DAVAO City -- The Mt. Diwata Mining Reservation Area is being eyed as a tourism spot.

The National Task Force Diwata (NTFD) has identified several potential tourist sites in the 8,100 hectare mineral reservation area popularly known as Diwalwal.

Alex Palero focal person of the Program Monitoring Coordination Center (PMCCNTFD) said developing the tourism aspect of the area is considered as part of the masterplan by the Regional Development Council.

He said that the area should not rely on mining alone. With decreasing gold production in Diwalwal, agriculture and tourism are being eyed as alternative livelihood. Gold deposits are now found deeper in the mountains escalating the costs of extracting the gold for miners, many of which are engaged in small-scale mining.

OVERNMENT has formed the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Security of Energy Facilities to address the series of attacks on transmission towers of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines and right-of-way claims in Mindanao.

In a press conference on Thursday, Energy secretary Zenaida Y. Monsada said Mindanao’s power problem is now more of transmission than supply due to attacks on NGCP towers.

Cease-Fire Think a minute.In June, 1969, the countries of Honduras and El Salvador declared war against each other. Until then, these two neighboring nations in Central America had been like close cousins.

For many years people from El Salvador had lived and worked as farmers in Honduras. Then suddenly things changed and the two countries became enemies.

First, the Hondurans attacked the Salvadoran farmers living in Honduras.

The thousands of farmers ran home to El Salvador and told about the attacks against them. Next, both countries broke off diplomatic relations, and in a month the fighting started. Five days later, over 2,000 people had been killed.

The battles continued with airplane attacks, as well as the news media from both countries broadcasting hateful messages over radio and TV. Finally, there was a cease-fire and they stopped fighting.for a short time. Then, the fighting started again and lasted for many more years.

But what happened to cause this war between such close countries? Would you believe that this long, violent war was caused one day in June, 1969, by a decision made by an athletic official. Thousands of

How much longer...?

How much longer will You forget me, Lord?

During many times of darkness when I thought again, that the whole world is against me, I opened my Bible. Suddenly I found Psalm 13, also entitled a Prayer for Help: “How much longer will You forget me, Lord?”

I was born on a Sunday in 1953 - a so-called “SundayChild”. There are sayings that those kind of people will have a life of great success without problems, worries and trials. This is - excuse me! - nonsense!

I also experience difficult, problematic and questionable times, where I am really loosing all my strength to get down to work on those problems. Life’s path becomes narrow. Fears grow : it’s enough, it’s enough!

I still feel, how I started becoming awkward and jerky. I struggled against

everybody around me. I was reluctant against the good ideas of others. I felt driven into a corner. I started to hurt and insult people in my surroundings with arrogance and unqualified comments.

Ever ything became and become a problem and my voice bellows and my groans grow louder.

But admittedly, groans lighten our burden. For even a short moment only, I do feel how my inner life and inside pressure ease off. But sometimes, more trials and problems overwhelm our families and ourselves: illness, death-threats, bankruptcy, war at the working-place, efforts to give us a bad name, intrigues ... .

“How much longer will You forget me, Lord?” We stop groaning. We shout already to God, especially if nobody in our surroundings likes to listen to us anymore. If we are

But He designed His way of living to bring us real happiness, success, and peace of mind. So won’t you call a cease-fire with your Maker?

Just ask Jesus Christ for His forgiveness and new life. Then start living His way. It’s the only way you’ll be satisfied and have real peace from your war with Him and with others.

One quick look and a keen observer would notice that there are more non-session days than session days.

Now, let us try to do some pencil-pushing. We start with 260 working days in a year, (i.e., after deducting 104 Saturdays and Sundays.) From 260, deduct another 30 days representing national holidays and special nonworking days.

From 230, deduct 120 session days when Congress is adjourned, as indicated in the foregoing legislative calendar.

Deduct another 35 session days representing what is allowed for constituency work. In any given week, Congress holds sessions only for 3 and ½ days - full sessions on Mondays to Wednesdays and morning sessions

on Thursdays. This work sked supposedly allows the legislator to be with his constituents the rest of the week.

Thus, all told, a legislator just needs to answer the roll call 75 days in a given year. The rest is free time.

The conscientious legislator uses as much of this time to attend to constituents.

The less than conscientious legislator uses this free time

for heaven knows what.

Wit h such a li g ht schedule, fully paid for by you and me , the absenteeism during scheduled session days remains very high.

“If we want to get volume, smaller models are easy to sell more,” Mr. Kato said late on Wednesday.

Coca-Cola FEMSA to invest $800M in PHL C O C A- C O L A F E M S A Philippines, Inc. has committed to invest $800 million in the local business from this year until 2020 as it expects sales to expand along with the country’s growing middle class, its top official said.

“This venture is very important because if we turn around this company we will show to The Coca-Cola Co. and to our shareholders that we can work in Asia,” Chief Executive Officer Fabricio Ponce said during t h e c o m p a n y ’s m e d i a thanksgiving party.

manning the local business for almost six months, said the Mexican parent company was looking to grow in Asia, and that the performance of the Philippine business was key to that expansion.

This year, Coca-Cola FEMSA will invest up to $170 million in the Philippines, he said, adding that the capital outlay will include the acquisition of two production lines in areas where the company expects to see growth. The investment is expected to increase capacity by 20%.

Mr. Ponce said he expects local sales to growth by 5% this year, up from 2% last year. He declined to give the actual sales value or volume.

In January alone, he noted growth surged by 30%.

“Being in Asia is very important to our growth

strategy so then we can have a balance between countries,” he said, adding that the company had been in the past too focused on Latin America.

“With the petroleum crisis, everyone is having a bad time especially Latin America,” he said, adding that 60% of the company’s business was in Brazil, which is in the midst of an economic downturn.

“In Venezuela, we are having huge problems just to

produce because we don’t get the raw materials,” he said, citing that the country did not have the dollars for the importation. “So for us, this is really a test. So far we are doing very good.”

He said that The CocaC ola C o. and company shareholders have committed to “re-invest everything” during the 2016-2020 period.

“They are not going to take any dividends… but we need to grow,” he said.

CEBU AIR, Inc. met its target for 2015 passenger volume after full-year figures grew by almost a tenth, propelled by its long-haul flights and increased frequencies.

“Cebu Pacific flew 18.4 million passengers in 2015, an increase of 9% from 16.9 million passengers flown in 2014,” the Gokongweiled budget carrier said in a statement.

The budget carrier had targeted to ferry “at least 18 million passengers” in 2015, Cebu Air President and Chief Executive Officer Lance Y. Gokongwei said in June 2015.

“Growth in passenger volume was largely driven by the airline’s low-cost longhaul services, and increased frequencies in key domestic markets,” Cebu Pacific VicePresident for Corporate Affairs Paterno S. Mantaring, Jr. said.

Banks’ NPL ratio improves amid growth in loans T HE ratio between the gross nonperforming loans (NPLs) of universal and commercial banks (U/KBs) and their total loan portfolio (TLP) stood at 1.77 percent as of end-October 2015.

The U/KBs’ NPL ratio improved from the 1.82 percent reported at endSeptember last year amid a month-on-month decline in gross NPLs and an expansion in TLP. The industry’s NPL ratio has been below two percent since November 2014.

declined to P94.52 billion in October from the P95.24 billion recorded a month earlier.

At end-October last year, the industry provisioned for 140.97 percent of its gross NPLs. The NPL coverage ratio registered at 139.74 percent a month earlier.

The U/KB industr y’s gross NPLs also remained manageable across economic sectors as seen in financial and insurance activities; real estate; manufacturing; wholesale and retail trade; and electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply,

which represented 69.3 percent of the banks’ TLP in October 2015.

The latest loan quality indicators show continued adherence to high credit standards by the universal and commercial banks.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) keeps track of the loan quality of U/KBs as part of its supervisory efforts to ensure the soundness of the banking system. This is in line with the BSP’s policy objective of financial stability.

PVB eyes strong growth in non-traditional loans

PHILIPPINE VETERANS Bank (PVB) plans to double its non-traditional loan portfolio this year, as the commercial lender leverages on existing strengths to tap new markets.

In a briefing, PVB Chairman Roberto F. de Ocampo announced that the bank is moving into niche markets and is “looking at services not usually offered by commercial banks.” These include loans to subsistence farmers that would allow them to graduate to agribusinesses, as well as 20-year home mortgage loans that would enable the borrower to recover their loan repayments.

According to a Third Quarter Banking Report (QBR), PVB is the country’s 25th biggest commercial lender with assets of P50.959 billion in the July-September period of 2015. Of its total assets, some P9.793 billion were in loans.

Deposit liabilities reached P44.073 billion, resulting in a loans -todeposits ratio of 86.4%.

PVB Chief Operating Officer Nonilo C. Cruz s aid t he b ank plans to grow its loan portfolio by 100% this year, with bulk of t hat g rowt h coming from the corporate and consumer segments. This would allow the bank to change its lending mix from the current 70% in favor of government to 50% in favor of non-government customers within three

“The government portfolio remains an important component, even as we look at consumers and the corporate sector,” Mr. C r u z tol d s ai d on the sidelines of the press conference yesterday.

ccording to the Chinese zodiac calendar, Februar y 8, 2016 will usher in the Year o f the Fire Monkey.

Geomancer Jeff Ventura says Filipinos have a reason to be optimistic.

“When you say fire, it contaminates,” Ventura explains. “So this is the year where

you say the luck is there.”

Ventura says those born in the year of the Rat, Rooster, Monkey, Dragon, Rabbit and especially under the Pig sign will have a very prosperous year. While those born under the Year of the Ox, Horse, Sheep, Snake, Dog, and Wooden Tiger might experience some challenges in 2016,

but people born under this signs shouldn’t worry too much. They should just be more cautious when traveling, and making decisions especially when handling money.

It is also helpful to know your lucky numbers, lucky days and lucky directions.

Each sign has what Feng Shui experts call secret friends.

Ventura says choosing friends and business partners born under signs most compatible can increase chances of success.

Your wardrobe choices can also spell the difference between success and disaster.

“The best color for this year are blue, black, burgundy, particularly red is also very nice, at the same time that other one that is very nice but

Pag-IBIG Fund and PADPAO launch housing project for security guards Pag-IBIG Fund and the Philippine Association of Detective and Protective Agency Operators, Inc. (PADPAO) star ted the housing project for security guards in Sitio Ilam, Mulig Toril, Davao City through a groundbreaking ceremony led by Pag-IBIG President & CEO Atty. Darlene Marie B. Berberabe and PADPAO National President Ramon D. Bergado. Beneficiaries of the project are PADPAO security guard members and operators.

Atty. Berberabe said that the project is expected to generate 748 socialized housing units.

PA DPAO h a s 1 , 8 0 0 operator-members, with a total manpower complement of 664,000 security guards to date. In Davao alone, there are around 30,000 security guards under the employ of about 100 PADPAO operator-members.

The 748-unit housing project within an area of 71,887 sq.m. will be developed by PrimeWorld Construction and Development Corporation (PWCDC). The developer will build 641 units of Arianna Model and 107 Brianna Model units. The Arianna Model, with a size of 48 sq.m. lot area and 25.15 sq.m. floor area, will cost P450,000. Brianna units will cost higher at P550,000 but the units have slightly bigger dimensions, with a lot area of 54 sq.m. and floor area of 29.85 sq.m.

"Pag-IBIG recognizes the significance of decent shelter in the lives of Filipino families. That is why we have been actively collaborating with both the private and public employers of Pag-IBIG members in order to make the Pag-IBIG housing loan programs more accessible to our members," Atty. Berberabe said.

Prospective projects of PWCDC in Butuan City and General Santos City will also be intended for PADPAO beneficiaries.

In 2015, 16 towers were bombed, nine of which were toppled.

In December 2015 alone, seven towers were bombed: Towers 25, 19, 95, 68, 168, and 153.

Last month, two towers – 50 and 63 – were attacked.
