Banana farm DAVAO CITY — Banana exporter Unifrutti Tropical Philippines, Inc. is finalizing plans to develop a 1,000-hectare farm in the island province of Basilan.

“There is already a tripartite agreement between the local government, ourselves and the cooperatives there,” Unifrutti Philippines President Alberto F. Bacani said in a press conference Friday.

The agribusiness venture agreement is awaiting approval from the Provincial Agrarian Reform Council.

Workspace center DAVAO CITY — Homegrown Damosa Land Inc. (DLI) has inked a franchise agreement with International Workplace Group Co. (IWG) for the establishment of eight coworking centers in Mindanao over the next five years.

“The franchise program is part of our global strategy,” Matthew James Kenley, IWG-Asia Pacific head of partner sh i p g ro w t h , s a i d during the signing ceremony on Jan. 24.

The franchising deal with DLI is its second in the country, with the first located in Cebu.

IWG, formerly Regus, has been operating two Regus centers in Davao City. The first one, located at DLI’s Topaz Tower in Davao City, was opened in 2016 and considered the biggest in the country at 1,600 square meters (sq.m.). Another Regus center can be found in Felcris Centrale since 2018.

HE city government of Cagayan de Oro has organized a multiagency task force Monday (February 3) to address the threat of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) acute respiratory disease, as three persons here are under observation for showing symptoms of the infectious illness.

Councilor George Goking said the body will be tasked with monitoring and taking appropriate response on individuals who may have been infected with the 2019nCoV and other issues related to it.

Chinese tourists flown out of Davao City, envoy says

DAVAO City – The Chinese Consulate General’s Office here has flown to Manila “all their nationals staying as tourists” in this city and other parts of Mindanao in the wake of the deadly 2019 novel coronavirus health crisis that originated in China, Consul General Li Lin said Monday.

Li revealed this amid the announcement that Xiamen Airlines (XiamenAir) cancelled all the direct flights between Jinjiang in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian and Davao City for the whole month of February until further notice.

Davao bans pigs, pork products from neighboring provinces

AVAO City – The city government here has banned the entry of live pigs, pork meat and other pork-related products coming from two neighboring provinces beginning Monday.

Mayor Sara Duterte said the move was necessary following the confirmed African Swine Fever (ASF) case in Davao Occidental and a suspected case in Davao del Sur. “This morning (Monday), I received a report that there is a

suspected case in Davao del Sur for ASF. We will no longer wait for the result of the tests. We include the banning of their province to further protect the hog industry and hog farmers here in our city,” she said.

On Friday (January 31), the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed an ASF case in Don Marcelino town in Davao Occidental--the first in Mindanao.

Don Marcelino Mayor Michael Maruya ordered a "24/7 temporary lockdown" in the selling

and buying of pigs following the death of about 1,000 heads of swine in eight barangays, namely Linadasan, North Lamidan, South Lamidan, Calian, Mabuhay, Lawa, Nueva Villa, and Baluntaya.

“We will not allow any products coming from those provinces. We do not have a case here in Davao City and we’d like to keep it that way,” she said.

In September last year, Duterte signed Executive Order 39 that enforces a temporary ban on all

live pigs, pork and porkrelated products and by-products whether fresh, frozen, processed or cooked but not limited to frozen boar semen from

the entire island of Luzon and other ASF-affected areas.

The provisions of the Executive Order mandated the swine raisers in

Davao City to practice strict biosecurity and good animal husbandry practices in their farms.

P105-M fund set for coco expansion, replanting in Caraga BUTUAN City – Coconut farmers in Caraga Region who want expansion or replanting will receive funding from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).

A total allocation of P105.3 million will be available for the coconut farmers in Caraga Region for planting and replanting programs, PCA-13 Regional Manager Joel

Oclarit told the Philippine News Agency on Monday (February 3).

Oclarit said that aside from planting and replanting programs, a portion of the budget will also be used for the coconut fertilization program in the area.

“The planting and replanting will be undertaken through the Participatory Coconut

Planting Project (PCPP) that will encourage coconut farmers to plant more coconut trees in the region,” he said.

Data provided by PCA13 indicates that Caraga Region has a total land area of 272,093 hectares fully planted with coconut trees covering 1,311 barangays, most in Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. The region has a total number of 118,069 coconut farmers.

Oclarit said that the PCPP is among the major components of the Accelerated Coconut Planting and Replanting Programs (ACPRP) of PCA that promotes coconut planting in open and suitable areas and replanting of senile and unproductive coconut trees and those damaged by natural calamities.

HILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific will be reducing their regular flights to and from China beginning February.

Their announcement came after the Health department confirmed the Philippines’ first case of a new coronavirus strain that killed more than a hundred in China and sickened thousands.

Budget carrier Cebu Pacific, operated by Cebu Air, Inc., will be reducing its regular flights

to and from mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong from Feb. 5 to March 29 as it begins contacting passengers who were seated close to the coronavirus-positive Chinese passenger on Jan. 21.

“In light of developments related to the Wuhan Coronavirus, Cebu Pacific will be reducing flights between the Philippines, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau from February 5 to March 29, 2020,” the

budget carrier said in a statement issued late Thursday.

Cebu Pacific currently has 68 weekly flights from the Philippines to five cities in mainland China, namely: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Shenzhen. It also has flights to Hong Kong and Macau, as well as the occasional charter, which has been suspended, from China to Kalibo and Cebu.

Flag carrier PAL, operated by PAL Holdings, Inc., said in a statement

on Friday: “Beginning February 1st, 2020, we are reducing our flights between Manila and mainland China by more than 50%.”

PAL noted that there is still a need to maintain “a number of its flights on the various ManilaChina routes” to serve the “urgent travel needs” of its passengers, “including many Chinese nationals returning to the mainland following their Lunar New Year holidays, FLIGHTS/PAGE 10

Cebu Landmasters posts 31% reservation sales rise CEBU Landmasters, Inc. (CLI) reported its reservation sales in 2019 jumped 31% to P12.67 billion, driven by higher demand in its key projects across the country.

In a statement yesterday, the listed property developer said the turnout did not only surpass its P9.6-billion reservation sales in 2018, it also exceeded its target of reaching P12.5 billion in 2019.

“Reservation sales is an indication of future revenue and with the robust sales performance of our projects,

we are again anticipating outstanding financial results from CLI,” Jose R. Soberano III, chairman and chief executive officer of CLI, said in the statement.

The high demand last year was traced mostly to CLI’s projects in Cebu City, which contributed 58% of total booked sales. Projects in Davao City comprised 15%; in Cagayan de Oro, 13%; in Bacolod, 12%; and in Dumaguete, 2%.

The company said notable projects such as Mivela Garden Residences propelled

the sales turnout last year, as the mid-market residential condominium in Cebu City sold 80% of its available inventory in less than a month.

Other outstanding performers are CLI’s midmarket Garden Series brand in Bacolod and Cagayan De Oro, which comprised 37% of total sales; and the high-end Premier Masters residential brand, which accounted for 30% of total sales.

CLI’s economic housing brand Casa Mira took 29% of last year’s total sales. The rest

were from office condominiums and socialized housing.

After completing P18-billion worth of projects last year, the company now wants to focus on developing projects in new locations such as Iloilo, Bohol and Ormoc. CLI currently has a landbank of 1,245,485 square meters.

Mr. Soberano said CLI is also eyeing to buy land in Tacloban, General Santos, Roxas City, Boracay and Palawan as part of the expansion.

“CLI will continue to grow

and fortify its presence in VisMin, deliver a diversified range of products aimed towards filling the needs in other major growth centers of the region, and keep our excellent financial performance,” he was quoted as saying.

In 2019, CLI was able to launch new projects in Davao City, Bacolod City, Cagayan de Oro and Mindoro. Its earnings in the first nine months surged 77% to P1.65 billion, backed by a 61% rise in revenues to P5.95 billion.

Who said life is fair?

Think a Minute…” Who said life’s fair!” I heard my grandmother say that a thousand times if I heard it once; and there was a reason she said it often. When my grandmother was a little girl, one day her father just left her and her mother—and he never came back! So my grandmother fought that feeling of rejection and unfairness all her life. From an early age as a child she learned that life is not fair!

My guess is so did you.

Hop e f u l ly you d i d not experience such a painful injustice as that. But as a child your father punished you for something you didn’t do; or a neighbor blamed you for something that was someone else’s fault.

Maybe you had a teacher in school who really treated you unfairly. And now that you’re an adult, your boss is unfair. Laws seem to discriminate. Even your wife or husband may treat you unfairly, or accuse you unjustly. Who said life’s fair?

Because it’s not!!

So what can you do to handle the unfairness of people and life? Once again

Dealing with nCoV

I HAVE been monitoring the alarming development of the outbreak of the Novel Corona Virus which had spread all over and not sparing even the first world countries. For a number of days Philippines, despite its proximity to China, was not in the list of countries where the deadly and highly contagious virus was detected. Wuhan, which is the epicenter of nCoV had been locked down while China authorities have assembled the best of their scientists and health workers to address the plague. Their actions come in lightning speed including building a huge hospital in Wuhan in just a matter of 10 days!

Still, reading from Facebook comments, China gets the browbeating. Sadly the blame game is spiced with vicious political undertones instead

of helping the Department of Health and local government units in informing and educating the people on how to contain the spread of the virus and the importance of preventive measures.

This is not the first time that magnitude and threats of viral infection gripped the world and resulted in horrendous fatalities. The first flu virus was first monitored in the US and Spain in 1918 infecting about 500-million people and killing about 50-million and about 675,000 of these were reported in America.

The Ebola virus was detected in Congo in 1976. The Avian flu started was said to have started in China but was also reported in North America making it difficult to pinpoint where it really hatched. If we go centuries back the

Black Death which was the epidemic of the Bubonic Plague in the mid-1300s practically depopulated the world. Rat fleas spread the pathogens and it ceased only by avoidance, the deadly fire in London and wintry weather which reduced the population of rats and fleas.

The deadly coronavirus strain was Severe Acute R e s p i r at o r y Sy n d r o m e (SARs) which also originated in China. It was said to have spread to 37 countries and claimed 774 deaths mostly occurring in China and Hong Kong. This was uncovered in February 2002 but by July 2003 the spread and infection stopped.

That was how Charles Koch described what his dad, Fred Koch, the founder of Koch Industries, told him before handing over the CEO leadership. His advice was genuinely embraced by Charles, and he went on to grow the family business into a global giant with $115 billion in sales and 100,000 employees making it America’s second-largest privately held family business next only to the Cargill

group.

Koch Industries: The Biggest Company You've Never Heard Fr e d i s c r e d i t e d a s installing a strong work ethic in his children and Charles has often quoted his father as saying "I don't want to have any kids that are country club bums", adding that from as young as six he was expected to help out with the chores.

The family business was founded in 1940 that started with a method of refining heavy oil into gasoline, then oil refineries and pipelines.

But under the leadership of the second generation, the family business grew into a multinational conglomerate encompassing lumber, paper, chemicals, coal, fertilizer, and sophisticated financialtrading operations.

Second son Charles has been chairman and CEO since 1967 and Forb es magazine estimates that siblings Charles and David are worth approximately

sixty billion dollars each ranking them as America’s ninth-richest men.

Despite embedding a deep sense of traditional family values on the Koch children, unity and harmony was never a guarantee. With unclear rules on management and ownership for family members, mounting challenges related to family an d bu s i n e ss re l at i ons became a constant struggle.

Eventually the pressures gave in to strained relationships amongst the offspring right after the father passed away.

Kochs vs Kochs C h a r l e s , D av i d a n d Bill followed their father in earning engineering degrees from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While eldest son Frederick was more of an outlier as his interest was into arts.

When the father died in the 1960s, Charles took charge. As the business grew, younger brother Bill, feeling sidelined and concerned

over the company's direction joined forces with Frederick in 1980 and attempted to unseat Charles. The power struggle shook the organization and the Board stepped in and sided with Charles.

In 1983 Charles and David bought out their brothers' share. Unfortunately, more lawsuits followed, with Bill and Frederick alleging they had been cheated on the valuation. It would take almost two decades for a court to rule in favor of Charles and David and finally put a closure on this storied sibling rivalry.

The payout was resolved but the animosity was so deep that the brothers ignored each other at their mother's funeral in 1990. Blood and money usually spells conflict.

And Bill emphatically calls it “a very explosive issue!"

YES, we need to pray without ceasing, as St. Paul told us in his First Letter to the Thessalonians. (5, 16) To keep our spiritual life alive, to make it survive all trials in life, let alone, to make it work effectively and grow healthily, we need to pray without letup.

What food is to our biological life, prayer is to our spiritual life. Prayer is like the breathing and the very beating of the heart of our life with God and with others. It is the primary and abiding link we have with God and with everybody else. Without it, we would simply isolate ourselves.

In short, we can say that while God is objectively with us, since he is present everywhere, we have to make sure that on our part, we should also be subjectively with him. Precisely, St. Augustine once complained

about this problem of God being with us while we are not with him. We need to correspond to this objective reality of our unbreakable and intimate relation with God. Our need to pray is like our need to breathe. It should be non-stop, since it is indispensable in our union with God our Creator, who keeps us alive and healthy in our spiritual life. Again, let’s bring back a basic truth — without God we are nothing!

The only difference is that breathing is a bodily necessity and is instinctive and automatic until we die, while praying is a spiritual necessity that requires conscious effort and continues even after death, though in a different form.

In fact, praying requires faith, hope and charity which first of all are gifts from God

that need to be corresponded to by us with a lot of patience and the dynamic interplay of all the other virtues.

We s h o u l d n o t b e surprised by this requirement of prayer, much less complain about it, since praying is our most basic way of dealing with God who has given us all and who has the right to expect all for us also, we being his image and likeness.

We are reassured that God always listens to us even if it would seem to us that he does not. Precisely this is the point that is highlighted in the Gospel of St. Luke, chapter 18, verses 1 to 8.

It talked about the parable of the dishonest judge who in the end gave in to the demands of a widow who was persevering in herpetitions for her to be given justice.

“While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,” the judge

Virus to continue scaring investors this week

HE market is seen to trade with a downward bias as investors continue to be glued to updates on the spread of the novel coronavirus (nCoV) from China.

“Markets have been rattled by the virus, so they will take their cues on how the disease has spread, or been contained,” said Regina Capital Development Corporation Managing Director Luis Limlingan.

Philstocks Financial Senior Research Analyst Japhet Tantiangco noted that, “Risks are still tilted to the downside amid the said epidemic together with the lingering regulatory worries. If the coronavirus would be contained, then we may see a rise in the market.”

However, he said that, “If the

outbreak escalates in our country, we may see a further decline in the local market.”

Meanwhile, Limlingan said the local market will also be watching for January inflation figures and the Bangko Sentral announcement of interest rates this week.

“Given the 5.1 percent unemployment rate we have, which shows a tightening labor market, together with the inflation rate which they expect to pick up this past January, we think that the Monetary Authority would hold benchmark rates unchanged for now,” said Tantiangco.

Online brokerage firm 2Tradeasia said investors should “brace for further volatility from hereon, as markets digest developments on the nCoV side,

and its accompanying economic repercussions.”

“Time and patience go handin-hand in these trying times but consider monitoring bargains whose cash flow models historically stand resilient,” it added.

Top online brokerage firm COL Financial has upgraded its recommendation on Universal Robina Corporation to a BUY because its “prospects are brighter this 2020 coming from an inflection point in 2019.”

“The recovery of the coffee business is underway starting with the successful launch of its new products. We are also more confident that management can revitalize URC’s other businesses under the leadership of the new management team,” it added.

The Ayala-led lender’s net income in 2019 surged by 24.8% year on year to P28.8 billion, it said in a disclosure to the local bourse on Wednesday.

For the fourth quarter alone, BPI’s net income went up by 11.6% to P6.77 billion.

Meanwhile, comprehensive income for the full year was at P28.77 billion, the bank said.

The lender said its net interest margin grew by 24 basis points in 2019 to 3.35% from 3.11% in 2018.

On the other hand, BPI said its non-interest income jumped 25.2% year on year to P28.39 billion in 2019, buoyed by higher fee-based income and securities trading gains.

Operating expenses amounted to P50.08 billion, growing by 14.8%.

Meanwhile, cost-to-

income ratio was at 53.1%, which dipped from the 55.5% seen in the 2018.

Loans disbursed by the bank grew 8.9% year on year to P1.48 trillion in 2019. This was backed by the growth seen in segments including consumer (13.4%), corporate (7.9%), and small and medium-sized enterprise (5.8%) loans.

The bank’s loan-todeposit ratio for the year was at 87%.

Meanwhile, deposits went up 6.9% to P1.70 trillion in 2019, while its current and savings account (CASA) ratio stood at 69.1%.

Comprehensive income for the full year was at P28.77 billion.

Looking into 2020, the bank said they will target to offer more services geared towards the SMEs as well as self-employed professionals.

TWO TO THREE banks have expressed interest to set up an Islamic banking unit in the country, according to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Managing Director Arifa A. Ala. This follows the regulatory framework unveiled by the central bank following the implementation of the Republic Act No. 11439 or an Act Providing for the Regulation and Organization of Islamic Banks, which was enacted in August 2019.

The law will allow traditional banks to go into Islamic banking operations once they receive approval from the Monetary Board (MB).

Ms. Ala clarified that these banks have only expressed interest and have not yet submitted formal applications.

“So hindi pa talaga complete application

(It’s not yet a complete application). Kasi ganun talaga, kaka-issue lang ng IRR (It’s like that because the implementing rules and regulations have just been issued) so they were exploring the possibility of establishing,” she told reporters.

“Even before the passage of this law, they were querying kasi (because) everyone in Southeast Asia — look at our neighboring countries, they have Islamic banks.

Data released by the Insurance Commission (IC) on Tuesday showed that premium income grew by 2.77 percent in the third quarter of 2019

to P224.97 billion from year-ago’s P218.91 billion.

The jump in premium income was traced to increased number of variable life insurance products, which at the end of the third quarter this year pushed income to P172.05 billion.

Net premium income of the non-life sector during the same period amounted to P44.02 billion.

In terms of assets, the life sector registered P1.39 trillion as of endSeptember 2019, while it

is P248.99 billion for the non-life sector.

The pre-need industry is also growing, with assets rising by 3.70 percent to P127.62 billion in the third quarter last year from P123.07 billion during the same period the previous year.

The health maintenance organization (HMO) registered an uptick in total assets after revenues reached P36.76 billion, higher by 8.64 percent from P33.83 billion in the third quarter of 2018. (PNA)

Equal Access hosts youth peace summit in CDO C

AGAYAN de Oro-Over 500 peace influencers all over the country gathered here last Thursday that culminates on Saturday (February 1) for a Peace Summit dubbed as: Our Mindanao Peace Summit 2020 with the theme, “Turning the Loop: Bridging Generations of Peace Influencers”.

The three-day summit was organized by Equal Access International Philippines (EAIPh) that offers an opportunity to discuss the role of collaboration, communication, and coordination to push for sustainable peace and cocreate a shared vision of a better Mindanao.

Over 20 speakers across 8 summit events lead in discussions across 3 unifying themes: transforming violent extremism,

youth empowerment, and positive alternative messaging,said EAI-Ph Country Director Salic Sharief Jr in an interview.

Also to discuss the impact of violent extremism in Mindanao and share working practices on how best to transform this growing concern, the summit will bring in key experts, development practitioners, and peace influencers through the Honest Conversation of peace forum and Messaging Hub Convergence,she added.

In a press conference at the Chinese consular office, Li said the last batch of Chinese tourists were flown Sunday to Manila for assistance by their embassy in returning to China.

“We have already sent Chinese tourists visiting the Davao and Mindanao areas during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) back to China (via Manila).

By the latest contact with local travel agencies here in Davao, they reported to me that no Chinese tourists are remaining in Davao,” he said.

Chinese tourists usually stay in Davao from three days to one week, Li said.

The envoy did not give a figure on the Chinese tourists who visited the city for the Chinese New Year, which was celebrated on January 25.

He noted the Chinese tourists were not compelled to leave Davao, but were only “advised” since the lifting of the suspension of the Davao-Jinjiang flights is still uncertain.

“The Jinjiang-DavaoJinjiang f lig hts for the whole month of February are cancelled. If they want to stay, they might not be able to go back to China (this month coming from Davao),” he said.

Passengers with flights to China are also given the option to rebook and refund their tickets until Feb. 29.

Preventive measures Misamis Oriental Provincial health officer Jerie Calingsan said he has ordered the activation of barangay emergency response teams on each of the 424 villages in the province to help monitor the presence of transients in their respective villages-especially foreigners who recently came from nCoVaffected countries.

Calingasan said all transients who recently arrived from abroad since the last week of December must submit themselves to selfquarantine within 14 days, the incubation period of the dreaded novel coronavirus.

In Cagayan de Oro City, health officer Lorraine Nery reported that the City Health Office (CHO) has already determined that no Chinese national had died at Alwana Park compound in Barangay Cugman last week, contrary to rumors that had spread on social media.

The spread of coronavirus had been attributed to rodents, snakes, birds that include chicken, swan and other migratory birds and bats which appeared to be the main culprit as far as the coronavirus strains are concerned. Bats, which are nocturnal creatures fly in great distances and bring the virus with them. Scientists discovered that bats build an immune system against so many kinds of viruses that can mutate in their bodies.

There are a tiny variety of bats we call “kwaknit” in Visayan and the bigger ones we call “kabog”. During my teens, while living in our farm in the hinterlands of Midsayap, Cotabato our neighbors would watch for thousands of kabogs which fly in drove and feast on

nectars of flowers in a wild kapok tree in the middle of our farm. They use slingshots that hit and puncture the bat wings and send them plummeting to the ground.

While still alive the flying mammal is forced to imbibe vinegar to get rid of their obnoxious smell. They are then prepared for the adobo.

But that was seven decades ago when mutations of the virus were unheard of.

Unlike kabogs that live in caves,, the tiny kwatnits stay in cogon or nipa roofs.

That's how close they come in contact with humans. They feast on mosquitos and other flying pests. We see pictures on Facebook of Chinese from Wuhan eating kwaknit from a soup bowl. Kwaknits are never eaten in our farming community because they feed on mosquitos. In my recent trip to our farm, I no longer see as many kwaknits hover ing in t he hous e because the breeding places of mosquitos and even of dragonflies had been reduced on account of pesticides. Fecal drops of bats or dead bats can infect rats, snakes, and fowls.

While these mammals had been identified as carriers the homo sapiens share the blame for making them part of the menu.

The novel coronavirus has traveled across the world. China has the highest infection and mortality so far. It was just very recently that Philippines health authorities confirmed one person, a Chinese national from Wuhan, positive of the NCoV and confined in San Lazaro Hospital. By recent account moreover, she is no longer showing symptoms of the disease. Here is the list of suspected cases that are being monitored by DOH. * Metro Manila - 18 * Cental Visayas - 4 * Western Visayas - 3 * MIMAROPA -1 * Eastern Visayas - 1 * Northern Mindanao - 1 * Davao – 1 As of the latest count, the number of infected cases worldwide is now at 9,700 and 213 recorded dead. People, of course, are panicky. The media is giving us full coverage and gives us the scare. But here is some good news to assuage our fear. DOH has acquired the necessary test kits to diagnose the nCoV within 24 hours of testing. Health sleuths are tracking down on people which the above suspects have contacted. The WHO has raised the status of nCoV to Emergency and that means more restrictions might be imposed worldwide. This will cause some setbacks but temporary. For as long as we observe precautions and help health authorities we can deal with this scourge promptly and shortly.

Here in Davao City, Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio assured her constituents that they have taken proactive measures to address the nCoV issue. She said that she and the city health officials have been meeting with DOH and as a matter of policy, always defer to the national government decisions which are beyond the powers of Local Government Units.
