Himugso THE lo c al g over nment of Cagayan de Oro will celebrate Philippine Independence Day and Charter Day anniversaries despite the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) period due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Cit y Mayor Oscar Moreno said it will proceed with some activities to c o m me m orate t he t wo events called "Himugso” which will begin on June 12 for the 123rd Independence Day, and culminate on June 15 for the 71st founding anniversary of this city. "The very important thing to do with this is, we have to organize it properly in order for us to be compliant with the regulations," he said in a virtual presser Saturday.
Hybrid rice AREAS PL ANTED to hybrid rice are expected to outperform other varieties by a wide margin, with observed yields so far of as much as 12 tons per hectare (t/ha), the Department of Agriculture (DA) said. Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar said in a memorandum circular that the DA will focus its efforts on 15 provinces selected for hybrid rice planting, with an expected yield advantage of at least 1 ton per hectare against the traditional inbred seed varieties. “ Many areas cannot attain the desired yield advantage and optimum yield because of various technical and agroecological reasons. Foremost among them is the limited technical support, improper nutrient management, and insufficient irrigation during the cropping period,” Mr. Dar said.

HE National Electrification Administration (NEA) is seeking write-off of the consumers’ “worthless receivables”, including those w hos e re c ords have b e en destroyed or already impossible to be retrieved.
In particular, NEA indicated in an addendum that it is providing clarification to the debts’ write-off mandate, following the bid of Lanao Del Sur Electric Cooperative (LASURECO) that its arrears be also expunged because records on such have already been lost or destroyed, including electronic storage devices, because of the armed conflict in Marawi in 2017. According to NEA Administrator Edgardo R. Masongsong, “the existing NEA guidelines on the writing-off of receivables do not cover such conditions as a qualification for the writing-off of said receivables.” Under the agency’s directive, he qualified POWER/PAGE 7

BARMM’s Halal verification laboratory upgrade nears completion

OTABATO City – Construction is ongoing for the P47-million renovation and equipment upgrading of the Halal Verification Laboratory (HVL) inside the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) compound here. An update released Monday by the
Bangsamoro Information Office (BIO)-BARMM said the project is 70 to 80-percent complete. “The renovation started earlier this year and will be finished by July 2021,” BOI-BARMM senior officer Albashir Saiden said. In a statement, BARMM Minister Aida Silongan said the renovation intends to accommodate high-end
equipment and state-ofthe-art technology for Halal verification testing. Once completed, the laboratory will consist of state-of-the-art equipment that will include the gas chromatographymass spectrometryFID (GC/MS/FID); gas chromatography triple quadruple mass spectrometry (GC/MS); liquid chromatography triple quadruple mass
spectrometry (LC/MS); graphite furnace-atomic absorption spectroscopy (GF-AAS); and reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction apparatus. The new pieces of equipment are capable of ethanol analysis, gelatin analysis, pesticide residue analysis, minerals in food, heavy metals in food and water, meat authenticity, and porcine DNA detection in meat-based

Silongan said the undertaking is being initiated under the Bangsamoro Standards and Halal Testing Laboratories Program. “This project fulfills one of the MOST’s (Ministry of Science and Technology) mandates to strengthen the development of Halal industry through testing, analysis, and capacity building,” she said. The BARMM’s HVL is one of the four Halal laboratories in the Philippines. The three other laboratories are located in Laguna (Department of Science and Technology
(DOST-Calabarzon); Koronadal City (DOST12); and Davao City (DOST-11). All four laboratories are members of the DOST/MOST Halal verification laboratories network. Republic Act 10817, also known as the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016, mandates the inclusion of the Halal program in the plans and programs of different government agencies that have jurisdiction and can contribute to the growth of export of Halal products, processes, and services. Littering waste particularly food wraps waste into places not designated to dispose of it. It all happens to owe to the poor system of either garbage collection, in school and community. In Balubal NHS, as a coordinator I see to it that the proper segregation is implemented thoroughly. Students and teachers alike are working on it. They learn a garbage disposal in placed in proper places. In fact, Balubal NHS has won in Oro Kalimpyo Award wayback 2020 in its effort to implement such advocacy.

Grateful and fulfilled: A Brief Recollection JESSICA JOY D. HINACAY
Once I was asked if I am happy about what I have been doing all these years in the education sector. Unable to give a yes or a no answer, I too questioned myself. After seeing my spiritual director, I was able to redirect the question by telling myself that I am grateful and fulfilled. Knowing that I am one of the privileged people given the opportunity to serve the Filipino children in Mindanao, I am truly grateful. Serving the people in the community for almost two decades has given me a great sense of fulfillment and purpose. Through these years, I have seen how the
educational system have evolved. Looking back, I have also seen myself grow from my experiences as an educator. Of all these experiences, gazing at the learners’ eyes while teaching and working with the community are among my most treasured ones. It is where my dreams and aspirations for my schools are built. Hard work comes with success, but I could only recall the feeling of fulfillment instead exhaustion. After all the smiles of the people in the community and pupils’ learning have paid all the hard work done. In the service I will remain.

This poem resonates what most teachers so badly want to hear. An affirmation that despite the changes they have to go through to be able to cope with the challenges this pandemic brings, their dedication and commitment to continue education remains steadfast. The trust of fostering a culture
of learning even beyond the four walls of the classroom is a constant that any educator is willing to accept. As the school registrar of Misamis Occidental National High School, I am like an outsider looking in. Outsider in the sense that I am not a teacher per se. But having worked in one of the biggest public schools in the province, I have am a witness firsthand how the teachers in our school made remarkable innovations in order not to shortchanged our students in terms of quality education despite the limitations we are facing.

Researchers stated that HDL cholesterol rise nearly 5% after eating cookies containing about 40g of powdered soy protein daily for 12 weeks. Powdered is also found in energ y boosting candy bars and drink. To get 40g of protein from soybeans, you would need to consume 110g of beans and tofu. When it comes to cholesterol, the elderly has their own rules. A study of men of ages 71 to 93 found that an enviably low
level of total cholesterol. However, for middle-aged guys has 4.1 millimoles or below but this maybe too low for seniors, putting them at increased risk for heart disease. Reading from 5.2 to 5.6 millimoles, which might make younger men worry but it turns out to be ideal for seniors. A little cholesterol and the occasional burger may not be so bad if you are old enough to handle it. BAD NEWS The dandy of TEA AND PLAQUE No wonder researchers have great hopes for green tea. It’s loaded with powerful anticancer agents like polyphenol, which in the lab at least, inhibit cells proliferation. Well time to
reread those tea leaves. A study shows that folks who drink five or more cups of green tea a day are just like to develop stomach cancer. Don’t toss out the tea pot. However, green tea may still protect against other cancer. You thought chronic infections like sinusitis or bronchitis were punishment enough? Now a study suggests that people who get repeat infections have threefold greater risk of developing ar ter y clog g ing pl aque. Making chronic infections a stronger risk factor that even high blood pressure or ele vated cholesterol. Why? To fight infections, the body release substances that may make arterial walls, vulnerable to clogging.

Here's how countries around the world are reopening
A factbox on how different countries are plotting the road back to normal and a list of what's open where and when can travel resume. 06 June 2021 As the Covid-19 vaccine rollout gains momentum, many countries are planning a gradual return to normal, opening borders and letting people back into restaurants, shops and sports venues after more than a year of on-off lockdowns. Here are some of their plans, in alphabetical order: BRITAIN Non-essential retailers in England reopened on April 12 along with pubs and restaurants operating outdoors. Indoor hospitality, cinemas, t he at res, and sports halls reopened on May 17. Britain also allowed international travel to resume, with quarantine rules still in place for most arrivals. The government aims to lift most remaining restrictions in England on June 21. CHILE Fully vaccinated Chileans can move more freely within the country but borders will remain closed through midJune. EGYPT Egypt lifted restrictions imp os e d in e arly May, including early closure of shops and restaurants, from June 1. FRANCE France allowed cafes, bars and restaurants to offer outside service from May 19, with indoor dining to follow on June 30. It also pushed back a nightly curfew to 9pm from 7pm. That will be moved to 11 pm from June 9 and scrapped completely on June 30. Shops, museums, cinemas and theatres reopened on May
19. Foreign tourists with a "health pass" will be able to visit from June 9. GERMANY Germany eased restrictions on those fully vaccinated or recovered from the virus from May 9, lifting curfews and quarantine rules as well as the obligation to provide a negative test result to visit a hairdresser, zoo or to go shopping. From May 12, travellers have been able to enter the country without the need to quarantine, except those arriving from countries designated as risk areas. Berlin lifted a nightly curfew and eased restrictions on shopping from May 19 and allowed outdoor dining from May 21. Germany is on target for outdoor concerts this summer, with social distancing and COVID-19 testing for attendees, and fans should be back at soccer matches in August. GREECE Greece reopened restaurants and bars from May 3, organised beaches on May 8, and the tourism industry on May 15. Tourists from the rest of the EU as well as Britain, the United States and Israel can visit if they have been vaccinated, show negative test results, or have recovered from the virus. ISRAEL Israel reopened its borders to foreign tourists on May 23. Under a pilot programme due to continue until June 15, it gave the green light to visits by 20 groups of between five and 30 tourists from countries including the United States, Britain and Germany. It hopes to let individual tourists in from July. ITALY It a l i a n c o f f e e b a r s ,
restaurants, cinemas and theatres partially reopened in most regions on April 26. Indoor service at restaurants opened from June 1. Italy lifted quarantine restrictions for travellers arriving from European and Schengen zone countries, as well as Britain and Israel, from May 15. On May 18, it pushed back a nightly curfew to 11 pm and eased other curbs in low-risk regions. The curfew will begin at midnight from June 7 and be abolished from June 21. Gyms reopened on May 24. THE NETHERLANDS The Netherlands lifted a nationwide curfew on April 28. Parks, zoos, gyms and outdoor swimming pools reopened on May 19, while outdoor service at bars and restaurants was extended until 8 pm. Indoor service will be allowed from June 5. Public libraries opened on May 20, with museums set to follow on June 5. Sports matches will be allowed from June 30 if infections stay at the current level, with restaurants allowed to serve up to 100 people until midnight. POLAND Poland reopened shopping centres on May 4, hotels from May 8, and restaurants were allowed to serve food outdoors from May 15. Cinemas, theatres, concert halls and cultural institutions opened on May 21, while indoor dining, indoor sports facilities and swimming pools reopened with capacity restrictions on May 28. Indoor events such as weddings with up to 50 people were allowed from May 28, while all students returned to school on May 31. QATAR Qatar will gradually lift

restrictions through July 30. From May 28, leisure, education centres, restaurants, gyms, pools, and salons have been able to operate at limited capacity, but bans on weddings, conferences and exhibitions remain in place. Local and international sporting events can take place with fully vaccinated fans in open-space venues at 30 per cent capacity. SAUDI ARABIA On May 17, Saudi Arabia opened land, sea and air borders. From May 20, foreign visitors arriving by air from most countries no longer need to quarantine if they have been vaccinated. It lifted a ban on travellers from 11 countries including the United States, Britain, France and Japan, on May 30. Entertainment venues were allowed to open at 40 per cent capacity for those vaccinated from May 27, according to state TV. Sanctification should be our main business THERE should be no doubt about this. No ifs or buts. Sanctification is and should be our main business in this life, our constant concern all throughout. And that’s simply because at the end of the day, at the end of our life, that is what truly matters. Ever ything else is meant only as a means, an occasion or a reason for pursuing this ultimate goal of ours. St. Paul said it clearly: “This is the will of God, your sanctification.” (1 Thes 4,3) St. Peter echoed the same sentiment: “Just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written, ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Pt 1,15-16) Christ, of course, repeatedly told us about this. “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt 5,48) And this ideal can be attained, not only after our death, but even now, as we cruise through this vale of tears of ours, because Christ does it with us and for us.
Christ has given us all the means. In fact, he has given us his very own self, because we can only be truly holy when we become entirely “alter Christus” (another Christ), if not “ipse Christus” (Christ himself ). We have to realize that all the situations of our life here on earth, including t h o s e t h at i nvolve ou r miseries, failures and sin, can be and should be a means and occasion for sanctification if they are referred to Christ. And that’s because Christ precisely wou ld show us how to convert everything into a means of our sanctification. We need to make this truth of our faith sink deep in our consciousness, so that however our life turns, we still would be on track toward our ultimate goal, and avoid getting unduly entangled and stranded in the drama of our life here on earth. Right at the start of the day, we should already be clear about what our main business and concern is.
And from there, let’s start to make the appropriate plans and strategies, so that all the events of the day, the ups and downs, would work for this purpose. To be sure, this kind of understanding of the purpose of our life would not take us away from our earthly responsibilities. On the contrary, it would sharpen and purif y our interest in them, knowing that these duties and responsibilities are precisely the fulfillment of our duty to attain our ultimate goal. Especially these days when we see a drifting away from this main concern of our life in the world of business and politics and in practically all the other aspects of temporal affairs, we need to strongly and abidingly inculcate this understanding of the real business of our life in everyone. Let’s hope that we can count on a good number of persons who can spearhead this delicate task and be effective endorsers of this cause.

PhilSys Step 2 registration in N. Mindanao starts THE Step 2 registration process for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in Northern Mindanao will start this month. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region 10 director Janith Aves said they aim to start the second step of registration in the province of Camiguin on June 7, in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental on June 14, and Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental on June 21. "Definitely for Cagayan de Oro City, we still could not open by June 14 because we are still in MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine). Probably we can start (on) June 16,"

The registration schedules are intended for those who were included in the house-to-house data collection from selected villages with low-income households since they are the priority. Property custodians are the individuals responsible for the physical custody, care, and safekeeping over property in their possession or under their supervision. Custodians often have other job responsibilities aside f rom t h e m an a ge m e nt o f p r o p e r t y. P h y s i c a l inventories are an important aspect of a property custodian’s responsibilities. The designated property custodians perform, among others, important workloads that include the receipt, issuance, and maintenance, safekeeping of supplies, materials and equipment and other properties and facilities of the school. If flubs are followed by changes in behavior such as irritability, depression or irrational suspicious these means memory were disrupted or at least minor tune up and maybe a complete overhaul. Not everyone found this convincing because there was no evidence that the new brain cells had anything to do with memory or that they did anything at all. Even then, don’t jump to hasty conclusions. In middle age, many things can cause memory loss or mental fuzziness, to say nothing of confused thinking-menopause for example, whose effect can be eased with estrogen. Our brains, in any case, have evolved with a certain built-in forgetfulness, lest they become hopelessly cluttered with useless information. These might mix confusion and awe.
In older people, memory problem may be the result of poor diet, vitamin deficiencies or glandular imbalances. Even a physician ultimately diagnoses Alzheimer’s disease which is done by eliminating other possibilities rather than by a direct test because none is available other than a brain biopsy. The mind robbing disease is still incurable and the drugs that are currently available only ease certain symptoms like anxiety, confusion, and insomnia or slightly slow down its relentless progression. Scientist have identified some of the genes involved in the growth of the nerve cell killing plaques in the brain that are widely suspected to be at the root of the disease. But for all these puzzlements, it holds a hope that experiment by experiment that researchers are deepening their knowledge of how memory works and inching toward a day when they can repair it when it falters.

The power of forgiveness is almost irresistible. Almost! Because we can still refuse to ask and receive forgiveness. But then we pay the highest price for our pride and rejecting God’s forgiveness; because without it we cannot be freed from our guilt and live in a right relationship
with our Heavenly Father. Our Creator has already paid the penalty for our wrong heart and sinful living with His own life. You simply and sincerely need to ask Jesus to forgive you for your sins and living your own way. Then, He can start changing you from the inside out. He will even empower and free you to forgive others as He forgave you. Just think a minute.

Deprivation can take many different forms. Economic poverty is not the only kind of poverty that impoverishes hu m a n l i v e s .
