Canadian backing DAVAO City -- Canada announced a 1.25 million Canadian-dollar assistance package to support those living in conflict areas in Mindanao, and will work with civil society partners like Action Against Hunger (ACF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Canadian Ambassador Neil Reeder in an interview said this will contribute to improved food security, health, living conditions, livelihoods and emergency-preparedness to those displaced by conflict in Zamboanga and Maguindanao.

Shift to RE sources CLIMATE Change Commission (CCC) Secretary Emmanuel De Guzman said the Philippines can draw an inspiration from Germany in energy efficiency and use of renewable energy, as the country looks for alternative sources of electricity to create climate-resilient communities. De Guzman, along with CCC Commissioner Frances Veronica Victorio, met on June 28 with German parliamentarian Bärbel Höhn, chair of the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the German jr, who shared her country’s gains in the switch from coal and nuclear power towards renewables. They were joined by German Embassy Charge d’Affaires Michael Hasper and some members of the academe and environmentalists in a luncheon meeting in Casa Roces at the Malacañang compound in Manila.

Wage board releases IRR for Caraga’s minimum salary hike THE Department of Labor and Employment announced that the P12 minimum wage increase ordered by the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity BoardRegion 13 took effect 1 July after the wage order, RTWPC No. RXIII-14, was approved by the National Wages and Productivity Commission on 3 June and its Implementing Rules and Regulations approved. “Minimum wage earners in Caraga, numbering about
70,000 in over 16,000 small and medium enterprises, will potentially benefit as a result of the newest wage increase and from the immediate correction of wages due to the wage order,” the DOLE report said. The NWPC, in its meeting in Quezon City yesterday, approved the IRR of the minimum wage order which, upon effectivity, raises the basic wage in the region by P7, from P268 to P275. Another increase, this
time amounting to P5 in the form of cost-of-living allowance, takes effect on 1 October 2016, thereby raising daily minimum wage rate from P275 to P280 per day. DOLE explained that the new wage order for Caraga will increase workers’ take home pay to P8,514.81 per month for daily-paid workers with work factor of 365 days; to P7,209.59 per month for daily-paid workers with work factor of 310 days; and to hike/PAGE 11
