TRAIN boosts science THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Mindanao Cluster welcomes the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) saying the law brings to the fore the important of role of science. Dr. Anthony Sales, chair of DOST Mindanao Cluster and DOST-XI regional director, said there is a provision in the law that requires manufacturers of sweetened beverages to have their products analyzed to protect consumers. The regional offices of DOST play a big role in monitoring and surveillance of these products since we maintain and operate the Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories (RSTL), Sales said during the Talakayan sa PIA held at Limketkai Luxe Hotel on March 12. He said it is crucial to monitor the sugar content in beverages and other foods because of its implications on the public’s health.

USTOMS receipts in Northern Mindanao has posted a 38.6 percent during the fourth quarter of 2017 to P3.8 billion as compared to its yearago level but narrowly missed its quarter goal by about P7 million.

Regional economic specialist Cecilio Clark Clarete reported that on an annual basis, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) exceeded its local target of P12.4 billion by 12 percent or P1.5 billion as it raked in P13.9 billion.

The bureau also exceeded its 2017 target of P10.9 billion by 28 percent or P3 billion, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in its quarterly report. tax/PAGE 11 HARD TIMES. Aside from citing various programs and projects for women including the P4 million Women’s Crisis Center to be built in the city, Councilor Edna Dahino stressed that the real change in society should come from one’s self and that women should be the change they want the world to be.
