Speaking during the Cocofed Scholars National Convention in Cagayan de Oro City on Saturday, Villar, who is chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said she had filed a bill in the Senate that would allow the use of the multibillionpeso coco levy funds and assets to help benefit about 3.5 million coconut farmers in the country, which were considered as among the poorest of all farmers. “On the average, coconut farmers earn P50 a day. With this bill and intercropping, which we are introducing to them, we hope to be able to help them augment their earnings later on,” Villar told about 300 Cocofed scholars
attending the event. “Ngayon po ay tina-try nating ipasa, how we release the fund na nagkakahalaga ng P100-billion para matulungan ang ating mga coconut farmers,” Villar, who just filed five agricultural bills since the resumption of the Senate session in July this year, said. Under Villar’s version of the coco levy bill, portion of the fund would be used for scholarship programs f o r f a r m e r ’s c h i l d r e n [the cocofed scholarship program], for the purpose of producing new generation and trained farmers coming from farming families. “Para naman ang agriculture natin ay fund/PAGE 11
