76th anniversary of MacArthur’s breakout remembered

A TURNING point in the war in the Pacific during World War II is recalled today being the 76th anniversar y of General D o u g l a s M a c A r t h u r ’s successful breakout from Corregidor through the Imperial Japanese Navy blockade.

JICA-funded projects okayed in Mindanao D

AVAO City -- Two hundred fifty-five projects worth P2.44 billion were approved early this month under the Mindanao Sustainable Agrarian and Agriculture Development (MinSAAD), a project of the Department of Agrarian Reform funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Aiza quits MALACAÑANG on Tuesday confirmed that National Youth Commission (NYC) Chairperson Carina “Aiza” Seguerra has resigned from his post.

In a Facebook post, the former youth commission chair said Duterte has already accepted his resignation.

“I met with our dear President last March 5th to tender my resignation as NYC Chairperson. I coordinated with his office because I wanted to personally tell him my reason. 2 DTI-10 launches Kapatid Mentor ME program ONE hundred eighteen (118) mentees from all over Northern Mindanao attended the first regional Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) program launching organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10 on March 7, 2018.

KMME is a 12-week business mentoring program that will equip Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with the right entrepreneurial mindset and basic management skills. It aims to shape MSMEs so they can scale up their businesses, no matter what field, services or products they chose to sell.

The program comprises of trainings on basic accounting, recording, human resource, operation management, among others.

“This is comparable to a Master’s degree. You are not with the academicians, you are going to be mentored by the businessmen themselves,” DTI-10 Regional Director Linda Boniao told the mentees during her opening remarks.

Bus operators want inclusion in new Davao transport system

AVAO City – Two Davao-based bus operators have expressed participation in the city’s High Priority Bus System (HPBS) project, which is now a work in progress with the help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Davao City planning head Ivan Cortez said the bus operators are already operating in Davao City, but begged off to name the operators.

Cortez said the HPBS is a PHP3.6 billion transport project. The feasibility study conducted by a

consultant commissioned

by ADB will be submitted to Department of Transportation (DOTr) by the end of the month.

“Once the FS is submitted to the DOTr, it will have time to package everything but not necessarily taking in 100 percent what the consultant has proposed,” he said. In turn, DOTr will submit the feasibility study to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) by May 2018.

Earlier, Kelly Bird, the ADB country director for

the Philippines, said the design of the project will be completed in 12 to 18 months.

The design includes the bus terminals in five to six locations, bus stops, bus lighting stations and other related infrastructure.

Cortez also said that under the bus system project, the units will be provided by the private operators who will be accredited to be part of the system. A minimum of three operators and a maximum of six can be accredited. He said it is open for international bidding although most of

the time if there will be international bidders they partner with the local bus operators in the bidding.

“The HPBS is funded through a sovereign loan as what the Department of Finance earlier announced,” he said. He said the loan component will cover the infrastructure and social development package.

Cortez was hopeful the target for the proposed HPBS in Davao City will be implemented in 2021 although Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio wants it in the next two years. transport/PAGE 11

Inside our family, we can live separate lives in our own world. Even though we live together, we don’t really know each other and what each of us is feeling and going through. A teenager’s gravestone read: “Couldn’t you see that I was dying?”

Dad and Mom, sometimes we can read the weather signs better than we can read our own kids. Often we don’t know what they’re facing and feeling. We don’t know their fears, hurts, or frustrations.

Are we really listening and

understanding each other?

Or do we just go through the motions every day, but actually close our ears and hearts to them?

Is it because we’re not really interested? Or do we simply not want to know the truth because we’re not sure how to handle it. We don’t want to be confused with the facts! Sometimes we parents choose to put our time and energy into our job and career because it’s easier than really dealing with our kids or our spouse.

But the more we escape from each other and our relationship challenges, the more distant and lonely we become.

Why not start a new relationship with your mate and children? Today, you can start changing. You can start tearing down the walls between you and your loved ones, and start building a new, closer relationship with them. First, we have to let go of old hurts and anger toward each other.

We must choose to forgive them and begin again. We also must stop having such unfair, high expectations of our kids, wife or husband, so they feel that we’ll only love them if they do what start/PAGE 9

Social anxiety is the single most common psychological problem according to innumerable survey results worldwide. The Magnificent, gorgeous and excellent isolation, resulting out of being nervous when meeting people is really the opposite.

The state of being isolated reminds me of being in a hospital with an infectious disease.

Gregory Feist, who focuses on the psychology of creativity at California’s San Jose State University, has defined c r e at i v i t y a s t h i n k i n g or activity with two key elements: originality and usefulness. He has found that personality traits commonly associated with creativity are openness (receptiveness to new thoughts and experiences), self-efficacy (confidence), and autonomy (independence) – which may include “a lack of concern for social norms” and “a preference for being alone”. alone/PAGE 9

Several years ago in one of my write-ups, I wrote about loneliness or in other words: splendid isolation.

Asocial tendencies like these are often far from ideal.

Abundant research shows the harms of social isolation, considered a serious public health problem in countries that have rapidly ageing populations (though talk of a ‘loneliness epidemic’ may be overblown). In the UK, the Royal College of General Practitioners says that loneliness has the same risk level for premature death as diabetes. Strong social connections are important for cognitive functioning, motor function and a smoothly running immune system.

This is especially clear f rom cas es of ext reme social isolation. Examples of people kept in captivity, children kept isolated in abusive orphanages, and prisoners kept in solitary confinement all show how prolonged solitude can lead to hallucinations and other forms of mental instability.

But these are severe and involuntary cases of aloneness. For those of us

EDSA 1986 IS TO BE BLAMED FOR SERENO’S OUSTER WOES: With all the rowdy, gaudy, and often giddy calls for Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Aranal Sereno to already step down from the Supreme Court even if she has not yet been given the chance to defend herself from the accusations against her, she will have nothing else to blame but the socalled EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986, which was the very means by which the president that appointed her to the court was able to ascend to the presidency.

If we will seriously think about it, before EDSA 1986, no ouster of any sort of any leader of this country or of any government agency ever took place unless some kind of a trial has first taken place and the officials concerned given sufficient opportunity ---their day in court, as it were---to at the very least

explain their side of the controversy.

All of these underwent a radical transformation with EDSA 1986. Because of EDSA 1986, an example has been set whereby leaders are kicked out from office merely by noisy protests and mass actions, and no longer through the means provided for law. Replacing top officers of government has become as easy as mounting street demonstrations, and creating mayhem on the roads of the city. Truth is, this kind or style of removing leaders clearly contravenes what the Bible commands.

What are we looking for in life? hints and traces

roy cimagala THIS is a question we need to ask ourselves as early as possible. And, of course, we should try to get the right answer. It’s a question Christ asked the two disciples who followed Christ after John the Baptist referred to Christ

as the Lamb of God. (cfr. Jn 1,35-39) The two disciples simply responded, “Where are you staying?” Their question elicited Christ’s invitation to them to “come and see.”

And when they saw where he stayed and, in fact, stayed with him for a day, their lives changed drastically.

We should be clear about what we are after in this life.

Is it just to spend time and see what is going to happen?

Are we just totally dependent on chance or on luck? Or are we only interested in some fame, wealth, power, pleasure?

We cannot deny the obvious fact that many people

nowadays are not quite clear as to their purpose in life.

And those who seem to have some idea about it, have it wrong, since their idea of purpose is simply time-andearth-bound. There’s hardly anything transcendent about it.

Some may leave a worthwhile legacy beyond their death, but again it is something that can only fade in time. It cannot stand the test of forever!

Like those two disciples, we should always be curious about Christ and follow him.

We should always look for him, for he is “the way, the truth and the life” for us.

We cannot go to the Father

(God), we cannot attain the eternal life proper to us, without him.

That is also why Christ himself said that we seek first the kingdom of God, and not to worry so much about our temporal and worldly needs, because all these will also be provided by him as long as we look for Christ first.

This looking for Christ should be our basic attitude that should guide us daily and give shape to that day. Our life should be characterized by an attitude of looking forward, of watching and expecting, clarifying and pursuing our intentions, and being ever hopeful. life/PAGE 9

Banking&Finance Banks’ real estate loans sustain rise last year

OANS extended by the Philippines’ banking system to the real estate sector continued to increase but share of real estate loans (REL) to bank’s total loan portfolio (TLP), exclusive of interbank loans, went down in the last quarter from end-March 2017.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) data showed that as of end2017 total REL reached P1.8 trillion, higher than the P1.71 trillion in the previous quarter and the P1.6 trillion in end-March last year.

Commercial REL accounted the bulk of the total REL at P1.2 trillion while the residential REL shared the remainder at P608.1 billion.

Also, Real Estate Investment (REI) at the end of last year went up to P276.97 billion, down from quarter-ago’s P295.82 billion but an increase from the P270.47 billion at the end of the first quarter.

Investments in real estate company-issued debt securities reached P174 billion at the end of last year, lower than

the P184.4 billion in the previous quarter but higher than the P162.86 in end-March 2017.

Investments in equity securities in end-December last year reached P102.94 billion, down from P111.4 billion in end-September and the P107.6 billion in endMarch last year.

It terms of RELs’ proportion to TLP, it went down to 20.6 percent in end-December last year from quarter-ago’s 20.72 percent and the 21.04 percent in end-March last year.

Bangko Sentral need not mirror Federal decisions, says Espenilla BANGKO Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. said they do not need to mirror key rate adjustments by the Federal Reserve or other central banks given the intrinsic environment in every economy.

In the Philippines, inflation rate has been rising, with the February 2018 level up at 3.9 percent (based on new base year of 2012) from the previous month’s 3.4 percent.

Based on the previous base year, 2006, inflation rose to 4.5 percent from 4 percent last January.

The latest inflation level using the rebased year is already near the top end of the government’s 2 to 4 percent inflation target for 2017-19 while using the previous base year inflation already exceeded the target range.

Thus, investors and analysts alike forecast the BSP to increase key rates as early as March this year to address any inflationary impact of the faster rate of price increases.

However, Espenilla said they have been telling the public that “yes,

we recognize that the inflation has accelerated but we also said that we analyze the understanding drivers behind the higher inflation.”

“And we think that they (inflation drivers) are transitory. And based on our two-year projection we expect it to come back down. So that’s where we are coming from in terms of the manageability of the situation,” he said.

Philippine monetary officials expect inflation to normalize starting March 2019.

The central bank chief said BSP officials “would take a very different view if, in our view, inflation will accelerate further, let’s say in 2019.”

He, however, pointed out that “that’s not the case right now in so far as the data is concerned.”

“And so that remains a core view of the BSP,” he said, although citing that “nonetheless, as we said, we continue to review the data as it comes along.”

With the continued rise in domestic inflation rate, the BSP is expected to hike rates although not as much

as the expectations for the Federal Reserve to increase key rates by around four times this year.

Espenilla, however, stressed that people should understand that the Fed has a “looser position than where we are” in terms of policy stance vis-a-vis the inflation outlook.

“So why must we follow rate hike one-for-one when we are in different starting point. And our economy is growing much faster,” he said.

The central bank chief said the policy rate driver in the Philippines is the “assessment of the domestic economic conditions.”

This, he said, is “also one reason why, as part of the policy set, we allow exchange rate flexibility.”

He said the BSP is “not married to the idea that the peso is of this value, come hell or high water it must stand at this value.”

“We let it move as part of the policy flexibility that we have built into the economy. And it’s an appropriate response -- the current account is widening, exchange rate

moves and it creates a selfcorrecting mechanism. So that’s part of the policy combination that we consciously chose,” he said.

Asked for this reaction on some analysts who are saying that the BSP is already behind the curve, Espenilla said he thinks that this assessment was “based on the view that you need to raise interest rates.”

He said some economists are saying that the BSP needs to increase key rates because the peso continues to depreciate against the US dollar, among others.

But he stressed that “if you look at the potential of the economy we are at potential right now.”

“There is no evidence, in our view, of overheating so there’s no need to move right away.

We need to balance both the external position, inflation and the growth aspiration of the economy.

So this is the call that central banks need to make jurisdiction by jurisdiction,” he added.

DENR to strictly enforce sewerage connection in Boracay

T

he Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said it will force the local government of Malay, Aklan to strictly enforce local legislation requiring residents and businesses in Boracay Island to be connected to the sewerage system.

“The local government of Malay has enacted Ordinance 307 in 2012, which mandates businesses and residents to connect to the sewerage system of Boracay. The law is there. What we want to see is for it to be strictly enforced,” DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu said.

The ordinance requires residents and businesses within 61 meters from sewerage pipes to connect to the sewerage system.

Those which are located farther from the lines, or

for other reasons cannot connect to the system, are required to build and maintain sewerage treatment plants and septic tanks.

Despite the ordinance, Boracay has been hounded with the issue of untreated waste water being dumped into the drainage system of the island, instead of the sewerage system. This untreated waste water, which contains harmful bacteria and other substances, eventually reaches the open waters in and around Boracay.

“Boracay’s sewage is the number one problem in the island, and it requires urgent action from us. We are giving companies not connected to the sewer lines one month to link up. If they fail to do so, they will face sanctions,” Cimatu said. sewerage/PAGE 9

DENR, UNIDO mark 25 years of partnership against environmental pollution

DA-10 strengthens partnership with LGUs forrabies elimination In line with the observance of the Rabies Awareness Month this March, the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DARFO 10) strengthens its advocacy on responsible pet ownership for the prevention and elimination of rabies.

Anchored on this year’s theme, “Barangay Kaagapay, Laban sa Rabies Tagumpay,” DA partners with the various local government units (LGUs) in the region for its mass vaccination activities against rabies.

N. Bisahan-Baylo, Veterinarian II of the Regional Animal Diagnostic Disease Laboratory (RADDL) of DA-RFO 10, reported that the192,000 doses of rabies vaccines which they received from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) were distributed to the different provinces and cities in the region.

She detailed that through their respective provincial veterinary offices, the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Camiguin

received 38,000 doses, 75,000 doses, 12,000 doses, 30,000 doses and 2,000 doses of rabies vaccines, respectively.

Additionally,the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan received 27,000 doses and 8,000 doses respectively, through their respective city veterinarian offices.

With regards to the rabies incidence rate in region 10, Dr. Baylo stated that it went down to 7.4% as of November 2017 from the 11.6% rating in 2016.

Through this event, the agency urges the public to

become responsible pet ownersby having their pets vaccinated for free through mass vaccinations in their area, by their provincial/ city veterinary offices or municipal agriculture office.

Further, DA hopes that this would intensify the elimination of rabies in the country, in accordance with Republic Act 9482, also known as the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007, as well as help achieve the collective goal of a rabies-free Philippines by 2020. # (AMBManto, DA-RFO10)

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) recently marked 25 years of successful partnership with the implementation of the Safe Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) and E-Waste Management Project.

“For 25 years, UNIDO's assistance in implementing environmental projects which are geared towards improving the living conditions of our communities and curbing the negative effects of environmental pollution has been very significant,” said DENR Undersecretary for Policy, Planning and International Affairs Atty.

The project aims to protect people’s health and the environment through sound management of PCB and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in electronic waste or e-waste.

It includes the management of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in waste electrical and electronic equipment, and PCB-contaminated equipment, PCB waste and stockpile from electronic cooperatives.

Other project components are institutional

strengthening, capacity-building and awareness-raising, and project monitoring and evaluation.

The lead implementing agency for the project is the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

Leones said that UNIDO, together with the World Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has helped the country comply with its commitment to international agreements, such as the Rotterdam Convention and the Stockholm Convention.

“UNIDO in the past 10 years has been very visible in the field of chemicals and waste, open burning, dioxin furan projects and PCB-related projects and now even in electronic waste or e-waste and management of POPs related to e-waste,” Leones said.

He added that UNIDO is currently assisting the Philippines in the preparation of a road map for the chemicals and waste component under the Global Environment Facility.

Malaysian firms keen on joining PH infra program MALAYSIAN companies are keen to participate in the ‘Build, Build, Build’ infrastructure program of the Duterte administration, Malaysian Minister for International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed said Monday.

During the Malaysia Business Forum here, Mustapa said Malaysian firms are seeing the infrastructure development program of the Philippine government as opportunity for them to invest in the country.

“This is a very ambitious program and I’m sure Malaysian companies will be looking for opportunities,” he said.

The Philippine government aims to spend around USD180 billion until 2022 to accelerate development of public infrastructure across the country that will impact the productive capacity of the economy, job generation, business climate, and bring inclusive growth.

Unsolicited proposal submitted for Davao, new Bohol airports

HELSEA Logistics Holdings Corp. (CLC) has submitted to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) an unsolicited PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) proposal to develop the Davao and New Bohol (Panglao) International airports.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange on Friday, CLC reported that the proposal — which was submitted to the DOTr on Feb. 5 — is for a 30-year concession covering the

development, operation, and management of the areas in the two airports that are not within the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines’ control.

“We will modernize both Davao and Panglao international airports into world-class airports without government subsidy by implementing the development in three phases with an estimated total project cost of P67 billion,” CLC President & CEO Chryss Alfonsus Damuy was quoted as saying in a press release.

“However, for economical viability of the project, the succeeding works after the development of Phase 1 shall be subject to the traffic growth requirements and compliance with the minimum performance standards,” he added.

If proposal gains government approval by this year, “improvement of passenger experience and benefit to the community will start next year,” Mr. Damuy said.

CLC is anticipating

Ayala told the Philippine Stock Exchange its net income reached P30.3 billion in 2017 from PHP26.01 billion the previous year.

My kudos to the entire case and crew, for making MTK a major showcase for the resurgence of Sine Bisaya, with its location shoots in many of Cebu’s famous and not so famous spots, technical excellence in production notably Marvene Rom Munda (photography), Antonio Carolos Uypuangco (production design), Insih Rafia Abubakar (wardrobe), Jess a Horca (hair-andmakeup) and Donald Villamero (casting).

But not to forget the singers and composers of the all Bisaya soundtrack which features original and contemporary Bisaya pop and rock songs, most of which were solely writer for the movie.

In fact, if I have any beefs, I thought there were many scenes in MTK which would have been even better if the soundtrack was more pronounced (referencing Claude Lelouch’s A Man and A Woman with Francis Lai’s unforgettable tunes) and that forgotten Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan vehicle You Got Mail.

But that’s just my opinion, and not a very learned one at that…

I am sure many Kagayanons especially those who follow M2 and the Snake Princess on Vines and other social media would just love to see the movie. I can only hope that after its present run there would be other opportunities where the movie can be showcased, p a r t i c u l a r l y i n B i s ay a speaking communities, if only to show to all and sundry that Sine Bisaya is back, and back with a vengeance. In fact, Feist’s research on both artists and scientists shows that one of the most prominent features of creative folks is their lesser interest in socialising.

One reason for this is that such people are likely to spend sustained time alone working on their craft. Plus, Feist says, many artists “are trying to make sense of their internal world and a lot of internal personal experiences that they’re trying to give expression to and meaning to through their art.” Solitude allows for the reflection and observation necessary for that creative process.

A recent vindication of these ideas came from Un i v e r s i t y a t B u f f a l o psychologist Julie Bowker, w h o re s e a rc h e s s o c i a l withdrawal. Social withdrawal usually is categorised into three types: shyness caused by fear or anxiety; avoidance, from a dislike of socialising; and unsociability, from a preference for solitude.

There is gender and cultural variation, of course.

For instance, some research suggests that unsociable children in China have more interpersonal and academic problems than unsociable kids in the West. Bowker says that these differences are narrowing as the world becomes more globalized.

Still, it turns out that solitude is important for more than creativity. Since ancient times, meanwhile, people have been aware of a link between isolation and mental focus. After all, cultures with traditions of religious hermits believe that solitude is important for enlightenment.

Recent research has given us a better understanding

of why. One benefit of unsociability is the brain’s state of active mental rest, which goes hand-in-hand with the stillness of being alone. When another person is present, your brain can’t help but pay some attention. This can be a positive distraction.

But it’s still a distraction.

D aydre aming in t he absence of such distractions activates the brain’s defaultmode network. Among other functions, this network helps to consolidate memor y and understand others’ emotions. Giving free rein to a wandering mind not only helps with focus in the long term but strengthens your sense of both yourself and others. Paradoxically, therefore, periods of solitude actually help when it comes time to socialise once more.

And the occasional absence of focus ultimately helps concentration in the long run.

L learned, if your personality tends toward un-sociability, you shouldn’t feel the need to change. Of course, that comes with caveats. But as long as you have regular social contact, you are choosing solitude rather than being forced into it, you have at least a few good friends and your solitude is good for your well-being or productivity, there’s no point agonizing over how to fit a square personality into a round hole.

We s h o u l d t r y o u r best to shun being simply casual or cavalier about this responsibility. We can easily play around with it, since intentions are almost invariably hidden from public knowledge. We are urged to be most sincere in directing our intentions properly.

We can easily fall into hypocrisy and deception, doing what can appear good externally but is not internally, since we could refuse giving glory to God, which is the proper intention to have, and instead feed and stir our vanity, pride, greed, lust, etc.

We need to actively purify our intentions, since we have to contend with many spoilers in this regard these days. In fact, we just have to look around and see how openly opposed many people are of directing their intentions to God. To t hem, intent ions are strictly personal and confidential matters that others do not have any right to meddle. While there is a certain truth to this claim, we have to remind ourselves that our intentions too are subject to God’s moral law for us.

Our intentions can only have at their core the love of God, the giving of glory to God. As St. Paul once indicated, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10,31)

According to Boracay Island Water Corp., one of the two water concessionaires in Boracay and the operator of the island’s sewerage infrastructure, 195 of its 578 business customers are not connected to the sewer lines.

Meanwhile, only 5 percent of their 4,331 residential customers are connected to the sewers.

Customers of the other water provider, Boracay Tubi System Inc., are not connected to the sewer lines, but the company offers to siphon waste water from them into the company’s sewerage treatment plant.

“Companies release a huge volume of waste water, so it is important for us to crack down on them. And

we do not know if these 195 establishments are causing problems with the island’s drainage system,” Cimatu said.

Jubilee last year of this little known vignette of the War in the Pacific, the Cagayan de Oro City Historical and Cultural Commission led a week-long celebration of events which included a reenactment of the General’s arrival at Macabalan and convoy to Tankulan, wreath laying at the MacArthur Marker in Del Monte (site of the airfield where the B-17s which carried him to Australia took off), Mangima Heroes’ Shrine and the Japanese General Yoshitoi’s grave stone marker, awarding of medals to sur viving WWII veterans, and lunch at historic Del Monte Lodge where MacArthur stayed during his layover.

A m o n g t h e w e e k ’s highlights was the free public screening of the World War II Documentary “Unsurrendered 2: The Hunters ROTC Guerrillas” a documentary which tells the story of the forgotten Filipino Guerrillas that fought against the Japanese during WWII and “VALOR: The Story of Col. Emmanuel Ocampo”.

Written by Kagay-anon Bani Logroño, the films were screened for free at all Centrio Cinemas from March 14-17 for high school students and armed forces veterans courtesy of Centrio Ayala Mall Cinemas, Philippine Veterans Bank, Seda Centrio and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines-Cagayan de Oro Chapter.

Also featured were a series of lectures held at the Centrio Mall Activity Center and Liceo de Cagayan University Library by Virginia Hansen Holmes, who lectured on her personal experience in Mindanao during WWII where her father and brothers fought against the Japanese occupiers as guerrillas, as retold in her memoirs, and Marie Vallejo, also the daughter of a Filipino guerrilla who discussed how veterans and their families could avail of benefits under US laws.

Not the least, the 75th Jubilee as also highlighted by two exhibits of World War II relics and memorabilia related to MacArthur.

by the visit of a delegation from Cagayan de Oro’s sister city of Norfolk, Virginia, where the remains of Gen. MacArthur and his wife Jean, are found at the MacArthur Museum.

The group was led by Dr. Juan Montero II, the main mover of the Cagayan de Oro-Norfolk Sisterhood, and Jennifer Priest, executive director of the Norfolk Sister City Association.

P r e s i d e n t i a l Ta s k Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) Executive Director Undersecretary Joel Egco said on Monday that a witness had pointed Mahilum as the gunman in the killing of Lozada, a hard-hitting commentator of Prime Broadcasting Network in Bislig on October 24 last year.

Egco said the witness positively identified the suspect on February 25 when the latter was going through photos of Lozada on a laptop of the slain broadcaster’s staffer.

But Navarro, who denied any hand in the killing, said he did not personally know Mahilum since he just called him during emergencies whenever there are request from residents for a driver of the ambulance or utility vans assigned at the City General Services Office.

“We hired him when the ambulance driver resigned after the election since we did not find any criminal record from Rolly,”the mayor said.Ï would say he is a soft-spoken good man and I doubt if he could even handle a gun.”

Navarro said Mahilum is still actively working at the City Hall after he took a week-long leave of absence on November 7 last year after having relationship problems with his wife.

Egco said PTFoMS could not yet hold Navarro accountable to Lozada’s death since the witness just tagged Mahilum as suspect.

He said PTFoMS would file appropriate charges against Mahilum.

Lozada, 29, was killed while he was on his way home with his girlfriend, Honey Faith Toyco, who survived the attack.

Shortly before he was killed, Lozada posted on Facebook that he had been receiving death threats.

Egco said that on November 7, 2017, the PTFOMS “coordinated the implementation of two search warrants” at the residences of Mahilum and a certain Felixberto Villocino Jr., who was tagged as an alleged accomplice of Mahilum.

In the modernized public transport, the buses plying the routes will have an electronic digital system where the routes are displayed with wifi and can accommodate passengers of about 50 to 100 depending on the kind of bus.

He said the entire road network of the city will be covered by the system with buses passing through 29 routes from the current 1,032 routes of the jeepneys.
