Trade mission DAVAO City -- The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., the Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have set a trade mission to Manado, Indonesia next month to further boost the DavaoGeneral Santos-Bitung RollOn Roll-Off sea linkage.

Minda assistant secretary Romeo Montenegro said the trade mission is part of efforts to finalize arrangement with the Indonesian counterpart for trade activities to support the Davao-General SantosBitung RoRo route which was launched in April by President Rodrigo Duterte and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

“What happened after the launch was the commodities for the front load had not been consolidated yet and they do not have the complete volume coming from Mindanao up to North Sulawesi,” he said.

DELAYS in the improvement of Davao City’s Sasa port are expected to temper the rapid growth of Mindanao’s trade and industry hub, according to the Finance department.

“It wouldn’t derail it but it will certainly slow it down,” Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III told reporters late last week at the Department of Finance headquarters.

Mr. Dominguez, who is from Davao City, said that Davao has been growing rapidly, following the DavaoGeneral Santos-Bitung (Indonesia) roll-on roll-off cargo service that was inaugurated by President Rodrigo R. Duterte and Indonesian President Joko Widodo in late April.

AVAO City — Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCI) trustee Arturo Milan has asked airline companies to make the Davao International Airport, also known as the F. Milan told a press briefing Friday that NAIA must be devolved of some international flights and distribute these to provincial airports like Cebu and Davao because the congestion in the airport in Manila results in flight delays, causing discomfort to passengers.

The Very Best Think a minute…What’s the difference between the best and second best? Between average and excellent? The difference between a good sports team and a great one?

It’s the hard work, training and discipline. You can only get out of something what you put into it. “The enemy of the best is second best.”

Successful people sweat the small stuff and work hard at the details. That’s what makes them successful. But many of us just can’t be bothered to do our very best work.

We look for shortcuts and the easier way to do things.

Our problem is we just want to “get by” with work that is acceptable, but not work that is our very best.

There’s a story about a builder who went on a trip overseas, so he put his manager in charge of building a new house. He told his manager to use only the best materials and not to take any shortcuts to save money or time. The boss wanted this new house to be excellent and the very best.

After the boss left, however, his manager did not follow those instructions. Instead he cheated and kept his boss’ money for himself. He used the cheapest, junk building materials. He did everything

After his boss returned and saw the new house, he told his manager: “Only you and your family deserve to live in this beautiful house. I’m giving this house to you! It’s your new home!”

So how about you? Are you doing your very best in life? At your job? At home?

At school? Are you working hard to be the best father and husband you can be?

Are you trying to be the best mother and wife you can be?

Remember, God gave us His very best: His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. So He hopes that we will give back to Him our very best—not just our second best. Does he deserve anything less? After all, He created you to enjoy His very best. So why not ask Jesus hurst/PAGE 11

You’ve got something sticking out of your nose and you’ve got no idea. You happen to be in a meeting when it makes an appearance in front of everyone, blowing out and back in every time

you breath. Now, there are two people in the meeting.

One who seemed polite, but amused. This person says nothing although aware, once in a while stealing glances with the next person. Then here is the other one who is annoyingly outspoken who points out there is in fact something sticking out of your nose. Which person would you rather commend?

The one who stayed silent, but undoubtedly made fun of your circumstance? Or the infuriating loudmouth who was honest enough to let you know?

Wouldn’t you rather have the bitter pill than the sugarcoated candy? This is knowing that a pill will have alleviating effects than a candy would very well give you diabetes. This situation is a very good allegory for us

in any kind of relationship.

Isn’t that we speak honestly to the ones we love? Knowing full well that it will be for their own good. This is even more so for our relationship as Christians vowing to be involved in CHRIST’s church.

S o, we decide to be possessors and not merely professors of grace. Again, grace does not give us the license to sin. Grace has freed us from sin. Sin is no longer part of the scenario. That is why we need a full-on litany if we fall out of grace, to remind us that Christ is in us. This is for us to participate even better in Christ’s church. We cannot be one body when the other parts are falling apart.

An arm cannot catch a ball if the fingers won’t cooperate, right?

Then do we act like children, no babies, when

our family in the church of Christ tell us on? Of course not. We are mature Christians living in grace. What this means is that when our fellow Christian, brother or sister in the church reproaches us – they are reminding us that we are possessors!

Looking back in the old church, Paul himself, the apostle of grace heavily reprimanded the members of the different churches.

Heavily. With heavy words.

But he did this out of his love, like Jesus, to remind them that like Christ, they are possessors. Today, it is a comfort to know that someone would, out of love, call our attention and tell us that there is something sticking out of our nose.

-ooo M A N Y WAY S O F U N D E R S TA N D I N G D U T E R T E ’ S WO R D S : Indeed, there are many ways of killing a cat, in a manner of speaking. This is not to say, of course, that we should find the many ways of killing a cat. It simply means that there are a thousand and one ways of doing one particular act, or of viewing a particular situation, or of voicing out a particular idea, and so forth and so on.

Which is the same thing to do, when we try to discern the meaning of the statements

given out by President Duterte regularly. We can view those statements as truly serious and needing important consideration, or we can also treat them simply as a way of expressing things or of pulling the attention of one’s hearers, to prevent more harm from happening.

Let me use the example of a Davao City Christian preacher who said that, in Filipino, many parents often tell their juvenile children who are suffering from fever or injuries because of too much exposure in the sun or too much exertion in some physical activity that is seen as useless activity, “go ahead, play under the sun some more”, or, “go ahead, stretch your body all the more.”

-ooo WHEN ONE’S MEANING IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM HOW HE SAID IT: When a Filipino parent say those things to their children, they do not actually mean that the children should really expose themselves to the heat sun more often, or exert their bodies until they are physically bruised. No, they do not mean that, of course.

What they truly mean is

the exact opposite of what their words seem to convey--which is, for the children to be more careful and avoid exposing themselves under the heat of the sun, or avoid physical activities that would hurt their muscles and make their bodies sore.

This, to me, is the way to appropriately discern President Duterte’s oftthe-cuff remarks, like his claim that he didn’t want any corruption in his presidency because when he was mayor of Davao City he already stole much government money but that he had spent all of them by now. We should be able to see the parental twist in his statements to truly understand what he means.

-ooo CRITICS ARE ALSO SUBJECT OF A C C U S AT I O N S OF CORRUPTION: Unfortunately, this does not seem to be understood in this manner by the many critics of President Duterte, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in particular. The impression these critics give, when they criticize the President with his off-tangent remarks is that, they are not disposed to recognize in any way the

possibility that Duterte may actually be talking in jest or in riddles.

It wou l d have b e e n alright if the critics are not themselves the subject of accusations of corruption and wrongdoing. The problem is that, even a mere haphazard search through Google will already yield juicy bits of voluminous information about what a particular critic received as bribe or as grease money, at one time or another.

For example, in a Facebook post of Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol, it was alleged that Trillanes received money from Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and from Sen. Jinggy Estrada, and was involved in other “transactions” with other big-time politicians. Truly, this can only make me puke!

Subjective candor, objective truth hints and traces

On these occasions, I needed to pause for a while before slowly explaining to them that while acting on the basis of their feelings and understanding of things certainly have some value, it is not enough. In fact, it can be very wrong.

God’s commandments, which is what loving actually entails.

In that gospel, Christ reassured us that he would never leave us orphans. He will always be with us and would even manifest himself to us in the Spirit, as long as we love him by following his commandments.

This is a piece of Good News that we need to spread around more widely, because many people are of the belief that especially in matters of opinions, like in business and politics, they do not need to refer themselves and things in general to God. Ford Philippines says June sales up 17%

R

ETAIL SALES of Ford vehicles in the Philippines rose 17% in June, the US automaker said on Tuesday.

In a statement, Ford Philippines said sales surged by an annual 17% to 3,273 vehicles in June, driven by robust demand for Everest, EcoSport and Ranger models.

The June performance helped Ford Philippines reach a record quarterly performance, with retail sales of 8,922 vehicles during the April to June period.

“The wide popularity and strong appeal of the Everest, EcoSport and Ranger are continuing to drive our sales momentum this year,” Lance Mosley, managing director of Ford Philippines, was quoted as saying in a statement.

Ford Philippines said sales of the Everest sports utility vehicle (SUV) jumped 8% to 1,139 vehicles in June, bringing total year-to-date sales to 5,768 vehicles.

On the other hand, the EcoSport compact SUV recorded a 15% rise in sales

to 984 units in June. This pushed year-to-date EcoSport sales 20% higher to 5,225 vehicles.

Also in June, sales of the

Ranger pickup truck surged 40% to 880 vehicles, lifting year-to-date sales up 16% to 4,596 vehicles.

The company’s North

American-built models also saw strong demand. Sales of the Explorer SUV increased 57% to 137 units in June, pushing second quarter sales

47% higher to 353 vehicles.

The Mustang sports car saw sales of 69 vehicles in June, bringing quarterly sales to 124 vehicles.

DOF studying Mighty Corp.’s settlement offer PHINMA Energy to hike S E C R E TA RY C a r l o s Dominguez III said the Department of Finance (DOF) is now studying the offer of Mighty Corporation to settle its tax liabilities

by July 20 for P25 billion, covering the deficiency excise taxes and internal revenue taxes of the company and its shareholders.

Dominguez pointed out, however, that the settlement offer of Mighty Corp. for its tax deficiencies is separate from the criminal charges that might be filed in court by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) against the company.

Three tax cases filed by the BIR against Mighty Corp. are now pending before the

Department of Justice (DOJ).

These cases cover the firm’s non-payment of excise taxes due its cigarette products and use of counterfeit tax stamps on its cigarette packs, which correspond to excise taxes valued by the BIR at a combined P37.88 billion.

“We are studying the offer,” Dominguez said of the written settlement proposal sent by Mighty Corp. to BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay in a letter dated July 10, 2017.

The letter signed by Mighty Corp. President and Director Oscar Barrientos, said that it was confirming “the Company’s willingness to settle all such excise and tax issues and respectfully offer as settlement of the

Company’s shareholders’ and its officers’ liability in this regard the total sum of P25 billion.”

Barrientos said in his letter that this settlement sum would be funded by means of an “interim loan” f rom J T Int e r n at i on a l Philippines (JTI) and the sale by Mighty and its affiliates of its manufacturing and distribution business and assets, along with the intellectual property rights associated with these assets, “including those owned by the company, Wong Chu King Holdings Inc., and other affiliates to JTI or any of its affiliates for a total purchase price of PHP45 billion exclusive of VAT.”

Based on its settlement offer, the total amount that Mighty Corp. would remit to the government include: 1) P 3 . 5 b i l l i o n i n deficiency excise taxes on its cigarette products that are now the subject of the three tax cases pending before the DOJ; and 2) P 2 1 . 5 b i l l i o n representing the liabilities of the company and its shareholders, as well as the company officers for all internal revenue taxes, including income tax from 2010 to 2016 and the tax period up to the closing of the proposed transaction with JTI, and all transaction taxes related to the agreement with offer/PAGE 9

power supply in Visayas

PHINMA Energy Corporation will be augmenting power supply in the earthquakestricken domains in the Visayas grid by close to 40 megawatts from its power barges that could be deployed into the area.

This will be in response to the request of the Department of Energy (DoE) for the company to help in the immediate provision of power supply in Leyte, Samar and Bohol that have been technically “plunged into the dark” after last week’s hit of natural disaster.

According to PHINMA

Energy President Fancisco L. Viray, the company could deploy their power barges of four generating units with 5.5MW capacity each; and another barge of three generating units with the same 5.5MW capacity each.

Trade deficit widens to $2.75B in May or the sum of a country’s total transactions with the rest of the world, registered a deficit of $318 million, which is equivalent of 0.4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

In the same period, BOP posted a deficit of $994 million, higher than the $210 million deficit same period in 2016.

Last May, the central b a n k’s p o l i c y - m a k i n g Mon e t ar y B o ard ( M B ) slashed the BSP’s 2017 CA assumption to $600 million deficit from an assumption of $8 million surplus on account of the strong rise of imports.

The BOP assumption for the year was also cut to $500 million deficit from USD1 billion surplus previously.

The latest assumption accounts -2 p ercent of GDP while the previous assumption is at two percent of GDP. L a s t May, t h e B O P registered a $59 million deficit, bringing the yearto-date level to $136 million deficit.

Espenilla said the latest trade deficit of the country w a s “n ot a s u r pr i s i n g outcome” given the impact of what the country bought and sold overseas.

THE Philippines posted a trade deficit of $2.753 billion in May 2017, higher than the $2.24 billion deficit a year ago. This after imports grew by 16.6 percent last May, higher than the 13.7 percent rise in exports.

PSA data show that metal products, transport equipment and iron and steel represent the highest imports of the country last May. These rose year-onyear by 44 percent, 37.9 percent, and 35.2 percent, respectively.

Economic and monetary officials have traced the strong rise of the country’s imports to rising demand of the Philippine economy.

the rise in imports “is actually reflecting potentially healthy conditions.”

“You have to look at what imports are coming in. Capital goods imports support a growing economy.

And the economy is growing very strongly at this point in time so this isn’t unusual that imports will be growing,” he said.

On the other hand, the strong growth of imports resulted in the decline of the country’s current account (CA), which refers to the totality of balance of trade (BoT), the net income from overseas and net current transfers.

BPI FAMILY Savings Bank, Inc. is looking to grow its bottom line by a tenth this year, a slight increase from last year’s figure, as the lender is currently streamlining its processes to manage risks as part of a wider bid to double its overall businesses in five years.

The thrift banking arm of Ayala-led Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) said it eyes a softer expansion in its net income by end-2017.

“For this year, we’re projecting a slower growth of about 10%,” BPI Family Savings Bank President Maria Cristina “Ginbee” L. Go said in a briefing on Wednesday when asked for the lender’s outlook for the year.

The thrift lender saw its net income reach P4.4 billion in 2016, up 5% from P4.2 billion the previous year.

Chat fiction apps allow users to read in a format that they know very well – text messaging. Stories are short and fast-paced in the form of a text conversation where there is participation by the reader. The details engage both sides of the brain as readers interpret the images and the words.

In order for students to understand better what they’re reading, they must be fun after all. It also advances children’s skills. For younger kids, reading out loud is highly encouraged.

Are my learning materials and strategies suitable and effective for my pupils?

T h i s qu e st i on a lw ay s pops up in my mind every time I deliver my lessons.

Teaching the indigenous children (Higaonons) is a big challenge for teachers assigned in the hinterland school like me.

I have been experimenting on some techniques to make learning more fun and effective. As observed, pupils participate well if I am using materials which are found in their own environment and used in their daily lives. If I do not, they are passive in the classroom. RA 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 states, specifically in section 10.2, that the curriculum should be contextualized and global. The government

spends more money and efforts just to cater the minority groups of our society and one of them are the Lumads or the Indigenous People (IP).

Research based strategies (contextualization and localization) are proven effective to the Lumad learners. I strongly agree with this, instead of using pentil pens, cartolinas and chalkboards a teacher can utilize the outside environment to ma ke learning more hands-on and comfortable for the learners.

Using just the four corners of the classroom limits their potential. The purpose of education is to apply the learning in our daily lives.

C ontextualization and localization are strategies which allow the IP learners practice their own skills for their survival.

HE city government of Cagayan de Oro led by Mayor Oscar Moreno turned over to the City Schools Division of Cagayan de Oro last Wednesday a 46-classroom fourlevel building it constructed within the Bugo National High School premises.

“With firm conviction that education is the great equalizer – empowering the underprivileged and alleviating them from their marginalized conditions. With great confidence that education can and will change the quality of a person’s life and more importantly his family, community, the City and the

Nation,” read the dedication at the marker that was put up in the building façade.

The construction of the building was funded by the city’s Special Education Fund, according to city government spokesperson Maricel Rivera.

Housing a total of 2,022 junior high school students, the opening of the new building will mean decongestion of classes which was the aim why City Hall decided to put up the structure which is the second biggest schoolbuilding that the Moreno

administration has constructed.

The turnover rite was also witnessed by City Schools Division superintendent Elena M. Borcillo, Councilors Suzette Daba, Ma. Lourdes Gaane, Jay Pascual and Teodulfo Lao; and Bugo barangay chair Jesus Morial.

In a controversial move to optimize space for cargo processing, the PMO let lapse all leased areas within the port proper used by shipping firms as container yards effective January 2016, resulting in a gain of 18,224 sq.m. without constructing a new back up area.

“Thus, while the wharf extension and reclamation was ongoing, we instantly had a surplus area that we developed as a back-up area for container handling.

By dedicating Berths 8,9 and 10 exclusively for container handling, we increased containerized cargo throughput resulting in revenues which more than made up for the foregone revenues from leases of shipping companies. From a 50/50 ratio of container vs. conventional cargo packaging ratio, the port is now looking at a 70/30 ratio that is still increasing,” Butaslac said.

The port has also upgraded

its capacity to move containers as well as expanded the area to accommodate containers.

Food Security Forum in UP Mindanao

Last July 6, a significant and important Media Reception Forum on Food Security and Sustainable Development was hosted by the UP President for the Agriculture and Biochemistry Beat Reporters held at the Mini Theater, Administration Building UP Mindanao Campus.

Vice President for Public Affairs Jose ‘Butch’ Dalisay delivered an important message for the forum from UP President Danilo Concepcion whom would have been interested to hear the talks as a man of science having been an agricultural engineer before becoming a lawyer.

With the onset of the economic boom and development of Mindanao and it’s impact to Mindawanons, the forum coupled with the presentation of researches for food security and sustainable development is aimed to bridge the gap between the academe and the general public VP Dalisay further said.

Three UP Mindanao known and award winning researchers presented their project to the forum: Dr. Juma Novie Alviola presented “Utilization of Sago Flour to improve Nutritional Profile of Selected Food Products”; Dr. Emma Ruth Bayogan “Post harvest of Pummelo Fruit treated with Chitoan and 1 Methycyclopropene”; and Dr. Cleto Nanola “Exploring the Connectivity of Reef Fish Populations along Eastern and Southern Coast of Mindanao”.

Their researches are part of the Mindanao Studies Research Initiatives which launched in an effort to forge a research agenda that builds on the University’s development goals of Mindanao. The researches aimed to

have an impact on the economy, the environment, and the people of the island through research on food and agribusiness systems, natural and built environments, and Mindanawon art, culture and society.

The sago palm has become an object of many researches due to its potential for Enterprise development in Mindanao. The University has supported a multidisciplinary program to study the Sustainable utilization and conservation of sago, the importance of the palm to the life-world of Filipinos in the past and the present as well as the possibility of of commercial propagation of the palm to produce industrial products.

Thus the study: Utilization of Sago Flour to improve Nutritional Profile of Selected Food Products of Dr. Juma Novie Alviola. The study focused on flours from Sago, kamote, rice, munggo, cardava and wheat. The study focused and considered the prices, and the combination of glutens carbohydrates, proteins, fiber and antioxidants for the best nutritional values. Furthermore, mentioned are the uses of sago starch for lactic acid, cosmetics, glucose and animal feeds and of sago palm to alleviate global warming and climate change.

Great Researcher Professor Emma Ruth V. Bayogan presented the study “Post-harvest of Pummelo Fruit treated with Chitoan and i- Methycyclopropene.

The study presented aims to reduce crop losses---that averages about 35 percent of farm produce by using low cost compounds. She further stressed that Pummelo being abundant in the Davao Region and being a high value Crop had much longer shelf life and

maintained fruit quality and sweetness and juiciness after being given the right measure of the environmentally friendly compounds.

One of the leading researchers in the country Professor Cleto Nanola, Jr., presented “Exploring the Connectivity of Reef Fish Populations along Eastern and Southern Coast of Mindanao”. The species include the nutritious “isdang bato” the damsel fish, greenblotch parrotfish and surgeon fish found in the coral reefs of Saranggani Bay, Davao Gulf, and Pujada Bay. At the rate of the dwindling population of these popular species for food fish security the study recommends fishing regulations that would limit commercial fishing to fully grown fish species and the protection of coral reef in order to avoid depletion the local fish population.

An open forum followed and on the part of study of Sago and commercial its advantage and supply and per information a study on the commercial planting of Sago palm is underway to support the commercial usage of sago.

Other concerns and queries were given attention for the sustainability of the projects being presented.

Flights are delayed because you cannot just put them in one airport, all (passengers) keep coming. It will certainly affect the flight schedules,” he said.

Milan believes there is a market for Davao-Australia route because many tourists would want to visit a tropical country like the Philippines during winter season.

He said Australia is located just below the Philippines on the global map.

“There should be a flight emanating from Australia that will go to Davao because you are making a route that is attractive to foreigners.

Australia by itself has too many tourists,” he said.

He said Western tourists either go to Bali, Indonesia or Palau in the Micronesia.

Both are closer to Davao in terms of proximity.

He said reviving the Manado-Davao flights would also help sustain the DavaoGeneral Santos- Bitung, Indonesia roll on/roll off (RORO) that was launched in April.

“For RORO to be sust ainable, we shou ld encourage the revival of the flight of Davao to Manado and back because I don’t think if you invest or you trade you don’t wanna see the area,” he said.

He said the direct flight to Manado will also make transactions between In d on e s i ans an d t h e i r counterparts from Davao to discuss business deals.

On June 15, Milan urged the House of Representatives to pass into law House Bill 2002 which seeks to create the Davao International A i r p o r t Au t h o r i t y t o decentralize management of the airport from the national government to enable a faster implementation of development programs.

He said the management of the airport cannot implement projects on its own because it is dependent on the national government.

He said the government can replicate the model of Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority “to make Davao City airport inviting” to both tourists and business executives visiting the city.

Once approved, he said the “authority,” a body that will take over the management, can immediately plan out development projects and implement them on its own.

The F. Bangoy International Airport, also known as the Davao International Airport, is currently being managed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

“When it is ‘authority’, the Davao International Airport will have flexibility rather than the current set up where you depend so much on the national (office). It’s really a must now, if we want a more responsive Davao airport,” he said.

“We need to upgrade

our airport because it is where the first contact of the investors is. They need to have a good impression of our region by way of our airport terminal. We are pushing to improve airport.

A letter from a concerned citizen, sent to the office of Misamis Oriental Provincial Board Jose Mari Pelaez, has accused the town’s water provider of orchestrating the outbreak.

The epidemic, which started last June 29, affected 452 residents in four of the 19 villages in Medina, a town of over 32,000 people some 60 kilometers east of Cagayan de Oro. As of July 13, only 29 persons have been admitted at the local medical facility for diarrhea.

Based on the 2015 data, Medina has a total population of 32, 907 residents.

At the height of the outbreak, two people had died, although only one was related to diarrhea. The other died from a heart illness.

Mendoza said majority of the cases occurred in two villages, in North Poblacion and South Poblacion. Many residents in the barangays of Cabug and Maanas also suffered from diarrhea.

It’s possible that bacteria from human or animal wastes and runoff of contaminants from the highland or sea were

cutting off the distribution lines that were identified to have been contaminated as well as ordering Merwasco to conduct regular flushing of its pipes.

Merwasco is serving 11 of the town’s 19 barangays with about 3,200 memberconsumers.

The mayor has als o instructed residents to boil their drinking water before consuming it. Aside from that, the local government has initiated the putting of chlorine to other water sources such as dug wells.

“We have done our best to address the problem,” Chan said during the committee hearing.

Plan, PCS-10001089, being a portion of Lot 3507-B to E (LRC), PSD-211999), situated in the Barangay of Igpit, Municipality of Opol, Province of Misamis Oriental, Island of Mindanao, containing an area of One Hundred (100) sq. m. more or less.xxx All sealed bids must be submitted to the undersigned on the aboved stated time and date.

In the event auction sale cannot take place for whatever legal reason, the same will proceed on the following working day, without further notice, posting and publication.
