New hydro plant UNITED Holdings Power Corp. (UHPC) said it plans to construct a 15-megawatt mini-hydropower plant in Bukidnon beginning early next year.

UHPC President and Chief Executive Officer Dominic L. Sytin told reporters that he expects the Maladugao River project in Kalilangan, Bukidnon to start operations by the second quarter of 2017.

“A portion of the energy produced will be supplied to the (First Bukidnon Electric Cooperative) to help alleviate the power shortage in the province,” he said.

Mr. Sytin did not disclose any project costs, but added that the company is in the process of securing permits from the National Water Resources Board and the Department of Environment and National Resources.

First time moms MARAWI City -Breastfeeding mothers, especially first time moms, shoud not worry if they produce less milk, according to the City Health Office.

City Nutrition Coordinator Fatima Macapodi has said that moms can still produce enough milk as long as they breastfeed their babies because frequent suckling of the baby stimulates the production of breastmilk.

To further stimulate milk production, she advised breastfeeding mothers to eat nutritious and balanced diet and make sure that the attachment or positioning of the baby during breastfeeding is proper.

Macapodi also explained that a mother can still breastfeed even if she is tired from work or even after doing household chores.

F Mindanao hopes to at least sustain its average 6.3% economic growth in 2013, investments must be made in infrastructure, agriculture and tourism, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said.

Janet M. Lopoz, MinDA executive director, said a stu dy by t he age nc y indicates that government investments in these sectors have attracted more private investments that contributed significantly to the gross regional domestic product (GRDP).

“This is especially true in the case of infrastructure facilities because they cut across all sectors,” Ms. Lopoz told BusinessWeek Mindanao at the sidelines of the Mindanao Business

Solutions Expo held here last week.

Ms. Lopoz said that for Mindanao to either sustain or increase its economic growth, investments must also be poured in transportation and logistics, particularly farm-to-market roads and port facilities, as well as cold storage facilities to cut post-harvest losses in crop production, she added.

SIARGAO, Surigao del Norte – The Siargao International Surfing Cup this year, now on its 20th year, is expected to be the biggest in terms of bringing in surfers and tourists from all over the world, organizers claimed.

“This year the Siargao International Surfing Cup got even bigger after the surfing world’s governing body, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), made

the competition one of its sanctioned events,” said Gerry Degan, contest director. Thus,

THE National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) calls on all cultural and art groups, academic institutions, local arts organizations, nongovernment organizations involved in culture and arts from Northern Mindanao to submit project proposals for the NCCA Competitive Grants Program for 2015.

Mylene Urriza of the NCCA Subcommission on the Arts during a press conference in Cagayan de Oro City today said that their priority projects for 2015 are defined by 19 national committees.

These are under the four subcommissions which are National Committees on Architecture and Allied Arts,

Cinema, Dance, Dramatic Arts, Literary Arts, Music and Visual Arts; Northern, C e nt r a l a n d S o ut h e r n Cultural Communities of the Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts.

Meanwhile, there are also the National Committees on Archives, Art Galleries, Libraries and Information Services, Historical Research, Monuments and Sites, Mueseums under the Subcommission on Cultural Heritage; and under the Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination, the National Committees on Cultural Education, Communication and language Translation.

Urriza said that about

200 proposals have already been submitted in their office but clarified that this is a competitive grant wherein there is a thorough selection in terms of content and if the proposal has relevance in the community and can be presented on a national level, among others.

C h a r l e s S a l a z a r, Subcommission on Culture Heritage said that they are here in Cagayan de Oro to encourage project proposals from Mindanao. He said that Luzon cannot only be the source of proposals in the country. Further, they would like to target other parts of the country as they are equally rich with culture and arts as well.

Further, projects to be funded must capture the

aspiration of the arts and culture community with the NCCA’s vision for the 21st century with the theme, “Filipino culture as the wellspring of national and global well-being.”

Further, projects must also establish culture as pillar of sustainable development, advance cre at iv it y and diversity of artistic expression and promote a strong sense of nationhood and pride in being Filipino through culture and arts.

ALVAR, Batangas – Yamaha Motors Philippines (YMPH) recently launched its newest creations, the Yamaha XTZ 125 and Serow 250, two motorcycle models that guarantee high performance, reliability, and at the same time, affordable for Philippine market.

First showcased at the Yamaha International Show last month, both the XTZ 125 and Serow 250 are dual sp or ts bi kes t hat b o ast great rides on city roads and on rough terrain.

The XTZ 125 is powered by a 125cc single cylinder air-cooled engine which produces 12.5 PS @ 8000 RPM and 11.6Nm @ 6500 RPM. Optimized for going on off road adventures, the XTZ 125 offers efficient performance coupled with an 11-liter fuel tank. In addition, it is equipped with 80/90-21 (front) and 110/80-18 (rear) tire configuration for optimum handling on various road conditions. “ The unit assures an easy, safe and comfortable ride with its compact body, stable full HT steel frame and engine guard,” Mr. Osugi said.

The Serow 250, on the other hand, features

excellent maneuverability suited for mountain trails.

T h e m a x i mu m tu r n i ng angle of the bike’s handlebar is 51 degrees and it has a short wheelbase of 1,360 mm.

The Serow 250 is propelled by an aircooled single cylinder fuel-injected engine and with a low-seat height of 810mm to suit a wide range of riders.

“The maximum turning angle of the bike’s handlebar is 51 degrees. It has a short wheelbase (1,360 mm) and a tight turning radius,” Mr. Osugi also added.

The bike also features a powerful torque and a fuel-injec ted engine. It assures an easy ride with low-seat height of 810 mm.

It has a fuel capacity of 9.8 liters.

The XZT 125 is now available with a suggested retail price of P81,900, and interested buyers will get

their hands on the Serow 250 real soon, since it will be offered in September with the suggested price of P229,000.

The ZXT 125 is available in white and blue while the Serow 250 comes in beige or white/green.

The launching ceremony last week was held simultaneous with Yamaha Off-Road Media Day, attended by invited media personalities from all over the country.

Among the activities during the day was the plant tour that familiarized members of the press on t he a c tu a l ass e mbly of motorcycles.

In c on s on an c e w it h company’s high standard, a s i n g l e m ot orc y c l e i s assembled between 2:33 minutes to 2:44 minutes, the longest is 3:47 minutes for new brands, like the XZT 125 and Serow 250.

The event also featured different activities, which were highlighted by the Enduro Race, where Spyder provided the goggles for t h e p a r t i c i p a nt s w h i l e Yamaha gave the helmets.

Nestle, SMC most preferred employers by most Filipinos PHILIPPINE business giants San Miguel Corp. (SMC) and Nestle Philippines are the most preferred employers by most of Filipinos looking for jobs because these firms traditionally give high salary, good benefits, and maintain credible reputation.

In a survey conducted by top online job site JobStreet.

com, diversified conglomerate SMC topped the list of most preferred employers in the country today, followed

by Nestle Philippines, the local unit of world’s leading nutrition, health and wellness company.

SMC in talks to sell back 49% PAL stake SAN Miguel Corp. is in talks with billionaire Lucio Tan to sell back its stake in Philippine Airlines, Inc., a move that would free up capital for the Philippines’ biggest company.

“They’re offering to buy us out. Talks are ongoing,” San Miguel President Ramon S. Ang said in a mobile-phone message. The company is “not in talks to buy them,” he said.

San Miguel has announced almost $8 billion in acquisitions since 2000 and is prepared to spend as much as $10 billion more to buy assets in Southeast Asia as it moves further from the food-andbeverage industry and into energy and infrastructure.

The company purchased

its 49 percent stake in the Philippines’ largest airline from Tan two years ago for $500 million.

Returning the stake “will free up more capital for San Miguel’s other businesses,” April Lee-Tan, research head for COL Financial, said by phone. “The airline business is capital- intensive. It will help them preserve some capital.”

Buying back San Miguel’s stake in the carrier would be a change in direction for Tan, who said last year that he was considering offers for his remaining 51 percent stake, signaling his potential exit from the airline industry after two decades.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported July 28 that Tan was trying to raise funds to buy back San Miguel’s stake, adding that San Miguel may buy out Tan if he can’t come up with the money.

Who Has the Last Word?

T

hink a Minute…Someone said: “Death is the worst part of life!” A famous entertainer once said: “I’m not afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens!” Unfortunately, when it’s our time to die we don’t have any choice but to be there! Death is a fact of life that none of us can escape! Sooner or later, every one of us is going to stand alone and look death in the face!

Don’t forget, the statistics and chances of death are 100%, it never fails: one out of every one people die! No one has ever gotten out of it alive! It doesn’t matter how rich, powerful, strong, or healthy we are—we’re all going to die! It may be a few more years or next week. So are you ready now?

But almost worse than the fact of death is the fear of death. In the back of our minds we know that every day we’re getting closer and closer to the day we die. But is our death the end of us?

Does death have the last word? Does it destroy our plans for living and take away all our hope? The answer’s quite simple: it depends on how and who you’re living for.

The Plight of the Workers in Jobsites

T

he welfare and condition of workers in job sites today are in a sorry state, prompting lawmakers to propose the Occupational Safety and Health in the Construction Industry Act. Authored by Rep. Karlo Alexei Nograles (1st District, Davao City), House Bill 4594 seeks to require every construction project to establish a construction safety and health program.

This is very laudable.

It is common knowledge that numerous occupational hazards and risks continuously pose threats to safety of workers in the workplace. The Bill seeks the introduction of new technologies, materials, and substances by project builders in their workplaces.

The lawmaker has a very viable reason for the provision because there is a high rate of worksite accidents that may occur if there are no suitable

editorial measures or interventions in place to prevent related accidents and injuries.

The measure is timely because the construction industry is expected to double its growth rate by 2015, with hundreds of billions worth of infrastructure projects b e i n g p u s h e d t h ro u g h public-private partnerships programs by the government.

It is a welcome news that, every job site should soon have a construction safety and health committee and its composition shall be posted at the entrance of the construction site.

In the said proposal, the construction safety and health committee are to be composed of the project manager, construction safety officer, construction safety

officer representing each const r uc tor, physici an, nurse, certified first-aider, and dentist and workers representatives.

Also very deserving is its added provision, that the committee members shall always be present at the construction site and shall convene at regular intervals to effectively plan, develop, oversee, and monitor the i mpl e me nt at i on of t he construction safety and health program.

It is indeed very necessary that every employee shall be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE), free of charge for eyes, face, hands and feet, lifeline, safety belt, harness and protective shields whenever necessary.

Qualified occupational

health personnel should be employed by the constructors with the required medical supplies, equipment and facilities based on the total number of workers on site.

Also, construction safety signages and devices shall be posted in prominent positions at strategic locations, understandable to all to warn the workers and the public of hazards in the workplace according to Nograles. He added that the employer shall provide a worker’s welfare facilities, such as adequate supply of safety drinking water, sanitary and washing facilities, suitable l iv i ng a c c om m o d at i on , as may be applicable; and separate sanitary, washing and sleeping facilities for men and women worker, as may be applicable.

Construction companies earn so much. They should now take to task the welfare of workers at the job sites.

As the woman featured by President Aquino in his fifth State of the Nation Address who supposedly benefitted from his “disbursement acceleration program” or DAP because it was DAP that allegedly funded her studies at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), she should come out and explain things.

I mean, there are very compelling evidence which have come out lately that she went to TESDA and graduated therein in 2009

yet, long before Aquino became President in 2010, and long before DAP was even conceived, thereby disputing Aquino’s claim that she also benefitted from the DAP. Why is she totally silent about these matters now?

Navarrosa must come out and answer questions to clarify whether Aquino lied in his fifth SONA about her TESDA schooling. The first question: when did she really start studying at TESDA? Second question: When did she graduate from TESDA? Third question: why did she agree to be featured in Aquino’s fifth SONA, as a beneficiary of DAP, if she went to TESDA before Aquino became president and before DAP was even born?

Seek God First Jesus Christ has been there and done that. He walked right into the grave and jaws of death…and came right back out alive! Jesus Christ, not death, is the One Who has the last word. He’s the only person in history who could do it—for one simple reason: He’s God Himself.

So we never again have to fear death! You see, if you’re living His way every day in a personal relationship with Him, Jesus said He’s going to lead you safely through death into eternal life with Him. Will death have the last word in your life? Not if you choose to live for Jesus Christ! Only Jesus can get you through death—safe and alive! Only He speaks the last word! And it’s the hurst/PAGE 7

his should be the proper attitude to have. It does not mean that with it all will be fine and perfect in our life.

There’s always the possibility that seeking him does not end with finding him.

Or even when we find him, we can still misunderstand or misread his mind and fail to follow what he tells and shows us.

We should expect some drama at least in this regard, not to mention that we can still commit grave mistakes even in our effort to seek God first. There have been, for example, people who in their frenzied search for God end up self-righteous, becoming hateful instead both to God and to men. Our history is full of cases like this, with special mention of the chosen people.

It can also happen that even while ignoring God and

even campaigning against him, as was the case of Saul before he became St. Paul, God can enter into one’s life in some dramatic fashion. It’s a case of not seeking God, and yet finding God. We can be surprised by God. This, of course, gives us a lot of hope, since even in the worst of scenarios that our abused freedom can produce, the likes of the story of the conversion of St. Paul show that God never abandons us.

He actually intervenes in our life always, sometimes in an extraordinary way. He can change things in some drastic ways if need be.

Still the proper attitude to have is to seek God first and let all our other concerns follow after that. This would put us and our concerns on the right track in life, in spite of whatever. After all, God through Christ told us

clearly: “Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mt 6,33) We should not expect God to intervene in our life in some extraordinary way, since the ordinary ways of seeking and finding him in our daily duties and concerns are all available. And indeed it has for the resilient, ever-daring, unfearing, God-loving Leyteños and Samareños after the storm surge of typhoon Yolanda, like a thief in the night, claimed the lives of thousands of them on that fatal morning of November 8, 2013.

For those who survived the tragedy -though heart-searing to recall -- it was a battle to win and winning comes in many forms according to one’s skill and talent. And so it is with Archie Malate also known as Franchize, whose heart was boldened and bursting at the seams, and his talent whetted in his endeavor to express in the God-given medium to him.

Franchize, a native of Tacloban City is a self-made rap artist, composer, and record producer, whose compositions are expressive of his feelings and delivers them with gusto. When asked if he is an artist, he shyly smiled and said, “a developing one.” And so he grew and developed with the years, nurtured by his observation of those in the music industry, spending hard-earned money to attend their

shows and watch their concerts in order to learn. After well-nigh 12 years his efforts are paying off. It may be recalled that Franchize has composed songs for movies, televisions, and different business entities. He has also taken under his tutelage rappers Shehyee, Harlem and Juan Lazy who have finally earned names in the local scene, having gained knowledge and experience during their time and stint with Franchize’s independent record label FLEE Entertainment.

Currently, it is observed that Franchize is making a name for himself, almost fulfilling the peak of his ambition. His debut single YAKA was recently released on the digital market in preparation for his upcoming album under GMA Records.

YAKA is a song he wrote dedicated to the survivors of the devastating typhoon Yolanda. This song is already on the airwaves and its music video which was directed by Dolero just recently premiered on Myx music channel. The music video was shot among the ships -fronting his house -which were ferociously

Seeking God first obviously triggers off a series of things. We soon will realize that we have to know him through the study of his revelation, the doctrine of our faith. Then we have to avail of the sacraments, develop the virtues and wage a lifelong ascetical struggle to keep ourselves safe from sin and always united with him.

Especially in the area of politics, if God is not sought as a first priority, we cannot help but tear ourselves into unavoidable conflict, division and fragmentation.

It’s in areas like politics where the need to seek God first should be most intensely felt.

Seeking God first does not mean that we will have everything in uniformity.

God allows and in fact loves variety and dif ferences of views, condition, circumstances. These are nothing but part of our human condition. But God knows how put them in unity for the good of the parties involved and of everyone else, the common good.

Let us remember that God is the very foundation of reality. Everything is under his providence, including

Education is another program created to bring advocacies on education reform closer to Filipino people. It is one strategy designed by education department in order to provide “education for all.”

In realizing this, Department of Education sought supports from Philippines Business for Education (PBEd), Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), believing that collaboration among them would result in improving access and quality basic education.

This advocacy has long been started. It further aims to address

the need to inform and engage the general public and its internal stakeholders in its mission in providing Education for All in the Philippines.

There are three prime components focused in the program. These are curriculum enhancements through K to 12 Basic Education program, provision of sufficient resources to eliminate basic education input gaps and improvements to quality of teachers and teaching.

There are various methods most educators used in discussions. In some ways, these methods are not just made to upgrade form of teaching to student attract attention and interest in listening.

Examples are slideshows, v i d e o s or mov i e s and PowerPoint presentation, a tool that displays multiple slides with written information pieces in it.

The internet exploration is also famous in these times.

There are situations like a teacher will just give a link or page in a site to the students and the latter will just study the content. This form helps the student to learn independently.

The small group discussion is also considered as an effective avenue of learning.

This technique let students form a group and require them to discuss topics on their own. This could be done after a teacher introduced a topic for a short period of time.

Thereafter, the rest that are not discussed will be tackled in a small group.

Though can be called traditional, but this is a fair method because each idea of an individual could be heard.

Method like this could also boost confidence and selftrust of the students.

Each student has mind that evolves together with time due to modernization that makes learning and at the same time, teaching, more complex. Truly, educating today’s minds is a great challenge to educators.

Mindanao vies for Guinness World record with 4.6-M trees planted DAVAO C I T Y - – T h e Mindanao Development Aut hor ity (MinDA) and t he D epar tment of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 11 (DENR-11) will take the lead in the tree planting activity on September 26, targeting 4.63 million trees planted in an hour in 289 sites in Mindanao to beat current world record with most trees planted.

D E N R- 1 1 re g i on a l executive director Joselin Fragada said the project dubbed as “TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW” under t h e Nat i on a l Gre e n i ng Program of the government will gather 230,000 Mindanao stakeholders to simultaneously plant t re es in 9,200 he c t ares (multiple sites in Mindanao), including the Autonomous Region of Musl i m Mi nd ana o (ARMM).

This means 25 people will plant tree seedlings per hectare. Each will plant 20 seedlings.

While the project is an attempt to break Guinness World record being held

by India, Fragada said it is aimed at raising awareness among Mindanawons on the importance of trees in protecting the environment by reforesting Mindanao.

India currently holds the title with 1,945,535 trees planted in one hour participated in by 340,200 people across 408 sites.

Fragada said they already enrolled their bid and it was acknowledged

by Guinness last we ek.

Ac c ord i n g t o Fr a g a d a , they already held a mock simultaneous tree planting last June 26 (Arbor Day) and achieved 800,000

mangrove and other native tree seedlings planted in Davao region.

DENR has partnered with MinDa for the mobilization of stakeholders comprising of prov i nc i a l, c it y and mu n i c ip a l g ov e r n m e nt officials, government organizations, and nongovernment organizations for participation.

Fragada was optimistic it will achieve the target; however, he said it is most important that Mindanao achieves the objective of making the people of Mindanao part of a larger effort to reforest the region. “ We a r e u s i n g t h i s attempt as a vehicle to at t r a c t p e o p l e t o h e l p mitigate what is happening i n o u r e n v i r o n m e n t ,” Fragada said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw held at SM Davao Annex.

He added they also want to achieve the survival rate target of 80 to 85 percent of the trees planted.

“It is useless to keep on planting to have a record.

One of the components is to teach everyone how to plant trees correctly,” he said.

Us e c . J a n e t L o p o z , executive director of MinDa said the projec t is als o in line with the program MindaNOW which is aiming to plant trees in 680,815 hectares and reach at least 30 percent forest c ove r a s e nv i s i one d i n Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan.

Lopoz said the number of planters and the area to be covered would still increase because they are expecting more enrollees such as from the s cho ols. Currently, 400 municipalities have already

enrolled in the event.

Lopoz said the event will hopefully instill in the consciousness of people e c o l o g i c a l i nt e g r it y a s

climate change adaptation.

They have also encouraged planting of specific tree s p e c i e s s u c h a s c a c a o, coffee and rubber to boost

production of these crops.

Other partner organizations for the project are the Department of Agriculture, National

Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) and Depar tment of Interior and L o ca l G over nment (DILG). (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -A reporting system has been created by the Department of S o c i a l We l f are an d Development (DSWD) to improve its data collection and dissemination during disasters.

Being the lead in disaster response, particularly on relief, early recovery, and rehabilitation, the DSWD’s staf f f rom Visayas and

Mindanao underwent a reorientation on the disaster re p or t i n g s y s t e m , l a s t July 29-31, 2014, here to familiarize themselves on the system and be prepared for any disasters that may hit the country in the future.

Various applications, which have been developed by its internal information and communications staff, are now being introduced to

its workforce, particularly those compatible for the web, non-android and android phones.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Javier Jimenez said that the reporting system enables the Department to collect and process data from the fields and enables it to provide a more accurate and real-time information to its partners and to the public. “We are proactively creating this so that we can

now be more efficient in our disaster response whenever calamity strikes our country,” he added.

With the past challenges the country has faced on disaster response in the last four years until present, DSWD is strengthening its services to internally d i spl a c e d p e rs ons and affected communities by applying the new disaster reporting system.(CSLPT/ RTP/PIA10)

Declared winners were Nedyr Ryle G. Ilisan of Feliza C. Ma (FCM) School, 1st place; Mariella Gerlie Wamil, Ozamiz City Seventh Day Adventist Elementary School (OCSDAES), 2nd place; and Sophia Baudelie Joy C. Go, United Church of Christ of the Philippines (UCCP), 3rd place.

In the case of The Heirs of Simpan Umpa, Represented by Salonga Umpa vs. Mildra Martin, Civil Case No. 21-88 and filed with this Court, a Decision was then rendered, dated Novemebr 13, 1998, the fallo of which reads:

“WHEREFORE, premises considered ,judgment is hereby rendered in favor of the plaintiffs and against the defendant as follows: 1. Declaring the plaintiffs, heirs of Simpan Umpa, as the owners and, therefore, entitled to the possession of the subject parcel of land containing an area of about 2.4 hectares located at Magpatao, Lala, Lanao del Norte; 2. Ordering the defendant to reconvey to plaintiffs the subject land now covered by OCT No. P-9526 which was issued in the name of the defendant; 3. Ordering defendant to pay plaintiffs the amounts of Thirty Thousand Pesos ( P30,000.00) as attorney’s fees and expenses of litigation; and 4. To pay the costs of suits.”

On April 28, 2005, an Entry of Judgment was issued. Plaintiffs, however, did not file a motion for execution of the afore-quoted Judgment within the reglementary period of five years from the issuance of the entry of judgment. On August 2, 2013, or after eight years from entry thereof, this Action was instituted based on Section 6, Rule 39 of the Rules of Court which provides that:

“ Sec. 6. Execution by motion or by Independent action. -- A final and executory judgment or order may be executed on motion within five (5) days from the date of its entry. After the lapse of such time, and before it is barred by the statute of limitations, a judgment may be enforced by action. The revived judgment may also be enforced by motion within five (5) years from the date of its entry and thereafter by action before it is barred by the statute of limitations. (6a)”

After complying with the jurisdictional requirements, an ex-parte hearing was had on April 4, 2014 where the Plaintiffs’ representative testified on the fact that she was the representative of the Plaintiffs in case of The Heirs of Simpan Umpa, Represented by Salonga Umpa vs. Mildra Martin, docketed as Civil Case No. 21-88 and filed with this Court, and a Decision was then rendered, dated November 13, 1998; that said Decision was not executed within the reglementary period; and that this action for revival was filed within the reglementary period.

Going over the evidence, the Plaintiffs were able to establish their cause of action for revival of judgment , hence, entitling the Plaintiffs to the main reliefs being prayed for. This Court, however , will not grant the other reliefs which were not the subject of the fallo of the Decision sought to be revived. This is in accord with the pronouncement in the case of Heirs of Numeriano Miranda vs. Pablo Mirandoa where it was held that:

“An action for revival of a judgment cannot modify, alter, or reverse the original judgment, which is already final and executory.”

WHEREFORE, based on the foregoing, judgment is hereby rendered, reviving the Decesion, dated November 13, 1998 in The Heirs of Simpan Umpa, Represented by Salonga Umpa vs. Mildra Martin, docketed as Civil Case No. 21-88, which reads:

“WHEREFORE, premises considered, judgment is hereby in favor of the plaintiffs and against the defendant as follows: 5. Declaring the plaintiffs, heirs of Simpan Umpa, as the owners and, therefore, entitled to the possession of the subject parcel of land containing an area of about 2.4 hectares located at Magpatao, Lala, Lanao del Norte.

PH Jesuits to discuss current issues, celebrate SJ Restoration’s bicentennial

he Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus will hold a forum to tackle the present challenges of the Jesuits and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the Society at the Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (SEARSOLIN) Complex of Xavier University on August 6-7.

In a letter circulated by Jesuits Provincial Superior Fr Antonio F Moreno SJ, the forum is “foreseen as an opportunity to concretize a Province roadmap … and looks forward to the wider, more universal concerns of the Society and the Church that the Province should be taking into consideration as it moves ahead.”

The two-day event includes a discussion on the strengths and responsibilities of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines and in Asia, the various challenges the Jesuits need to address and the directions they will pursue.

The panel will be composed of Fr Mark Raper SJ, president of Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific (JCAP), Mary Racelis of the Institute on Philippine Culture (IPC), John Nery of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) and Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Most Rev Antonio J Ledesma SJ, DD.

The event also serves as an opportunity for the Jesuits to recollect and reflect from the challenges they have surpassed and their achievements over the years.

The last day of the forum will deal with the Provincial’s goals and planning, integration with the Province Congregation and the different pronouncements from Pope Francis, among others.

Remembering the Society’s Restoration The Provincial forum will conclude with a mass celebrating the bicentennial of the Society’s Restoration.

During this year’s Red Mass, XU president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ explained in his homily the significance of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus.

“The Jesuits were restored in 1814 because, forty-one years earlier, in 1773, the Pope abolished the Society of Jesus. In his papal brief of July 21st 1773, “Dominus ac Redemptor,” Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits worldwide (including those in the Philippines) were expelled except in the Russia of Catherine the Great who refused to promulgate the papal decree in her territory.”

The curtailment of the Society

happened during the time when there were numerous tensions between the Church and the different European royal states, as kings and princes were already “getting fed up” with the Church’s thirst for political control and wealth.

The Society of Jesus, at that time had over 22,000 members, became the first religious institution to have been inflicted by the papal suppression.

“Why was the Society targeted during that fight? She was the most developed and powerful religious congregation. The Society was especially dangerous because she was the educator of the youth all over Europe and America (700 schools in all). The Society had been very close to the political powers, as some Jesuits were spiritual directors of kings and princes. To suppress the Society was to weaken the Church in one of her most decisive institutions,” Fr Bobby continued.

After 41 years, on Aug 7, 1814, came the official restoration of the Jesuits with Pope Pius VII’s issuance of “Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum,” the papal bull by which he reinstated the Society worldwide.

Gratitude, renewal and mission This year marks the 200th an-

niversary of the Restoration with the motto “Ite inflammata omnia” (Go, set the world on fire).

Fr Bobby related the reflection of Jesuits Superior General Fr General Adolfo Nicolás on this commemoration: “He does not want a restoration of the glory of the Society. Something has to die of the desires of power, security, and worldly ambitions. Rather Fr Nico wishes that during this anniversary, we make an effort to live more profoundly the spiritual aspects of our vocation.”

The celebration’s maxim was the same line said by St Ignatius Loyola to his good friend, St Francis Xavier when the Society’s founder sent Xavier on a mission to the Far East. “‘Set the world on fire’ is a curious expression,” Fr Bobby shared.

“Fire provides warmth during cold nights. But fire also destroys. … Fire purifies too; flames burn up the weeds and the refiner’s fire purifies gold. Fire also signifies passion as when we say that people are set afire with vigor and zeal. These different effects of fire can elucidate the three themes of this bicentennial: gratitude, renewal and mission.”

economic growth in 2013 decelerated from 8.1% the previous year.

Only the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanano and Region 12 (Soccsksargen) posted increases in GRDP from 2012 to 2013 at 1.1% to 3.6% and 8% to 8.4%, respectively.

The four other Mindanao Regions -- 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 11 (Davao), and 13 (Caraga) -- all registered a decline in that two-year period.

Zamboanga posted the biggest GRDP drop from 12.9% to 4.3% due to a slowdown in its industry and service sectors.

Zamboanga is one of the hardest hit areas in the Mindanao power supply problem, and the armed conflict in the regional center Zamboanga City between military forces and a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front has taken serious toll on the region’s economy.

Mindanao was also hit by two strong typhoons in 2011 and 2012, affecting agricultural production.

Ms. Lopoz said MinDA is pushing the national government to sustain its investments in these areas.

Degan said that for now, the Siargao event has gotten a one-star ranking. He admitted it is a low rank, “but at least we are part of the world circuit.”

“The ASP sanction would mean that more world class surfers who are participating in the world circuit would come here and participate,” he added.

Last year, the Asian Surfing Championship (ASC) gave Siargao a six-star ranking, making it one of the qualifying stops for the Asian Circuit, Degan noted. “This year it would be both ASP and ASC, so we are expecting around 64 international surfers to come and compete,” he said.

Donna Grace Estrella, Siargao tourism coordinator, expressed her optimism for the upcoming event.

“After 20 years, this will be the biggest surfing competition here in General Luna (in Siargao) and more international surfers will experience why Cloud 9 is considered one of the best surfing spots in the international surfing scene,” she added.

Estrella said they are expecting 5,000 to 8,000 people to witness the event, and the island is busy preparing to accommodate all those visitors.

As of now, Siargao has around 70 small resorts and additional rooms from homestay amenities, she said, adding that some more resorts are now being constructed.

Dane Jordan, ASP Australasia general manager, said in the surfersvillage.com website: “I’ve been lucky enough to see Cloud 9 first hand and it truly is one of the world’s best waves.”

Komang Putra Hermawan, from Lembongan Island in Bali, Indonesia, won the US$5,000 cash prize last year after a fierce final round against Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala, a native of General Luna.

“That wave at Cloud 9 is really good, surfing Cloud 9 is like surfing my home break in Nusa Lembongan. Last year was my first time to surf at Cloud 9 and I’m so stoked to win the event in really fun barrels. I’m so excited to go back there again,” expressed Hermawan in an online news.

Officer, said during the conduct of the regional search for the Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya on August 1, here, that aside from having family representatives from the region who possess all the qualities of a model family, DSWD also aims to instill into the minds of the family-beneficiaries that they too can help their community by becoming an example to other beneficiaries.

To become a nominee of the said search, the Filipino family must be a beneficiary of the Program for at least two years. They should also have a good standing in the community with no derogatory records.

Furthermore, the income of the family must not come from gambling, prostitution, child labor, extortion and other similar resources. Lastly, they should be 100% compliant to the program’s conditions.

In Region 10, DSWD has five family-beneficiary nominees including the Tejero family from Bukidnon; Napone family, Camiguin; Ontoy family, Lanao del Norte; Tinae family, Misamis Occidental; and Vacalares family for Misamis Oriental.

Among the five nominees, the Napone family from Camiguin brought home the victory being able to show exemplary values, practices and involvement in their community. They will then serve as the official nominee of the Field Office for the national competition.

The Tejero family bagged the second place while the Tinae family settled on the third place.

According to the survey, salary is the foremost reason why candidates across all position levels, from fresh graduates to managers, want to work for these companies.

Salary is the number one reason why people choose a certain company. All of these are about perceptions.

Apparently, it is the number one driver of people looking for jobs,” JobStreet marketing director Yolanda Rabe Buyco told reporters.

Buyco also said that benefits and company reputation came in second and third as a workplace consideration for the respondents.

More than 5,673 JobStreet. com members participated in the survey conducted by the online job site in May. Of all the respondents, Buyco specified that 25 percent chose SMC, eight percent chose Nestle, Procter and Gamble and Coca-Cola both had eight percent, and Accenture got six percent, among other companies.

“We want to tell the people who are the most admired companies. So other companies will also follow these admired companies and be like them,” she said, adding that they are mulling over a plan to do a survey on the Philippine companies who give highest salary.
