CE-making machinery, blast freezers, cold storages, and fish processing facilities will soon be established in several coastal areas in Mindanao with rich fishing grounds to boost the island's fishery sector, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said Thursday.

MORE floating solar and hydroelectric power projects are being planned at sites to be selected by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). According to studies conducted by the NIA, a total of 379 sites have the potential to be developed for hydro, thereby maximizing the utilization of irrigation water. Among the potential sites, four are now operational — the 8.5 megawatt Magat River Irrigation System (MARIS) Main South Canal Hydroelectric Power in Isabela, the 1 megawatt Rizal Hydropower Plant in Nueva Ecija, the 1 megawatt Bulanao Mini-Hydropower Plant in Kalinga, and the 500 kilowatt Marbel No. 1 Mini-Hydropower Plant in South Cotabato.

Foods for returnees MARAMAG, Bukidnon -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-10 recently delivered food packs to 104 families of former rebels (FRs) who were sheltered at a temporary halfway house at 88th Infantry “Maringal” Battalion (88IB), Philippine Army Headquarters in Maramag, Bukidnon. The former rebels who belong to Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of Manobo tribe in southern Bukidnon, particularly from Kasilaan and Salumayag subvillages in Barangay Halapitan, San Fernando town thanked the government for the food packs containing some kilos of rice, sachets of coffee, and cans of corned beef and sardines. “Nagpasalamat kami sa DSWD, militar, ug gobyerno kay bisan ila kaming kontra kaniadto, nagasalig gihapon sila kanamo. Daghang salamat sa wala’y hunong nga suporta ug tabang nga gihatag sa gobyerno. (We thank the DSWD, the military, and the government because although we were once their opponents, they still trust us. We thank them for tirelessly supporting us),” Randy Engyan, one of the FRs said.

In a statement, MinDA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the Fisheries PostHar vest and Processing Facilities have been identified by MinDA as among the priority projects to be funded by the PHP2.1 billion grant fund from the European Union (EU), which was approved recently. “I have personally recommended for the inclusion of these projects in the Mindanao Peace

and Development Program (MINPAD) because of the expected contribution to the program to lower poverty, increase productivity and propel the Mindanao economy. In the many trips I made to the different parts of the country, I personally witnessed how precious sea products are wasted because of the lack of simple icemaking machines,” Piñol said.
