Best SETUP adoptors THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) region 10 through the opening of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) recognized and awarded Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) who adopted the department’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). In region 10, Green Pastures Corporation of Misamis Oriental, producer of health supplements and Moringa organic coffee bagged the best SETUP adoptor award. Their Moringa product earns double. In 2013, they earned P10M from merely P4M prior to the SETUP of DOST. President and CEO Reynaldo B. Paraguya expressed the group’s gratitude to DOST, saying that indeed this is a blessing for their company. He said that they started the manufacturing process manually but found the need to upgrade to address the increasing demand of the market.
Irrigation system TANDAG City -- The Provincial Irrigation Management Office (PIMO) under the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Surigao del Sur led by acting division manager Engr. Salome Layasan has continued to maintain and develop the irrigation system in the province. In a report dubbed as Project Status of calendar year (CY)-2012, CY-2013, Quick Response Fund, and CY-2014 Projects, Layasan bared the sum total of P1,241,509,765.52 as direct cost/awarded amount of irrigation projects to Surigao del Sur for the said periods apart from the P23,038,000 project tagged as “needing clearance” and the quick response fund (QRF) amounting to P53,621,000 due to Typhoon Pablo. It was learned that for calendar years 2012, 2013, and 2014, the allotted amounts were P704,443,362.52; P337,312,400; and P199,754,000, respectively.

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) reported recently that total freight on board receipts registered a 15% annual increase to $7.6 billion last year even with devastation wreaked by typhoon Sendong in 2011 and typhoon Pablo in 2012. technology and innovation (STI) whose outcome is toward improved productivity and competitiveness, economic growth and job creation produced one of its
major accomplishments, the Food Innovation Center (FIC) located at the main campus of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST). The key partners who decided to come together to j oi n forc e s are t h e Depar tment of S cience and Technolog y Region 10 (DOST-10), Industrial Technology Development Institute-Department of Science and Technology (ITDI-DOST), Department of Trade and Industry Region 10 (DTI-10), MUST, the Office of Congressman of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City, and the Food Processors Association of Northern Mindanao (FOPANORMIN). Collaborative efforts of the partners will cater to the various needs of the Micro, Small and Medium E nte r pr i s e s ( SM E s ) i n
improving their products and services. Meeting of minds of the key partners was held on April 11, 2014 at MUST Conference Room. The conference served as a forum to level off the expectations of the partners and the industry. The ultimate goal of FIC is to provide assistance to SMEs in terms of starting-up business, development of product standards, services on food packaging and labelling, etc. As a result of t heir c om m it m e nt , D T I h a s provided the following equipment: 1) Vac uum Packaging Machine with complete accessories, 2) Desktop Cap Sealing Machine, and 3) 2-units Continuous Band Sealer. THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) region 10 introduced high impact technology projects particularly on food development during the opening of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on July 8 at Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Thes e are t he Fo o d I n n o v a t i o n C e n t e r, Complementary Foods, and the Packaging and Labeling Center housed in the campus of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the city. The Food Innovation Center which was inaugurated on June 20 is envisioned to be a Center of Excellence in food innovation; a onestop food resource facility and globally competitive food innovation center in developing export-quality food products that are one
of the bests in the world. According to D OST regional director Alfonso P. Alamban, this is foreseen to promote quality and marketability of local food products and strengthen local entrepreneurial activities and the entire food processing in the region and in the country. Meanwhile, the Packaging and Labeling Services Center will cater to the packaging and labeling needs of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in region 10 and the nearby provinces and cities. The center envisions a onestop shop for all packaging and labeling needs of the food processing industry in the region. Typhoon disrupts telecom services THE power outages that came with the onslaught of Typhoon Glenda have disrupted telecom services. Smart Communications staff acknowledged that the widespread outage of commercial electric power in Metro Manila and South Luzon adversely affected mobile and fixed line services in these regions, although the network facilities of PLDT, Smart and Sun Cellular were largely unscathed by the typhoon. Mr. Ramon Isberto, Public Affairs Group Head of Smart, disclosed that “an estimated 15% and 20% of our facilities in Metro Manila and in South Luzon respectively, were affected by the storm. Hardest hit areas were the provinces of Masbate, Sorsogon and Albay.” Isberto explained that the outage, “up to 80% in Metro Manila and 60% in South
Luzon, were caused by the prolonged loss of commercial power. The balance was due to damage to network facilities, particularly transmission links, caused by the strong winds, felled trees and toppled utility poles. “In the case of our mobile phone ser vice, we have compensated for the outage of some cell sites through an overlapping, blanket coverage network design. Generator sets have also been deployed in strategic sites to address the power outage.” In the meantime, the company has set up so-called libreng tawag stations in Baytown Market, Bgy San Isidro, Angono, Rizal, Tonsuya Elementary School, Malabon City, Baseco Evacuation Center Manila, Navotas City Hall, and in Legazpi City in cooperation with the Alagang Kapatid Foundation. telecom/PAGE 10
Nickel Asia ore shipments rise 40% in first half NICKEL ASIA Corp. said ore shipments in the first half rose 40% to 7.73 million wet metric tons (WMT) amid strong demand and prices for the industrial metal. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the company said the value of the shipments was P8.9 billion, up 117% from a year earlier. Ni c k e l As i a s a i d i t obtained better prices after
successfully adopting a China benchmark. As a result it achieved an average price of $41.18 per WMT on sales to Chinese and Japanese clients covering 4.11 WMT of both saprolite and limonite ore. The yearearlier average price was just $21.62. The surge in volume, meanwhile, “was largely the result of increas ed ore deliveries to the high-

reat company cultures don’t happen by accident. C omp a re t h e e nv i a b l e company culture of Google to the notorious company culture of Dish Network. Where would you rather work for? As for me, I would rather work in a company that values creativity and plans for it, that thinks of you as a person and not just a resource compared to a company that is known for long workdays with no holidays off and lots of angry customers. Google made choices from the beginning that created its noteworthy culture. Dish Network didn’t. What about your company? You may not be at Google, but you can now start creating a great company
culture that people will want to work at and give their best to. How? Start by asking yourself these questions: • How can I increase positivity in my workplace? • How can I be more flexible with my employees? • Do I give my staff time to voice their ideas and do I listen? • Does my staff understand our company values and do they share them? • How can I increase effective communication in my office? How you answer these questions will help you d e t e r m i n e w h e re you r company culture stands now and what improvements you need to make. For example, if
you want to increase positivity in the workplace, you might start by offering genuine and specific compliments to your employees. Then, at your next staff meeting, you might mention that you would really like to see more positivity in the office. Make sure you solicit their opinions and ask for suggestions, taking time to listen and follow-up on ideas. Then implement what sounds feasible to you. Consider also asking your staff what they think of your company culture. If possible make it an anonymous survey so that they will be completely honest with you. Ask them about things they like and why they like them. Ask them about things they

ur globe and its population bear innumerable strange facts. Following many people’s opinion, this world shows mostly worried characteristics and symptoms nowadays. No wonder. Just try to consume and digest today’s headlines and news from all around the globe. It is a world with quickly bridged distances - our Mother earth is becoming smaller and smaller. Any tourist, even with little time and with only a small budget, can travel to other faraway cultures. But joing them as well as different races and religious communities requires first of all, great care, tact, instinctive feelings, empathy, and logical ideas.

He may be someone from a foreign country, who speaks another language and whose skin is of another color. He may be a migrant, a restless hiker or the expatriate in our neighbourhood. The foreigner beside you and me can become a provocation or a challenge. Strangeness can become exoticism. Maybe, that’s why my family and I decided to move to the Philippines. On the other hand - going abroad can open other and even better horizons. We must not feel as “a stranger
in paradise”. By the way, I never did! However, a migrant bears a juxtaposition of optimism (even calculated optimism!), confused feelings, nostalgia, and homesickness. Yes guys, during the first two years of my expat’s life, the round trip ticket was always in my mind, because no one among us can escape his native roots. But, I am really a lucky guy. I experienced an amazing tolerance in the Philippines. A real practicing tolerance. Already, during my first business meetings, I met supportive, forbearing and broad minded people. Amendment to CDO’s tourism law pushed By Aida Raut
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY The city’s local tourism board is pushing for the amendment of some provisions of the city’s ordinance on tourism establishments here. City Councilor Candy Darimbang, chair of the City Council Committee on Tourism, said on Tuesday that the amendment intends to reclassify the status of various hotels, pension houses, apartments, and resorts here. She said that the proposed amendment is intended for purposes of registration and licensing and the introduction of new tourism laws. The city’s Ordinance No. 5239-96, known as the Cagayan De Oro City Tourism Establishments Regulatory Ordinance of 1996, where some provisions have to be amended in order to cope with the demands of the time. For instance, Darimbang said, the deluxe hotels should be classified into 5- Star Hotel, first class hotels to be classified
as 4-star hotel, standard hotels to 3-star hotel, economy class hotels to 2-star hotel and budget hotels. In a meeting with stakeholders last week, Josephine Roque, of the Department of Tourism (DOT), here furnished the committee with a copy of the assessment booklet, which shall be provided to all existing accommodation enterprises. Roque said that the material will update and appraise the owners of the hotels, resorts and apartment hotels of the new set of criteria and standard that will be used in the assessment of the establishment’s star rating classification. However, tourist inns, pension houses and motels will still use the old classification system, the tourism committee said. The DOT said that the classification of hotels is represented with the “star point system” where the criteria is divided into seven dimensions to include the arrival and departure areas; public area;
bedrooms; bathrooms; food and beverage, amenities and services and business practices. Catalino Chan, the DOT regional director in Northern Mindanao, said that the DOT would dispatch a team of auditors to evaluate tourism- related establishments in the city in order to ensure compliance of the new guidelines in the renewal of the accreditations. Chan suggested that the new guidelines should be included in the amendment of the local tourism code, especially the provision of, at least, two rooms for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) as well as the strict compliance of the installation of sprinklers, fire exits and elevators, that accommodate two wheelchairs. Darimbang also want the tourism code to compel hotels to have medicines to provide the medical needs of hotel guests, train personnel in basic lifesaving techniques, and hire “on call” medical personnel such as nurse and physicians to attend to the medical needs of hotel guests. Yoly Crisanto, Globe corporate communications head, said the company’s technical personnel are on ground to do immediate restoration of services. Cellsites are equipped with alternate power sources such as batteries and gensets in light of prolonged loss of commercial power. Several cellsite antennas have been reportedly damaged by the strong winds. However, no major infrastructure damage has been reported as of this time. “Our onground technical te am are c ont i nu ou sly prov i d i ng re p or t s an d doing site assessments for immediate service recovery,” Crisanto said. The telecommunications provider had earlier activated regional disaster teams in South Luzon, North Luzon and Metro Manila to also address relief operations and assistance. Globe is also preparing to mobilize Libreng Tawag facilities and relief operations in the typhoon devastated areas. “We will start putting up libreng tawag centers and relief operations in the affected areas as soon as we get the go signal that it is safe to deploy people there,” Crisanto said. In a separate statement, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) said it has deployed gensets to ease the service disruption brought about by ‘Glenda’. “The telecom facilities of PLDT, Smart and Sun Cellular in Metro Manila, Regions 3, 4 and 5 are largely unscathed by Typhoon Glenda, but widespread commercial power outages have disrupted normal services in various areas,” PLDT said. PLDT said key installations of both fixed-line and mobile networks have standby power, but many facilities rely in varying degrees on commercial power. “Prolonged outages will thus disrupt normal services once the internal batteries in equipment run out,” the country’s largest telco said. Given this, PLDT and Smart have deployed generator sets in strategic areas to keep vital facilities operating and speed up restoration of normal service. “We wish to assure the public that we are exerting every effort to restore normal operations as soon as possible. FDC Misamis’ 405-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental upon the start of commercial operations of the project. “The term of the EPPA shall be 25 years from the commercial operation date, unless extended by the grant of grace period; due to a force majeure; or by mutual written agreement by the parties,” the petition stated. The P30-billion coalfired power plant will utilize clean fuel technology and would be adopting the circulating fluidized bed boiler technology consistent with Filinvest’s commitment toward enhanced environmental management. From the commercial operation date, FDC Misamis will supply an initial 30 MW of electricity, which will ramp up to 35 MW starting September 2017. FDC Misamis is a subsidiary of FDC Utilities, Inc., the power and energy arm of the Gotianum-led Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC). “In order to allow FDC Misamis to be able to deliver and Fibeco to be able to receive power from the power plant as soon as it is commissioned, a provisional authority needs to be granted for the EPPA,” the petitioners said. “The issuance of provisional authority will allow Fibeco to charge and collect the respective fees enumerated in the EPPA as well as authorize it to pass on the full amounts to its
consumers,” they added. Fibeco serves the p ower requirements of municipalities of Kitaotao, Dangcagan, Don Carlos, Maramag, Quezon, San Fernando, Pangantucan, Kalilangan, Kibawe, Damulog and Kadingilan; as well as Valencia City - all in the province of Bukidnon. Its franchise area also covers the municipality of Wao in Lanao del Sur. In November, FDC Misamis held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which will be built in the municipality of Vi l l a nu e v a u s i n g a circulating-fluidized bed technology.
