Chinese undeterred DAVAO City -- The level of interest of Chinese investors in doing business in the country remains “high” and upbeat as evidenced by the recent visit of a group of Chinese business leaders one week after the declaration of martial law in Mindanao. Davao City Investment Promotions Center (DCIPIC) head Lemuel Ortonio said he recently met with a group of Chinese investors who are interested to put up accommodation facilities, parks, and other tourism facilities. DepEd sees students’ exodus to Iligan By MARK FRANCISCO, Staff Writer

THE Department of Education (DepEd) is bracing for the expected influx of displaced students in Marawi City to enrol in Iligan City. In a meeting with all the six DepEd regional directors from Mindanao last Tuesday in Cagayan de Oro City, Education Secretary Leonor Briones estimated that around 2,155 elementary, junior high and senior high students will re-enrol in both public and private schools in Iligan City. Briones also admitted that the agency is overwhelmed

by the exodus thus resulting to a shortage of classrooms in the vicinity. Speaking to reporters after her meeting with the regional directors, Briones said that DepEd will be erecting what she dubbed as “temporary learning spaces” or tents for the students to use in the next academic year which will start this Monday. “For the tents, there will be no budgetary problem as based from experience, a lot of sectors are expressing exodus/PAGE 11

“Demand (is seen) to continue in the IT-BPO sector despite what’s happening in Mindanao. So, it’s business as usual,” Rick Santos, Chairman and CEO of Santos Knight Frank, formerly CBRE Philippines, said in a press conference Thursday. He added that the business sector is looking at the declaration of martial law in Mindanao as a practical and short-term solution to address lawlessness in the region. “With regards to martial law, it’s a temporary measure to take care of some of the lawlessness,” Santos noted. Earlier this week, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez stressed that martial law will not harm economic activities in Mindanao. prospects/PAGE 11
