Durian export THE Philippines has exported its first frozen durian products from Davao City to Australia, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Thursday.

In a statement, the DTI said the initial shipment arrived at Port of Melbourne on March 2.

Davao durian products were imported

by Aus Asia Produce Pty. Ltd., an importer and distributor of exotic tropical fruits, Asian vegetables, herbs, and other products for the Australian market.

Mentorship program THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) continues to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in rural areas through its mentorship program, the Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME).

Following a ceremonial signing Monday, the DTI mentorship program will also be rolled out in its Rural Agro-enterprise Partnership for Inclusive Development and Growth (RAPID Growth) project, which aims to boost agroenterprise development in the country.

The RAPID-KMME program is a 12-module mentorship program that aims to provide a comprehensive framework in promoting rural enterprises and value chain development.

Railway project in peril due to Chinese demands T Thank you for trusting us!

HE construction of the first phase of the Mindanao railway system project hits another snag as negotiations for a Chinesr loan has yet to be completed, the Department of Transportation (DoTr) announced Friday.

In a press statement, the department said the delay in the negotiation is due to the requirement by the Chinese financing institution that the loan can only be grantet if the railway project is bid out to Chinese contractors.

The project is supposedly to start in the first quarter of this year “Ito ay magsisimu la k ap a g n a - n e got i ate n a po ang loan natin. Then, magkakaroon po ‘yan ng detailed engineering design.

After that, magsisimula na right away ang actual construction (It will start when the loan is negotiated, followed by the detailed

engineering design contract, and then immediately after comes actual construction),” Transportation Assistant Secretar y for Project Implementation-Mindanao Cluster Eymard D. Eje said at an online briefing Wednesday.

Eje acknowledged that the start of the project is delayed.

It pains me to say that we have encountered a delay, he said.

He said the Chinese government has yet to submit its shortlist of bidders for the design-and-build package.

UBOD, Lanao del Norte – The Provincial Peace and Order Council of Lanao del Norte unanimously passed Wednesday a resolution expressing support to the House bill introduced and sponsored

by First District Rep. Mohammad Khalid Quibranza-Dimaporo and supported by Second District Rep. Abdullah Dimakuta Dimaporo.

House Bill No. 8222 seeks to amend Section 13 , Article 16 of Republic Act 11054 or the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to allow the first regular election for the Bangsamoro Parliament to be synchronized with the 2028 elections.

said “the resolution recently approved and passed doesn’t mean we are already part of the BARMM. We are giving our support for the extension of BTA (Bangsamoro Transition Authority) for the sake of peace.”

Lanao del Norte, as a whole, voted against the proposal to include six Moro-dominated towns of the province in the

BARMM. The “yes” vote won in those areas.

The council also adopted a resolution introduced by Mayor Marcos Mamai of Nunungan town asking President Duterte to certify as urgent HB 8222, as the 2022 election is fast approaching.

“We are asking the MILF to surrender their firearms, but truly, if I

am an MILF, I will not surrender my firearms if I have not yet gotten what I was willing to die for,” Rep. Dimaporo said.

“In order for them to surrender their firearms, they must finish their plans on how to get what they want for the Muslim provinces. When they

GENERAL Santos City – The provincial government of Sarangani has rolled out a mobile application commissioned by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the United Nations Development Programme to help monitor government projects in the area.

Gerald Faciol, the

assistant provincial administrator for operations, said Tuesday the application mainly allows residents to give feedback on the status of local infrastructure projects, especially in terms of progress, timeliness, and effectiveness.

Dubbed “Development Live” or DevLIVE, the application was formally launched in the province on Monday.

“DevLIVE is like a citizens’ monitoring. It allows anyone to monitor and report on their local government’s projects related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said in a statement.

The application, which was developed by 98Labs Inc., can be downloaded via Google Play for Android and the App Store for Apple mobile devices.

Faciol lauded the DILG and UNDP for commissioning the development and rollout of the application, citing it will help empower open participation by the people when it comes to the implementation of infrastructure projects.

He said it is a platform for citizens to air their concerns and grievances on the implementation of various projects and are assured that these will reach the attention of the implementing agencies.

SSS releases P1.71-B unemployment benefits of Covid-hit workers

THE Social Security System (SSS) released P31.69 billion in calamity loans to 2.12 million member-borrowers, and P1.71 billion in unemployment insurance benefits (UIB) to 136,000 claimants last year in support of government efforts to mitigate the economic shock of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic on wage earners.

In its report to Finance Secretary and Social Security Commission (SSC) Chairman Carlos Dominguez III, the SSS said it also released P30.47 billion in salary loans to 1.28 million members, and extended pension loans totaling P3.4 billion to 74,799 borrowers in 2020.

The SSS said it saw a marked increase in the number of borrowers under its Calamity Loan Assistance Program (CLAP) after President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of calamity nationwide as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

The UIB claims rose nearly 10 times from 15,000 claimants availing of P178 million in benefits in 2019 to 136,000 beneficiaries claiming a

combined PHP1.71 billion in 2020.

Pension loan releases last year increased by 34.6 percent from the P2.52 billion reported in 2019 because of the enhanced guidelines issued by the SSS, which increased the maximum loanable amount under this program from PHP32,000 to PHP200,000 starting in October 2019.

“From a robust securities placement in 2019, our investible funds for 2020 were shifted to member loans, particularly for calamity loans,” the SSS said in its report.

Loan releases to members increased by more than half from P40.59 billion in 2019 to P62.35 billion last year, but member loan collections from January to November 2020 dropped by 17.6 percent to P32.44 billion amid the implemented moratoriums and the pandemic-induced recession, the SSS said.

Volkswagen PH aims 4 new model launches this year G ERMAN carmaker Volkswagen targets to launch up to four new vehicle models in the Philippines this year even amid the pandemic.

In a virtual media roundtable Friday, Volkswagen Philippines president Felipe Estrella said T-Cross will be the next model that the company will introduce in the local market by the second quarter of 2021.

Volkswagen recently launched the 2021

version of Santana, a subcompact sedan.

Estrella said T-Cross will be the first subcompact sport utility vehicle (SUV) that the German carmaker will introduce here.

T-Cross has 300,000 unit sales across the world in 2020, with sales rising by 45 percent compared to 2019, he added.

He said they have planned to bring in another new model in the Philippines in the

third quarter while they are also working out the fourth introduction by the fourth quarter of this year.

Moreover, Estrella said Volkswagen also targets to bring in its electric vehicle (EV) models in the coming years.

Estrella said two initial EV models from Volkswagen’s ID family were already available in some markets.

In the next three years, the German car manufacturer targets to

roll out six additional EVs, he added.

“Where the Philippines is in this timeline? We at the Volkswagen Philippines, share these aspirations.

While we don’t have specific details yet, we will have it here sooner rather than later,” Estrella said.

DEL MONTE Pacific Ltd. (DMPL) reported a net profit of $30.16 million for its third quarter ending in January 2021, nearly four times the $6.67 million it earned the previous year, as sales grew in all product categories.

“DMPL returned to profitability in [fiscal year] 2021 and is well-positioned in this environment given its nutritious, long shelflife products which enable consumers to prepare meals at home and build their immunity amidst

the pandemic,” DMPL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Joselito D. Campos, Jr. said in a statement on Thursday.

Revenues increased 13.1% to $628.4 million from $555.3 million, as sales in the US, Philippines, and other international markets grew due to the demand for the company’s products.

In the Philippines, sales improved by 19.9% in US dollar terms and 13.8% in peso terms.

Del Monte Philippines,

Inc. (DMPI) expanded its product offerings and dived into e-commerce platforms as most consumers stayed at home amid the health crisis.

The company launched Del Monte Deluxe Gold and Fiesta Fruit Cocktail in smaller cans as its limited edition Christmas products for families hosting smaller celebrations. In January, a more compact version of Del Monte’s tomato sauce also hit the shelves “in an effort to extend its use in everyday dishes.”

“Season-relevant recipes were highlighted vis-àvis meal planning in Del Monte Kitchenomics, the company’s successful longrunning recipe program,” DMPL said.

DMPI also invested in digital marketplaces, pursuing partnerships with online shopping platforms Lazada and Shopee while the country was on lockdown. This resulted in significant growth in e-commerce sales, which remained robust even postlockdown.

Barriers to bonding Think a minute . . . It’s a fact of life and human nature: “Everybody needs somebody.”

For our life to be satisfying and successful, we need close friends. But we face barriers that can hinder, or completely stop, us from bonding with people and enjoying close, meaningful relationships.

The f irst b ar r ier to bonding with others is our painful past. We find it difficult to trust others because we have been deeply hurt by someone before, so we are afraid to open our heart to anyone again. We may not want to get close and share our real feelings with others because in the past we were criticized or even rejected for being open and honest.

So now to protect ourselves from that possible pain, we do not let others know our true feelings and the person we really are inside.

Some of us were fortunate to be born to parents who gave us loving acceptance, affection, and attention, so we learned how to have close, open relationships.

But people who are hurting and wounded from their past often are not free to fully

use of fake news in this era of digital gadgets is a fine example of ‘haste makes waste‘ kind of journalism blunder.

And so, what is fake news in this troubled times?

Simply, the term fake news is wildly used these days of pandemic as an excuse from reality, or simply a display of false pride, arrogance and deceit.

Too wildly indeed because it is being abused to the hilt.

But und erst and ably, there is a lingering confusion when some news is only a bit fake, or fake for an arguably legitimate, or illegitimate reason.

Can we still make a useful definition of fake news? And should we even be worried about it at all?

This could be easily traced down on being impulsive and headstrong.

In fact, fake news is a byproduct of haste and therefore

if haste is at all to be made, it should be made slowly but surely.

In haste, one fails to consider all sides of the problem, issue or concern.

As a Russian proverb goes: hurry is only good for catching flies.

Rapidity therefore does not necessarily lead to something good, or something worth keeping.

Haste interferes with peace of mind. It may be a symptom of emotional nervousness, as in the case of fake news bloggers.

An unbalanced personality, most often than not, refrains the display of haste. Haste in itself, is a sort of morbidity – a disease.

The pretense of haste signifies the absence of sanity and self-control.

In this era of uncertainty where our health hangs on the balance due to the continuing

IGNACIO BUNYE I was a young boy studying at the Itaas Elementar y School in Muntinlupa, when I first heard the concept of “bayanihan”. My social studies teacher used the classic image of neighbors coming together to carry somebody's nipa hut to another patch of farmland to illustrate the idea.

The diversity and challenges of modern Filipino life mean that this image of "bayanihan" may not be as relevant as it once was.

However, the bayanihan spirit is thankfully alive and well. It shows itself in many ways and in many forms, and it has been in full display throughout the COVID-19

pandemic – which is perhaps the most trying period that our country has encountered in this century.

It is with much pleasure that I am able to share with you how, as an independent director of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), I am able to witness the coming together of banks, private companies, the government, and the investing public to help lift up a key player in the Philippine aviation industry.

Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ largest airline in terms of passenger volume has found itself, along with other air carriers, with its back to the wall. Passenger refunds and flight cancellations, coupled with ongoing operational expenses to pay their people and maintain their fleet have resulted in cash flows being on a oneway, outward stream, with very little coming in for over a year.

Prior to the pandemic, this airline was a rare gem in the Philippine airline industry. Catering to “Every Juan”, Cebu Pacific effectively

democratized air travel and helped ordinary Filipinos achieve their travel goals, see the world, and seek their fortunes abroad. It had been highly profitable, posting P9.123 billion in net income back in 2019 – a 132.6% increase from its 2018 numbers.

As aviation continues to be battered by the pandemic, and many analysts believe it will take years before it can recover, we at BPI believe that this is an industry that must be present after the dust of this crisis has settled. We all have an interest in seeing it survive.

Every Juan needs to fly again one day. There are dreams to fulfill, families to reunite, and overseas careers that need to be rebuilt. Even now, our local airlines have been fulfilling the critical task of f lying precious vaccine supplies to cities and provinces around the archipelago – underscoring their importance in a country such as ours.

with the Philippines' largest airline, will help power the industry's wings as it prepares to once again take flight. And we are not alone.

JG Summit, the holding company which Cebu Pacific is a part of, is giving full shareholder suppor t to the airline via issuance of P12.5 billion Convertible Preferred Shares, with BPI Capital acting as Sole Global Arranger, Bookrunner and Underwriter. JG Summit has committed to take-up at the least its pro-rata share in the airline (P8.5b) while allowing the investing public and other institutional investors to root for the airline in the most meaningful way possible.

Furthermore, both foreign and local lenders of Cebu Pacific have offered the airline relief in some form or another, such as allowing the deferral of principal payments. In the domestic space, BPI Capital has led securing vital life lines from domestic banks.

Over the last year, as the pandemic has morphed from terrifying to inconvenient to long-term life-altering event, our coping mechanisms have had to adapt and evolve. Yet there have been differences in the ways we’ve approached time spent in isolation".

For many, including me, positivity has been essential to coping with the crisis – many have relished a chance to slow down and reevaluate, felt grateful to still have a job or kept the good things in perspective (even while balancing virtual schooling,

family safe).

I also caught myself writing columns that sounded as positive as possible in the past weeks. Of course, as Volpe wrote: staying upbeat and expressing gratitude are hardly adverse practices, but this unrelenting optimism – known as ‘toxic positivity’ – paints negative emotions as a failure or weakness. Plus, there are few things more grating than encountering a toxic positivist when you’re grappling with grim reality.

And failing to acknowledge hardships can have a detrimental effect on our mental health. Persistent reminders to reflect on ‘how good we have it’ in the midst of strife and struggle don’t make sadness, fear or anxiety

The Transistioning to the "New Normal" of Learning in Unpredictable Times

The COVID-19 outbreak has compelled many universities to immediately switch to the online delivery of lessons.

Many instructors, however, have found developing effective online lessons in a very short period of time very stressful and difficult.

This study describes how we successfully addressed this crisis by transforming two conventional flipped classes into fully online flipped classes with the help of a cloud-based video conferencing app.

As in a conventional flipped course, in a fully online flipped course students are encouraged to complete online pre-class work. But unlike in the conventional flipped approach, students do not subsequently meet face-to-face in physical classrooms, but rather

online.

During these school closures, all face-to-face lessons were cancelled, compelling many institutions, including our own university, to immediately transition from face-to-face in-person learning to completely online lessons. The abrupt switch to fully online learning has been particularly stressful for many instructors and students who prefer inperson instruction. Online learning is often stigmatized as a weaker option that provides a lower quality education than in-person face-to-face learning.

PRRD joins Normin meeting to end insurgency, brgy dev't program launching CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --President Rodrigo Roa Duterte placed full support in ending insurgency as he personally attended the conduct of Joint National and Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) and launching of the Regional Barangay Development Program at Cagayan de Oro City, March 5.

The said meeting, attended by the region’s local officials and various national agencies, served as an avenue to discuss the most recent accomplishments of the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC) among the local communities in the regional and national levels.

President Duterte expressed his sentiment against the CPP-NPA-NDF who are destroying the families, the community as a whole, including government properties and even the investors who ventured into business in far-flung areas for about 53 years already.

“For fifty-three years, many of your comrades have died and you’ve already forgotten where you buried them. Their bodies might have been

washed out already. And you’ll just say, he left one night and didn’t return,” he said.

With this, he said the government will still welcome those who do not want war, and those who understand what is right and wrong.

Regional launching of Barangay Development Program

Held in the same activity, Region 10 also conducted the Regional Launching of the Barangay Development Program (BDP). With this, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Local Government Marlo L. Iringan, introduced the newest program of the Duterte administration— the Support to Barangay Development Program (SBDP).

He said the program is a manifestation of the government’s appreciation and love for the public especially those from the countryside.

Further, mentioned that the program was created to ensure the realization of the ELCAC priority barangays’ development projects.

For Region 10, there are 119 barangays that will be receiving P20-M funding for their projects, to which USLG Iringan hopes for them to efficiently and effectively implement such projects.

With the approval of the Republic Act 11518, otherwise known as the FY 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA), it puts the ‘Whole-of-Nation’ approach on ending local communist armed conflict at the edge

The Philippines donated vaccines to China in 1939 I recently came across this captioned photograph circa 1939 (uploaded by UP Professor Gerald Lico) which showed that the Philippines, through the Philippine Red Cross, once donated vaccines to China.

The unnamed vaccines were produced in the Serum and Vaccine Laboratory (SVL) in Alabang, which was then operated by University of the Philippines Institute of Hygiene.

The vaccines were turned over by Charles H. Forster, manager of the Philippine Red Cross, and Dr. Felixberto N. Fuentes, head of SVL, to Dr. C. Kuangson Young, Chinese Consul General.

EDA Centrio’s beloved Buffet Breakfast makes its long anticipated comeback on March 15, 2021 for hotel guests and walk-ins.

During a buffet breakfast simulation for tourism industry and media partners held March 11 at the Miso Lobby Lounge, Seda Centrio Hotel Manager Rhett Villaruz stressed

the hotel would be strictly implementing their #SafeatSeda safety protocols in all aspects for the safety of their guests and their service crew alike.

“While we are slowly re-opening our services like your favorite breakfast buffet, keeping you #safeatseda remains our top-priority. Everywhere in the hotel, from the public areas and

guestrooms to back-ofthe-house and delivery areas, safety protocols are in place to help keep you safe whenever you visit,” Mr. Rhett stressed.

Beginning with the time you step into the hotel premises at the first floor foyer, take the elevator up to the 4th floor, and avail of their buffet breakfast either as a hotel guest or walk-in diner, the minimum health standards are strictly enforced for guests and Socially distant seating

Thus, when the socially distanced buffet area is opened, only a minimum of six guests are allowed inside while the rest of the diners are either socially queued outside the area or requested to sit in physically distanced seating in the lobby lounge which will be exclusively for walk-ins only while hotel guests would take their breakfast in the Misto dining area.

Of course, like we personally experienced during this simulation, the menu of Seda Centrio’s Buffet Breakfast remains as superb as ever complete with all those dishes you’ve come to expect from Cagayan de Oro’s leading Lifestyle Hotel. Saludos to Executive Sous Chef Chris Lugtu!
