MRDP awards DAVAO Oriental -- The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental bagged several awards from the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP), during its culmination program held in Davao City last Wednesday, December 3, as it was recognized for its exemplary performance in the implementation of projects under the MRDP2. Davao Oriental was hailed Best Performing Provincial Local Government Unit in the entire region in terms of rural infrastructure implementation, specially citing its remarkable accomplishment in the completion of the big-ticket, P289 million Cateel Irrigation System, which is by far one of MRDP’s biggest projects. As the MRDP lauded the province’s noteworthy efforts towards this monumental accomplishment, it also hailed Davao Oriental as a model LGU that would serve as a benchmark in the whole country in terms of national and local government partnership.—with wire reports

Philip Morris allots $50M for MisOr farm expansion T By IRENE DAYO, Staff Writer

OBACCO giant Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp. (PMFTC) Inc. has earmarked over $50 million (roughly P2.2 billion) in the next six years to expand the Virginia tobacco plantation in Claveria, Misamis Oriental.

The plantation is located in Brgy. Ane-i, Claveria, a landlocked interior municipality in the eastern

part of Misamis Oriental. “We’re starting up a whole new operation down there because it’s quite a

unique project that we got, it’s only the second place in the world where we grow tobacco twice a year,” PMFTC President Paul Riley said on the sidelines of the Bright Leaf Journalism Awards last week. DTI monitors noche buena products in Camiguin MAMBAJAO, Camiguin - - T he D e p ar t me nt of Trade and Industry (DTI) Camiguin provincial office here intensifies its market monitoring activities particularly for Noche Buena products during the months of O c tob e r, Nove mb e r and December to ensure stable prices and supplies this Christmas season and protect consumers from unscrupulous traders taking advantage of the spike in shopping activities. DTI said that retailers found selling above the suggested retail prices (SRPs) were asked to explain the price hike and show cost of acquisition. If it turns out that the manufacturer or distributor was the one selling goods higher than the SRP, then DTI shall issue summons to these manufacturers or distributors to explain the increase in price. An administrative fine of up to P1M shall be imposed

for violation of the Price Act subject to the circumstances provided after due notice and hearing. Criminal liability for illegal price manipulation may result to imprisonment of not more than 15 years and a maximum fine of P2M. The DTI issued the 2014 SRPs of Noche Buena products to guide consumers in their purchases during the holiday festivities at the same time to warn retailers nationwide to sell within the SRPs. The SRPs are provided by manufacturers to set retail prices of products and with the published SRPs, consumers are guided on whether the goods sold are over-priced or above the profit margin. DTI as the champion agency for consumer welfare released the list SRPs of v a r i o u s No c h e B u e n a products under its Price Watch section and will publish it in major newspapers and

will distribute posters to supermarkets and retail stores nationwide. The Filipinos’ commonly called “noche buena” products include: ham, fruit cocktail, cheese, sandwich spread, mayonnaise, keso de bola, pasta spaghetti, elbow and salad macaroni, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, and cream. For the DTI, a list of SRPs serves as the widely published prices of certain products to inform consumers and retailers and also to assist consumers and retailers in managing and budgeting their finances when they are aware how much they need in buying goods. DTI also bared that in Camiguin, the prices are considerably higher compared to the SRPs considering the transportation cost and other costs encountered in the delivery of goods within the island. But in the totality of the business environment,

prices are competitive among local business traders. Meanwhile, DTI urges consumers to be vigilant and carefully check and

compare the weights of competing brands, and more importantly, the expiration dates of food items prior to purchase.

DOLE grants P.92M in livelihood assistance to Maramag civic group MARAMAG, Bukidnon -At least three Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Maramag town recently received P920,000 in livelihood assistance from Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to jumpstart the communitybased enterprises. hink a minute…There was a rich English Baron named Fitzgerald who had only 1 child, a son. Fitzgerald’s only son was the love and pride of his parents. But when the son was just a boy, his mother died. He and his father became even closer. Meantime, Fitzgerald had become much richer. He collected very expensive, valuable paintings by the famous artists of the world. Then, just 2 years after losing his wife, Fitzgerald’s son became sick and died as a young boy. Before Fitzgerald himself died years later, he carefully wrote his will and instructions on how his riches were to be handled. He wanted an auction to sell all of his valuable paintings. They were worth millions of dollars, so many rich people from all over Europe came to the auction. Among all the valuable paintings, however, was 1 cheap, poor quality painting by an unknown local artist. It was a painting of Fitzgerald’s only son. Fitzgerald had ordered that this painting of his son be sold first before any of the other expensive paintings. Yet, because it was of such poor quality no one wanted to buy it. Finally, an old servant of Fitzgerald who had known the son and loved him offered to by the ugly painting for only a couple of dollars. Then, before they

continued to sell all the expensive, valuable paintings, the lawyer read out loud from Fitzgerald’s will. Fitzgerald had written: “Whoever buys the painting of my son also gets everything else that I own. The auction is now over.” That old servant who truly loved Fitzgerald’s son got everything! All of Fitzgerald’s valuable art, money, houses, land, the servant got it all! Remember, God said that if we love and live for Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, then we also will become God’s children and have all that God has to give us. But you and I must choose to love Jesus and live His way every day, instead of our own way. Jesus said that’s the only way you and I can have it all. So why not become God’s son or daughter today? Politics in Reporting the Dead from Typhoons

They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths…” (2 Timothy 4:3-4, the Holy Bible). -ooo POLITICS IN REPORTING THE DEAD FROM T YPHO ONS: If the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) refuses to accept the number of people who died from Ruby coming from the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), why then can’t it not give its own actual body count even if all cities, towns, and provinces in the country have their own disaster councils which have been monitoring those who died from the typhoon? PNRC reported early Tuesday that, as per its own count, some 23 or so people died from Ruby’s ferocious rains and f lash f loods. But NDRRMC has been contesting PNRC’s numbers with hammer and thongs, as it were, saying there is a need to wait for confirmation from local disaster councils, maintaining that as per N D R R M C ’s c o u n t o n December 09, 2014, only three persons died from

Ruby. So, which of the two--NDRRMC and PNRC--must we believe? Is it true, as some are now saying, that politics is now shaping the reports of casualties during typhoons, in the light of the desire of the Aquino government to project a “zero casualty” scenario so it could not be accused once again of incompetence and inefficiency in dealing with disasters, just like in the case of Yolanda in 2013? -ooo MARKET! MARKET!’S WRONG MESSAGE TO DRINKERS: The management of Market! Market! at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City made a mistake in relieving two of its security guards who were reported in social networking sites as having pointed an armalite rifle and a baseball bat at a group of late night drinkers who engaged in a melee Saturday night at its food court. This is sending a wrong message to the guards and to drinkers who can’t handle themselves. You see, the reports are clear: the guards were forceed to point the armalite and the baseball bat to the combatants because they refused to be pacified and to heed calls for them to stop their fight, which endangered other shoppers and patrons. At that point, the safety of other people was already at stake, and the guards

obviously decided to exert reasonable force to preserve order, prevent harm, and uphold the safety of shoppers. The guards, therefore, merely acted pursuant to their duties and responsibilities. Indeed, the combatants stopped creating trouble. Yet, the guards were sacked for doing this. I guess that next time a riot or a melee erupts at Market! Market!, guards would just simply look the other way already. This makes going to the mall extremely dangerous, because there would no longer be someone to keep the peace when violence erupts. -ooo LACK OF DISCIPLINE NOW PREVALENT AMONG PINOYS: But what was more bothersome for more people about this incident was the reaction of some netizens. It was clear the netizens saw only the supposed “abuse” by the guards, but failed (or, perhaps, refused) to recognize that the “abuse” in the first place occurred because of the lack of discipline of the food court’s drinking patrons, and their unconcern for the safety and well-being of other customers. Who is the right-thinking Filipino who would indulge in drinking and then, after getting drunk, engage in a hand-to-hand combat in a place filled with shoppers? The answer is, there should be no one who should be doing this. It was therefore

clear that those who roughed it up with one another at the Market! Market! were not in their right minds, as many Filipinos are won’t to be, after having downed a drink or two. The problem, really, is that, many Filipinos have lost their capacity to be good and civil towards one another. Many Filipinos now act as if they are not going to die someday, and so they do everything wantonly, recklessly, and, more often than not, criminally. Welcome Each Day with Gladness

e have every reason to welcome each day with gladness, regardless of how our condition may be physically, mentally, emotionally. And that’s because God is always good, and his love and mercy never end. No sin nor stupidity of ours can change that. It’s not him who will condemn us, if ever we get condemned. It’s us. We need to train ourselves to always have a positive outlook in life, to be hopeful and optimistic, in spite of whatever. As far as God is concerned, he has given us everything we need to be like him, happy, full of love and goodness. We have to look at this matter first of all within the framework of the overall plan of God when he decided to create us and the rest of the universe. Truth is we have all been created out of love, out of sheer goodness on the part of God who did not have any need to create anything or anyone. He just wanted to share what he has with us. In short, the whole of creation has been generated out of love and is meant for love. With God’s omnipotent providence, it will remain in a state of love. As his image and likeness, we are supposed to reflect that love and goodness in our life, in

our attitude toward him and everybody and everything else. Even if we abused his goodness and fell into sin, God continues to love us. He will re-create us, heal us, redeem us as he actually has done and continues to do. He will forgive us always, just as he in Christ has commanded us-”not only seven times, but seventy times seven.” Let’s listen to what Christ has to say about this: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (Jn 3,16-17) It’s truly worthwhile to engrave these precious and reassuring words in our mind and heart. Since we cannot help but abuse the goodness of God, and so get our just deserts by suffering some forms of sadness, shame, pain and the like, we should always remember that God will continue to love us. This has been proven by the fact that Christ died for us. He assumed our sins. His love for us is not self-seeking (eros), nor a matter of sharing (filia). He

goes beyond, to the point of giving himself to us even if his love is not corresponded properly (agape). St. Paul explains it plainly in this way: “God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” (Rom 5,8) This is the irrefutable b a s i s f o r o u r j oy a n d confidence in life, in our attitude towards anything, in spite of whatever mistakes, sins, miseries we may have. We need to train ourselves always to have a joyful, hopeful outlook in life. It would not be good if we allow ourselves to be dominated by fear, worry, anger, doubts, sadness, etc., just because of our problems, difficulties, or worse, our sins and mistakes. Yes, we have to learn to face them, solve and resolve them the best way we can. And yet even in the worst scenario when we encounter situations of insoluble predicaments, we still have reason to be joyful and at peace, because Christ has assumed all our troubles on the cross. We need to learn how to be sport in life, how to move on in spite of setbacks, how not to get stuck in our failures and disappointments and to rot there. If we look at our predicaments the way

Christ looks at them, it would not be hypocrisy if we strive to smile even if our heart is burdened with something. That would be heroic sanctity. In the face of our abuses, Christ simply preaches what is right. He may correct, or sometimes scold as he did to Peter. But he does not prevent us from exercising our freedom, no matter how wrongly we use it. He simply drowns evil with an abundance of good, to the extreme of offering his life on the cross. This is how we can be joyful and at peace all the time. Yes, we may suffer, but it’s a suffering that does not take away our joy and peace. The two-day activity was participated by about 800 high school student-

Some Elementar y pupils and te a che rs a l s o to ok part in the training. Their participation was authorized by DepEd Superintendents Cherr y Mae L. Limbaco of Misamis Oriental, Myrna T. Castaños of Gingoog City and Cora T. Asa of El Salvador City.

With the theme, “Bottomline Leadership: Being Relevant and Making Things Happen,” the whole activity consisted of five plenary sessions. The first session was facilitated by Vice Governor Pelaez who gave a keynote lecture on the traits of a good leader. T h e s e c o n d s e s s i o n’s speaker was Mr. Benralph S. We’re helping farmers down there now, so we’re starting up a whole new operation. We’re building curing barns, [and] seedling trays as we provide seedlings to the farmers,” he added. As one of the biggest tobacco buyers in the country, Riley said the $50 million five to six-year investment plan in Mindanao is part of PMFTC’s long-term commitment for the Philippines. “We’re not going away so we have to invest in the future,” he explained. In January 2012, PMFTC established its first Virginia tobacco experimental farm in Claveria, covering 10 hectares of land. After the initial result of the trial, PMFTC proceeded to the pre-commercialization phase after seeing a very promising opportunity in Claveria, which is known for growing the Batek/Native tobacco variety. Some 113 farmers representing a total area of 58.27 hectares were involved in the second phase of the project, which ended in October last year. PMFTC then extended pro du c t i on a s s i s t a n c e , including tobacco seedlings, to the farmers. After harvest, the company bought the fresh tobacco leaves from the farmers, and did the flue curing using the six barns it constructed with slabs from sawmills. The first batch of

transplanting for the commercialization phase was conducted in November 2013. The company practiced staggered transplanting of K326 and PVH 2254 varieties, from November 2013 to April 2014, covering a total area of 200 hectares. Based on a sur vey conducted by the National Tobacco Administration through its outreach station in Mindanao, most farmers in Claveria are willing to shift to tobacco farming as they can avail production assistance from PMFTC. They said that they no longer worry about their post-harvest activities since the company will buy the freshly harvested leaves from the growers. Aside from the promise of a bigger income from tobacco farming, the farmers were also optimistic about the employment opportunities provided by the tobacco firm’s expansion program.

he culture of volunteerism is a proud legacy of the Filipinos as citizens and as a nation. Service is our way of life, as the practice of ‘bayanihan’ or mutual cooperation has long been instilled in our consciousness. It has played an important role in helping the nation with the recent crises and disasters. Undoubtedly, volunteers have enabled the country to rise above challenges and move forward. Volunteerism has become instrumental in improving the lives of the deprived and underprivileged. Thankfully, there are volunteers who willingly devote their time and effort to others and serve as essential partners of the nation in the quest of social change. The National Volunteer Month (NVM) is celebrated every December to pay tribute to the commitment and dedication of volunteers, regardless of class, age, gender, expertise, and interest, who are united by a common goal of achieving equality, peace, and development. Through NVM, the country

recognizes the volunteers’ significance in nation-building. It honors the heroes who work without regard for material reward and find fulfillment in witnessing the change in the lives of people and communities they have touched. Volunteering for the Environment This year’s theme puts emphasis in the environment and highlights the volunteers who have poured efforts in taking care of nature in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on environmental sustainability. Filipina bags Miss Earth 2014 crown, now brand ambassador of Sun Cellular F

or embodying positive values, and good choices, Sun Cellular recently hailed Miss Earth Philippines, 19-year-old student, Jamie Herrell, as the newest ambassador of Sun Cellular. Herrell was chosen during a prepageant fashion show where she and fellow Miss Earth candidates worked the runway donning their respective national costumes. Growing up in the province of Cebu, Harrell went with a Filipiniana-inspired gown and a crown that resembled that of the Santo Niño de Cebú, or the Holy Child of Cebu, a Filipino religious image which the province is known for. A few days later, Herrell was crowned the 2014 Miss Earth. Herrell took the coveted Miss Earth 2014 crown during the pageant’s coronation night last November 29 at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, besting candidates from more than 80 countries around the world. During the pageant’s question and answer portion, renowned French conductor and flautist Olivier Fabrice Ochanine threw Herrell the question: “If you win tonight’s crown, what will you do to help them slow down or reverse the effects of global warming?” To which Herrell answered: “Global warming has been known for being a very long overdue issue. That is why if I am crowned tonight, I will use my title to inspire others, to help our environment. And we start with the kids, because the kids are the people of tomorrow, and if we teach them, they will also help the community. And that’s what I will do if I am crowned Miss Earth tonight.”

Herrell said she feels that bearing the Miss Sun Cellular title is very appropriate for her, expressing her excitement to promote the good choice among Filipinos and be an ambassador of Sun Cellular’s best value offers. “It is a privilege to be named Ms. Sun Cellular,” the acting major said. “I never thought I would get the title, but then I’m really grateful.” Aside from the title of Miss Sun Cellular, Herrell was also given Sun Cellular’s wearable gadget-smartphone combo composed of an Alcatel Pop D5 Android smartphone and an Alcatel Boomband so she can promote a fit and active lifestyle among Filipinos.
