Airport rehab THE mothballed airport in M’lang, Cotabato will need at least P2.6 billion to rehabilitate and put into operation, according to the Mindanao Development Authority (MiNDA), citing an assessment from the Department of Transportation. In a statement last week, MinDA chairman Emmanuel F. Piñol, who was Cotabato governor when construction of the Central Mindanao Airport Development Project was started in 2004, said the facility will provide a logistical boost to the agriculture sector in the SOCCSKSARGEN Region, which covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, and General Santos City. “The airport, which has capability for commercial flights, is primarily intended to support transport of agricultural products from the region,” Mr. Piñol said.

Sorghum program DAVAO City — A sorghum program will be launched in Mindanao next year, starting with indigenous people (IP) communities and parts of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) announced last week. The program will be jumpstarted by the 25 metric tons of sorghum seeds donated by American firm Scotts Seeds Co., which is expected to arrive in Davao City by February. In a statement, Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol, MinDA chair, said the propagation of “sorghum in Mindanao, a grains crop and very rich in protein, is expected to boost the livestock and poultry sector, including Halal meat and poultry production.”

ORE than P3 million from the proceeds of a power generator, which was shared to the Misamis Oriental provincial government, will be spent to build a tourism destination site in Claveria town. Lawyer Jeffrey Saclot, provincial tourism officer, said the construction of the Misamis Oriental Agriculture and Tourism Complex will start in the first quarter this year after the bidding process has been completed. The facility will stand in the area of Flight 387 Memorial Shrine, a patch of land dedicated to those who perished when a Cebu Pacific airplane crashed on the slopes of Mount Sumagaya in Gingoog City on Feb. 2, 1998.

Families and friends of those who died in the crash frequent the memorial shrine and not long after people started visiting the site making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province. Saclot said the complex will house a flower farm, camping site, fruit stand, a bridge, coffee shop, function rooms and other amenities, which is expected to attract more visitors to Misamis Oriental.
