Rice prices up THE average farmgate price of palay or unmilled rice rose 0.5% week-on-week to P19.15 per kilogram in the third week of May, with prices increasing 5.3% year-on-year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). In its weekly update on palay, rice and corn prices, the PSA said the wholesale price of well-milled rice (WMR) rose 0.5% to P39.43 per kilogram while the retail price rose 0.3% to P42.50. The wholesale price of regular milled rice (RMR) rose 0.3% to P35.83 while the retail price rose 0.2% to P38.25.

Asian Summit PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will join his fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) leaders in a virtual conference hosted by Vietnam on June 26, Malacañang confirmed on Thursday. “Kinu-kumpirma ko po na dadalo po [si President Duterte] dahil ito po ay online meeting ng Asean (I am confirming that President Duterte will be joining the online Asean meeting),” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser aired on state-run PTV-4. Asean leaders were supposed to hold their 36th annual summit in April this year but the meeting was postponed due to the global threat posed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Oca warns labs, firms running 'uncoordinated' Covid-19 tests CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno on Friday warned private clinics conducting rapid diagnostic tests, especially to persons returning to their workplaces. Moreno warned violators they will face legal action if they continue to conduct coronavirus tests without coordination with government health authorities. The warning came after the mayor said he found out Thursday that at least seven employees of a huge company were tested positive

for the virus using rapid testing equipment by a private laboratory. He said both the private laboratory and the company are liable for conducting the test without referring it first to the city health office (CHO). The city government has yet to divulge the identities of the entities in question. “I was disappointed since there was no consultation. They should have followed the protocol,” Moreno said during the daily press briefing TESTS/PAGE 10
