Rice sufficient AGRICULTURE Secretary William D. Dar said the rice inventory is sufficient until the end of the year despite widespread crop damage caused by consecutive typhoons.

In a television interview Thursday, Mr. Dar said at the end of the year, the rice inventory will be good for 82 days’ demand despite the damage sustained by the agriculture sector.

“The current supply will bring us another 82 days’ worth of rice (starting) January 2021. After that, we will have new production that can be harvested by late March and April,” Mr. Dar said in an interview on ANC.

Non-tarrif measures THE Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), which the Philippines is part of, has signed a new document that will address non-tariff measures in trading coronavirus-related products within the region.

In a statement Thursday, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez said economic ministers of Asean signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the Implementation of non-tariff measures (NTM) on essential goods at the sidelines of the 19th Asean Economic Community Council Meeting last Nov. 10.

Under the MOU, Asean member states were urged to refrain from “introducing or maintaining trade restrictive measures on essential goods”.

O rehabilitate 302 hectares of upland plantation in Barangay Digkilaan, Manticao, Misamis Oriental, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region X, San Miguel Corporation Global Power (SMCGP) Philippines Power Foundation, Inc. and Barangay Digkilaan Upland Farmers

Association, Inc. (BDUFA) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on November 25, 2020 at the DENR Region X, Cagayan de Oro City.

this MOA and will provide funds to support in the mobilization of community for the implementation of the Project in the upland plantation.

Cenro Mahinay added that under the MOA, the DENR shall provide the necessary technical assistance to support the activities in nursery operation, seedling production, plantation establishment, and maintenance and protection and assist SMCGP Foundation in monitoring, supervision and conduct of ground

validation on the progress of the development of the project areas to ensure that it is done in accordance with the plans and specifications of the Work and Financial Plan.

The BDUFA, Inc. shall rehabilitate the Upland Plantation covering 302 hectares in Brgy.

CDO to convert tech-voc institute to corporation “We are now in the threshold of converting our technical-vocational institute to a corporation,” says City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno during a virtual gathering, November 24.

The mayor said that the corporatizing of the technical-vocational institute is in order to help in developing youth in the city, or even in the region.

If not at the end of this year, the corporation will be established early next year.

In his speech, Moreno said the creation of a council on technical education and skills development in the city way back 2018 paved the way in the establishment of the CDO tech-voc institute.

Conducted free tests for over 290 passengers flying to General Santos during first day of pilot run

HE Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) pilots Test Before Boarding (TBB) today, December 03, 2020, for its flight to General Santos City.

Over 290 passengers went through antigen testing just hours before their scheduled flight, free-of-charge. Tests were conducted by DOHaccredited Philippine Airport Diagnostic Laboratory (PADL).

“Today marks an important day for domestic air travel with the pilot of TBB, as testing is made more accessible because of the speed and affordability of Antigen testing. This

Money mentality (Pt. 1) Think a minute . . . Not long ago a woman was on trial for the murder of her husband.

She told police that she shot and killed her husband after they argued about money.

Hopefully it never reaches such a tragic end as this. But money is one of the biggest battlegrounds in marriage.

Different thinking, values, and habits with money between a husband and wife can separate, even destroy, their relationship and f am i ly. To d ay and tomorrow we will discuss how to better manage our money and different money mentalities, so we can enjoy true peace and prosperity in our marriage.

First, we need to understand that our arguments about money are often not really about money, but about our other problems which are deeper.

For example, if the husband or w i fe s p e n d s m on e y impulsively, it shows that they will tend to impulsively get what they want in other areas also. They will selfishly do what they feel like doing, instead of making decisions together with their wife or

Violent clashes erupted in Paris Saturday as tens of thousands took to the streets to protest against new security legislation, with tensions intensified by the police beating and racial abuse of a black man that shocked France.

Several fires were started in Paris, sending acrid smoke into the air, as protesters

vented their anger against the security law which would restrict the publication of police officers’ faces.

S ome 46,000 p eople marched in Paris and 133,000 in total nationwide, the interior ministry said. Protest organisers said some 500,000 joined nationwide, including 200,000 in the capital.

President Emmanuel Macron said late Friday that the images of the beating of black music producer Michel Zecler by police officers in Paris last weekend “shame us”. The incident had magnified concerns about alleged systemic racism in the police force.

“Po l i c e e ve r y w h e re , justice nowhere” and “police state” and “smile while you are beaten” were among the slogans brandished as

protesters marched from Place de la Republique to the nearby Place de la Bastille.

“We have felt for a long time to have been the victim of institutionalised racism from the police,” said Mohamed Magassa 35, who works in a reception centre for minors.

“But now we feel that this week all of France has woken up,” he said. “ The fundamental and basic liberties of our democracy are being attacked — freedom of expression and information,” added Sophie Misiraca, 46, a lawyer.

Several cars, a newspaper kiosk and a brasserie were set on fire close to Place de la Bastille, police said.

Some protesters threw stones at the security forces who responded by firing tear

gas and using water cannon, an AFP correspondent said.

Police complained that protesters impeded fire services from putting out the blazes and said nine people had been detained by the early evening.

– ‘Unacceptable’ – France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin condemned “unacceptable” violence against the police, saying 37 members of the security forces had been injured nationwide.

Thousands also took part in other marches in some 70 cities in France, including in Bordeaux, Lille, Montpellier and Nantes.

The bad, the ugly, and the beauty WE'RE six weeks away to ending the year 2020 which we can all agree was not that kind to the Philippines.

In the span of 12 months, we have seen the bad and the ugly that can happen to a country.

Just as we were starting 2020, Taalvolcano erupted.

That fateful day of Jan 12, about 43 years from its last eruption in 1977, Taal Volcano spewed ashes across Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and some areas of Central Luzon. Lives were claimed, properties damaged and economic activities disrupted.

Sometime in March, we got reports of another African Swine Fever outbreak in several parts of Luzon, resulting in the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of pigs in the affected areas. And then we have the COVID-19 pandemic, which almost brought our country to a st andst i l l and change d our economic landscape.

Quarantines, lockdowns, health protocols, and other new normal became part of our everyday lives. With the rapid spread of the virus, more lives were claimed and economic slump everywhere.

As i f t he p and e m i c wasn’t enough, our country experienced the wrath of typhoons Rolly and Ulysses, which severely hit and damaged Bicol, Cagayan/ Isabela, and Marikina. As of this writing, relief operations and rehabilitation efforts are still underway in these areas.

We pray hard that these will be the last of the “bads” we will have this year.

With these bad events, come the ugly things. During this time when all hands should be on deck, we still see political bickering, blame game, disconcerted efforts, and silo mentality among our government leaders. Everyone wants to claim credits, wants to grandstand…epal is very much around. But no one

is taking responsibility and accountability for what went wrong. Right in front of our eyes, unfolds the inefficiency and insensitivity of some government officials.

Our front-liners did not immediately get the support and protection they needed b e c aus e s ome of f i ci a ls were sleeping in their jobs.

Those who were supposed to implement protocols were the first to violate. Yet they wonder why the regular Juan dela Cruz will not follow. And guess what, they’re still very much in the position.

What is bad becomes wors e b e caus e of such ugliness.

But not everything that happened is all bad and ugly. Amidst the pandemic, the typhoons, the political grandstanding, and inefficiencies, we see the beauty of the Filipino spirit.

We see concern, kindness, and generosity from those who were always ready to

Our money and possessions mean more than just those things we buy.

For example, a car is just a way to take ourselves from one place to another; but many people buy a more expensive car to try to show how successful they are, even if they cannot afford it. So their spouse and children end up not having other more important things they need in life. Remember, “A fool can make money, but it takes a wise man to spend it.” Sadly, “Some people are in debt because they keep spending what they want their friends to think they MONEY/PAGE 11

That’s right. We need to declare an unrelenting war against our self-indulgence which has become a very formidable problem we all have. Yes, this has always been a problem to us, but these days it is much more so.

With the many ne w wonderful things that can instantly give us convenience, c om for t , p l e a s u re an d satisfaction, many of us are trapped into the very sticky web of obsessions, addictions and the many other forms of self-indulgence that feed on our weaknesses, like lust, pride, conceit, gluttony, unhinged curiosities, envy, etc., etc.

We just have to give a cursory look around to see how bad this problem is.

Many people are just looking at their cellphones most of the time. There are reports saying that many young people often forget their meals and lose

sleep because of what they do in the Internet. It’s clear they are terribly hooked there and it seems it’s now next to the im possible to get them out of there.

As a result, many duties and responsibilities are left unattended. Disorder and chaos are fast gaining ground as priorities are skewed. Superficiality has now become a mainstream lifestyle, reinforcing the trend toward consumerism, materialism and what Pope Francis refers to as the “throwaway culture” where ethical and moral considerations are ignored or even flouted, i.e., regarded with contempt.

Yes, many people are now living in their own world, detached from the realities of life. Their spiritual and social life, their relation with God and with others are now all but non-existent. At best, they give only appearances of

these unavoidable aspects of life, enough to meet at least certain external expectations.

We have to react to this unfolding and disturbing reality with drastic measures.

We have to do this with coordinated efforts, involving as many of us as possible. Let us recover our true bearing that in the end is rooted on the spiritual and supernatural, on our intimate relation with God that should translate into our increasingly intimate relation with everybody else.

L et’s ma ke G o d t he b e g i n n i n g an d e n d of everything that we do. He should always be in our mind and heart, in our thoughts, intentions and desires, in our feelings and passions.

He should always be in our deeds. And because of him and through him, the others should also always be in our mind and heart.

In early childhood education, play has a very important role in education.

Sometimes we take play for granted in early childhood education but actually, play has a great role in educating young children. Without play, education for young children is boring and sometimes it becomes a burden to them.

With play, children find education an interesting and enjoyable one. This could give the children a feeling of excitement every time they go to school.

Observations-wise, when I was still a student teacher, children who are playful or active are more skillful than those who are passive.

Because in play, children can learn skills and techniques which are helpful in their education. In play, they can learn how to count. Through play children can develop analytical and critical thinking skills which help strengthen what they have learned in school.

More often, children who are playful are children who are easy to get along with because with play, children can learn how to get along with others and they can learn attitudes and behaviors like sharing. They can also overcome shyness and selfcenteredness. Through play, children can also learn skills on how to make friends with other children. These

are the observations I had with my preschool pupils (when I was still practicing to become a teacher) that I could still vividly imagine up to now.

Knowing all these have helped me understand why children should have to engage in playing. And the implication of this is that, teachers should include play in teaching, especially those who are handling young learners, as part of the classroom activities.

This calls the attention of the parents as well, to loosen their control on their children by allowing them to get outside of their houses and have the chance to play and explore.

Parents' role in the new normal

As it prepares for the “new normal’ in education due to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 crisis, the Department of Education (DepEd) underscores the important role of parents and guardians in making sure that the learning of their children will continue amid expected disruptions.

The cooperation and support coming from parents will be very important as the entire basic education system braces for the socalled “new normal.”

The other aspect and I think this is really big, is the role of parents. The role of the parents especially on an online platform is very relevant and huge. If online learning will be used, there are several considerations that would require parents’ participation and involvement such as the facility to be used, gadgets,

internet connection, among others.

If the parents or other family members like g r an dp are nt s , au nt i e s or uncles, and even the nanny, we need to give them orientation too.

Parents in ever y community and ZIP code have always cared deeply ab out t heir chi ldren's education. The difference now is that we are seeing it in both more intimate and more public ways.

We are seeing it in long lines of parents, with children in tow, taking days off work and braving multiple buses to get laptops.

We are seeing it in the calls from parents and students flooding our hotlines at all hours to get help logging into remote learning. We are seeing it in classroom Zoom sessions, where parents and other caregivers sit with their

students to support their learning and ask clarifying questions.

I have been struck by the number of principals telling me about staff who have said they were wrong about this parent or that grandmother, now seen more as a vital ally rather than an unwanted adversary.

No longer can we dust off the welcome mats for back-to-school nights and parent-teacher conferences and then swiftly roll them back up, shooing parents away and telling them, "Trust us." We are now guests in their homes.

For the first time ever, parents can see what exactly we're giving their childrenand what we're not. They are hearing how we talk to students. They are coming to know, through all that we do, what we believe about their children.

SHS basic education learning continuity plan 2020 in light of the COVID-19 public health emergency RAFUNZEL D. EPANIS MT II- OIC Senior High School MOGCHS

Learning is a continuous process. In the recent times where the whole nation is placed under modified quarantine, learning remains non-negotiable. “Learning while staying at home” is not an option but a must.

Modified modalities fostering learning, provision of a platform and resources address c ur rent e duc at ion rel ate d challenges.

Modality and medium of instruction are the key elements considered in this pandemic time for delivery of lessons.

Students ‘environment and teachers role are being challenged as to how instruction can be delivered and evaluated.

The schools has already advanced the pages of their preparation for this period in terms of adapting the best practices during normal conditions. An override in curriculum design, a practical pathway to a clear destination of information and curriculum shift, a program implementation of academic advising, methods of planning, content validity, instruments for assessment and evaluation and development techniques and application with all available resources organized to assure faculty responsibilities and reporting relationship and achievement of the mission and overriding objectives.

Other related preparations are integrated in the Annual Improvement Plan as addendum.

MOGCHS Senior High School had to face another challenge in terms of its growing population that constantly increases due to pandemic. There is that zoning of students according to learning modality preference.

Thus, the need to devise different modalities in delivering quality education is the top priority. Class program has to be in week 1 and week 2 shift.

Before the implementation of the new normal curriculum, D.M. No. 137 s, 2020 directed schools for an on line training for utilization and development of Ebook for learners as a roll out activity. The teacher selects application, creates virtual classroom and set-up teleconference for an interactive distance participation. Teachers crafted learners’ materials/modules/worksheets (D.M No. 135 s. 2020). Schools likewise must adapt validated and quality assured SLM from central or regional offices.

Teachers’ capacity building are intensified for a sustainable implementation of the program. Teachers harvest all available and existing educational materials in electronic copies. On the onset, the preparation of the learning packages like downloading of Modules from Region SLM, Printing and Sorting of downloaded SLM is the toughest and entails massive participation and cooperation both from the teachers and parents support.

As mandated by D.M No. 135 s. 2020 – Implementation of Flexible learning modality (Flexi LM), MOGCHS Senior High School will employ modified distance learning, remote lesson activity where there will be absolutely no face to face between the learner and the teacher.

And for teachers, it is a work from home working arrangement (D.O no.052 s. 2020) for stringent social distancing measures.

The activity utilizes the flexible learning modality in various platforms in the implementation which is experimental subject to evaluation and recommendation that if found effective will be used comes the opening of regular classes.

The last but not the least. Within fact our top priority, Health and safety measures against COVID 19 are ensured in all undertakings.

Based on the most essential learning competencies, the program will utilize

flexible modality which is a combination of printed modules and virtual modules.

Virtual modules refer to the online and offline learning modules consolidated in the On the GO – USB (OTG-USB) to cellular phone. This virtual module is highly recommended for learners without internet connection but they have android cell phones and television with USB port. This utilizes a video containing the introductory part and activity directions with a corresponding printed worksheets designed and prepared by the teacher contained in a USB provided.

The on line on the other hand can be of various platforms commonly available and of easy access applications in the site tailored in a distance learning mode.

Ebook(Kotube), on line modules (ed.

Puzzle) and webinar are among the highly recommended applications for the recent learning condition.

All innovations, initiatives, and activities are in virtual manner which means no face to face modality (D.M. No. 174, s.

2020). Common available personal gadgets and devices at home are the medium of instruction for learners. USB and printed worksheets are provided by the school. School monitoring and evaluation adjustment in the learning modalities implemented is another challenge.

Learners can be evaluated by the teacher through the following mode of verification: submitted outputs, interactive participation (virtual), students learning log, and thinking log for learners.

Parents’ willingness to co-supervise and co-monitor the progress of their children’s learning plays a vital role in students’ learning adventure.

There are many constraints facing distance learning education in Philippine schools: shortage of qualified science teachers, lack of quality textbooks, i n a d e q u at e e q u i p m e nt . Ho w e v e r, curriculum has to be geared towards the framework for education should pay attention to problems that will address ways to improve or raise the quality of teaching practices and learning process.

Although the learning mode in this new normal time is “learning while staying at home”, learning indeed is vital. A learner must make the most out of it despite this pandemic time.

CDO joins The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' #LightTheWorld celebration

THE Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints celebrates the birth and life of Jesus Christ through the #LightTheWorld by caring for individuals one by one throughout the month of December.

For more than 30 years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has been lighting the Manila Philippines Temple grounds as a Christmas tradition and usually expects thousands of members and friends of other faiths to visit as the Yuletide holiday draws near. However, since visitors will not be able to visit the temple grounds due to the pandemic, the Philippines Area Presidency has decided to bring the lighting event online.

In the Philippines, the Church currently has two operating temples, one in Quezon City, the Manila Philippines Temple and another one in Lahug, Cebu City, the Cebu City Philippines Temple. Two temples are under construction as of this writing, one in the greater Manila area and another one in Urdaneta.

Three more temples

have been announced and are scheduled to be constructed in Cagayan de Oro City, in Davao City, and in Bacolod City.

All over the world, there are 168 dedicated temples (160 currently operating; and 8 previously dedicated, but closed for renovation), 31 under construction, and 32 announced (not yet under construction). #LightTheWorld is an invitation to transform Christmas into a season of service. It’s a worldwide movement to touch hearts and change lives by doing the things Jesus did: feeding the hungry,

comforting the lonely, visiting the sick and afflicted, and showing kindness to everyone.

53rd Shell NSAC Awards: Hope during this pandemic year

S AUDIENCES reckon with art’s essential place in providing comfort and positivity during difficult times, an environment of support is essential for young struggling artists to thrive—so that they may continue to spread messages of hope and shine a light on the future.

Founded on its mission of empowering the young artists of tomorrow, Pilipinas Shell’s National

Student Art Competition (NSAC) held its 53rd run this year, with the timely theme of “HOPE IN OUR ART.” For the first time in history, the longest-running Philippine student art competition was held completely online, its platform reaching out to more young artists around the country.

The 53rd NSAC concluded with an awarding ceremony held last November 27 via Zoom, with entries totaling

1,500—a testament to the art sector’s rapid growth and potential and the vibrant enthusiasm of young Filipinos towards art.

“For young Filipino artists, NSAC has been a platform to learn and grow by harnessing personal experiences and transforming them into works of art,” said Cesar Romero, President and CEO of Pilipinas Shell. “May we work together to reinforce art’s place in a post-pandemic

society — one that deserves to be cultivated for many years to come.”

“The importance of art has never been clearer during the months we spent in isolation when art was used to express feelings—from fear and gratitude, to trying to make sense of what the world is going through," stressed Tourism Secretary Bernadette Puyat, who was a guest speaker at the event."

“One by One, Whole Body” by Victor Nadera from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. The piece references the quintessential 1x1 ID photos taken for school admission, but it also reflects how the education system has had to change because of the pandemic—which has robbed many students of the chance to enjoy this period of their youth alongside their friends, classmates, and teachers.

Despite this, many students around the country continue to persist through their studies in the hope of fulfilling their education and one day improving the nation.

“MHM (Mental Health) Matters” by Bea Therese Musni from the University of Rizal System, Angono Campus. The artwork depicts a cry to recognize the rise of mental health amid this turbulent year.

With catastrophes and crises going on everywhere, mental health often gets put on the backburner, but the young artist Musni reminds us that taking care of one’s health is integral before becoming a beacon of hope for other people.

“Wala Akong Choice Kundi Magdasal”

by Rianne Abucejo from the University of San Carlos. The winning entry is a powerful expression of the power of prayer as a source of strength as the world attempts to make sense of the uncertainties surrounding them. Although there are often more questions than answers, faith and a spiritual connection in the grand scheme of the universe can be a lifeline of hope.

“Ako Ay May Lobo” by John Lirio from the University of the East, Caloocan.

The artwork utilizes elements of youth, particularly toys, to portray a picture of beginnings that can signal hope for humanity. At first look, Lirio’s artwork may appear like random objects attached together, but the rising balloon signifies that we, as humans, can go beyond our suffering and emerge stronger and wiser.

“Pag-Asa Bldg. Room 50/50” by Jao Pelaez from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila. The sculpture speaks of the tragedy that occurs when lack of education paralyzes the youth.

Composed of one-half of a school chair and another half of a wheelchair, Pelaez puts together two unlikely objects to assert the message that the youth are indeed our hope for the future—but they must first be supported and empowered to thrive.

“Ayuda” by Bea Cortez from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. The piece, the title of which translates to “help” in English, depicts camaraderie and the Filipino spirit of community which sustain our countrymen during the hardships.

Cortez makes use of cans, which alludes to canned food products—the standard type of relief goods received by Filipinos in need. To some people, canned food products may not be a big deal, but it is a significant symbol of hope---and a literal lifesaver---for others.

by Gyles Abac from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. It is an ode to nature and its importance to humanity.

The piece references the activity of gardening, which has become a source of respite for many over the lockdown period. But more than a hobby, plants depict growth, hope, and new beginnings.

2nd Place: “Pag-usbong ng Binhi” by Mark Lagrana from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila. The piece symbolizes the inevitable challenges of life, and how they can be used as fuel for resilience and rising together once more. In the context of COVID, the pandemic revealed numerous cracks in the system, but on the other side of the coin is a chance to repair these cracks and start anew.

1st Place: “Rep-Leksyon” by Wendel Candawan from Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology. The artwork explores how people can lift each other up in this time of the pandemic.

Through solidarity and trusting each other, communities may unite and find collective strength.

3rd Place: “I Am Genuinely Optimistic” by John Magbuhos from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Manila. It is inspired by the adage “just be positive.” From mere catchwords, these words have taken on new meaning amid the pandemic. While tribulations threaten to bring people down, staying positive becomes an energizing act of hope.

Similar to previous competitions, Pilipinas Shell also tapped various veteran artists and esteemed community members to serve as judges for the 53rd NSAC, namely: Lex Kabigting, Jose Tence Ruiz, and Ross Capili for

Philippine Education: Comprehensive and Extraordinary?

“Learn how to learn” is one of the Finland’s focuses in education. They ranked high in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) because of their type of education that competes internationally. It was mentioned in the video made by Brunswich.

Canada.Flv that Finland has the kind educational system which is comprehensive and extraordinary. She left no child behind and all students have the same system regardless of their background. Moreover, she considers interactive factors in education which include the teachers, the students, and the working r e l at i o n s h i p b e t w e e n teachers and students.

Education in this country, they believe, is the only resource to take care. And this long bond paper won’t be enough to write all the intriguing and fascinating strategies of Finland for education just to preserve their means of improving the Finnish’ quality of life.

I envy them, why? Well, let me account my answers.

First, Finland has a high quality of education compared to the Philippines.

I know that Philippines is now making ways to improve education through the K-12 program. However, it cannot be denied that education is not the primary focus of the Philippine government. Some of the schools offer high-standard education but, obviously, not all. Most of the facilities are incomplete, insufficient and unreliable. The Filipinos are competitive and highly-intellectuals who find ways to improve their status of living. On the other hand, these great attributes of the Filipinos are being neglected because of poverty. But I cannot understand this perspective because Finland is also a poor country but the government has able to provide the Finnish a good quality of education. Well, priority.

Second, Finland has t he s ame e duc at iona l system applied for the students compared to the Philippines that is managed and regulated by different departments.

In Finland, every student enjoys the equal opportunity of studying.

In the Philippines, the aimed-competencies aren’t equivalent to providing all Filipinos with the learning they need and enable to compete internationally.

The background of the students always matters as well as their capabilities.

So how can we improve our country if only few can attain the type of education that is comprehensive and wide-ranging? Well, rich can do that but some of them are not willing to contribute for our country’s progress because they don’t mind the people in the lower area of the society who are poor.

Third, t he Finnish doesn’t mind the money when it comes to choosing a profession. Most of the students in Finland would say that “It doesn’t matter how much money I earn, what’s important for me is I love what I do”. I know that this kind of answer depends on what type of person you are but the Finland’s education system has contributed a lot to the student’s comprehension about valuing the education than money. They have molded the young minds through their educative learning system and environment to be matured and proficient individuals.

I envy them because in the Philippines, because of our socioeconomic status, money or to earn is what we consider first. So sad, but yes, we need it.

Of all the things I expressed, I know that every individual is responsible of choosing what type of learning system and environment to enter.

He/She may be poor but when he/she has a mind that is eager to develop and improve him/herself to be able to compete internationally. One can study abroad through scholarship and in any good way but do he/she still need to go outside Philippines just to achieve the kind of education like Finland—comprehensive and extraordinary? I don’t think if it’s the good thing to do but I am not losing my hope that maybe someday, the Philippine education will rank highest in the world. But first, we should also learn how prioritize education and make it as our source of development.

Aboitiz Group turns over air-conditioned tents to Davao City, SPMC

S THE COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the livelihood of citizens across the globe, careful measures and proper care must be taken for those who are afflicted by the virus.

In its mission to uplift local communities, the Aboitiz Group, through AboitizPower and the Aboitiz Foundation, turned over a total of 20 airconditioned isolation tents to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), the primary COVID-19 treatment hospital in Mindanao. The group partnered with Cebu-based Concepcion Industries, Inc. for the air-conditioning units.

Danel C. Aboitiz, AboitizPower Senior Vice President for Regulatory Affairs and External Relations, led the turnover of the tents that are meant to address congestion in the hospital and provide a more comfortable isolation facility for patients.

The assignment was divided according to the total number of participants as to the total number of learning competency equally.

The teachers appreciated E-book learning materials because you can add and paste different interesting features that will enhance your lessons. The most enjoying part in designing your topic is when you are m a k i ng you r ow n attachments and choosing relevant materials to make your E-BOOK more efficient and effective. After E-BOOK making, we are also directed by the Division Office to make learning modules in the same subject based also on MELC. We are making modules with the same

learning competencies.

We can design our own modules freely.

With the help and cooperation of the grade 1 teachers, we are able to make and submit our outputs on t ime.This instructional Materials is so useful and can be utilize as future references. I am able to send soft copies of the outputs to the Division Office and to our District ICT coordinator. This instructional materials will be kept in the District Learning Resource Center (DLRC) as well as in Alubijid Central School Learning Resource Center ( SLRC ).

DepEd intensifies gender-responsive basic education policy

In the Basic Education Act of 2013 or RA 10533 where Kto12 curriculum is anchored, RA 9710 and GADmatters are already in place. Textbooks are GAD-sensitive, and teachers are empowered through GAD trainings and advocacies as 5% of its annual budget is allocated for gender and development through the school’s MOOE. In fact, an obvious manifestation that GAD is present and being observed is the declaration of the DepEd Mission which clearly acknowledges GAD, which states that “To protect and promote the right of every Filipino learner to quality, equitable, culturebased and complete basic education where students learn in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe and motivating environment.”

Meanwhile, Republic Act 9710 or Magna Carta of Women directs government offices or agencies under the executive branch to implement the said policies and guidelines. Since this law covers all sector in the government, I will dwell on the mandate afforded to DepEd for relevance and proximity reasons, on whether or not the laws and provisions are translated and implemented accordingly. It is further stipulated in the Declaration of Policy, to wit, “Recognizing that the economic, political, and sociocultural realities

It shall promote empowerment of women and pursue equal opportunities for women and men and ensure equal access to resources and to development results and outcome. Further, the State realizes that equality of men and women entails the abolition of the unequal structures and practices that perpetuate discrimination and inequality. To realize this, the State shall endeavor to develop plans, policies, programs, measures, and mechanisms to address discrimination and inequality in the economic, political, social, and cultural life of women and men.”

With this, the School’s Office Performance C ommitment and Review also includes partnership with stakeholders in its quest for GAD equality. In fact, during seminars and meetings with parents, stakeholders, learners, registration committee shall ensure the inclusion of gender identity to determine the participation rate of each gender.

For physical structure, DepEd new buildings have been carefully designed that will cater to all types of learners, PWD included, and the proper assigning of male and female comfort rooms on separate wings of

the building, which are also being strictly monitored by the Division Office engineering department.

Moreover, there are also identified schools that provide equal access to Madaris especially to non-Muslim areas. For Technical Livelihood and Education subjects, gender matters are never an issue. Male learners who prefer Beauty Care, Hair Care and Nail Care are not discriminated. The same is also true to female learners who prefer Computer System Servicing and Electronic Product Assembly Servicing where these skills are used to be dominated by male counter-part, are also accepted. In sports, there are always two categories, girls and boys for elementary and high school, women and men for higher education.

DepEd is doing its best to address GAD issues and concerns so that its VMG will be realized. Gender should never be a hindrance in achieving the dreams of our learners for them to be successful and be able to contribute meaningfully in nation-building.

Likewise, its teaching and non-teaching personnel are also given attention when it comes to gender and development so that they will also maintain professional and personal courtesy with utmost respect to gender-related matters. They are expected to act as role models in RA9710 implementations.

Mayor Sara Duterte moved the full implementation of the DQR system from Nov. 7 to Nov. 23 after the registration website crashed due to high traffic days after its launch.

But the supposed ma ndator y enforcement h ad b e en c a nc el le d a s several offices and business establishments here did not have scanners for the DQR system. “ We w i l l h o l d t h e mandatory implementation of the DQR because not all establishments, as of today, can scan. So, only those with Android phones, internet connection, and offices and establishments in the list can start. But if you are ‘Android’ but have no internet connection, you cannot start yet,” she said at the time.

Issued on Nov. 3, Executive Order No. 60 provides that the DQR will be used as as a pass for entry into and travel inside the city for the purpose of delivering goods and accessing essential services, or work- and business-related transactions.

It also serves as a pass to be shown at law enforcement checkpoints and to barangay patrols implementing the prohibition on non-essential travel, and as a contacttracing log on non-essential travel.

Emperador sees expanded growth of brandy business across the Americas next year

ANILA, Philippines – The world’s largest brandy company Emperador, Inc. is further expanding its brandy business across North and South America next year as its brandy portfolio continues to dominate market shares in several countries in this part of the world.

In the United States, volume of Don Pedro and Presidente have been growing in the last five months even as the country faces the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

Both brandy products are part of the Casa Pedro Domecq portfolio in Mexico, which is now under Grupo Emperador Spain and currently controls 57% of the

Mexican brandy market.

Don Pedro recorded ‘double digit’ volume growth particularly in Nevada, New Jersey, and Illinois while Presidente also enjoys rapid growth in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

“We see brighter prospects in further growing our brandy business across the United States in 2021.

Our products are now readily available in several states. Aside from Don Pedro and Presidente, we are also selling our imported brandies – Spanishmade Fundador and Philippine-made Emperador – across the US. From January to September this year, we have already increased our Fundador sales in the US by around 23%

and this is a very positive signal for us,” says Juan Cortès Vilardell, chief executive officer, Grupo Emperador Spain.

In Latin America, another brandy product under Grupo Emperador Spain, Brandy Domecq, is already dominating the brandy market in Colombia with a 91% market share.

across other Latin American countries, particularly in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Panama, Aruba, and Brazil.

“Just like in Mexico where we have dominated the market share for brandy, we have also seen a steady growth in Colombia’s brandy market in the last five years. As their economy improves, more and more people are upgrading

to brandy from their local white drink called Aquardiente. We remain focused on further expanding our presence across Latin America by also introducing our imported brandy products, particularly the Philippine-made Emperador Brandy, because the taste preference for brandy in this region has been remarkably growing,”

Vilardell further explains.

During the first nine months of the year, Emperador’s international business boosted its net income by 11% to P5.9-billion. In the third quarter alone, the company achieved a record growth of 26% in its earnings due to the surge in the demand for its products in various overseas markets even in the middle of the pandemic.

Emperador Inc., whose brandy and whisky brands are available in more than 100 countries, is a publicly listed company at the Philippine Stock Exchange that owns Emperador Distillers, Inc., Scotch whisky maker Whyte and Mackay Group, and Bodegas Fundador in Spain.
