Briefly Gawad Kalasag DAVAO City -- The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Davao Region granted 11 disaster councils, schools and rescue groups the Gawad Kalasag award based on their readiness and response capabilities in a simply rites at the Pinnacle Hotel. The Gawad Kalasag (Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan award) is given to individuals, non-government organizations, private sector and government organizations in recognition of their initiative in helping the Filipino government uplift the standard of disaster management in the country. Retired Brig. General Loreto Rirao, director of the Office of Civil Defense 11 and chair of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council led the ceremony and cited the awardees this year.

HE volume of palay produced in northern Mindanao for the third quarter of the year grew by 5.79 percent, reaching 190,930 metric tons (MT), compared to the 180,480MT produced in the same quarter of last year.

A report prepared by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in the region showed that Bukidnon and the two Misamis provinces posted output increases during the period. The report further noted that Bukidnon was the top rice producer in the region sharing 61 percent of the regional total or 117,339 MT. Engr. Cecilio Clarete, chief economic development

specialist of the Development Research Division of NEDA-X, said the output increase in Bukidnon was attributable to the absence of apparent infestation and good weather condition in the province during the quarter. The output of Lanao del Norte, the second top producer of the region, went down by 12 percent to only 36,170 MT. palay/PAGE 7

Metro Pacific unit takes over CDO’s water service

Livelihood facilities SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) in coordination with the Office of Provincial Agriculture (OPAG) turned-over recently one unit of Corn Sheller and one unit of Corn Mill Building to Upper Laguna Corn Farmers Association in the municipality of Cagdianao, this province. The said facilities are under the Sustainable Livelihood Program of DSWD-Caraga thru the Participatory Livelihood Opportunity Analysis and Cash for Building Livelihood Assistance, it was learned. The corn sheller machine was given to the said association in order to have an easier and quicker production of corn which will eventually generate more income.

METRO Pacific Investments Corp (MPIC) is set to take over the operations of Cagayan de Oro City’s primary water source. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, MPIC said subsidiary Metropac Water Investments Corp (MWIC) entered into an agreement for the operations and maintenance of Rio Verde Water Corp’s 100 million liters per day bulk water facility in Baungon, Bukidnon. Rio Grande is the exclusive supplier of bulk surface water to Cagayan de Oro Water District, which supplies more than 80 percent of Cagayan de

Oro’s population of 640,000. “MWIC will utilize the expertise of its water affiliates to improve operational efficiency, minimize operating losses, ensure uninterrupted service, and extend the life of the assets,” MPIC said. The deal is envisioned to wind down the deteriorating deep wells that are depleting and damaging the area’s water tables. MPIC controls a majority stake in Maynilad Water Services Inc, the water concessionaire for the West Zone of Metro Manila and parts of Cavite. --InterAksyon
