DA said that according to Dr. Agustin B. Molina of Bioversity International-Asia and the Pacific Office, “With optimization of harvesting time and ripening protocol, innovative 4−5 fingers cluster packaging and improved branding, the new banana variety has gained acceptance in Japan.” Known to breeders as GCTCV-219 (for Giant Cavendish Tissue-Culture Variant), the new variety is resistant to Fusarium wilt (also called Panama disease) Tropical Race 4, and could thus be a potential alternative
for the commercial Cavendish variety, which is susceptible to the destructive banana disease. But for the new variety to be accepted in the Japanese market, some innovations had to be made. According to Dr. Molina, the Japanese market requires full-hand packaging for which bananas must have compact and uniformly-cur ved fingers, the characteristics of the commercial Cavendish variety.
