ISO standard

OROQUIETA City -- The International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001:2008, a standard for products and services, is being revised to come out as ISO 9001: 2015, by the end of the year.

This was revealed by Kevin T. Castillon, from Anglo Japanese American (AJA) Registrars, Inc, an ISO accreditation agency, in a recent seminar in Cagayan de Oro City, attended by some 100 employees of the Department of Trade and Industry, region 10 (DTI-10).

Castillon said that ISO 9001: 2015 which will replace ISO 9001: 2008 will focus more on risks, how to detect and avoid them and could be a preparation for the upcoming economic integration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

He said that those who have already adopted ISO 9001:2008 will be considered in transition for the new standards until 2017 when the old standards will be abolished in favor of 9001:2015.

Samal bridge DAVAO City -- The Davao City-Island Garden City of Samal bridge project will still have to wait a little longer as the National Economic Development Authority waits the result on the feasibility study on the project.

Ma. Lourdes Lim, director of the NEDA 11 said the Davao Integrated Development Program-Project Management Office already completed the revision of the term of reference of the project and submitted it to the Department of Public Works and Highways national office.

She said the DPWH is currently advocating for the project’s inclusion in the Philippine Development Program so that the feasibility study will be funded.

State-run weather agency Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecast Caraga to likely experience 50 millimeters to 300 millimeters of rainfall inFebruary 2015’s first 10 days.

DIGOS City – The 2015 Annual Investment Plan (AIP) of this province has been approved with more than P2.233 billion budget to support the operations of the local government units in the province, including Davao Occidental.

Part of the entire budget plan is the list of development programs and projects as well as the total resource requirements for the year, personal services, maintenance and ot her operating expenses and capital outlays both for the executive and legislative line offices.

The breakdown includes

social sector services in the amount of P346,641,994; economic sector services including infrastructure sector which is pegged at P1,487,410,624; general public administration sector P291,360,535 and other services including the economic enterprise at P197,966,633.

DTI monitors price decrease of some commodities in Zambo City ZAMBOANGA City -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced that the prices of some commodities in this city have decreased by as high as 4.65 percent.

“Per our monitoring, we noticed a decrease in the prices of milk ranging from .8 percent to 2 percent translating to P.50 to P2.00 per 300 milliliter (ml) can,” Eng’r. Rolando Acuña, DTI provincial director, said Friday.

Specifically, Acuña said that Alaska milk decreased from P53 to P52, Milk Maid from P64 to P63, and Carnation by P.50.

Ac uña a ls o note d a decrease in the prices of sugar by 4.65 percent, with one-kilogram (kg) of brown sugar decreasing by P1 and white sugar by P2.

The biggest price drop monitored by the DTI was noted in the prices of steel bar, according to Acuña.

“The biggest decrease is in the prices of steel bars. The price dropped from 2 percent to almost 10 percent,” he said.

He said the decrease in the oil prices is one of the factors that contributed to the price decrease of some of the commodities.

“It is one of the factors that contribute to the price

decrease, the other being the stiff competition among manufacturers. There is a healthy competition among them by offering lower price,” he said.

“Another reason is the price of components or ingredients used to manufacture products.

We have noted a decrease in component price,” he added.

Acuña said prices of other commodities regularly monitored by the agency remain stable and well within the suggested retail price (SRP).

However, Acuña pointed out that they will have to review the existing SRPs for possible adjustment with the continuing decrease in oil prices.

“With this scenario, DTI needs to review our prevailing SRPs to validate if the improved oil price warrants a price decrease. Again, we also have to consider other factors other than the oil price,” he explained.

“First, companies and producers submit their proposed SRPs. DTI will then review, check, and validate it.

We will now see the cost of component and see whether their computation is properly done. Their selling price plus their profit margin, will now give you the suggested retail price,” he expounded how they come up with SRPs. (PNA)

Northeast monsoon or ‘amihan’ is the weather system that will affect the country during the period, PAGASA said.

According to PAGASA, widespread cloudiness with rains and showers characterize ‘amihan’ which affects the Philippines’ eastern portions from October to late March.

‘Amihan’ starts over Siberia as cold, dry air mass but gathers moisture as it travels across the Pacific Ocean before reaching the eastern sections of the Philippines, said PAGASA. (PNA)

Indophil delists from ASX after Alson’s takeover INDOPHIL Resources NL -- a key investor in what is potentially the biggest foreign direct investment in the country, the Tampakan gold-copper project -- has been formally delisted from the Australian S e c u r it i e s E xchange (ASX) after being acquired

by Philippine-based Alsons Group.

In a market release, the ASX announced that Indophil was removed from its official

list at the close of trading on Friday last week, Jan. 30.

The move was done “following the implementation of a scheme arrangement w he reby A ls ons Pr i me Investments Corp. (APIC) acquired all of the ordinary shares in the company.”

You know, when we choose to stay angry and hold a grudge against someone, we believe the lie that our being right is more important than our being happy and healthy.

But it’s not! The only way to be at peace in your own life is for you to forgive others. You be wise and strong enough to be the one to apologize, even if you’re older. You be the peacemaker and take the first step.

Yet sadly, many of us would rather boil in our anger because we feel the other person was wrong and they owes us an apology. You see, maybe we were right. But life’s just too short to wait for everybody in life who has wronged us to finally come to us first and apologize. It just isn’t going to happen that way. So the sooner we swallow our pride and be

That’s exactly what God the Son, Jesus Christ, did for you and me. We are the ones who wronged and rejected God, yet He still loved us enough to humiliate Himself by becoming a human being to live and die for all our wrongs against Him and others. He did it so you and I could be at peace with him both now and forever after we die. He did everything for us.

All we have to do is ask Jesus for His gift of forgiveness and new life. You see, it’s only when we ask Jesus to take charge of our heart that we will have His love and strength to be the first to forgive and make peace, so we can enjoy a happy life with our family and friends.

Today, won’t you ask Jesus to give you His power to be a peacemaker—before it’s too late?

Battles that changed the course of history (5)

I

n the previous article, we narrated the pincerlike offensive used by the Allied forces as they pushed toward Manila. Allied forces came from the north via Lingayen, and moved swiftly southward. Along the way, the Allied forces freed POWs in Cabanatuan and retook Clark Air Base. (For easier recall, we will refer to this group as the Northern Force).

As they moved closer to Manila, the Northern Force disposed of light opposition in Pampanga, and Bulacan and secured the Balara Filters at the city’s outskirts.

On February 3, 1945, (Day 1 of the month-long Battle of Manila), the Northern Force captured Malacanan Palace and started the liberation of the Santo Tomas Internment Camp.

When the war broke out, the Japanese rounded up around 4,000 American civilians and other foreign nationals in Manila and confined them in Santo Tomas. They were later joined by the “Angels of Bataan” (US nurses) after Bataan fell.

hostages. After two days, the American hostages were freed in exchange for safe passage of the Japanese guards.

On Day 2, the Northern Force freed American POWs (all former C orregidor defenders) in Bilibid Prison on Oroquieta Street. The Allies did not have to fire a single shot. The Japanese guards had earlier abandoned Bilibid.

As the Northern Force moved closer to the center of Manila , the Japanese started blowing up the six bridges spanning the Pasig River. The Japanese put up a strongerthan-expected resistance at FEU, which controlled the approach to Quezon Bridge. As a consequence, the Allies failed to save this last remaining bridge from being demolished on Day 2.

With all the bridges gone, the Northern Force were temporarily stalled on the north bank of the Pasig. It was not until Day 5 when the Allied troops were able to continue their advance by using assault boats. In the meantime, the Allied troops used artillery against selected Japanese targets across the river.

O n D ay 7 , F i l ipi no resistance fighters cleared Mandaluyong of Japanese stragglers and declared the town liberated.

From the south, troops

made an amphibious landing in Nasugbu (Day Minus 3 ) while paratroopers jumped onto Tagaytay Ridge (Day 2).

(We will refer to this group as the Southern Force).

The S outher n Force then advanced northward towards Manila, bypassing lightly defended Japanese positions in Imus, Las Pinas, and Paranaque. The Hunters ROTC guerrillas liberated Muntinlupa on February 4 (Day 2).

The Southern Force then moved to secure Nichols Field (Day 5) Camp McKinley (Day 6) and Nielson Field (Day 9) . By Day 8, most of the Japanese in Nichols and McKinley had started to retreat to the hills east of Manila.

The S outher n Force later faced well-entrenched Japanes e tro ops at the Rizal Baseball Stadium and surrounding defenses (Day 11). It took the Allies almost four days to clear these strong points.

The Battle of Manila was the first and only urban warfare fought by the Allies in the Pacific theater. Nothing prepared the Allied troops for this type of warfare save for the theoretical training provided in field manuals.

The GIs had to learn their lessons fast in actual combat.

others, how to take buildings: “Inside the building, the attackers should bring corridors, windows, doorways , or other likely sources of enemy resistance under fire as soon as possible.

When the first corridor or section of rooms are taken additional troops should be committed at once. Speed is essential and as soon as a stairway is secured these troops should advance to the upper floors, allowing no time for the enemy to recover. Attackers should get into the highest floor possible immediately either going up stairs or directly up the walls, since once the upper floors are under control, the remaining enemy can be eliminated much easier. Jesus: always God, never a man!

IFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Jesus answered… `If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him… Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father’…” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in John 14:7 and 9, the Holy Bible).

-ooo JESUS: ALWAYS GOD, NEVER A MAN! Hug h Michael Edenburn, an American who now lives in Catbalogan City and who I came to know when he became president of a local Rotary Club in Samar, made a call to me several days ago that launched me into a lot of thinking.

In an apparent attempt to prove to me his spiritual maturity, Mike blurted: “Jesus is both man and God”.

That simple statement from Mike haunted me for several days and made me ask one question: is Jesus really both man and God? After some thought, I came to the conclusion that, no, Jesus cannot be both man and God, even if He came into this world in flesh and blood.

Jesus is God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) all throughout. Even when He was here on earth, Jesus was

always God. He was flesh and blood alright, when He went on with His work here, but He remained to be, and was always, God. His having assumed the form of a human did not make Him man. Rather, it proved He was, or is, God, capable of doing anything He likes!

-ooo JESUS AS GOD ALL THE TIME: THE TRUTH THAT SETS US FREE: The Bible, in its many acceptable and unacceptable translations, supp or ts t he v ie w t hat Jesus was (and is) always God, as He was indeed G o d e ven w hen lo oked human. In John 1:14, it is there categorically stated that even after He came down f rom heaven and l i v e d a m o n g m e n , He exhibited, and many saw, “his glory---the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth.”

The phrase “the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth”, could only mean the “glory of God”, which proves that, notwithstanding He looked like a man, He talked like a man, and behaved like a man, Jesus continued to be God all the time.

And that was what Jesus wanted to say, the truth which He said would set us free: He is God, and is

never man. The story of Jesus asking His disciples, in Matthew 16:18, who He was, according to the people, and according to His disciples who had been allowed to be with Him, showed He wanted to be recognized for what He really was (and is), and that is, that He is God. -ooo FAITH IN JESUS AS GOD: FOUNDATION OF HIS CHURCH: Note that after His disciples told Jesus that the people thought He was Jeremiah, Isaiah, or even John the Baptist---in short, that He was a mere man---Jesus had to ask, in turn, the disciples who these disciples thought He was. He had to do that, to afford Simon, son of Jonas, the opportunity to exclaim, “You are God and Savior” (the other translations of what Simon actually said here should be revised!).

When Simon publicly recognized, in a firm and resolute way, Jesus as God and Savior, Jesus went on to say that Simon’s “rocklike” declaration of faith of who Jesus was (or is) did not come from human intelligence, but was given by the Father in heaven.

Jesus then said that it was upon that “rock-like” faith that He was God and Savior, that He would build His

We will tackle these stories in the future, God willing, but, all of these prove, without any shadow of doubt, that Jesus was never a man, He was always God, even when He looked like a man!

City Treasurer Glenn Bañez said that businessmen who failed to file the renewal and payment of business permits after January 31, 2015 would be meted a 25 percent surcharged and an additional 2 percent penalty.

C e r a e l D o n g g a y, President of the Oro Chamber of Commerce, said that Oro Chamber members would pay the business taxes after the January 31 deadline with an explicit addendum stating “under protest.”

Bañez, however, said that those who already secured a billing statement from the City Treasurer prior to January 31, 2015 but would pay the business taxes after the deadline would be spared from the surcharge and the penalty.

He said that those who would pay their taxes in February or March would be meted a surcharge and penalty unless there is a reason that would compel the City Treasurer to set aside the surcharge and penalty.

Early in Januar y, the C it y C ounc i l approve d O rd i n a n c e No. 1 2 9 0 4 2015 that would extend the renewal, applications and processing of business permits up to March 31, 2015 or the last day of the first quarter.

Bañez has defied the Ordinance saying it is only the City Treasurer who, under reasonable ground, could extend the payment of business permits.

Brisbane-based Glencore Queensland Ltd, a subsidiary of Glencore Xstrata plc, owns 13.1% of Indophil.

Indophil said in September that its independent directors “unanimously recommended that all… shareholders vote in favor of the scheme in the absence of a superior proposal…”

Indophil itself has a 37.5% stake in the 40% controlling stake of Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI), which runs the Tamp a kan gold-copp er project in central Mindanao.

Indophil has GlencoreXstrata for its partner in that SMI venture, with the latter owning the remaining 62.5% of the partnership.

The remaining 60% in SMI is held by Tampakan Mining Corp. and Southcot

Mining Corp.

The US$5.9-billion prospective investment has been on hold since South Cotabato banned open-pit mining in mid-2010.

Besides South Cotabato’s ban on open-pit mining -SMI’s chosen method of extraction -- the project has also been hounded by uncertainty after Indophil bared in March last year Glencore Xstrata’s “preference to divest” as a regulatory requirement for the merger of the Anglo and Swiss firms.

The project site covers an area of around 10,000 hectares straddling Tampakan, South Cotabato; Columbio in Sultan Kudarat; Kiblawan in Davao del Sur; and Malungon in Sarangani.

Bert Pelayo, outstanding Filipino Last February 3, I received the sad news that my good friend Bert Pelayo, founder and publisher of the Filipino Reporter, passed away in New York. Before migrating to the US more than forty years ago, Bert covered the

He was a recipient of, among many others, the Pamana ng Filipino Award, a Presidential Award conferred on Outstanding Filipinos overseas. Apple Tree Revitalized Northern Mindanao for 17 years, ten as Lauremar Beach Resort and seven as Apple Tree.

The need for rebranding came after assessing the need to strengthen Apple Tree’s viability in the tourism industry. Part of the changes involved is the careful restructuring of the resort-hotel’s offers specifically rates and inclusions. This is to best

suit the needs of its target markets in the travel and corporate sectors.

“We are rebranding to stay in pace in this highlycompetitive service industry.

Expectations are higher because Cagayan de Oro can offer more, and we are up to the challenge,” says Apple Tree General Manager Bjanesha ManigsacaEmphasis.
