Briefly Samal-Davao bridge SAMAL ISLAND, Davao del Norte – As the long-awaited P23-billion Samal-Davao bridge project breaks ground in July this year, an official confirmed on Saturday that its construction will commence in the middle of 2021. In an interview on Saturday, Mayor Al David Uy said the plan to construct the bridge will be slated next year as the detailed engineering design of the project has been worked out. “It will be in the middle of 2021. The Consul General of China told me that the funds are there already and everything has been prepared,” he said.
Ocean rehab A HIGH school teacher in Bugo National High School (BNHS) in Cagayan de Oro City is leading the campaign to rehabilitate the ocean through research on artificial coral reefs with the use of glass bottles. Maria Theresa Flora Mabalos said Friday she got the inspiration for her research in 2016 when she was teaching in Macabalan National High School (MNHS), where she collaborated with students to establish community-based projects. "The creation of artificial reefs came to our mind after I had gathered the student leaders for planning and brainstorming on sustainable school-community based projects," saying the concept for artificial reefs using glass bottles naturally came up because the school is situated in a coastal area facing Macajalar Bay.

HE people of Northern Mindanao especially those belonging to the marginalized sector will soon have access to free legal assistance from the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ and the local government of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City in partnership with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) – Misamis Oriental Chapter and Liceo de Cagayan University – College of Law signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the relaunch Justice Action Center – DOJAC Region X today, 06 March 2020. I have been always the most silent pupil in elementary and high school. I was ashamed even to talk to or with my teachers. Several terrible school records have been the result. But, I wanted to become a journalist. I am still one. And, I was teaching 12 years at an university. I will be teaching again German language soon at Ateneo de Davao. During college times and while writing my first articles, I learned from my first boss, a daily news publisher, to avoid being ner vous w hi le me et ing people. I was always prepared. Preparation for any communicating
situation is a must. I have been invited to many parties and gatherings. I always asked for the guest list. I scanned all newspapers and browsed in the net. "In your opinion, who..." or "What do you think of....?" kept the momentum going. That was sometime during the 1960's. Since that time I was just very lucky to meet always the right people at the right time and place, which kept on teaching me how to avoid splendid isolation. Whether you're delivering a speech, approaching your boss, or joining an important social occasion, do at first your homework. The most polished, smoothly delivered and sp ontaneous s oundings talks are the result of many hours of work and years l on g e x p e r i e n c e s . The global number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 has surpassed 100,000 and the death toll is close to 4,000. Prof Hsu was one of four esteemed panellists who spoke to The Straits Times' senior health correspondent Salma Khalik in an hourlong dis cussion, which was broadcast live on the newspaper's social media channels. The ot her t hree are Associate Professor Kenneth Mak, director of medical services at the Ministry of Health (MOH); Professor Leo Yee Sin, executive director of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases; and Professor Tikki Pangestu,
a visiting professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and former d i re c t or of t h e Wor l d He a l t h O r g a n i z at i o n ' s (WHO) research policy and cooperation department. Prof Pangestu outlined three possible scenarios the world is facing: *One, more countries will have outbreaks, including severe cases, and it would continue to be an emergency. *Two, the virus might "disappear completely", similar to how SARS did, said Prof Pangestu, referring to the 2003 outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome that claimed almost 800 lives globally.

Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one's own competence, accomplishments or capabilities. In modern usage, it is also referred to as "pride that blinds" because
it often causes the person to act in foolish ways that belie common sense. In the world of family business governance where conflict is inherently part of the ecosystem, flawed behaviors and past hurts by the leaders and their offspring, when left unchecked, almost always mutates into some form of power struggle and generational conflict. During the recent hearing on the House Committee on Poverty Alleviation, the Mindanao party-list solon representing electric cooperatives is pushing for the proposed House Bill 6060, expanding the Pantawid program (4Ps) implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. This House Bill aims to improve the living conditions of the 4Ps Households and to accelerate the growth of small-scale industries or businesses by making electricity accessible even to the poorest Filipinos, Ebcas said. He said 4Ps has helped countless Filipinos nationwide and has improved the plight of dropping literacy, health condition, and livelihood of many
households. The increased suitability of industries in the Philippines paves way to the importance of access to electricity to foster rural development. Ebcas seeks for the approval of this proposed House Bill expanding the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program for increased access to electricity, facilitating improvement of living conditions and development of rural areas. It is our hope that this technological progress will be shared to all Filipinos, and it is through accessible electricity that this will be possible, he said. Also present in the House Committee were fellow Power Bloc Representatives from APEC Partlylist and Recoboda Partylist, who also expressed their support and interests for the welfare of the electric cooperatives and its consumers.

We must adapt this technique, benefit from the communication infrastructure and activate all e-learning means. Students must trust their abilities in the selflearning process and take advantage of the time w h i l e n ot n e g l e c t i n g the importance of the educational environment. Remote e-learning is not limited to lessons taught by the teachers through platforms. Students can take part in several activities that can enrich
their learning experience in addition to simultaneous virtual lessons attended by students and teachers at the same time because there are other lessons that students can watch, pause and watch again at any time. The new technique also features activities that allow students to interact in the presence of their teacher or even in his/her absence. Such activities aim to promote students’ understanding of a certain c o n c e p t a n d p r ov i d e them with opportunity to discuss and benefit from each other. The remote e-learning platforms present various tools to measure and evaluate the extent to which students are understanding the lessons.

Livelihood store for leukemia patients adopted and rises at RTC 10 A

LIVELIHOOD store patterned as an "honesty store" now rises at the premises of the police Regional Teaining Center (RTC) located at 6th Division, Patag, National Highway in Cagayan de Oro City where beneficiaries are leukemia patients from a group called LEUPAPO or Leukemia Patients Parents Organization; a non-profit organization whose mission is to facilitate leukemia patients that require medical treatments,shelter and food, said RTC 10 spokesperson Jeanette Marie S. Soldevilla. The said organized group was founded by Regzel Clarabal whose son also suffered leukemia. At present, there are 120 leukemia patients sheltered by LEUPAPO free of charge out of empathy and kindness,helping patients avail medical treatments such as chemotherapy and blood transfusion.Patients are coming from different areas in Mindanao who cannot afford medical trestment,Soldevilla said.
LEUPAPO's struggle pierced in the heart of the newly installed RTC 10 regional training director P/Lt Col. Edison Revita after he personally went to LEUPAPO temporary shelter in barangay Bulua and seeing the situation of the patients. That instantly enkindled his heart.Having seen the living condition of the patients,he immediately donated reconditioned bunks,mattresses and beddings. It all started from a simple request of the founder for a blood donor to Revita and from then on,RTC-10 championed the cause of LEUPAPO. The group's daily struggle is on how to sustain the basic needs of the patients of providing food on the table and medical treatments. To address this need, Revita thought of giving sustainable help by giving LEUPAPO an initial capital for livelihood and that's when the "honesty store" was born wherein they now provide healthy snacks to the police recruits and police students of around over 600 like sweet
yams,corns,bananas,camote cue and kakanin. The concept behind Honesty Store is to sell products provided by the parents of leukemia patients under LEUPAPO on display inside the store with no vendors or store keeper around.The customers,which are those police recruits/students and RTC-10 staff will be buying their food stuff from the store and just leave the amount they have to pay out of their purchase and

that's how "honesty store" derives from. Aside from earning,LEUPAPO gets a percentage of the "honesty store"'s net income.This empoweres them to be selfsufficient. It affords them their daily provisions. According to Revita that RTC 10 has not only helped in improving the living condition of LEUPAPO members but most importantly, managed to capacitate the parents to earn their living and not to rely with assistance and relief. Apart from the livelihood assistance, LEUPAPO benefits the most from the blood cards of the police recruits and career courses drawn from blood letting activities patients with leukemia that require blood transfusion from time to time during their care.Blood transfusion is one of the most important form of supportive care for patients with leukemia.Getting blood from the blood bank and lack of blood donors is a constant source of frustration and woes for LEUPAPO but with RTC 10's assistance, it is no longer a burden to them

This teaches the students to be compassionate, to look out for other people and help them.This brings joy to the heart of each patient.They wait with anticipation the visits and lessons during weekends giving them a ray of sunshine. As a tradition, RTC 10 conducts outreach program every December. This is to instill the value of social responsibility to the students,of looking out to other people and share. The most significant event for LEUPAPO is that it gained the attention of the local community as well as other government bureaus and nongovernment organizations (NGO).It also gained the attention from the local politicians as well as the local media. In fact, Revita is nominated for Mindanao Daily and Veterans Bank's 2020 Search for Outstanding Mindanaoans for Excellence in Governance and Leadership Awards which awards night and culminating program is on April 23 this year at Ayala Malls Centrio because of his contribution in adopting the lives of LEUPAPO leukemia patients. But for Revita, the acknowledgement such as this award is to showcase the living condition of Leukemia patients that needs care and help and still very part of the society. It also highlights how a crowd can and will fall behind an authority figure even through stupid actions. It takes an innocent child who is outside the social norms to point out what everyone can see. For individuals afflicted with hubris, there is a Confirmation Bias: He or she is above everybody else and adjusts his or her reality to confirm this bias. And there’s more, for them it is some form of Defense Mechanism: When there are some bad decisions made, they deny their mistakes and stubbornly refuses to admit them. In the workplace, few people are willing to risk the wrath of the leader by
telling him or her that they are arrogant. As a result, this form of collective apathy can leave the owner blind to the harsh realities of what’s going on in the business and the competitive environment. And all too frequently, the task of telling them that they are wrong falls to an outside adviser. A consultant’s role is not only to question the status quo but to articulate and embed the values that governance brings to the enterprise. Every good advisor worth his salt must stand his ground against arrogant owners and get “paid to disagree with the founders and next generation leaders.” So, my advice to colleagues is this: if you want to get the desired results without compromising your values, be “ready to walk away” when the bloated ego manifests an erratic, irrational selfcentered behavior. TCube – family-friendly 5-in-1 shop – opens at uptown CDO A

TTENTION residents of uptown Cagayan de Oro, there’s a new fivein-one shop that has just opened near you. TCube – located at Block 4 Lot 5, Paseo de
Oro Drive, Pueblo Business Park – consists of a coffee shop, a nail spa, a car wash, a laundry shop and a videoke bar. The letter T of its name is derived from the name of the owner. And since it offers five
services, thus TCube. The coffee shop with videoke – called Velvet Café – offers latte, frappes, smoothies, snacks and an all-day breakfast. That is located on the first level of the two-storey building. On the second floor, you will find the videoke with
one big room fitting 20 persons and two small rooms for ten persons. Velvet Café’s videoke bar is family-friendly. It doesn’t offer any liquor-based beverages. The nail spa also at the ground level is called Nail Luxe. It offers hand and foot care, manicure, pedicure, hand and foot paraffin, foot spa, gel polish and nail polish. The Laundry Lounge adjacent to it offers selfservice laundry and dropoff laundry. And next door is Drip ‘n Dry car wash. All in all, TCube is tailored for residents of uptown Cagayan de Oro and nearby places so they won’t have the hassle to going downtown. After all, the five services that
they’re offering are basic necessities. On top of that, the view at the second level of TCube is so awesome especially during sunset. Velvet Café is open Mondays to Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. extending its closing hours on Fridays at 11:00 p.m. On Saturdays and
Sundays, it opens earlier at 7:00 a.m. catering to joggers in the area, offering champorado, arroz caldo and kakanin. The Laundry Lounge opens from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Nail Luxe opens from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The car wash opens from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. only.
