Briefly Online barter TRADE Secretary Ramon Lopez has clarified his recent statement that ‘online barter’ is illegal, saying exchanges of goods for personal transactions, not as business, is allowed. In a text message Wednesday, Lopez said barter trade is only allowed in three areas in the country -- Siasi, Jolo; Sulu and Bonggao, Tawi-Tawi. “Outside those areas, barter trading across borders is not allowed. This is what I meant as illegal if done in other areas, or if done online and cross border and as a regular business, in (the) course of trade and not registered, not taxed,” he said.

Trade rebound THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said yesterday that trade growth is expected to gain momentum in the coming months as quarantine measures in the country ease. In a statement, Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick T. Chua said the slower decline in trade performance in May is a welcome indication that economic activity has started to pick up. The Philippine Statistics Authority had reported that the country’s total merchandise trade registered a slower decline of 38.7 percent in May, after a steep 59.5 percent decline in April 2020.

showed that in almost all urban and rural areas that we have visited the people have followed the guidelines on health protocols – meaning – majority of the populace observed wearing of face-

masks, social distancing and sanitary practices. However, there were areas in some provinces where the local folks ignored the health protocols: One of the eateries we passed by in Leyte said they are forced to open because they have no more income. REPORTS/PAGE 10
