Briefly Rice achievers BUTUAN City -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) continues to achieve its goal to attain and sustain rice self-sufficiency within the current administration until 2016 and beyond.

The goal will not be made possible without the support of the Agriculture Extension Workers (AEW), Local Farmer Technicians (LFT), and Local Government Units (LGUs) in implementing programs for the farmers on the field specifically in improving rice production.

With this, DA-13 recognizes nine AEWs, two LFTs, and the local government unit of Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur as the national awardees for the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers Awards (APRAA) 2014 representing Caraga region.

Mindanao’s banana industry poised as main source of banana export

T

HE robust banana industry in Mindanao is poised to gain from the opening of Japanese markets to a new type of packaged Philippine banana fruits from the newly introduced Fusarium wilt-resistant Cavendish banana variety, the Department of Agriculture said in a statement.

DA said that according to Dr. Agustin B. Molina of Bioversity International-Asia and the Pacific Office, “With optimization of harvesting time and ripening protocol, innovative 4−5 fingers cluster packaging and improved branding, the new banana variety has gained acceptance in Japan.”

Known to breeders as GCTCV-219 (for Giant Cavendish Tissue-Culture Variant), the new variety is resistant to Fusarium wilt (also called Panama disease) Tropical Race 4, and could thus be a potential alternative

for the commercial Cavendish variety, which is susceptible to the destructive banana disease.

But for the new variety to be accepted in the Japanese market, some innovations had to be made.

According to Dr. Molina, the Japanese market requires full-hand packaging for which bananas must have compact and uniformly-cur ved fingers, the characteristics of the commercial Cavendish variety.

Ford Philippines’ sales rise 38% in February FORD MOTOR Company Philippines plans to expand its local dealership network to 40 locations this year after sales rose by an annual 38%

in February, the automaker said on Friday.

In a statement, Ford said it sold 1,759 units last month, led by the EcoSport,

Ranger, Explorer and Fiesta nameplates.

Bulk of the sales came from its pickup truck Ranger at 725 units, up 12% year

on year.

Ford sold 652 units of its new model EcoSport, which was launched in the Philippines in April last year.

Ford’s Fiesta notched sales of 160 units in Februar y, “as customers continue to appreciate the

hig h-p er for mance 1.0L EcoBoost engine,” it said in the statement.

Ford said that its SUV line-up also contributed to the strong Febr uar y performance, with t h e pre m iu m E x pl ore r delivering sales of 99 units.

On the back of

encouraging retail sales results, Ford said it plans to continue the expansion of its nationwide dealer network to 40 locations this year from the current 36.

New dealership openings are planned for Malolos, Bulacan; Sta. Rosa, Laguna; Ormoc, Leyte; and Palawan.

“The Japanese (company) will launch these frozen fruits on March 26, they even invited actors for the launch,” D’ Farmer’s Market owner Candelario Miculob told reporters during a plant visit.

The SME offers chilled f r u it s s u c h a s du r i a n , p ap ay a , mango, gu ava, pineapple and bananas.

Miculob established the SME in 1992 after acquiring 14.3-hectares of farmland in Calinan, Davao City.

Miculob said the Japanese company orders the allnatural fruits, following

its country’s standards, to serve with smoothies.

Other companies from Korea and Hong Kong were also keen on purchasing the frozen fruits, but the D av a o SM E c ou l d n ot accommodate more orders due to its lack of cold storage facilities.

Miculob said his business could not even deliver the entire requirement of its Japanese client.

“To fully supply Japan, we need to deliver goods every three days,” he said.

In a statement, the PSE said it will hold its second “Philippine Capital Markets Investment Conference” at the Uptown Place in Iloilo City on March 24. This follows the inaugural forum held in Cebu in May last year.

SHAREHOLDERS of Del Monte Pacific Ltd. (DMPL) swamped the company’s share sale, allowing the dual-listed fruit canner to raise P6.8 billion from a stock rights issue in the Philippines and in Singapore.

DMPL told the stock exchange on Friday it sold 641.94 million rights shares as planned, at P10.60 apiece.

Shareholders had wanted to subscribe to as much as 720.65 million rights shares, DMPL said in a disclosure.

The offer closed on March 2. The rights shares are expected to be issued on March 10 and listed on the Singapore Exchange and the Philippine Stock Exchange

on March 11.

The net proceeds will be purely allotted to the repayment of the bridging f a c i l it y of up t o $ 1 6 5 million from the Bank of the Philippine Islands that the company obtained to partially fund the takeover of the consumer food business of Del Monte Foods Corp.

DMPL -- which is not affiliated with other Del Monte companies worldwide -- holds the rights to the Del Monte brand in the Philippines, in the Indian subcontinent and in Myanmar. The fruit canner is controlled by the Campos family’s NutriAsia Pacific Ltd.

The Good-For-Nothing

hink a minute…Guiseppe’s Papa came from a family of fishermen. In fact, for 300 years the men in his family had been fishermen in the country of Sicily. His Papa eventually moved to San Francisco where he continued their fishing business. Eventually they had 9 children. All the boys from the time they could walk helped Papa on his fishing boat. All the sons, except Guiseppe!

Guiseppe simply could not go because he got so terribly seasick. His stomach just could not take the motion of the boat, or the strong smell of fish. But even when his dad saw how sick Guiseppe got on the boat, he did not accept it. He always told his son Guiseppe that he was good-for-nothing.

Guiseppe was very hurt by his father always criticizing and putting him down. But he still tried his best to help his family in some way. So as a young boy he went out on the streets and worked every job he could find to bring money back to his father. But instead of his Papa being proud of his hard-working son, he kept telling Guiseppe he was lazy and good-for-nothing. Finally, Guiseppe just gave up on ever pleasing his dad.

He got involved in sports and discovered that he was a very talented, natural athlete, especially in baseball. In fact, he became the most successful son in his whole family. That young boy whom his Papa

Making ATM safe from theft?

T

he House Committee on Banks and Financial Intermediaries has received a proposal dubbed “The ATM Theft Insurance Act of 2014.”

Sounds like a a sound measure because alarming incidents such as the socalled card-skimming have stolen hundreds of millions of pesos from bank customers by syndicates who managed to duplicate cards and acquire personal ident if icat ion numb ers (PIN) of unsuspecting ATM cardholders.

The measure titled HB 5036 is “An Act mandating all banking institutions to offer Automated Teller Machine Theft (ATM) Insurance to all clients, prohibiting fraudulent claims relative thereto, providing penalties and for other purposes.”

This would relie ved customers of worrying if their

money are withdrawn without their knowledge through card-skimming. They are just like victims of hold-ups but with the measure, they will not endanger their personal safety.

The increasing number of incidents of card holders being brought to nearby ATM and forced to withdraw money at gunpoint are cases in point.

What is more sad is the fact that most victims are employees whose hard earned salaries are deposited by their employers to their individual ATM accounts or students who are away from their families and receive their allowances or tuition fees through ATMs. Congressman Roman

Romulo, the proponent of the measure noted that the banking industry, among others, has taken advantage of modern technology in order to offer their services in a more convenient and simplified manner. However, technology has also paved the way for the proliferation of illegal mechanisms or devices that allow access to data that puts bank customers’ account at risk.

He also pointed out that, without a related law, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) could only leave the matter to the discretion of the individual banking institutions whether to refund the victims of ATM fraud.

The European Central Bank is beginning a trillioneuro program to stimulate growth and ward off deflation.

The bank will start printing some 60 billion Euro each month, using it to buy up private, and sovereign bonds.

Meanwhile the Euro remains on an all day low since years.

The landmark economic stimulus plan for the European Central Bank (ECB) to buy sovereign bonds from Euro zone countries, agreed upon in January, officially began on today (Monday) while writing this piece.

The ECB’s quantitative easing program is beginning as the Fed’s has wound down.

Student Engagement in Classroom Interaction

In schools, most students think that excelling in quizzes, examination and similar stuff is enough to make grades. However, t e a c h e r s p r e f e r t h at being engaged in school d is c uss i ons , not just listening or obser ving alone, is best way to make learning effective not just for a particular number of students but for the entire class.

Student participation in a classroom interaction boils the whole class. It means that it awakens everyone, not just those who literally sleep but also to students whose minds are in opposite direction. This is in terms of not engaging because they are too shy, they are sleepy, they are not interested in participating inside the classroom and instead let his classmates do it, and they are thinking something not related to the subject.

Thus, teachers play the major role in increasing student engagement.

In an article published online, it said that one way to increase student engagement during class discussions is to create an emotionally safe environment. It encourage respectful exchange of ideas where students can express their thoughts without fear.

This also allow them to explore, debate, problemsolve and practice sans anyone judging him.

It is also encouraged that classrooms should be safe in intellectual aspect.

Teachers could do this through starting her class with activities that requires everyone to participate.

Thus, each of them will feel confident.

Seeing everyone standing up to answer a teacher’s question or listening to a student explaining his stand on a debate is a circle that develops into a loop. It open minds of other students and encourage them to tell the piece they want to share as well.

Introducing real responsibilities to students thru Student Leadership

Encouraging students to be student leaders is also training them in taking responsibilities and duties in real life responsibly. The learnings acquired from here is very much useful especially on performing assignments in their future career.

In schools, existing are different organizations and clubs by which students are free to be a member or an officer of. It could be the student body, English Club, school paper organization, Glee Club, theatre group and several others. These groups usually do eventorganizing and activities which the entire student and school community could benefit from.

Student Leadership educates students not just in academics but also in various aspects such team management, tasks delegation, timemanagement, eventorganizing, multi-tasking, organizational planning and the like.

It also enhances a student’s communication skills because a leader is required to speak with confidence and poise to diverse groups such as conducting discussions about their organization’s vision, mission and strategic goals, speaking on school e vents and or ient ing

freshmen about the school’s rules and regulations. In here, his diplomacy skills and persuasion tactics are improved. His skills and values are nurtured as well.

In leading, a student also learn to be self-less and self-reliant. He will learn to trust his own instincts and capacities. Moreover, he will learn to think and speak not just for his self but also for his colleagues and their organization. His responsibilities go beyond his existence for responsibilities are extended in wider range of people.

This kind of taking responsibilities does not just benefits the students served and the school but also the leader’s sole self.

He learns to be responsible and accountable. He learns to make wise decisions. He learns to respect other’s ideas, and on the top of these, he goes through experiences an ordinary student cannot.

Educating is one effective move in preparing students in their future endeavour.

Encouraging them to be interested in student leading also aims the same idea. It does not just mold their minds but as well as their skills, confidence, critical judgment and their way of interacting with varying personalities.

Duterte wins adherents for Federalism and Presidency Davao City- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte continued to give a categorical answer on whether or not he will run for President in 2016. The first time that he has come close to a positive reply was when he was interviewed at ‘Give Us This Day’ televised program of Pastor Apollo C. Quibiloy. In response to a text message which urged him to run for President, Mayor Duterte told the TV audience and those from the gallery watching the show live to first seriously consider those from the “North”, meaning Binay, Roxas and Poe, and that if any of the three does not meet the their expectation then look “South” obviously referring to himself.

He repeated the same suggestive response when he spoke in Dagupan where he added that he “is willing to run to save the country from being fractured”. But just when the Duterte watchers start to celebrate, the shrewd mayor would issue another statement in yet another forum that as far as he is concerned the Presidency is “a long shot”.

Over the weekend in Rockwell, Makati where Duterte was invited to speak before Metro Manila’s Architects and Construction moguls, the Mayor focused his talk on Federalism, crime and punishment. He gave a bit of history on how the present unitary government

was handed down from Spanish conquestadores and perpetuated by the Americans. “The unitary system was meant to tighten control on the Filipinos.

When we were ceded to the Americans, they did not change the system to Federal because they want to deal only with the central government”, Duterte said.

The mayor explained that the conflict in Mindanao can be effectively and permanently addressed under the Federal System.

Duterte had two other speaking engagements with two Rotary International District Conferences, the first with southern Luzon Rotarians which was held in Sofitel Hotel in Manila and the recent one with Eastern Visayas and Eastern Mindanao Rotarians at the SMX convention hall in Lanang, Davao City.

The mayor again asked his audience to support the Federal System of government stressing that only when the regions will be given just autonomy will they be able to make and implement their own plans according their needs and not on the whims of the central government. He also enunciated that under a Federal System the regional governments or states will retain at least 60 percent of the revenues collected and remit only 40% to the central government for its upkeep.

Duterte lamented that under the present set up the local government units remits all collections to the national treasury and wait for their share which will come as internal revenue allotment.

DOLE to convert Phividec area as Labor Law Compliant Ecozone JCI to give Youth Leadership CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -The Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office 10 (DOLE-10), in partnership with the Phividec Industrial Authority (PIA) and Phividec Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental (PIE-MO), recently conducted a simultaneous Joint Assessment (JA) to all existing Phividec locators in Eastern Misamis Oriental, gearing towards the proposed declaration of Phividec as a Labor Law Compliant Ecozone, the first ever in Mindanao.

The Philvidec complaince is one of the flagship projects of DOLE-10 for the year 2015 in their Labor Law Compliance System (LLCS) program, Mildred R. EnerioDablio, administrative officer V, DOLE-10, said.

Dablio explained the LLCS is the integrated framework for voluntary compliance and enforvcement of labor laws and social legislations issued pursuant to the rulemaking and visitorial and enforcement power of the S ecretar y of L abor and Employment.

Woman victim: The abuse just had to stop

MAE (not her real name) is a victim of verbal abuse by her ex-boyfriend, whom she thought would be someone she could love and spend the rest of her life with. But she started to think twice about that dream when he started to abuse her emotionally and verbally.

“Sige lang ko niya siyagitan ug makasakit nga mga pulong – nga wala kuno koy pulos.

Iya kong paka-ulawan sa kadaghanan ug atubangan sa iyang mga barkada (He would shout hurtful things to me – that I was worthless.

He would ridicule me in front of the public or when he is with his friends),” she recalls.

“Sa pila ka tuig, iya kong gi-abusar. Ug tungod niana halos mu-tuo na ko nga basin tinuod pud iyang ginapamulong nako.

Gikaminusan na pud nako akong kaugalingon (for years, he had been doing that to me. And, because of that I started to believe that maybe he was right. I felt ashamed about myself ).”

After being constantly harassed and abused by her ex-boyfriend for almost four years, she finally took the courage to report her case to the authorities.

“Naay gamay nga tingog sa akong huna-huna nga gasulti sa ako nga gikinahanglan na gyud nga maundang kini – nga gikinahanglan nako depensahan akong kaugalingon sa legal nga

pamaagi. Ang katong tingog maoy naghatag kanako ug kaisog nga mu-report sa otoridad (there was deep voice inside me telling me that this has to stop - that I have to fight for who I am, legally. That voice gave me the courage to finally report my case to the government authorities).”

While her case is currently being handled by the DSWD and the courts, she is now residing at the Regional Haven for Women run by the Department for adult women under very difficult circumstances.

“Nakita nako ang akong panimalay dinhi nga nagpahinumdum sa ako nga naa koy pulos – nga ako adunay katungod (I have found a home here where I am reminded that I am not worthless at all, that I am somebody with rights),” Mae says. “Kumpara niadtong mga niagi nga mga tuig, makaingon gyud ko nga arang-arang na ko sa akong gibati ug sa spiritwal nga kabahin (compared to what I have been through for the last few years, I could definitely say that I am getting better emotionally and spiritually).”

Mae is one of the 52 women who are currently residing at the Haven today, receiving counselling, psychological therapy and even medical interventions, while their cases are still being handled.

BUTUAN CIT Y – The Department of Agriculture (DA) continues to achieve its goal to attain and sustain rice self-sufficiency during the current administration and beyond 2016.

By so doing, it acknowledges the support of agriculture extension workers (AEWs), local farm technicians (LFTs), and local government units (LGUs) in implementing programs for farmers in improving production without which the objective will not be made possible.

DA-13 has recognized nine AEWs, two LFTs and the local government of Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, as national winners of the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers Awards (APRAA) 2014, representing Caraga region.

The AEW awardees are Editha G. Osin, Patricinio G. Moran, Jr., Marion G. Martin III and Lindamar I. Nonan of Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur; Perla P. Darang, Cecilia G. Adulmajid, and Gertrulyn T. Natonton of Buenavista, Agusan del Norte; Eulalia E. Pore of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur, and Victoria I. Rosa of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte.

Two Caraga LFTs are national awardees: Violeta Alegado of Buenavista, Agusan del Norte and Elenita L. Limpag of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur. The Municipality of Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur is one of the outstanding LGUs (Municipality Categor y) “which brought significant contribution towards the increase of rice production in the region and the country as a whole in meeting the targets under the Food Staples Sufficiency Program.”

contraceptives in implementing the RH Law, these funds should be put to better use in providing genuine health services for the millions of poor families,” Romualdez said.

Under the measure, all laws, decrees, rules, regulations, executive orders and other inconsistent with the proposed Act are also repealed.

Climate Change advocates goes to Nabunturan school COMPOSTELA VALLEY -- A group of environment advocates visited recently Nabunturan National Comprehensive High School (NNCHS) to promote understanding on climate change.

NNCHS in Compostela Valley Province is the third school in the region that hosted the Climate Change Forum for Students; the other two were ACES Polytechnic

College in Panabo City, Davao del Norte and Badas National High School in Mati City, Davao Oriental.

Around 800 NNCHS students participated in the forum held at the school’s gymnasium.

Jointly conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Res ources (DENR), and Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the forum highlighted topics

on understanding climate change, global warming and hydromet hazards.

Abangan in her lecture said that the students must keenly observe the changes in their environment to know how to adapt to it.

EU submits formal pledge of action to UN The European Union submitted on Friday its formal climate action plan after 2020 to the United Nations. The ambition of the pledge, however, was doubted by some NGOs. According to the plan, called the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC), which posted on the website of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the EU pledged to reduce its greenhouse emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels with domestic efforts.

The EU said that its target represents “a significant progression” and is inconsistent with needs to halve global

emissions by 2050 compared to 1990.

Some NGOs, however, doubted that the target, which was initially set in an EU summit last October, was far from sufficient regarding the EU’s historical responsibility and current capability.

“The science is very clear that such weak targets, combined with the ongoing use of discredited carbon markets, means we are not on track to tackle the climate crisis, and that the EU is now complicit in committing us to further destruction,” said Philippine climate activist Lidy Nacpil in an emailed statement.

In previous rounds of UN

climate talks, officials from developing countries had criticized that the 40-percent target should be reached by 2020 instead of 2030 since emissions in the EU had already been reduced by 19 percent in 2013 compared with 1990 levels.

Currently, the EU only agreed to cut emissions by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 1990.

A lack of contents about finance and technology support to developing countries and compensation to vulnerable countries in EU’s submission on Friday also triggered disappointment.

“How can we adapt to climate change impacts without a commitment on finance? How

can African governments scale up their climate action if they don’t know what finance and technology is available to them?” said Azeb Girmai from LDCWatch in Ethiopia.

“A lack of a finance commitment is a lack of a commitment to a meaningful climate deal in Paris,” she said.

The EU was the second party to submit its contribution to the Bonn-based UNFCCC. Countries were asked to make their submission before October this year, in advance of a new universal climate agreement to be inked in Paris in December.

The use of internet is already a normal trend these days. It is being used everywhere, including in schools.

T h e a d v a nt a g e o f internet comes to school activities is that students could have access to larger scope of learning. In other words, they are not just limited on what books have given them but as well on the newest and latest information, such as fresh news and current affairs. Exposing children to modern technologies could help them to be at par with the advancing knowledge.

Howe ve r, p are nt s , guardians and teachers alike should consider that it is their responsibility to guide youngsters in using internet.

Internet is thousands of libraries combined.

Meaning, there are a lot of information pieces recorded in there. People would not completely know what kind of information will pop up after clicking the Enter key. This goes the same with children.

Thus, it is important for a parent, for one, to guide children through providing them safe links to read

and explore or through explaining to them every critical datum that a child sees in the screen.

It is also important for a parent to look into both positive and negative impact with the use of internet. He should not scare the child on the negative things about internet because it will create bad perspective.

Instead, he should discuss positive things such as stressing its good use i n e du c at i on an d i n dissemination of important information.

M o r e o v e r, p a r e n t should not as well forget the negative things about Internet. People of all ages share information and sometimes do not care what other people would think. So, parent should guide children when it comes to this. After all, further explanation and understanding are all what the students need.

Internet is a good thing for students. However, if used in bad purpose and if misguided, Internet could ruin them and their thinking. Furthermore, teachers, parents and guardians should guide them is all venues possible.

IP Pantawid scholar encourages lumad children to finish studies CAGAYAN de Oro City --- A Higaonon Pantawid Pamilya college scholar here is urging his fellow lumad children to finish their studies.

Marlon Mandago, 24 of Tagmaray, San Luis, Malitbog, Bukidnon, is a third year student of Mindanao University of Science and Technology, taking up Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, major in Physical Sciences.

At a very young age, Marlon has witnessed the economic struggle of his parents who are laborers of a vegetable farm in the hinterland municipality of Malitbog, some 42.6 kilometers off southeast of here.

During his elementary days, Marlon recalled that his parents would take home P50 each a day after rendering services to the vegetable farm. Now, it has increased to P100 a day, but, still below the daily minimum wage standard which is P284.

“I don’t want to go through what my parents had gone through,” Marlon said,

adding that he is determined to finish his college education.

“That is why I am encouraging IP communities to prioritize education because it will lift us out from poverty to prosperity,” Marlon said.

Marlon is the eldest of the Mandago siblings. His family is living with his grandparents until now.

End Violence against women Living in a patristic-influenced community, where men dominate, Marlon is calling lumad women in his community to assert their rights.

“They should not just mum if they are right, they should assert their rights,” stressed Marlon when ask on his insights to the celebration of Women’s Month.

Also, he calls an end to violence against women, although he disclosed that he seldom heard of complaints on violence against women and children in his community.

Preserving Higaonon’s Heritage Marlon fluently speaks Higaonon language despite being influenced by Dumagats, a term used for urban setllers.

Even inside MUST campus, located at the heart of this highly urbanized city, Marlon opts to use his dialect in communicating with fellow lumad.

Marlon disclosed he has a friend from Talakag, Bukidnon, some 87 kilometers off south of this city, who speaks Higaonon dialect.

Despite his exposure to big cities like Cebu, where he spent his secondary formation, Marlon said he wants to keep and preserve the traditions of Higaonons. One of those is on marriage and on their beliefs.

Marlon said he will certainly pass those traditions to his children in the future.

Thankful to DSWD Marlon is thankful to DSWD for helping him reach for his dream-that is, to finish a college degree.

If not for the college scholarship under the Expanded Student Grants-In-Aid Program-for Poverty Alleviation of the Pantawid Pamilya of DSWD, Marlon said his dream would be a bleak one.

In 2012, the Pantawid Pamilya in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) launched and eventually rolled-out the ESGPPA

for Pantawid Pamilya households, whose members are about to enroll or are currently enrolled in college.

The scholarship program aims to contribute to the thrusts of the National Government in addressing poverty alleviation by providing higher education to poor households, giving them better opportunities of being employed, and thereby lifting their families out of poverty.

Under the program, children of the household beneficiary will have an opportunity to pursue tertiary education provided that they qualify for the said scholarship.

Currently, Northern Mindanao has more than 2,037 college scholars who are enrolled in the different State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) duly recognized by CHED. Pantawid Pamilya is a human development program of the national government that invests in the health and education of the poor households by providing monthly cash grants to beneficiaries, provided that they comply with the set of conditions required by the program.

As for his community, Marlon disclosed that DSWD is one of the government agencies “that help people build a peaceful life.”

With DSWD’s intervention, Marlon believes that “Kaya ko ang Pagbabago dahil sa tulong nga Pantawid Pamilya at DSWD.” (I can make a difference because of the help of Pantawid Pamilya and DSWD.”

JCI Phils to give Youth Leadership Excellence Award in CdeO

THE Youth Leadership Excellence Awards (YLEA), one of the flagship projects of the Junior Chamber International-Philippines, in partnership with the Department of Education and the office of Hon. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, is now on its 30th year.

The objective of the project is basically to

honor outstanding students of the private and public elementary schools and high schools (usually the Valedictorian, but not necessarily) for their leadership qualities and academic achievement.

GCTCV-219 variety has less uniform hand formation and its fingers are more spread than the commercial Grand Naine Cavendish variety.

Hence, a small-cluster packaging for GCTCV-219, containing only about 4−5 fingers per cluster was initiated as a market strategy, giving the new variety a good packaging presentation. In addition, it received “sweeter” branding as compared to other varieties, allowing it an initial niche share in the Japanese market. GCTCV-219 is now sold as premium Cavendish banana under the Miyabi brand and tagged as “elegant taste banana” or “sweet banana.”

This endeavor was carried out by the Philippine Fresh Fruits Corporation, owned

by Mr. Lucianao Puyod, one of the farmer-cooperators of the Bioversity Internationalled projects supported by the Department of AgricultureBureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR).

In 2012, the two institutions embarked on two banana projects to provide Cavendish growers an immediate solution to Fusarium wilt that was threatening to wipe out banana plantations.

Through the projects, GCTCV-219 was introduced to 20 farmer-cooperators in Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Compostela Valley, whose farms were totally destroyed by the disease. The growers were given more than 30,000 seedlings for piloting in their farms and many of them have already harvested their crops.

Results of the field trials showed that GCTCV-219 is significantly more resistant to Fusarium wilt than Grand Naine, which was totally destroyed by the disease as early as during the primary cropping in most farms. On the other hand, an average of only 1% infection was recorded for GCTCV-219 even after the ratoon or second crop.

The Mauro and Sons Farm in Calinan, Davao has had a successful production of GCTCV-219, the fruits of which are now sold in Japan as sweet banana through a multinational company.

Other growers sell their fruits to other markets, such as China.

The GCTCV-219 breed is an enhanced selection of another Fusarium wiltresistant variety, GCTCV-119, developed and shared by the Taiwan Banana Research Institute.

In 2002, a Nat iona l Repository Multiplication Development Center (NRMDC) was established in UP Los Baños, Laguna through Bioversity International and DA-BAR, to serve as repository for improved banana varieties from different countries that are collaborating with Bioversity Internationalcoordinated Banana Asia

Pacific Network (BAPNET) of which the Philippines is a member.

One of the varieties introduced at the NRMDC was the Fusarium wiltr e s i s t a nt G C T C V- 1 1 9 .

Through recurrent selection done in Davao, a more improved genotype was developed and eventually called GCTCV-219.

Initial evaluation of the varieties was conducted in partnership with the Phi lippine C ounci l for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natura l Res ources Research and Development (PCAARRD) and Lapanday Fruits Corporation, a Davaobased commercial banana plantation.

“For now, the variety gives high hopes for the mitigation of this devastating disease threatening the multi-billion peso banana export, an important source of foreign revenue and providing direct livelihood to more than 320,000 people in Mindanao.

More than 3,000 hectares have already been reported to be totally devastated by the disease” Dr. Molina said.

While Dr. Molina does not recommend GCTCV-219 as am immediate replacement to the current commercial varieties that are not yet affected by the disease and are still economically grown, the GCTCV-219 variety is a very good option in case the disease goes out of hand and totally destroys a plantation.

Dr. Molina added that as the pathogen stays in the soil for many years, a susceptible variety can no longer become productive, leaving banana growers resorting to lessincome crops like corn. (DABAR)

Topics discussed in the briefing include the role of NGCP in the energ y industr y, power-related events and incidents, commonly-used terms in the power industry, Mindanao power situation, right-ofway (ROW) problems in the Lanao area, and transmission

line safety reminders.

Right-of-way violations The NGCP admitted that it is having a hard time in addressing the ROW problems that hamper the operations and maintenance of transmission facilities.

Engr. Avelino Dawis, head of the NGCP District 2 Operations and Maintenance head, said the ROW issue in the Lanao areas disrupts the transmission of power and has caused line trippings and brownouts.

He said NGCP has been de a ling w it h t he ROW problem in Lanao since it took over the transmission operations. It has sought the help of the Baloi municipal government, the military, and even the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to curb the intentional planting of trees under and along transmission lines.

“But the ROW problem is getting worse. Because of this, some transmission lines are no longer operational,” he added.

NGCP has already filed expropriation cases for ROW violators.

Dawis said NGCP has stopped negotiating with the landowners and resorted to legal actions to solve t he problem. “But t his action is a slow process and the worsening of the ROW concern might affect the whole Mindanao transmission especially,” he emphasized.

Tourism Council honors Partners & Achievers in ‘Pasalamat’

T

he Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Council honored its partners and supporters for the council’s top events in the past year and recognized achievers who brought honor and prestige to the city.

Dubbed “Pasalamat” the “Thanksgiving and Tribute to Partners” was hosted by Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez, chair of the CTC Arts and Culture Committee at Liceo de Cagayan de Oro’s Rodelsa Hall. Dr. Pelaez also hosted cocktails for the honorees and guests prior to the event.

Ms. Dorothy Jean B. Pabayo, CTC Chair, said the long-delayed event honored sponsors and supporters for the Higala-ay Kagay-an Festival and the first Pasko de Oro CTC signature event which brought together the city’s Christmas season events under one umbrella.

Besides the festival sponsors and supporters, Pasalamat also honored the Cagayan de Oro Design Team headed by Dr. Dionel Albina of MUST which won the grand prize in the City Government/Evacuation Center category in the 1st Liveable Cities Design Challenge held last October, 2014 at the PICC in Manila.

Mayor Oscar S. Moreno thanked the council and its supporters for putting Cagayan de Oro on the map. He also briefed those present with the city administration’s accomplishments in the past year among which were bring ranked #2 (second only to Makati) as the Philippines’ Most Competitive City and outstanding in e-Governance.

Ms. Eileen E. San Juan, chairperson of the CTC Events Committee, presented a preview of the 2015 City Events highlighted by the Higalaay Kagay-an Festival in August honoring the city’s patron saint, Saint Augustine.

As a climax to the evening’s presentations, the Next Moves Modern Dance Company of the Liceo de Cagayan University headed by Choreographer Roger E. Odron presented a ‘Pasalamat Dance Concert’ a mélange of ten modern dances set to modern music, (as Dr. Pelaez aptly described it) as a treat to the honorees.

Receiving the most applause were “Anak” set to the 2nd Metro Manila Music Grand Prize Winning song of the same title by Freddie Aguilar but with a new interpretation, and the nationalistic “Mi Ultimo Adios”, both choreographed by Roger. E. Odron. The other equally well applauded numbers were choreographed

by Mark Paul Sabando, Kin Escrin, Mark Anthony Agcopra, and Arnie Jumao-as.
