Bukidnon tremor ILIGAN City – A magnitude 5 earthquake jolted Bukidnon and neighboring provinces midafternoon Thursday, but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it was not expecting damage, although aftershocks are likely. PHIVOLCS said the earthquake occurred at 3:19:59 p.m. with epicenter at the coordinates 08.10°N, 124.56°E, or 19 kilometers southwest of Talakag, which is near its boundary with Iligan City. It was reportedly of tectonic origin at a depth of 1 kilometer. PHIVOLCS said it was felt as Intensity IV in Iligan City, Intensity III in Cagayan de Oro, and Intensity II in Kalilangan, Bukidnon. High employment THE number of employed Filipinos increased in January as most sectors created more jobs on the back of sustained economic growth, the government reported Wednesday. The Labor Force Survey (LFS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that employment rate surged to 94.7 percent in January 2018 from 93.4 percent during the same period last year, equivalent to 41.8 million Filipinos, the highest in all of the previous January rounds of the LFS since 2009. “These improvements in the labor market indicate that more Filipinos are encouraged to join and re-join the labor force, and that more people are being employed. This signals that the economy is responding positively to the economic reforms and programs that the government has been laying down,” said Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia.

AVAO City -- Business executives in Davao City and their counterparts from Hawaii held exploratory talks for possible joint ventures, following the signing of a sisterhood pact between the city and Country of Kaua’i last month, a business leader said. NORTHERN Mindanao posted a higher teenage pregnancy incidence over the national rate. Commission on Population (Popcom) executive director Juan Antonio Perez visited Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesda, evaluating with local civil registrars the results of the National Demographic Health Survey of 2017. (In rural Philippines, local civil registrars double as municipal population officers in their

respective localities.) Based on a day-long consultation last Wednesday, Perez discovered that peer pressure coupled with the prevalence of social media

minus parental guidance were the root causes of the teen pregnancy surge here. In this latest survey commissioned by the alarmed/PAGE 11

A GROUP of residents from barangay Macasandig demanded that the earlier phases of the Japan International Cooperation Agencyfunded dike along Cagayan river must start upstream. According to a petition signed by 800 residents from lower Macasandig led by one Jose Mari Tamayo, the residents are complaining that their properties bore the brunt every time a cyclonespawned flood occurs such as when tropical storm Vinta struck last January.

“Ang ila man nuon gisiguro sa megadike ang tungod man nuon sa City Hall. Wala may gapamuyo sa City Hall, mas importante ang among lugar kay daghan mi gapuyo diri,” Tamayo said in an interview with this writer. “Bintaha na lang tong Vinta kay adlaw so walay fatality.” It was learned that Vinta’s floods followed the same path that Sendong took in 2011, killing hundreds in the city and nearby Iligan. dike/PAGE 11
