Briefly Therma U1 to undergo maintenance activity THE 150-MW Unit 1 of the 300-MW Davao baseload power plant of Therma South Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of AboitizPower (AP), will undergo a maintenance outage starting August 22, 2016, for preventive maintenance activities.

“This maintenance activity is necessary to review Unit 1 and to implement some corrective measures as needed which should be similar in nature to the coverage of work done in the recently planned outage of Unit 2 from June 18 to July 13,” said Sebastian R. Lacson, TSI President, and COO. The maintenance activity is estimated to last until September 7.

“We are confident that after this outage, TSI should be better equipped to reliably meet the needs of our customers. As always, we will try our best to keep the duration of this interruption to a minimum,” added Lacson.

Originally scheduled to start August 6, the Unit 1 maintenance schedule was moved to August 22 to better adjust to the grid situation.

TSI is coordinating with its customers – electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in Mindanao – in order to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the maintenance activity.

Eight-point agenda on labor, employment bared Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III yesterday revealed his initial Eight-Point Platform and Policy Agenda to ensure inclusive de velopment, prosperity, and labor justice for Filipino workers and their families.

augmentation of the CEED. In line with this, the city government is set to implement the rehabilitation of Cogon Market where the re-sectioning of the food and cafeteria will be prioritized.

For 21 years I had known it all along in my life as a teacher that students life will be transformed, made more useful, productive and powerful.

As an inspiration to my students, I made them more comfortable by being so approachable. Encourage, support and most especially challenge those who are seemingly discouraged.

I intend to provide my students with a life-changing experience. I want to be renowned for my exceptional teaching skills and for getting my students actively engaged in their own learning.”

With my unique skill in classroom- management I see to it that I have fully invested my student’s learning. The importance of encouraging students to work together and learn from each other. I met so many of my lifelong friends and developed numerous relationships important to my career in school that I wanted to give my students every opportunity to do the same.

Ice breaker exercises, talent showcasing, encouraging students to participate in every school activities.

As I’ve known that school is

a little world in society it is my role in forming social skills of my students. Since students’ personal tragedies intrude in their school and successes, I can’t help but get involved.

1. within the first two weeks of the semester and discuss their responses to the questionnaire. Some of the best teaching is done outside the classroom.

2. C l a s s r o o m Atmosphere. Convey your passion and enthusiasm for the subject and your willingness to provide individual help.

Foster a sense of belonging and respect. Encourage high performance and promote active engagement. For a small class, give the students a sense of community by sitting in a circle. Create a safe, nurturing environment in which students feel free to experiment and fail.

3. Classroom Specifics.

Show up early for class, take attendance, and end class on time. Start class by asking a student to summarize the main points from the last class, and end by summarizing what was accomplished. Write the plan for the class on the board. Have students stand up and stretch, occasionally play brief games,

and, when possible, take field trips as a class.

4. C l a s s r o o m Interactions. Make the class as interactive as possible to transform the students from passive observers to active players. Constantly call on individual students by name to answer questions without first asking for volunteers. This keeps the whole class alert.

Encourage the shy students to speak; don’t allow long-winded or loud students to dominate the conversation. Listen to students actively during discussion.

5. Beyond the Classroom.

Manage your office hours: encourage students to drop by even if they don’t have specific questions; have a sign-up sheet on your door so students don’t have to wait.

Reach out to students who miss a class. Be responsive to emails and calls from students and give students meaningful and meaty comments on homework assignments.

celebrates 1st Intensified NGCP safety campaign CEB baby born inflight lessens electrocution cases Awards 1 million GetGo points to Baby ‘Haven’

ILIGAN CIT Y -- With an improved line safety campaign focusing on public engagement and a new media approach, National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is registering a decrease in electrocution incidents involving power transmission facilities across the country.

Information sessions focusing on transmission line safety and right-of-way were conducted in barangays and local government units identified as crucial to NGCP operations, particularly project completion. A steady decline of electrocution incidents was observed, from a peak of 29 in 2012 to a 5-year low of 17 in 2015. No employee-related accidents were also recorded for 2015 and 2016, as of press time.

For the first semester of 2016 alone, the nationwide campaign has reached 120 barangays, 474 media outfits, and 320 local government units. In the weeks leading up to the national elections in May, NGCP also carried out 12 forums in COMELECidentified election hotspots to reiterate line safety reminders and to increase public vigilance against ROW violations.

The campaign is in the process of widening its audience reach with NGCP’s partnership with the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for the free airing of NGCP safety videos in cinemas nationwide.

Civilians, particularly the mobile-savvy generation, a r e a l s o c o nt i nu o u s l y

being encouraged to report transmission-related incidents with the launch of the 0917-TIPNGCP (09178476427) / 0918-TIPNGCP (0918-8476427) hotline and email (TIPNGCP@ngcp.ph).

While the campaign resulted in a decrease of electrocution incidents, NGCP noted the increase of transmission line and tower parts pilferage since 2014. In 2015 alone, 13 incidents of stolen parts from transmission lines, substations, and other related facilities were reported to NGCP. Five cases have been reported from January to May 2016.

NGCP is very pleased to re p or t t he p o s it ive development in line with our safety advocacy to lower electrocution incidents, we continue to warn the public to respect transmission line clearances. We are also concerned with the prevailing increase of pilferage of our tower parts and lines. This greatly reduces the safety and reliability of our operations, not just in the local area, but on a national scale. We are appealing to the public to support our cause and help prevent power interruptions by reporting theft and pilferage of NGCP facilities to 0917-TIPNGCP (8476427) or 0918-TIPNGCP,” stated NGCP. Republic Act 7832 or the Anti-Electricity and Electric Transmission Lines/ Materials Pilferage Act of 1994 prohibits the possession, control, or custody of electric power transmission line/material by any person not engaged in the transmission or distribution

CEBU Pacific celebrates the birth of a baby girl, born while the aircraft was halfway from Dubai to Manila. This is the first time a baby has been delivered onboard a CEB aircraft.

Baby girl ‘Haven’ was born approximately four hours after the departure of flight 5J015 from the Dubai International Airport last Sunday, August 14, 2016. CEB cabin crew, along with two registered nurses who were also passengers on the flight,

assisted with the delivery.

The flight diverted to Hyderabad, India, to ensure the mother and baby received medical assistance. Both mother and baby, who was born premature at 32 weeks, are being assisted by CEB’s Customer Care team.

Get Over It Think a minute…A young mother said that she never really appreciated her parents until she had children of her own. Only then did she realize all her parents had gone through in raising her.

The sacrifices her parents made, the things they put up with and went without so they could feed and clothe her, pay her school fees, take care of her when she was sick, and the list went on and on.

But there are sometimes we can feel hurt or angry about things our parents did to us as children. Maybe you feel they were too hard and strict, or your parents treated you unfairly and differently from your brothers and sisters, or they even physically abused you. You might feel they didn’t really love you, or spend enough time with you when you were young.

Friend, it may be true that your parents treated you wrongly, so it is completely understandable that you have feelings of hurt and anger toward them. But now that you’re an adult, it’s not so much your parents but yourself whom you’re hurting by staying angry and bitter, refusing to forgive them. Unforgiveness and bitterness will only hurt yourself, because it poisons

Ma. Regaele A. Olarte has been teaching physics (Teacher I) at the Muntinlupa National High School for the last 11 years. What make her shine are her advocacies in and out of the classroom.

In school, she champions invention-driven instruction, which encourages creative thinking and problemsolving skills among her students. A budding inventor, she has designed classroom equipment using readily available materials.

Working with DepEd, Ms. Olarte has authored K to 12 learner’s modules and teachers’ guides for Grades 9 and 10 nationwide. She has also served as a writer for national achievements tests in Physics. Outside school , she actively participates in outreach programs of her church and works with the DENR and the Earth Day Network Philippines as focal person for their carbon footprint mitigation campaign.

Winona Y. Diola is a Grade 5 science teacher at the De La Salle Zobel School in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa. In 2012, Ms. Diola sp e arhe ade d t he adoption of Mobile Learning Devices as a learning tool in their school, mentoring other teachers in their use. As part of her class, she tasked her students to create landscape designs for the school garden and design prototype domes for endangered plant species.

She also creates her own iTunes U Courses, which enable students and other teachers learn science in unconventional ways. She is very active in her school’s Project E.A.R.T.H. (Each Act

Someone said that when we become adults, there comes a time when we have to “get over it.” We have to “let our parents off the hook.” We have to finally stop holding our parents on the hook of our anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness. For your own sake, you must let go of the hurt and forgive your parents, no matter what wrong and painful things they might have done to you in the past.

Recognizing that pupils learn at their own pace, he championed the adoption of balanced reading practices and provision of sufficiently challenging materials for reading. Mr. Rosales was also the proponent of Project BLISS (Banking Learning Items Systematically and Sufficiently). A theater afficionado, he has been the director and scriptwriter of several stage plays organized in the Municipality of Naujan.

Business, since it is an important part of our life, should be done to serve the common good. That is why the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church dedicates a big section to this topic of morality and the economy.

In one point of the Compendium, it is said that “the relation between morality and economics is necessary, indeed intrinsic: economic activity and moral behavior are intimately joined one to the other.” (331) We can go to the extent that business not only serves the needs of people. It also is way of sanctification, a path to heaven, an occasion to get truly in touch and with great intimacy with God. It should be redeemed from being simply done in a materialistic and godless way, expressed in terms of money and profit alone. That would be an inhuman business that would sooner or later convert us into objects or targets, and not anymore as persons, and much less as children of God. Rather, business should a c t i v e l y c ont r i b ut e i n making people fulfill their

true dignity as persons and children of God, and not just as workers and consumers though these also enter into their being persons and children of God. The Compendium further clarifies that “the necessary distinction between morality and the economy does not entail the separation of these two spheres but, on the contrary, an important reciprocity.”

Given the big tendency today for us not only to separate the two but also to put them in conflict, this doctrine is very relevant.

Quite often we are forced to make a choice between the two. We are made to believe they cannot be together.

Everyone of us, in the different levels and aspects of life, from the individual to all levels of collectivity that we get involved in, should realize that we need to be well grounded in the correct delineation of the link between morality and spirituality, on the one hand, and the economy, on the other hand.

We cannot remain naïve in this regard. We cannot anymore afford to stay

primitive in this concern.

Those involved more in the promotion of morality – priests and teachers – should be mindful of the objective needs of economics and should foster rather than obstruct their fulfillment.

So they should try their best also to know more and more about economics – its laws and different doctrinesso they could attune their teaching and counsels to concrete conditions of the people, and not remain only in theories that hardly have any impact on real situations.

We are now into an interdisciplinary way of life.

We should continue our education and formation, updating ourselves with the endless flow of developments that are now also monitored more closely by our new technologies.

Those working more directly in the economy – employees and employers, businessmen, investors, etcetera – should also be mindful of the requirements of morality. They just cannot remain in the le vel of practicality and profitability.

They have to know the deeper needs of men and learn to

Over 300,000 SSS numbers issued to online applicants

T

HE Social Security System (SSS) has issued more than 300,000 membership numbers thru its website in just nine months after launching the online service in September last year, as current and future workers take advantage of the faster and more convenient way to get their social security (SS) number.

S S S A s s i s t a n t Vi c e President and Of f icerin-Charge of the Service Delivery Department Renato N. Malto said that nearly 80 percent of about 313,000 online SS number applicants as of June 2016, were aged 18 to 26, including recent

college graduates and young adults seeking employment for the first time.

“The online issuance of SS number is part of our continuing campaign to expand our website’s capabilities to provide more convenient alternatives to over-the-counter applications. This way, members can transact with SSS electronically, instead of lining up in our branches and service offices,” Malto said.

Only individuals below age 60 can apply for SS numbers, whether in person at SSS offices or electronically via the SSS website (www.sss. gov.ph). Each member should

only have one SS number to avoid inconsistencies in their contribution records which may delay processing of their loan and benefit applications.

“The online procedure is user-friendly and makes it easy for applicants to follow the instructions. They can get their SS numbers within five to ten minutes. SS numbers issued online are tagged as temporary and can be used by employers to pay their employees’ monthly contributions,” Malto said.

To convert their temporary SS number to a permanent one, members need to present the original or certified true copy and submit a photocopy of their birth or baptismal certificate or other accepted documents displayed onscreen at the beginning

of online application, to any SSS branch. Permanent numbers are required in applying for SSS benefits and loans. The same is also required in registering for an online account in the SSS website.

Upon reaching the SSS homepage, members should click on the “No SSS number yet? Apply Online” tab at the lower middle portion.

Ap p l i c a nt s n e e d t o provide basic information such as their name, birth date and email address. Upon submission, a link will be sent to their email address which

they would need to click within five days to confirm their application; otherwise, the link will expire and the applicant will go back to step one.

To c o m p l e t e t h e registration, applicants will be asked to review the information they have encoded and make necessary corrections before the SS number would be generated by the online system.

“Applicants must b e careful with the data they encode and double-check these before submitting the online form. Once the SS number is generated, they can no longer correct online what was entered, and they would have to go through the normal process of data amendment in SSS offices,”

Malto advised.

After generating the SS number, the applicants’ personal record and SS number slip will be shown on-screen which they can print as proof of their online registration. Those who still opt for the manual application process for the SS number can go to SSS branches and service offices nationwide.

Apart from the online issuance of SS numbers, other SSS website transactions launched last year include the electronic filing of technical retirement claims for eligible members reaching age 65, and online submission of employees’ sickness and maternity notifications for web-registered employers.

BSP raises term deposit offering volume THE BANGKO SENTRAL ng Pilipinas (BSP) will increase the volume of term deposits it will auction off weekly by month’s end, as yesterday’s offer remained oversubscribed, with excess liquidity in the local financial system still apparent.

Of ferings under the term deposit facility (TDF) yesterday saw bids again surpassing the P70-billion volume set by the central bank, fetching the 2.5% floor

rate seen since the weekly offers started on June 8.

Bids for the BSP’s P10billion offer of term deposits with a seven-day tenor reached P51.08 billion, or more than five times the program. Meanwhile, bids for the 28-day term ballooned to P171.927 billion, nearly thrice the P60-billion offer.

The central bank will again put up P70 billion worth of term deposits on the auction block next

week before it raises the total volume to P90 billion

by Aug. 31 as a response to strong demand.

“The increase takes into account the sustained ample supply of liquidity in the system. It will facilitate the migration of excess funds to the TDF,” BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. said in a text message to reporters.

Broken down, the weeklong term deposits will

remain at P10 billion, while the volume for the monthlong tenor will be raised to P80 billion.

The higher volume is in keeping with an observed trend of the central bank raising its auction offers every four weeks, and will be the third hike since the facility was launched in June.

The river got its name f rom t he late Mo desto Farolan, the country’s first t ou r i s m c om m i s s i on e r (now the equivalent of tourism secretary), who was captivated by the waterway’s natural beauty and splendor during a tour, inspiring him to write a romantic poem, “Rio Encantado.”

The extraordinarily clear blue, 270-meter river flows into the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean through Hinatuan Bay. Dubbed the country’s “Little Niagara Falls” after the great chutes that straddle the Canada-United States border, the multi-tiered cascades of Tinuy-an Falls are 55 meters high and 95 meters wide – the broadest falls in the Philippines.

Sited in Barangay Burboanan, Bislig City, Tinuyan Falls has a highly diverse ecosystem that includes 235 varieties of plant and animal life, many of which have been marked “vulnerable” or “endangered.”

However, she said it is imperative that we ensure that Asean integration will be fair, workable, rational and inclusive. The challenge is bringing the benefits to those who needed it most but have been getting it the very least.

For this to be fully realized, she said the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will have to play a key and essential role.

MSMEs are the backbone of the many Asean countries accounting for more than 96 percent of all enterprises, in fact, in the Philippines, 99.6 percent, and contributing between 30-43 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

For the entire country, MSMEs employ about 60 percent of the workforce.

Thus, the largest source of domestic employment across all economic sectors both rural and urban areas.

Moreover, this sector provides more opportunities for men, women and the youth to participate in economic development in the country.

Putting MSMEs at the forefront of development is addressing the matter of poverty squarely as this cascades these benefits to ordinary people and places the premium on the goals of generating jobs and placing food on the table that what we mean “Dapat randam, angat ang lahat, walang iwanan,” as Maglaya emphasized the inclusive economic development.

Hence, Maglaya said, DTI conducted NKATBP road show in the city.

“We want to share with you, as our partners in development, our vision to increase competitiveness of MSMEs so they can be part of the domestic, regional or global value chain.

In her speech, the undersecretary also shared to the participants the 7Ms— Mindset, Mastery, Mentors, Market, Money, Machines and Models—which will help the agency and its clients in achieving this goal.

The most important of the Ms is mindset changing.

If we want to prosper, we must change our mindset towards excellence through continuous learning of better ways to improve our business, products and services. The competition sets higher standards even for the small entrepreneurs and those who do not innovate will be left behind, said Maglaya.

She then mentioned about the second and third Ms – mastery and mentoring, which she said are essential in any business because through continuous and appropriate capacity building, enterprises can further improve what they offer to the market.

The fourth M which is money, may be a solution or a problem, depending on how the entrepreneur looks at it.

That is why the government must work together with financial institutions to improve access to capital for MSMEs. In te r ms of m ar ke t access, Maglaya said that the market for Philippine goods is expanding by virtue of our trade agreements across different countries and regions; while for the small entrepreneurs, they can expand their market access by mainstreaming their products in the local market.
