Decarbonized economy BUTUAN City -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) strongly supports and advocates decarbonizing economy by replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources of power such as hydro, geothermal, wind, solar, and bio energy in running the economic activities and by planting more trees that can absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHG).

In a press statement during the World Environment Day Media Conference held at DENR-13 Regional Learning Center, DENR Caraga regional director Nonito M. Tamayo said that every locality must adopt a decarbonized economy in order to have sustainable economy without degrading the environment.

“World leaders from 196 nations will gather in Paris on December 2015 to primarily discuss the Earth Statement on Eight Essential Elements of Climate Action, which could be an environmental blue print for new Millennium Development Goals or MDG. Some of these essential elements include recognition of the government commitment to limit to below two degrees Celsius heat and the assistance to poor countries through overseas development assistance (ODA) for decarbonized economy,” Tamayo revealed.

HE Department of Justice (DOJ) decided with finality to uphold the 2015 Cagayan de Oro City Revenue C ode, effectively quashing the city government’s opposition to the ordinance which was passed by a politically divided City Council in December last year.

In a five-page DOJ decision dated May 22, 2015 and released only lately, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said that City Hall’s arguments that the ordinance did not undergo public hearing and were not posted in public places could not hold water.

The decision stated that the City Council successfully completed the requisites of the ordinance passage by posting the proposed measure

at the bulletin boards at the Legislative Building of City Hall, the then Hall of Justice and the barangay halls of Bulua, Puerto, Puntod and Barangay 33.

200 youth plant mangroves 23rd Mindanao Culinary Festival in CDO’s coastal village

SOME 200 aspiring youth leaders here planted 400 mangrove propagules in Bonbon, a coastal village, north of the city, the city environment office said Thursday.

Edwin Dael, head of the city environment office, said that the youth selected Bonbon as the plantation site because the coastal village is the dumping site of silted soils that flow down the Cagayan De Oro City River.

He said that the existing mangrove trees in Bonbon filter the silted soils and protect

soil erosion that damaged the sand bars and shanties along the coastal area.

Allan Mabalacad, a village official said, that in the 2011 Typhoon Sendong, the mature mangrove trees prevented a major damage because they protected the coastlines from the storm surge that buffeted the coastal area with big objects.

Dael said that the mangrove planting was part of the threeday citywide youth leadership camp recently participated by the youths who are inspired to protect the environment. (PNA)

Davao to host culinary competition

D

AVAO City – Davao City will host the culinary competition where about 130 participants from all over the country will join during the 12th Mindanao Culinary Festival on June 25 to 27 at the SM Convention Center, this city.

Davao To u r i s m A s s o c i a t i o n ( D ATA ) president Sally San Jose said that, this time, they would like to raise the bar in the competition because it will be aligned with the

standards and mechanics of the Prestigious Culinary Cup (PPC) with the participation of chefs and apprentices nationwide.

The participants, she said will come from 17 schools, 9 restaurants and four hotels.

Of the total number, four participants are coming from other areas outside of Davao.

She said a lot of culinary schools are now operating in Davao City and this competition will be a test on the progress of the students

whether their works meet quality standards, including international requirement.

Meanwhile, James Antolin, treasurer of LTB Philippines Chefs Association who also sits as director of the PPC, said the festival will be held simultaneously with the World Food Expo (WOFEX) at SMX Convention Center.

He said the holding of the MCF is to gather key players in the culinary industry to the next level.

“We are here to help and at the same time find out what you have here so we can help promote them especially the freshness of Davao in terms of resources,” he said.

Antolin said Davao is a rich source of seafood and “we wanted this be promoted through dishes”.

He said the hosting of the MCF is setting the stage for the culinary players to explore and level up their skills.

According to him, there will be eight categories in the competition and only the winners of the categories for Young Chef and Filipino Cuisine will be sent to compete to the PCC that will be held on August 5 to 8 in Manila.

e have just celebrated that tremendous S ol e m n it y of t he B o dy and Blood of Christ.

Tremendous, because we can never have enough of the overwhelming truth and mystery that in spite of our natural limitations, not to mention, our infranatural defects due to our sins, Christ continues to be with us and to love us, offering himself as food to nourish us, heal us, save us.

We need to take time to savor and fathom a little this truth of our faith that shou l d f i l l us w it h j oy and hop e regard less of circumstances. This is not an exercise at escapism and fantasizing, but rather a realistic gesture-indeed, a necessity-given our true dig nit y as p ers ons and children of God. May we never get accustomed to this great s a c r am e nt of t h e Holy Eucharist that contains the very body and blood of Christ! With it, we actually have God himself with us, offering everything that we need to be what we ought to be. With it, time and eternity are united, the natural and supernatural, the material and spiritual, our sinf u lness and our salvation become one.

Yes, there are certain things, very fundamental and indispensable to know about ourselves, that we need to be more aware of and to be more consistent in. We are children of God,

created in his image and likeness, whose lives just cannot be by ourselves but, by definition, lives lived in God and with God. In o t h e r w o r d s , w e are not meant to merely have natural human lives.

Ours are also meant to be supernatural, a completely g r atu itou s pr iv i l e ge to which, with God’s grace, we are expected to correspond.

Our life with God is something that we have to work out.

It i s w o r t hw h i l e t o p aus e and me dit ate on this mystery. We should try to distance ourselves from our usual concerns, at least for a while, if only to enter into another level of reality-the spiritual and the supernatural-that we often take for granted.

Such effort, for sure, will do us a lot of good.

It would help us to see things holistically and to put us on a track that is most proper to us. Truth is we very often miss what is truly essential in our life.

We just get entangled with the peripherals in life which, while unavoidable and in a sense also necessary, are not the most important. We get confused as to which is our true end and which merely are means toward that end.

The Blessed Sacrament should be a magnet in our life. It will help us to have a supernatural tone in our outlook. It will remind us of the real purpose of our life. It will ser ve to organically shape our day.

It’s been said that the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life, the center and root of our spiritual life. We cannot overemphasize these overwhelming truths.

Philex unit’s bid to transfer coal contract OK’d PHILEX Petroleum Corp. on Wednesday said it has secured government approval to transfer its coal operating contract in Z amboanga Sibugay to a Mindanao-based company.

The company said it received on Tuesday a letter of approval from the Energy department regarding the assignment of Brixton Energy and Mining Corp.’s (BEMC) coal operating contract (CoC) 130 to Grace Coal Mining and Development, Inc. (GCMDI).

BEMC is the coal mining arm of Philex Petroleum, which is mainly engaged in petroleum exploration business.

Carlo S. Pablo, Philex Petroleum president, said in a text message yesterday: “We will be focusing on petroleum in the meantime.”

He added that there are also no immediate plans to dissolve BEMC. The Energy department’s l e tt e r at t a c h e d t o t h e disclosure showed that BEMC sought approval in January 2014.

“Af ter a thoroug h… evaluation, we found GCMDI

to be technically, financially and legally capable and competent to undertake the coal exploration and development and take over as operator of CoC No. 130,” the letter of approval read.

It added that GCMDI should “assume and perform the work obligations and commitments including the remaining work and financial commitments in the approved five-year work program of BEMC…” The underground coal mines of BEMC were shut down in September 2013 due to depressed coal prices.

Philex Petroleum was incorporated in 2007 to engage in the exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas, and coal.

AIRASIA on Tuesday won the World’s Best Low Cost Airline and Asia’s B est Low Cost Airline for the seventh consecutive year at the Skytrax World’s Airline Awards during the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget just outside the French capital.

AGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The city’s Environment and Natural Resources Office (C enro) on Wednesday appealed to the business sector in Cagayan De Oro to hire their own garbage trucks, because the city government cannot subsidize for them.

City environment and natural resources officer Edwin Dael said that the city government has a contract with IPM Construction and Development Corporation to collect only 15,000 cubic meters of garbage every month.

By contrast, an average

of 27,000 cubic meters of trash reaches the Carmen open dumpsite each month.

The excess mostly comes from huge businesses such as shopping centers, hotels and restaurants, according to Dael.

T h e g a r b a g e f i g u re would increase when more real estate developments such as subdivisions and condominiums and even shopping malls are likely to open in the next five years here, Dael said.

He said that the city government pays only a total of Php 5 million per month for the collection of garbage,

Yolanda survivor wins P100,000 from Talk ‘N Text A Yolanda survivor from La Paz, Iloilo City recently won the jackpot prize of P100,000 at the ‘Panalo Ka, Pilipinas’ the grand 15th anniversary show of Talk ‘N Text (TNT), the country’s largest mobile prepaid brand.

“All I wanted was to see the celebrities and enjoy the game booths with my two kids,” said Maribel Barit, who was among the thousands who had lost their homes when supertyphoon Yolanda ravaged parts of the Visayas in November 2013.

“I decided to buy a TNT SIM so I could join the raffle.

I was prepared to walk for over an hour because I had spent our fare back home,” she shared.

It was a gamble that paid off because Barit’s name was among those raffled to play on stage. Barit later bested other contestants in a series of elimination games to finally get to jackpot round of “Spin Para Sure Win,” where she luckily got the right combination to take home P100,000.

“I just can’t explain how

thankful I am! Winning the jackpot means a lot to our family because we would finally be able to pay off all our debts, which piled up after Yolanda,” said Barit, who makes ends meet with the meager income of her carpenter husband. “This is a big blessing that we will not take for granted.”

“With the current budget for garbage collection, the city government pays the IPM C onstr uc tion and Development Corp. a total of Php 60 million every year,” Dael said.

The amount of Php 60 million falls short to the

garbage fee collected by the City Finance Office from each business establishment, which totaled only to Php 27 million, which means that the excess amount of Php 33 million is subsidized by the city government, he said.

Dael told the members of the Cagayan De Oro Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (Oro Chamber) that the Php 60 million annual budget is

only to meet the 15,000 cubic meters ceiling of garbage collected per month.

Dael said that the collection of the remaining 12,000 cubic meters of garbage every month should be the responsibility of huge businesses by providing their own trucks to collect the trash.

Dael called a meeting with Oro Chamber officials

to explain to them that IPM C onstr uction and Development Corporation, which has a locked contract with City Hall, cannot attend to their woes.

He instead recommended that they avail of the services of other private firms such as Basura At Iba Pa which also offers competitive rates to take care of their trash.

Paving opportunities to learn Rugby at the Grassroots

By NOEL VILLA The Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDORFC) joined JCI Kagayhaan Gold in their community outreach activity taking the opportunity to conduct our Get Into Rugby (GIR) Free Clinic so that the kids will learn a new sport and just have fun during the activity, June 10.

JCI Kagayhaan Gold, Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club’s (CDORFC) partner for Rugby development in Northern Mindanao, conducted their "Bag to School" project distributing bags and school supplies to over 300 kids from 4 schools in Brgy.

Mapua and Brgy. Kabasangan in Balingoan, Misamis Oriental.

The GIR is a grassroots program designed by World Rugby that introduces the basic skills of the sport in a fun and playful format with the end goal of kids learning to play Touch or Flag Rugby, a modified version of the sport with no tackling involved. Under the GIR platform, kids learn that Rugby is not a brutal sport, contrary to what most people think. It is actually a fun sport that offers a non-contact version so that kids as young as 4 years old can learn and enjoy playing it. In fact, Rugby doesn't try to compete with other sports but merely offers an option to kids who have limited exposure to other sports.

I brought along two members of CDO RFC Rafters, Chuck Martin Casinabe and Kevin Medina, to teach the kids basic ball passing, running and evasive skills and scarecrow tag drills. Seeing the kids all happy and having fun playing Rugby drills gives me so much pleasure and being able to visit remote places to share our sport also provides an opportunity for us to give back to the community.

CDO RFC has been conducting Free Rugby Clinics all over Northern Mindanao and has taught over 3,000 kids and adults since the Club started in September 2013.

The recent success of the Philippine Volcanoes Men's and Ladies teams during the SEA Games, bagging Gold and Bronze medals respectively, proves that Filipinos can actually excel in the sport of Rugby.

Through grassroots development programs such as Get Into Rugby Free Clinics, we might be able find the future Volcanoes that can represent our country given the right opportunity.

CDO RFC is currently looking for new players who would like to join the Seniors and Juniors Divisions of the Rafters.

Last Januar y 25, this village became the focus of the country’s attention as a bloody encounter between elite police commandos out on a counterterrorism operation and local armed groups took place, almost breaking down the peace process between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

When the smoke cleared, 44 from the Philippine National Police’s Special Action Force, 17 MILF combatants and five civilians were killed. The incident triggered several investigations, including those in both houses of Congress.

Five months later, and two days before the start of Ramadhan, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), the Province of Maguindanao and the Army’s 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division inaugurated and turned over the rehabilitated mosque, which was already dilapidated before work began.

BSP warns public against Phishing scams CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is warning the public against Phishing scams.

Phishing is a form of identity theft whereby someone steals or uses personal or sensitive information of another person without his/her knowledge or permission, through hacking into one’s personal account, hijacking one’s data and taking over one’s online identity, to commit fraudulent acts/crimes, or conduct unauthorized business.

Once the scammers have your information, it becomes possible for them to withdraw money or purchase items under your name, open a new bank or credit card account, use your present account to illegally deal with other people, or encash checks on your behalf.

Scammers may also install computer viruses and worms or

embed them in your e-mail and disseminate more phishing e-mails to other people.

These fraudsters usually send an e-mail with a generic greeting, such as “Dear Customer” or “To Our Valued Client” with an urgent message or content containing a threat such as “Verify your account”, “Update your account,” or “Failure to do so will result in account suspension.”

The message is usually accompanied by a link that, when clicked, leads to a spoofed or fake website which asks you to input your personal and financial information such as User IDs, passwords and account and personal identification numbers.

Scammers may use officiallooking logos and other identifying information from a financial institution or other legitimate organization.

Phishing may be done in various methods other than e-mail, such as text messages, chat rooms, electronic fake banner advertisements or message boards, fake mailing lists, fake job search sites and job offers, and fake browser toolbars.

To avoid being victimized by Phishing scams, the BSP is advising the public not reply to suspicious e-mails and ignore and delete the message.

Do not click any link in a suspicious message and do not give personal and financial information requested through e-mail, the BSP said.

Call your bank instead and send a letter to verify if such e-mail request is real. If you think you have given out information to a phisher, report the incident immediately to the company that was spoofed, the BSP added. (PIA-10)

Iconic motorela highlights SM CDO Independence Day celebration CAGAYAN de Oro City -- “Proud Pinoy” is the inspiration behind this year’s SM Mindanao Malls celebration of the 117th Philippine Independence Day.
