In an interview with PTV after the State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday evening, Chua said through risk management and implementation of granular lockdowns, the country generated more jobs amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis. “(T)oday, we are 2.2 million jobs more than when…before Covid happened,” said Chua, who is also the director-general of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

THE economies of Cagayan de Oro and Gingoog cities took a beating after health authorities implemented the Enhanced Community Quarantine from July 16 to July 31.

Marawi Sultanate League affirms no dissolution of four barangays

ARAWI City -- Following the stirring issue concerning the alleged dissolution of four barangays in the city, the Marawi Sultanate League (MSL) strongly affirmed City Mayor Majul Gandamra’s issued statement in a virtual press conference that such claim is far from what is true.

During another round of Kapamagusai sa TFBM on Thursday, July 22, MSL Chairman Sultan Nasser Sampaco stressed that the allegation to the government is not even apparent as the administration is even establishing more barangay complexes to aid villages fulfill its mandate.

“Actually, ang nagsasabi niyan ay parang narinig [niya] lang dahil wala namang mawawalang barangay.

Kaya tayo nagpatayo ng mga barangay hall dahil gusto nating paigtingin at palakasin ang function ng mga barangay,” he said.

[Actually, the one who said that just heard it because no barangay will be dissolved. The reason why we constructed barangay halls is that we want to intensify and strengthen the function of the barangays.]

To recall, a certain post was viral on social media after attacking the government for allegedly dissolving four barangays in the city’s most affected area (MAA)

due to the construction of various infrastructures, to wit, Barangays Datu Naga, Datu sa Dansalan, Dansalan, and Sabala a Manao.

Sampaco rebutted as he emphasized that even him, being the Sultan Maamor of Dansalan and a lot owner from Brgy. Dansalan where

BUTUAN City–The strengthened agricultural programs and services implemented under the Duterte administration resulted in an increase in the production of the corn

and palay (unhusked rice) industries in the Caraga region.

Data provided by the Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga) on Tuesday showed farmers

engaged in white and yellow corn production in the region gained an average yield of 3.52 metric tons (MT) per hectare of harvest from 2016 to 2020.

Last year, the total corn production in the region reached up to 157,639.11 MT, the data from DA-13 showed.

Most corn farmers in the region are also engaged in cassava production, providing additional income for their families.

Cassava production in Caraga likewise improved from 17,673.95 MT in 2019 to 19,293.87 MT in 2020, the department said.

Support services provided by the DA to rice farmers in the region also helped raise palay

production in the area under Duterte's term.

Last year, the total palay yield in the region was recorded at 503,330 MT. The total palay harvest, the department said, has also brought the rice selfsufficiency rate of Caraga to 93.29 percent.

“The DA has strengthened its programs and services under the present administration, especially the support to farms by providing them with inputs, such as seeds and fertilizers,” DA-13 information officer Emmylou Presilda told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Presilda added that the use of new technologies and farm mechanization also helped the farmers in Caraga boost their production in the past six years.

Farming modernization From 2016, a total of 3,230 units of agricultural machinery and equipment were released to the different rice and corn farmers’ associations in Caraga under the DA's mechanization program to help them improve their production.

For this year alone, a total of PHP349.1 million worth of farm machinery and equipment were handed over by DA13 to the different rice farmers’ associations and cooperatives in the region.

Among the biggest turnover activities conducted this year were facilitated in the provinces of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Norte and Butuan City.

Last February, the DA13 turned over a total of PHP149.4 million worth of farm machinery and equipment to the different farmers’ associations and cooperatives in Surigao del Sur through the provincial government.

Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz

Today, the nation celebrates her triumph anew, this time at the Tokyo Olympics after winning the country’s first Gold Medal in 96 years).

SHE left the country three weeks ago with nothing but a dream. She went home the other day with a special gift to a nation besieged with controversies.

R io Olympics Si lver Medalist Hidilyn Diaz was warmly welcomed by her countrymen with a heroine’s welcome and attention fit for a queen.

Her ardent prayers and the will to make a mark at the Rio Olympics had made wonders to this 25-year old Zamboanguena.

Hidilyn’s extraordinary feat ended the country’s 20 year drought in the Olympics with a silver medal finish in the weightlifting competition.

After her Olympic stints in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London, trained hard for the Rio Olympics with a simple wish: to win a bronze medal.

“That’s all I wanted – a bronze medal. But God gave me the silver medal,” says the Air Force member, who became the first Filipino female athlete to win an Olympic medal.

She is also the first Filipino

Olympic medalist from Mindanao. The Philippines has won nine medals in the Olympics, all courtesy of male athletes, since it first participated in 1924.

It’s the third silver for the country after boxers Anthony Villanueva and Onyok Velasco win in 1964 and 1996. The Philippines has yet to win the gold.

On top of monetar y rewards coming from private donors, Diaz is scheduled to receive P5 million from Malacanang as her incentive in winning the silver in the Olympics.

A house and lot also awaits for Hidilyn and her poor yet proud parents.

Her journey to fame (and physical comfort in the coming days) can be traced to her place in Mambang, Zamboanga City where she used to carry pails of water, and later with decrepit iron lifts provided by her father who earned their keep by driving a motorized trike for hire.

Hidilyn, the fifth of six children of couple Eduardo and Emelita Diaz will go down in the country’s sports history as the first – and so far the only – Filipina to ever win an Olympic medal.

T h e o n l y d au g ht e r, Hidilyn competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics and was also the youngest competitor in the women's 58-kg category in that same

Olympics.

She was a bronze medalist in the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand and achieved 10th place at the 2006 Asian Games in the 53-kilogram class.

A student of the Universidad de Zamboanga, Hidilyn also won two golds and one silver in the Asian Youth/Junior Weightlifting Championship held in Jeonju, South Korea.

Diaz is expected to receive a P5-million ($106,593) cash reward and other benefits as mandated by law.

The ugly, undisputed queen Think a minute… When she was born in 1874 in the European nation of Hungary, Kincsem did not look at all like a champion racehorse. In fact, she so lacked the strong features of a winner that her owner immediately sold her.

Kincsem became the new owner’s least valuable horse, so he put her in the smallest, darkest stall at the end of the stable. A few nights later a small gang of gypsies stole Kincsem. The thieves were caught and the horse returned to her owner. He asked the gypsy leader why of all his 59 beautiful horses, the gypies had chosen to steal Kincsem?

The gypsy chief answered: “Horses, like people, do not have to be beautiful to be great.”

Interestingly Kincsem’s name means My Fortune.

Yet her size and features were not right for a race horse, especially her skinny hind legs. But in June of 1876, as a two-year-old she ran her first race...and won. No one was more surprised than her owner. Two weeks later she raced and won again!

Ten thousand people watched in wonder as this ugly, skinny mare beat bigger, stronger stallions. There had never been a champion like this before...nor since. Incredibly, Kincsem won every race she QUEEN/PAGE 13

Even with formidable armed forces, a country that has no ecological security is not secured at all. After losing 17 million hectares of natural forest in just a century, there is no stopping now the rampaging waters that wreaks havoc to anything it finds in its path, be it life, limb or property. As the forest ecosystem goes, so goes our ecological security, not to mention our mega-diversity that has evolved for millions of years yet has vanished from the face of the earth in a “wink of an eye” in the evolutionary period.

There is now this brewing outrage against those who have sacrificed Mother Nature to the altar of greed and profit. The logging industry, despite amassing $48 billion (ADB Report) from 19701988, in the same period, it had only contributed from 0.5%-1.3% to the total government revenue. The sins of a few loggers in shameless connivance with those who are tasked to protect the forests, are now visited upon our people.

On December 17, 2011, some 3,000 Cagay-anons died due to the onslaught of SENDONG. As I have been saying before that massive flood, one-inch of rainfall from the 200,000-ha.

Kalatungan Range which for 5 decades had been wantonly and illegally logged by six

logging companies, that oneinch rainfall would be one meter when such reaches the 200-ha. urban center of Cagayan de Oro, meaning 10-inch rainfa l l is t he equivalent of 10 meters. As we were saying when we were taking direct actions, i.e., barricading logging trucks in the 90’s that thousands will die when that happens. But no one was listening. In fact, I was called then “prophet of doom!”

That time, the loggers were in cohort with an agency of government that is primarily tasked to enforce forestry laws. We got the information then that each of the fifty 10-wheeler logging trucks that were carrying illegallycut logs were paying the Check Point about P5,000 per truck. As we were demanding then, all of these trucks must be arrested as there were massive violations of existing laws. It was prohibited then to cut trees in topography that are more than 1,000 meters above sea-level or in hilly areas with more than 50% slope, not to mention the laws that prohibit the cutting of trees that are classified as “hard wood,” i.e., Narra, Almacega, Lauan, Mahogany, etc. All of these trees were logged in these prohibited areas, thus, illegal.

That is not true with regards to the environment. Don’t you know that in one shipment of logs alone, a logger would earn some 360 million pesos.

In fact, out of their rakings, many run as mayor, governor, congressmen or senators and won!

Unknown to many, there is an equally outrageous unrelentless and systematic plunder of our agricultural resource base, a silent war that massacres life forms with subtle impunity, hideous as it is diabolical. If, indeed, the way to hell is paved with good intentions, this is it. It is pursued in the guise of erasing hunger yet it impoverishes farming communities. It is done in the name of food security to increase agricultural productivity, yet, it attacks and destroys our very means to life – our agricultural lands and all micro-organisms and beneficial insects thereat, stripping our soils of its natural fertility.

That agricultural system is anchored on planting cash crops to satisfy the market, increase production through chemical farming using HYVs (high yielding varieties) including GMOs (genetically modified organisms). It subsists through the support of agri-chemical giants and big biotechnology firms.

Their objective is to produce food not for self-sufficiency, not to meet the needs of the local communities but to produce crops with market value to sell in the world market.

Shophouse Revival in Uptown Metropolis

HE shophouse that was so common all-over South-East Asia and the Philippines’ leading urban centers will soon be having a revival in Uptown Cagayan de Oro. The shophouse which did double duty as a residence and business was once ubiquitous in Southeast Asia and also found in Southern China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and as far as Sri Lanka. .

Shophouses were a convenient design for urban settlers, providing both a residence and small business venue, often designed to be narrow and deep so that many businesses can be accommodated along a street. Each building's footprint was narrow in width and long in depth, not unlike those found in modern townhouses.

Traditional Shophouses Traditional shophouses usually have one to three floors. The front of the shop on the ground floor along the street in

most cases is used for commercial purposes as a formal space for customers, with the upper floors intended for residential use.

The ground floor usually serves as food and drink shops, offices, shops, or workshops.

Merchandise was usually displayed in front of the house, and was protected by a veranda from rain and sunshine, and also served as a reception for customers.

If the ground floor included living spaces, these were usually located in the rear with reception, guestrooms, informal spaces for family members, toilets, bathrooms, kitchens, and infrastructure.

The upper part of the house was used as living quarters, usually with an inner courtyard (air-well) midway between the front and rear of the house for ventilation.

“The shophouses in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia tried as much as possible to have the

HE man who went where angels feared to tread and almost singlehandedly willed the creation of what has now become the booming Uptown Cagayan de Oro, recently shared his vision for what lies beyond the post-pandemic horizon.

Development Corporation (PDO), perked up the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc.’s (Oro Chamber) 2nd General Membership Meeting and Induction of New Members on June 22nd, in his response to the unveiling and dedication of the Guillermo D. Luchangco Hall at the Oro Chamber building along P.N. Roa Sr. Avenue in Upper Carmen, and the granting of his lifetime membership in the city’s leading business organization.

“When I first started coming here more than 25 years ago, I was struck by the beauty of the landscape, and I used to tell my associates it was “Marlboro Country”, with rolling hills framed by the mountains in the background, winding rivers and the sea. It was indeed a jewel of an urban community set in the countryside, which meant you could achieve a great combination of business and leisure without leaving home,” Luchangco said.

“Mark my words. This type of life will be the future of the Philippines, the style of community to which many will migrate post-covid. People will look for smaller, less crowded developments but those which have complete facilities to offer, like smaller commercial areas or malls, spaced out leisure and lifestyle areas, green residential villages, all far from the overcrowded public areas and congested streets and traffic jams of places like Metro Manila,” he stressed.

Luchangco described how the covid pandemic unveiled a ‘silver lining’ by thrusting the country into the new age of technology, with employers and employees realizing how it was possible for some to work from home, and how the internet made it all possible.

“Thus, in Luzon, you will see booming communities rising up outside of NCR, going both southward and now, especially with the construction of the skyway above Metro Manila that cuts travel time to the north, also towards Bulacan, Pampanga and further,” he noted.

Head start Luchangco described how Cagayan de Oro is in a unique position to take advantage of this trend because it is already known as a regional center, with good facilities, an international airport, a

major container port, a shipping port that serves more tonnage than Davao, many educational institutions and a thriving business community, all within reach of rolling mountains and hills, scenic landscape and the sea.

“And we must not forget one of its major assets, a lively and friendly population. No wonder it is called the City of Golden Friendship. Not every regional city in the Philippines can claim such attractions!” he exclaimed.

Increasing the Value Proposition “And to put my money where my mouth is, I wish to tell you that, in addition to the billions of pesos Pueblo de Oro has already poured in to Cagayan de Oro, we will now invest here at least P6-7 billion more!” Luchangco disclosed.

“But while we will search for new areas to develop, we will not just do that. We will also seek to re-develop the area we are already in, in order to increase the value proposition for those who invested with us earlier.

By upgrading the present area of Pueblo de Oro, the land and asset values here will also rise,” he added.

The Makati of CDO In addition to additional investments and redevelopment of Pueblo de Oro, Luchangco also revealed how from “Marlboro Country”, he would be leading the charge to further develop the uptown area of Pueblo de Oro township into the “Makati of Cagayan de Oro”.

“Many of you will recall that in the 1950s, Makati was just a barren field, with the old Nielson tower which previously served as an airport terminal, one small apartment building along Ayala Avenue, then Rizal Theater and a supermarket. But look at it now! Rizal Theater has been transformed into the Shangri-la Hotel, Ayala Avenue is full of high-rise buildings, and land in the area is worth around P1 million per square meter!” he exclaimed.

When I first visited here, it was a barren field. Today, it is a booming location, with SM Mall on its north side, and the new Gaisano Mall on its southern rim.

In observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month, Smart has rolled out the #SafePH online caravan now with more fun and exciting activities embedded in the event platform. RDC-X seeks approval for measures to strengthen resiliency of fiber optic networks

THE Regional Development Council for Region X is asking the national government to approve a package of recommendations aimed at strengthening the resilience of the country’s fiber optic broadband networks following a series of incidents which resulted in fiber cuts and interrupted services costing the telecoms and allied industries millions of pesos.

During its 126th RDC-X Full Council Meeting on June 24, 2021, the council endorsed the policy recommendations aimed at “Strengthening the Resiliency of Information and Communications Technology Fiber Optic Networks” to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and concerned stakeholders for their appropriate action.

The said recommendations were presented by Gov. Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano, Chairperson of the RDC-X Infrastructure and Utilities Development Committee, Governor of Misamis Oriental.

In the industry situationer presented

by Gov. Emano, a wide spectrum of risks to terrestrial and submarine cable networks continue to plague the Philippine’s successful rollout of its national broadband backbone and stalled the development of the country’s telecommunications and communications industries.

Terrestrial cables have been pummeled by rodents and other wildlife, construction activities particularly road projects, natural calamities such as storms, earthquakes, landslides and flood that damage underground and aerial fiber optic networks.

“Since last year, we have had several instances where our fiber optic lines were chewed, cut and affected by rodents (rats) which use the palm oil branches for access.

In fact, late last year, we had to replace a 20 kilometer stretch of very expensive fiber optic cable which the rodents chewed on in at least 30 locations in Impasug-ong municipality alone,” Engr.

TV, Inc. reported during the 2nd Quarter 2021 meeting of the RDC-X InfraCom on June 17, 2021.

In the latest reported incidents on July 21, two fiber cut incidents were observed on CDO -Gingoog and CDO to Davao main fiber transport lines. One was caused by people cutting overgrown bamboo trees on the CDO- Butuan highway, and the other was caused by rodents chewing thru the 96 core fiber cable near Quezon, Bukidnon.

“If the four other telco players which also have pole mounted cables are affected, around P3-million a month worth of repair and maintenance costs are estimated. In a year’s time, P36-million in damages caused by rodents which gain access via trees and other vegetation under power/telecommunication lines is possible,” Paras stressed.

Similarly, submarine cable networks face constant threats from natural calamities such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and subsea landslides; underground mining and exploration activities; sabotage by

transnational terrorists and other criminal entities; delays in the conduct of maintenance and repairs by international service providers; and out-ofservice submarine cables which occupy seabed space which might otherwise have been used to lay new cables.

To address these issues confronting the industry, the policy brief recommended the following: During the short term, for DICT to draft and implement an antiobstruction policy to keep telecommunication lines and facilities free and clear of obstructions, dangerous structures, and hazardous activities that impeded the continuous transmission of data.

Similarly, the policy brief recommended that DPWH, DICT and ARTA come up with a permanent policy to streamline the permitting process for the deployment of fiber optic cables.

Not the least, for the DPWH to include the accommodation of utilities underground in its design considerations for public roads and bridges; for NTC to institutionalize a policy for National Roaming; and

for Congress to immediately enact the Open Access Bill.

Over the long term, the policy brief recommends the IECEP to draft and institutionalize and ICT Code; and for Congress to pass into law a policy for the deregulation of the use of satellite technology and amend RA 7925 (Public Telecommunications Policy Act of the Philippines) to provide a policy framework for emerging technologies.

Furthermore, the policy brief likewise recommends the DICT and NTC to establish a Regulatory Framework, including a system for assigning frequencies for the implementation of HighAltitude Platform Systems (HAPS); for DICT to come up with policies that will spur the deployment of submarine cable networks, thereby increasing redundancy and resiliency; and for DICT to draft a policy protecting undersea cables.

A snapshot of the current state of broadband access in the Philippines shows that it currently has ten international submarine cable landing stations which are all

operational, with domestic access facilitated by the DICT Common Tower Initiative, establishment of a National Fiber Backbone Infrastructure, and use of the NGCP fiber optic cable as the main backbone to boost interconnectivity through the Luzon to Mindanao Bypass Infrastructure.

The Digital 2021: The Philippines Report show the country has a 67 percent penetration rate with 73.91 million internet users recorded as of January 2021; 152.4 million mobile connections; USD$ 340-million total consumer spend on mobile apps for the year 2020, and an Average Daily Time of 10 hours and 56 minutes per capita spent using the internet on small devices.

At present, the Philippines ranks 86th among 140 surveyed countries in terms of internet speed, with an average mobile internet download speed of 25.77 mbps, average fixed broadband speed of 32.73 mbps, and 75 percent CMTS coverage in Region X equivalent to 1,524 out of 2,022 barangays.

Chinese Mestizo-dominated Parian district had become the most dynamic commercial area in the city by the middle of the nineteenth century, At the same time, it became more of a suburban residential district rather than a trading ghetto. Parian began to evolve from a commercial to a semiresidential district, evident on the old pictures of the Parian shop houses. Some of the residents of Parian created various businesses and establishments, such as bakeries, specialty shops, theatres and movie houses, printing presses, and hardware stores. These establishments lined the street of Colon, making it one of the most progressive commercial areas of the country.

The Bahay na bato But in the more progressive and urban centers outside Manila and Cebu, esteemed Kagay-anon Architect Edwin Uy said shophouses were often found in the ground floor of the ubiquitous Bahay na bato (or Balay nga bato hereabouts) that was the status symbol of the elite or prosperous merchant middle-class, which integrated the characteristics of the nipa hut with the style, culture and technology of Chinese and Spanish architecture. The 19th century was the golden age of these houses, when wealthy Filipinos built fine houses all over the archipelago.

These were mostly characterized by an elevated, overhanging wooden upperstory nipa hut (with balustrades, ventanillas, and capiz shell sliding windows) and grounded on Spanish-style solid stone blocks or bricks and posts as foundation instead of just wood, bamboo stilts, or timber posts.

They are usually roofed either by Chinese roof tiles, nipa or cogon thatch, and had the bahay kubo's icon features such as open ventilation and elevated apartments used as living spaces, with the ground floor used for storerooms, cellars, REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO

and other business purposes in the traditional shophouse layout.

This type of construction was soon known as the bahay na bato, or as Jesuit Ignacio Alzina calls it, arquitectura mestiza (mixed architecture).

Like bahay kubo, much of this ground level was reserved for storage, or in business districts, were rented out to shops. Horses for carriages were housed in stables called caballerizas.

Bahay na bato had a rectangular plan that reflected vernacular Austronesian Filipino traditional houses integrated with Spanish style. These quaint mixes give the Bahay na bato an architectural style that evolved from both East and West, and thus makes it truly Filipino, as it corresponds to Philippine history of being born through a melting pot of east and west.

Although retaining the basic form, the 19th-century bahay na bato reflected changing tastes through the incorporation of motifs from the prevalent styles such as Victorian.

The Bahay na bato also has several variations along ethnic lines. The Bahay na bato in Cebu, for example, differs from the one in Ilocos, and so on. Today, these houses are more commonly called ancestral houses , due to most ancestral houses in the Philippines being of bahay na bato architecture.

The Cagayan de Oro/Misamis Oriental Tradition Indeed, there is one major difference between the bahayna-bato and the traditional shophouses found elsewhere in South East Asia, Manila and Cebu. The upper residential spaces of the bahay na bato was mostly contiguous and occupied by the extended family landlord/ owners, while those in other countries were usually laid out as self-contained units with the merchant/resident occupying all floors, similar to how presentday townhouses are designed.

In Cagayan de Oro, one of the best examples of the bahay-nabato is the Casa del Chino Ygua at the corner of Hayes and Velez streets, often acknowledged as one of the oldest residences in

UNIQLO Continues to Help Families Affected by Typhoons in the Philippines Manila, Philippines – UNIQLO Philippines, supported by its parent company Fast Retailing Co. Ltd., continues to help the families affected by the typhoons by providing food supplies, clean-up drives, reconstruction of damaged housing, and building preventative infrastructure in areas prone to flooding.

This sustainability initiative will be extended until May 1, 2022.

The project was introduced in November 2020, when Philippines was hit by super typhoons Rolly and Ulysses. Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. donated 1 million USD (approximately 48 million in PHP) and UNIQLO Philippines provided 300,000 pieces of AIRism masks for the aid and protection of families displaced by the typhoons. In partnership with SM Foundation, Inc., the donation was initially used for immediate food assistance to evacuees.

“We are grateful to be welcomed by the Filipino community when we opened our first store in 2012. We would like to show our appreciation by doing what we can to support relief and recovery efforts.

By 2025, the Philippine Development Plan foresees Metro Cagayan de Oro to become the fourth metropolitan center based on projected population growth and role as a major gateway and transshipment hub in the region.

The Master Plan will guide decision-makers in the approval of programs/ projects/activities for i mpl ement at i on i n t he metropolis that are consistent with national, regional, and lo ca l de velopment plans. It aims to improve competitiveness, security, and resiliency from disaster, and general urban conditions.

The plan covers Cagayan de Oro City and its surrounding localities, including El Salvador City and the municipalities of Claveria, Jasaan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Opol, Alubijid, Laguindingan, Gitagum, Libertad, and Initao in Mis amis Or i ent a l, and Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon.

“ T he obj e c t ive i s to establish trends over the years and detect changes in shark abundance and s p e c i e s d i s t r i b u t i o n ,” Songco said in a statement issued over the weekend.

Songco explained that the shark survey will use t h e Un d e r w ate r Vi s u a l Survey (UVS) method, a non-invasive and unbiased approach in which divers swim down the current for 40 minutes while identifying and counting passing sharks within an i mag i nar y 3 0 - me te r transect strip. While the UVS has little to no effect on the behavior of sharks, t he sur ve y ne e ds to b e complemented with other te chniques for a b etter understanding of shark ecology, she added.

Researchers and marine park rangers will conduct the survey with assistance f r o m Wo r l d W i l d l i f e Fund for Nature (WWF) – Philippines, LAMAVE and local volunteers.

Unfair views Perceived to be scary and ferocious monsters of the sea, sharks are unfairly viewed as dangerous to humans, ACB said.

These apex predators, however, play a functional role in the marine e c o s y ste m m ai nt ai n i ng the balance of the food chain, thus ser ving as a sign of the ocean’s good health, it added.

The previous studies on sharks recorded t he presence of 23 species of s h ar k s an d r ay s i n t h e Tubbataha Reefs, the nonprofit stated.

Songco said that based on the movement tracking of the tiger sharks inside and outside the Tubbataha natural park, adults travel out of the park at the end of the summer and return there after a few months.

ACB Executive Director Theresa Mundita Lim said that the shark study, along with lessons learned and further research activities i n t h e p a r k , m ay f e e d towards larger stakeholder efforts to enhance shark conservation measures at the national and regional levels.

“We take note of the collaborative efforts among

the government, nongovernment organizations and academic institutions to fill the knowledge gaps on sharks and other important species in the marine protected area,” she said.

There are 254 species of sharks and rays in the International Union for the Conser vation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species that can be found in the ASEAN, of which 140 are categorized as critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable, according to ACB. Pristine site For the Tubbataha Reefs, it covers roughly 10,000 hectares of coral reef at the heart of the Coral Triangle.

This pristine site is home to a high density of marine species, including 700 species of fish, 13 species of dolphins and whales and over 100 species of waterbirds, data from the Tubbataha Management Office showed.

The information generated from the study will also be used to assess the effectiveness of the park management as sharks are one of its key biophysical indicators, ACB said.

The abundance of sharks has declined over the past decades with more than half of the 39 species now threatened with extinction, according to the IUCN. Tubbataha Reefs is one of the last few remaining places in the Philippines where reef sharks thrive, att r ibute d to t he st r i c t protection afforded to the park and sufficient area to support the movement of the apex predator. Songco noted, however, that local and global stressors such as fishery-related activities and climate change are e ve r- pre s e nt t h re at s to these predators.

Amid these threats, the c ont i nu ous mon itor i ng of shark abundance and species distribution, complemented by other shark studies, will help inform the p a r k m a n a g e m e nt a n d stakeholders on current t re n d s a n d c h a n g e s i n the overall ecology of the sharks, she said, adding it wi l l f ur t her help t he m an age m e nt for mu l ate effective shark conservation measures.
