Kahimunan ’17 opens THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) region 10 opened its annual regional trade fair at the Atrium of SM CDO Downtown Premier, August 18. Dubbed Kahimunan (Creations of Northern Mindanao), the trade fair features the best products of the five provinces of Northern Mindanao - Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental. Products such as processed food; crafts and fashion accessories; sugar, coffee and beverages; nuts and cashew; spices and condiments; health and organic products; and home style and living items from the five provinces are showcased during the exhibit.

Organic farming BUTUAN City -- Farmers, agricultural extension workers, local government units, researchers, exhibitors and members of the academe convened for the 3rd Regional Organic Agriculture Congress (ROAC) conducted recently in Butuan City carrying the theme “Go Organic: Sa Organikong Pamamaraan, Ligtas ang Mamayan!” The confab aims to mainstream the organic agriculture practices regionwide and encourage practitioners to obtain the Third-Party Certification in order to have better access to domestic and global markets. According to National Organic Agriculture Board (NOAB) Member Jimmy Geronimo, DA together with organic agriculture stakeholders should envision not just the five percent conversion to organic farming, but also that every household should practice and be an advocate of organic agriculture.

AVAO City – A Hong Kongbased Danish investor is eyeing to pour in some P400 million for the construction of a 12-megawatt renewable energy plant in Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao.

In an inter view with reporters Friday, Anders Haagen, Gloria Mundi Energy Farming Inc. chief executive officer, said that they will start as soon as the Department of Energy (DOE) issues the permit for the construction of the plant that will take 18 months.

He said the plant will require pearl millet-napier grasses, a hybrid imported from Malaysia, that will be mixed with wastes from corn and rice mills to be fed into the plant to produce power. He said they have a nursery in Palawan reproducing the hybrid grass that will be

distributed to farmers. He added they will help the farmers with fertilizers and harvesting equipment once plant operations start. But Haagen said they discourage farmers from intercropping the grass with other crops because the field plant/PAGE 11

THE full financial impact of the operation of the first block of its Sarangani coalfired power plant had boosted the profitability of Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc., (ACR) to P269 million in the first six months, higher by 7.0-percent from P251 million on a comparative period last year. The net income attributable to parent firm

also climbed 63 percent within the January-June stretch to P85 million from the year-ago level of P52 million. DAVAO City – Unpredictable weather patterns attributed to climate change threaten shrimp production, a co-owner of the largest homegrown shrimp grower in Davao Region said Friday. Anders Haagen, a coowner of Anderlude Seafoods

Corp., said changes in weather patterns weather concern them as these would affect the growing and production of shrimps in their three locations in the region – Dumoy in Davao City, and Sta. Cruz and Hagonoy in Davao del Sur.

“There is climate change. If we are only a farmer, then you can’t control the climate and we have experienced a lot more rain lately, we experienced a lot of things. It makes it more risky and more dangerous to be the farmer alone,” he told reporters during the opening threatens/PAGE 11
