippines from only a few when he came here a few years ago.

Ahmad is due for reassignment mid this year.

ARMM okays P32-M cold storage and fish processing in Tawi-Tawi

and fish processing facility in Tawi-tawi.

PH trades with China to improve economy

A L AY B A L AY City -- President Rodrigo Duterte, in his message during the Ka amu l an Fe sti v a l i n Bukidnon province said China is a neighbor of the Philippines but he wants the country to trade with China to improve the economy of the country.

The president arrived at the Provincial Capitol Grounds in Malaybalay City to grace the annual gathering to showcase the culture and traditions of the different tribes in Bukidnon.

He said that Philippines is friend with America but we are not the vassals of America.

“As Filipino, we will stand on our own,” he said.

During the event, the president acknowledged the presence of Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua. He further asked him that whenever agricultural assistance would arrive, Bukidnon should be the priority.

Establishment of GAD center pushed THE CAGAYAN de Oro City Council committee on women and family relations proposed the establishment of a Gender and Development (GAD) Center in Cagayan de Oro. Councilor Edna Dahino, chair of the committee, said the city has a Women’s Center in Macanhan, but it is only

a small facility.

She said the GAD center, which the city should open, must be able to cater to all women. This is where battered women and others can get counseling, livelihood training and other needs, she explained.

Cebu Pacific net income more than doubles in 2016 C EBU AIR, Inc. said its net income last year surged by 122% annually, propelled by higher passenger, cargo and ancillary revenues.

T h e G o k on g w e i - l e d budget carrier said the group’s net income more than doubled to P9.8-billion net income in 2016, as it flew 19.1 million passengers, up 4.1% from the 18.4 million passengers ferried in 2015.

The operator of Cebu Pacific and Cebgo attributed the higher profit to “strong demand for low-cost air travel and robust growth in ancillary revenues, which include baggage fees, on-board meals and merchandise.”

“2016 was a great year for Cebu Air, as we continue to enable everyJuan to fly to more destinations around the Philippines and to key destinations in Asia, the Middle East, Australia and the United States,” Cebu Pacific Vice- President for Corporate Affairs Paterno S. In 2016, gross revenues rose 12% to P63.78 billion

from P56.62 billion in the prior year. The bulk, 75%, came from passenger services, while 5.8% was from cargo services, and 18.9% from ancillary services.

Cebu Air said its passenger revenues went up 9.2% to P46.6 billion in 2016.

Cargo revenues grew 3% to P3.56 billion last year from P3.46 billion in 2015, while ancillary revenues climbed 3% to P11.74 billion from P10.36 billion previously, the budget airline said in its annual report submitted to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The budget carrier’s number of flights in 2016 went down to 132,056 from

2015’s 132,360 even as the number of its fleet increased to 57 from 55. Cebu Pacific and Cebgo flights seat were 86% full on average last year compared to the preceding year’s 82.6%.

In 2016, Cebu Pacific flew to 36 domestic and 30 international destinations through 102 routes and more than 2,820 flights weekly.

The budget carrier ended 2016 with an operating revenue of P61.9 billion, 9% higher than the P56.62billion operating revenue earned in the previous year.

Schwarzenegger answered very calmly and confidently: “I’m going to be the #1 movie star in Hollywood.” The reporter was shocked and amused at Schwarzenegger’s plan. At that time, it was very hard to imagine how this muscle-bound bodybuilder, who was not a professional actor and who spoke poor English with an Austrian accent, could ever hope to be Hollywood’s #1 movie star!

If our focus is worldly, then we will be overcome with what the world thinks as the worst or the best. But Christians need not worry, for we are assured of GOD’s best.

The important questions we should be asking ourselves are “Do you ask for GOD’s best?”, “Are you seeking GOD’s best?” “What is GOD’s best for you, do you know?”

Because we may be asking for GOD’s best, but we are settling for something less.

GOD has our best interests at heart. We can see this in Jeremiah 29:11 (RSV) “For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” For those of us who still have struggles living in

the Old Covenant, it is easy for us to think that GOD cannot grant us the best of life. Because we rely so much on ourselves to fulfill the 10 Commandments, we expect that if we fail, GOD will punish us. Therefore, we think that GOD will give us the worst. For those of us who are growing in the New Covenant, we know that JESUS CHRIST has already redeemed us of any and all punishments. So we should rest assured of GOD’s best.

For us to truly receive GOD’s best, we only need to seek GOD’s best. But where can we seek GOD’s best?

If we have established ourselves in the identity of CHRIST and we have accepted Him as our savior, then the best is already in us. For JESUS CHRIST is the best of heaven, the best from GOD. Through him, we have access to the best here on earth. By His stripes, we

are assured healing. By His poverty, we are made rich.

By His inheritance of GOD’s kingdom, we are made coheirs. As He is in heaven, so are we on earth.

GOD’s Word holds this true in Romans 8:31. GOD did not spare His only Son. If He can freely give up something so precious to Him, how can He not freely give us all things?

Dinner will not stop political wrangling LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us…” (1 John 1:8, the Holy Bible).

-ooo DINNER BET WEEN R O DY & L E N I W I L L NOT STOP POLITICAL WRANGLING: I am sorry but I doubt if political unity---or, at the very least, a cessation of political hostilities like the filing and counter-filing of impeachment and other charges---could be achieved by a dinner between President Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo.

Yes, Duterte may feel that breaking bread---and sharing food and wine---in private with Robredo and her children, and Duterte’s own children as well, could lead to patching up of their differences, but the reality of politics is such that, at certain levels of political power, it is no longer just the family that controls a politician’s behavior and directions.

What truly controls a politician’s thoughts, speech, and actions---and even appearances---are those that are dictated to him by the forces and benefactors that brought him or her to sensitive and powerful positions. And this would be undeniably true with Robredo, as with Duterte.

-ooo L E N I ’ S PAT C H I N G U P W I T H D U T E RT E WOULD BE CONSIDERED T R E AC H E RY B Y H E R PATRONS: It must not be forgotten that Leni would still be a struggling lawmaker now if the Liberal Party did not push her to become its vice presidential candidate in 2016. If we are to believe Leni’s claims then that she did not have the money and the political machinery needed to win the vice presidency at that time, it would not be unfair to assume that she was prevailed upon to run because the LP assured her of that money and machinery.

Now, having won (even if this is still being contested before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, PET) despite her lack of money, machinery, popularity and despite her being a political novice, Leni surely would feel heavily indebted, and rightly so, to the Liberal Party and its chieftains, and to all others, including apparent supporters from foreign soils, who helped her in more ways than one.

At this point in her career, Leni cannot be expected to just turn her back to these people and groups, and all of a sudden become chummychummy with the man who thwarted the LP’s burning ambition to remain in power even in the aftermath of the failed presidency of one of its beloved leaders. That would not just be the height of ingratitude. It would be considered by her patrons as treachery of the highest order.

Confession heals us interiorly We need to restore the true face of confession whose public image is getting very distorted. This is unfortunate because confession actually plays an indispensable role in a believer’s life. It’s where Christian life is recovered, or at least strengthened.

Of course, confession has to be understood as a doctrine of faith. One misses the truth right at the source if he considers it as just one more practice, religious but mainly social, its nature determined more by its practical aspects than by that it was instituted by Christ and taught and promoted by the Church.

This is actually our main problem these days. Many believers have a watered down attitude toward faith

and religion, and of course toward the Church and the sacraments. They rely more on their reason rather than of faith to lead them in their Christian life. They believe and they follow only when they understand things and see them useful in some way.

Faith is subordinated to our reason.

Again, we have to take our faith seriously and live it as consistently as possible.

We don’t flaunt it when it is politically correct, and junk it when it is inconvenient. And this seriousness in our faith should also be shown in our attitude toward confession.

As a sacrament, confession is not just a human institution.

Though it uses human instruments, it is Christ to whom one approaches

and from whom one asks and obtains forgiveness in confession.

Though it takes only a few minutes, the truth is that the whole drama of Christ assuming our sins, dying to them and rising from them, victorious over sin and death, and expressing the most exquisite version of love in his mercy for us, takes place there.

This is what happens in confession if understood and done well. We need to expand our mind and he ar t to accommo d ate this tremendous reality of confession as taught to us by our Christian faith.

If we today pride ourselves of having gone nuclear, of having covered a vast area of worldly knowledge, then

BSP eyes March ‘17 inflation between 3.0-3.8% H IGHER electricity rates as a result of the 20-day shutdown of Malampaya gas field off Palawan last January 28 to February 16 is seen to push inflation this March to a range between 3.0 to 3.8 percent.

The lower end of the forecast range is the average inflation rate in the first two months this year after the February level rose to 3.3

percent from month-ago’s 2.7 percent.

Tetangco Jr. said weakness of the peso against the US dollar is also seen as an upside risk to the rate of price increases during the month.

countered by lower oil and food prices.

“Moving forward, the BSP will remain watchful of economic and financial developments that could affect the inflation outlook, in line with its commitment to price stability conducive to a balanced and sustainable growth of the economy,” Tetangco added.

Last week, the central b a n k’s p o l i c y - m a k i n g

Monetary Board (MB) cut the BSP’s average inflation forecast for this and next year on account of slower growth of domestic liquidity and lower prices of oil in the international market.

The new forecast for this year is 3.4 percent from 3.5 percent set during the Board’s meeting last February while projection for next year is now at three percent from 3.1 percent. (PNA)

SSS looking to require OFW membership G O V E R N M E N T- RU N Social Security System (SSS) is looking into imposing mandatory protection for Filipinos working abroad in a bid to increase the firm’s membership and coverage.

In a statement e-mailed to reporters over the weekend, the state-controlled pension fund said it wants to require overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to get SSS coverage.

“We are pushing for our OFWs to be covered on a mandatory basis in order to secure their basic safety net in time of contingencies.

Their SSS contribution is essentially a form of longterm savings for the future, especially when they decide to return home and retire,” SSS President and Chief

Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc was quoted as saying in a statement.

Citing latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, there are around 2.4 million OFWs as of end-2016, with only 20% or 500,000 Filipinos being paying members of SSS that amounted to a total of P4.64 billion.

T h e s t at e - r u n f i r m released P779 million worth of benefits to OFWs last year, which included initial and lump sum benefits before retirement, death (funeral with grant) and disability, and short-term benefits for sickness and maternity.

“Our objective is not just to strengthen enforcement of compliance for the coverage

of employers and employees in the private sector, but also to encourage self-employed individuals and voluntary members like OFWs to register and be active in the system,” Mr. Dooc said.

According to the SSS chief, some OFWs are often not included in the social security coverage of their respective countries.

“Even those OFWs c ov e re d by t h e i r h o s t countries may also end up not being entitled to social security benefits, or entitled but with significant re du c t i on i n amou nt s , because they cannot satisfy the long qualifying periods or the strict residency and immigration rules imposed by their schemes there,” Mr.

Dooc said.

SSS raked in P160 billion in total revenues in the first 11 months of 2016, higher from the P147.70 billion it earned in the comparable period in 2015, on the back of an increase in member contributions and in its investment income.

It s tot a l me mb e r c o nt r i b u t i o n s r e a c h e d P131.28 billion in the 11 months ended November 2016, while its investments and other income stood at P28.74 billion during the period.

Its assets stood at P473 billion at end-November 2016 and its liabilities were at P13.54 billion. SSS’ reserves stood at P460.09 billion.

DBP to triple MSME loans ahead of 2020 STATE-RUN Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) is confident it can triple its loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) ahead of its 2020 target, amid its efforts to change its business model.

DBP Executive VicePresident and Chief Development Officer Benel D. Lagua said they may be able to triple their lending activities to small businesses earlier than 2020.

“Originally we said we wanted to triple [MSME loan growth] in five years but I think with the changes that

we’re undergoing, [with] our new president [in DBP]... we will be able to do that earlier,” Mr. Lagua said “What we want[ed] to do in five years earlier, we plan to do it in three years’ time,” he added.

DBP First Vice-President Daniel M. Gonzales last year said the bank targets to triple its present MSME portfolio by 2020, backed by the lender’s annual 25%-30% growth.

By end-2015, the government-run lender recorded a 14% growth in its total MSME loan portfolio to P7.6 billion from the P6.67

A walk through a Soldiers Mind, Heart and Soul

Feb.1 three (3) soldiers died sustaining 75 gunshots each with 25 blow shuttering their bones and flesh. The brutality was the most horrific display of barbaric, inhumane act of terrorism. After visiting the soldiers wake it was the very day and reason the President lifted the unilateral ceasefire and declared the CCP/NPA as terrorists.

When the battalion commander retrieved the body of his soldiers it was so gruesome the pain of losing your men in battle breaks your whole being.

Col. Antonio Bautista is the battalion commander of the 8th IB that I had the privilege to meet.

Last March 21st was the day I visited his battalion and spoke to some of his men. the objective of this article is to write the story of soldiers in active battle everyday. I want to walk through their minds and i want to know how they think and feel and tell their story to you.

A soldiers life is like a shoe. You wear it everyday sometimes their is direction sometimes it makes you walk through an endless vast of

nowhere. You can put it on but you cannot take it off.

You are required to wear it everyday and when you are ordered to run you run. When you are to duct you duct when you are ordered to jump you jump no questions asked you just have to follow orders. I feel every bit of pain i even feel their also afraid, one foot in the grave one second your hit and tom you are gone. You see when i spoke with the Col. he opened my mind to a lot of reality. He said the why do we offer peace to the NPA

these people does not want peace.

This is business and extraction is their way of living. They are being fed and paid by people and until the government will stop being intimidated by giving in to their demands this will be an endless circle of a pointless war and the only people that are at stake are the lives of the soldiers.

They die almost everyday,leaves children fatherless and the wives widowed. This is one of the most important article I have written.

I have understood the oath but i also understand life. I grew up in a military family walking through a life of one would make me believe my uncles stories about war

and their encounters.

The day on my visit the night before i have intercepted a report about the NPA burned DMPI farming equipments.

The insurgency is serious like cancer but our troops have delivered themselves to suppress the enemy. They have placed themselves in the enemy line.

The 8th IB troops are a band of soldiers fighting for our country and the whole AFP. A heart of a soldier is as fearless as a mother

protecting her own kin. As one soldier die another victory to them. But we all need to know and do our part to fight to attain peace. Let us all stop to inhibit their ill intention. Let us not give room for them to conquer. I commend the 8th IB for continuing its operation and securing the land in their perimeters. I would like to thank Lt. Erwin Bugarin for my safety and security and to all the soldiers of the AFP my salute to you.

At a project cost of around US$250 million, the 14,000-kilometer cable system will consist of two fiber pairs with an initial design capacity of 20 terabits per second and will use the latest in submarine fiber-optic technology with 100 gigabits per second transmission equipment per pair. Such additional capacity will cater to the exponential growth of bandwidth between Southeast Asia and the United States.

In a d d it i on t o t h i s initiative, the Globe Business Davao Data Center, which is linked to the SEA-US cable system, will cater to BPOs, financial institutions, Internet service providers and other content providers in southern Philippines. The project, once completed, will address ICT requirements of major trade and industry centers in Mindanao region.

Aside from forming part of the SEA-US consortium, Globe is also a member of an international consortium of telecommunications and t e c h n o l o g y c o mp a n i e s operating the Southeast AsiaJapan Cable (SJC) system.

SJC is an 8,900-kilometer cable system linking seven territories that include Brunei, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines, including the option to link with Thailand.
