COTABATO City – Concerned government line agencies and local government units (LGUs) are intensifying efforts for the prompt implementation of the long-stunted Mindanao River Basin (MRB) project, which technical experts consider as an ultimate solution to the perennial floods in three southern regions.

At the height of flooding Tuesday in Maguindanao, core members of the MRB Technical Working Group (TWG) convened here to harmonize the plans and fast-track preparations to jumpstart the construction and implementation of both structural and non-structural flood control interventions under the mega venture.

The MRB-TWG is chaired by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of Regions 10, 12, and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), alongside the National Economic Development Authority, the ARMM Regional Planning Office, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as members.

P300M new investments eyed in Misamis Oriental

POL, Misamis Oriental -- About 151 new investors would put up various businesses in this coastal town on the border of Cagayan De Oro City, amounting to a total of P300 million, town Mayor Max Seno said on Friday.

THE Region-10 office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-10), through a Convergence Caravan, recently brought its services and programs closer to the residents of Malitbog town, an interior municipality of Bukidnon province.

The caravan, hosted by Rep. Ma Lourdes Acosta-Alba (1st District, Bukidnon), featured various programs and services of the local government unit and the national government agencies.

DSWD-10 Director Araceli F. Solamillo expressed here gratitude to Acosta-Alba for the activity where the DSWD directly offered its services and programs to the most vulnerable sectors of Malitbog.

The island’s mar ine protected area houses around 200 giant clams, varieties of sea urchins, sea cucumber and all-reef species.

This signifies how significant environment protection and conservation are in the realm of developing the tourism industry of the province.

It must be considered,” the governor stressed.

“These all-reef species

must be protected and conserved. We partnered with different companies and organizations and I thank STEAG for their response,” he added.

After construction, monitoring and safety devices such as radar, life jackets, search lights, and hand held radios will be installed.

Agutayan white island in Jasaan is one of the eight priority tourism sites of this administration. Others include Aya-aya falls in Lugait; Sagpulon falls in Jasaan; Sailfin lizard sanctuary in Jasaan; Alibuag Cold Spring in Medina; Cebu Pacific Flight 387 shrine in Gingoog City; Tugasnon hot spring in Alubijid; and Civoleg Falls in Gingoog City.

Re-construction of Yolanda-damaged classrooms in Cebu nears completion Over 29,000 elementary and high school students affected by super typhoon Yolanda in Northern Cebu will soon be able to get back in the comfort of improved classrooms as the Aboitiz Foundation confirms that its ongoing schools rehabilitation plan is on track with its target completion.

As of end-June, overall project completion is at 66% for the 130 classrooms being repaired and 21% for the 70 that are being

newly constructed in Cebu’s northernmost towns of Bogo and San Remigio, which were among those heavilydamaged by Yolanda in the province.

In B ogo, repairs are 58% complete, while new classrooms, 23% done. Repairs and new constructions in San Remigio, on the other hand, are 72% and 15% completed, respectively.

“The rise of these schools symbolizes Visayas’ renewed hope for a better life for

its children and the future generations,” stressed Aboitiz Fo u n d at i o n M a n a g i n g Trustee and Chief Operating Officer Sonny Carpio.

The Foundation earlier announced that the target overall completion is by October this year so that these classrooms can be turned over by November – a year exactly after Yolanda wreaked havoc in the region.

To date, a total of P164 million of the P254 million donations culled from the

#BangonVisayas campaign, has already been allocated for the Northern Cebu schools rehabilitation program.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the feeds producer said its board of directors authorized its president Ricardo Manuel M. Sarmiento to ask the Regional Trial Court of Bulacan “to declare that the rehabilitation of the corporation has been successfully completed, and to allow the corporation to exit from the rehabilitation.”

“Vitarich is now ready to be competitive again and thereby compete in the market without the protective mantle of a stay

order,” the listed firm said.

In the same board meeting, Vitarich cleared the sale of its property in Marilao, Bulacan to 8990 Housing Development Corp, a unit of listed 8990 Holdings Inc. Vitarich had said it would divest its non-core asset to raise cash so it could settle its remaining debt and exit rehab in “the next year or two,” Sarmiento said in a September 2013 interview.

Impose Price Ceiling on Basic Commodities

P

resident Benigno Simeon Aquino III has been asked to impose price ceiling on the price of rice, garlic and other basic and prime commodities the prices of which have been jacked up artificially by hoarders.

We asked President Aquino to impose price ceiling on the price of rice and garlic, as well as other basic and prime commodities whose price has been artificially jacked up by hoarders, focusing said intervention on traders or hoarders who sell their products at inordinately high price, to detriment of the consumers, the farmers and even the retailers

It is wrong for government officials to protect and defend these hoarders by saying that the jacked up price is normal as a result of lean months.

Since the price is artificial, government must intervene and regulate the price.

T h e Nat i o n a l P r i c e C oordinating C ouncil (NPCC) must impose a suggested retail price pending the resolution of his petition

with Pres. Aquino. Under the Price Act, while only the President can impose price ceiling, the NPCC has the power to impose an SRP on commodities.

A price ceiling immediately penalizes a violator with a maximum of 10 years imprisonment has more teeth than a “suggested” retail price, We have to ask for immediate relief from the NPCC since we do not know how long it will take for Pres. Aquino to intervene

or whether he would even grant our Petition.

We want government to focus on the opportunistic rice traders instead of the farmers or small retailers.

The small retailers do not have the power to manipulate prices all over the country, only big time cartels have that power. We urge Pres. Aquino to crack down on these hoarders once price controls are imposed. We also ask him to abandon his deregulation and liberalization policies and instead strengthen our local farmers and industries while regulating the market against price manipulators who jack.

Proudly Philippines-Made I am an expatriate living in the Philippines for good since 1999. I must confess, that I missed and I am still missing some specials German or European goods and food from time to time. I was very happy and thankful receiving another fully-packed parcel from an American friend living in Germany. Balikbayan boxes from several friends are also always very welcome!

Any w ay, du r ing t he last years of my stay here, I also learned to appreciate Philippine goods and products. It’s ver y sure, that we in the Philippines

are still experiencing some anew roller-coasters, when it comes to global problems at the finance markets. It’s very sure, that banks and other financial institutions benefit from an expected surge in lending still this year by major corporations and businesses. It’s going more and more to be a lender’s market and institutions are expected to make the most of it.

I got caught about this topic several years ago while experiencing the Buy Pinoy Movement Foundation. It has been a trade fair promoting Filipino export products.

I am pretty sure, that it is still the time for Filipino

manufactures to aggressively promote their products not only for exports but for local consumption as well. The certaino-made products! ty of Filipinos losing their jobs abroad is still there as the economy plunges in the wealthy nations. Filipinos should be entrepreneurs and generate jobs and we all should by locally-made products to lessen the impact of more global financial crises on the Filipinos. We should patronize Philippine-made products!

He distinguished himself for his strong stands on the following: 1. Investiture

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is expected to hike interest rates by the end of this month amid the rising inflationary pressures, HSBC said.

Trinh Nguyen, economist at the London-based bank, said that despite the slowdown in headline inflation at 4.4 percent in June due to lower housing costs, food prices remained high.

Another issue that monetary authorities have

“What’s more worrying is the acceleration of credit growth, which rose 19.6 percent in May from 19.4 percent in April, further stoking inflationar y pressures,” Nguyen said.

Because of these factors, HSBC sees that the inflation target range of 2-4 percent (lower than 3-5 percent in

2014) in 2015 being breached unless the BSP tightens its monetary policy to siphon off excess liquidity and dampen demand.

“Production, whether it’s food or electricity, is still short of what’s needed to keep up with rising demand.

El Nino likely exacerbate these supply constraints,” Nguyen said.

SECURITY Bank Corp has raised P10 billion in debt from the sale of Basel III-compliant Tier 2 notes.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Security Bank said the notes will bear a coupon rate of 5.375 percent. They will be issued on July 11.

“Strong market demand enabled Security Bank to raise the target P10 billion,” the lender said.

The offering, which started last June 19, closed yesterday.

The IOUs will mature in 10 years, with an option to buy back the papers in 5 years.

Proceeds of the capitalraising exercise will beef up Security Bank’s capital adequacy ratio (CAR) to support its growth. It is also in line with the implementation of the stricter Basel III requirements implemented by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

Security Bank is the eighth largest bank in the country, with total assets of P377 billion, and is the seventh largest in terms of loans, now at P166 billion.

In the first quarter, Security Bank earned P1.43 billion, 17 percent higher than a year ago, with a return on shareholders equity of 13.8 percent.

PDIC raises P118M from asset sale STATE-RUN Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp.

(PDIC) has raised P118.01 million from the sale of several assets, it said on Friday.

The state deposit insurer said in a statement that the amount was raised from the sale of a total of 21 properties.

Of these properties, 16 were owned by closed banks, while five were corporate assets.

The 21 properties sold were out of the total 186

assets bid out during a public auction last Tuesday.

The assets were sold at an P11.31-million premium as these were valued at an aggregate minimum disposal price of P106.7 million, the PDIC said.

“The properties sold were located in the cities of Caloocan, Parañaque and Pasay; Calamba, Laguna; Tuguegarao, Cagayan; and in the provinces of Camarines Nor te, C avite, C ebu, Ilocos Norte, Pampanga,

Pangasinan, Quezon, Rizal, Romblon and Sorsogon,” it said.

Proceeds from the sale of closed banks’ properties are automatically credited to the funds held in trust for the closed banks concerned, and are used to settle claims of creditors and uninsured depositors.

Meanwhile, proceeds from the sale of corporate assets are added to the Deposit Insurance Fund, the PDIC’s main financing source for

payment of insured deposits.

The PDIC disposes of properties through public biddings, negotiated sales and housing fairs.

As the designated liquidator of closed banks, the state deposit insurer conducts public biddings in accordance with its strategic direction of expeditious disposal of non-financial assets.

Properties not sold during the bidding will be available for negotiated sale or may be bid out again, the PDIC said.

He said that the largest investor is Elpidio Paras, who plans to develop a P 250 million Water Park in the village of Barra here.

The local officials and residents in this fishing and agricultural town of Opol are ecstatic of the prospect’s “economic explosion” once the investors’ businesses start to grind, Seno said.

He said that Opol would certainly offer more jobs and employment opportunities along with the increase of its current Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of P 91 million.

“With the local household enjoying a higher per capita income and with the town’s growing gross domestic income, Opol would become a new growth center in the west coast of Misamis Oriental,” Seno said.

Seno has projected that three years from now, the second class town of Opol would catapult to become a first class town en route to a developing city in the not so distant future.

Opol has 14 villages, most of them are located on the coastline while the six other villages are remote hinterland villages.

Some of the far flung farming villages remain inaccessible due to poor road network, lack of potable water and have longed to be extended with the government’s basic services, Seno said.

“I hope the provincial government would coordinate with the local government unit of Opol in alleviating the plight of the farmers in the town’s mountain villages here,” Seno said.

He said that the coming of the new investors and the expression of confidence by stakeholders would soon change the coastal town’s playing field.

AboitizPower, through subsidiary Therma South, Inc., will start operating its new 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant at the boundary of Davao City and Davao del Sur by the first quarter of 2015.

The company has also presented its geothermal plant proposal to officials of Davao del Sur led by Gov. Claude P. Bautista, but has yet to meet with Gov. Emmylou Talino-

Mendoza and other officials of North Cotabato.

The company, in its presentation before the Davao City council, said the project will allow it to continue diversifying its investment portfolio as it “pushes for maximization of renewable energy potential as long as it is available and affordable, while utilizing fossil-based power generation to ensure reliability.”

The company currently generates 467 megawatts (MW) from its Tiwi-Makban geothermal complex, which contributes the biggest bulk of its 1,191-MW renewable energy capacity.

AboitizPower has started exploring two areas with a combined coverage of about 20,000 hectares, with each area having the potential of generating 100 MW of geothermal power.

One area lies at the boundary of Mt. Talomo in Davao City and Barangay Tico of Magpet town in North Cotabato, while the other is at the boundary of the same city and Davao del Sur, near the hydroelectric plants of subsidiary Hedcor, Inc. The geothermal plant will be handled by another AboitizPower subsidiary, AP Renewables Inc.

CAAP is an attached agency of the DOTC. Hotchkiss, a former Philippine Air Force chief, said the improvement seeks to ensure the safety of airplanes and their passengers.

Currently, only Cebu Pacific Air, Inc. is servicing the island but with passenger weight restrictions due to the limited runway capability of the airport, he said.

“This additional runway will help maximize the flights and hopefully bring in other turboprop aircraft from other carriers,” Hotchkiss said.

Over the past few years, tourist arrivals in Siargao Island have increased, with the CAAP allowing more flights involving light planes via the island’s small Sayak Airport here.

CAAP data showed that last year, 13,188 passengers flew in and out of the island’s airport.

In the first five months of 2014, there were 7,160 passengers compared to the 5,530 recorded over the same period last year, or an increase of 1,630 passengers, it added.

Dona Estrella, Siargao tourism coordinator, said that with the significant increase in tourist arrivals, the destination is now serviced daily by Cebu Pacific “if there are available aircrafts.”

Previously, the airline company plies the Cebu-Siargao air route twice or thrice a week, she said.

After a meeting with the DOTC last month, Estrella said a plan was firmed up to further increase the airport’s runway capability to accommodate bigger aircrafts like the Airbus. “[If realized], we will have flights not only from Cebu but also from other parts of the country,” she said.

Estrella revealed that a

feasibility study is now underway to add another 400 meters to the existing runway as well as the construction of a bigger passenger terminal.

“Travelers usually complain that they would need to take a flight from Manila to Cebu and then another to Siargao. With a larger airport and runway, and with direct flights from Manila, I’m sure this will mean a huge increase in tourist arrivals for the entire island,” she said.

Individual & Company/Establishment nominators shall fill up Nomination Forms available on-line at the Sponsors Website, or the printed page of Businessweek Mindanao and Mindanao Daily issues or may be mailed if requested, from the Awards Secretariat.

Nominees or candidates in various categories shall be nominated by an individual, organization or group or the Local Government Units (LGUs) Nominations shall be accompanied by the ff documents which can be mailed, or emailed to the awards secretariat not later than April 30, 2014.

Brief Resume and History of the Nominee (Individual or Firm) and - Photos (at least 3) ; Nomination Form ; Documentary evidence such as certificates, awards or citations

SELECTION PROCESS:

The Board of Judges shall be composed of known personalities from the Media, Business Community, the Academe, and select government institutions invited by the Awards Secretariat - Entry forms and documents shall be furnished to each of the five judges - Entries shall be published in the BWM & MDB and other newspapers - Results of the Selection Process shall be published in newspapers and other media outlets .

- The achievements of various Mindanao business leaders and entrepreneurs need to be recognized, not only by government institutions and social awards bodies but from the media as well.

- BusinessWeek Mindanao as a forerunner of information on the various business leadership and entrepreneurial strides of Mindanaoans deems it as a part of its social responsibility to trumpet such achievements for others to emulate and thus propel a Mindanaoan consciousness in every economic and business stakeholder, whether small or great, the responsibility to help Mindanao achieve sustainable development of its economy.
