Briefly Fight vs poverty THE Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and several national government agencies will jointly implement anti-poverty programs in the region starting this month.

In a recent cabinet meeting, President Rodrigo Duterte instructed the national office of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to lead the implementation of the anti-poverty programs in the ARMM and other conflictaffected areas found in Regions 9, 10 and 12.

Officials from the ARMM and the TESDA held a consultative and action planning meeting on August 11 in Cotabato City to discuss the initial details of the programs and projects that will be implemented.

HE Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) has expressed desire to meet Environment Secretary Gina Lopez to inform her of the best practices of the big banana companies amid threats that she will ban aerial spraying if she finds out it causes suffering to the communities near plantations.

-ooo INSPIRATION FOR A SUCCESSFUL LIFE COMES FROM GOD: This reflects the story of Rotary International’s Four Way Test. Without the Four Way Test being utilized as the standard by which the officers and employees of a company owned by an American Rotarian were to measure their thoughts, words, and actions, the company went on a losing streak and was ready to fold up in the 1930s.

But t he Rot ar ian, a businessman named Herbert J. Taylor, prayed to God, and asked for His guidance in his search for a guide to right conduct, or some sort of an ethical yardstick which everyone in his company could memorize and apply to what they thought, said, and did. God responded, and inspired Taylor to write the questions that now comprise the Four Way Test.

In the 1940s, after Taylor’s nearly-bankrupt company

made a rebound, Rotary International adopted his guidelines as its Four Way Test, and there was no looking back for Rotary ever since, growing today into the world organization of choice when it comes to charity, with its Clubs numbering around 32,000 worldwide, and with a membership base of 1.2 million Rotarians.

-ooo READING AND OBEYING GOD’S WORD KEY TO SUCCESS: Indeed, there are only two kinds of people in this world, as the predictions I mentioned here could attest. The first kind are the wise people, while the second are the fools. Good Family Man Think a minute…Ever hear someone say, “He’s a good family man.”? But what really is a good family man? Do you ever stop and think, Dad, what your job at home actually is? A family man must do many things, of course; but let’s talk about 3 important responsibilities of a good husband and father.

First, he serves as the main family provider. No one even questioned fifty years ago that it’s a man’s primary responsibility to financially take care of his family and pay their bills. So even though many wives and mothers need to work outside the home, a man should never become lazy and expect his wife to do his job and responsibility of making sure the family’s financial needs are met.

A s econd imp or tant responsibility of a family man is to serve as their leader. It’s often said that “two captains sink the ship,” or “two cooks spoil the broth.”

Dad needs to be wise and responsible enough to make the important decisions for the family, after talking with his wife and children and carefully considering their needs and feelings. Sadly, many men like to be the boss, but they’re selfish and unkind to their own family because their decisions often

-ooo MORE TORNADOES TO HIT RP: The tornado that hit Manila on Sunday, August 14, 2016, will certainly not be the last of its kind. There will be more tornadoes to come to our country, and will not be as harmless as the one that came on Sunday.

Whether we believe or not, this phenomenon of strong winds bringing death and destruction was predicted to happen a long time ago, whether we like it or not.

Where was this prediction made? With all the intense pressures, challenges, trials, not to mention, grave problems and crises we meet these days, the likelihood of teetering into discouragement, if not despair, is quite high. This is when we need to fortify our hope, learning how to look beyond what is here and now to see the hand of God behind everything.

We need to acquire this skill, always asking first for the grace of God. In this way, we don’t suffer unnecessarily, and if we have to suffer, we don’t suffer uselessly.

We should strengthen our faith and hope, feeding them with the charity of God, and disabuse ourselves from relying completely on our reason and other human powers. These definitely cannot cope with everything that we have to face in this life.

As the Catechism teaches, our human reason, our most powerful faculty, while capable of knowing God’s will and ways, is hampered “not only by the impact of the senses and the imagination, but also by disordered appetites which are the consequences of original sin.” (CCC 37) We need to cultivate humility deeply so we can learn to be trusting in God’s providence even if we cannot fully know and understand

his will and ways. Let’s always remember that God is our father who will always love us no matter what. He is full of goodness and mercy.

Being omnipotent, he knows how to derive good from evil that is caused directly by us and allowed

by God in deference to our freedom. But he can write straight with crooked lines.

And if we put ourselves in sync with God’s will and ways, we too could derive good from whatever evil may befall on us.

We really have no reason to fall into discouragement, muchless, despair, no matter how grave and ugly our predicament can be.And that’s because God has given us everything to resolve our problems in his own terms while also respecting our human condition.

Even in the worst scenario when death appears in evitable,things can still turn out for our own good, because with Christ’s redemptive work, the sting of death has been removed.

Thus, we can repeat what St. Paul used to say: “I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. I know how to be a based and I know how to abound. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. I can

do all things in Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4,1113) There’s really no reason for us to fall into some morbid fear or helpless self-pity. We just have to learn how to suffer. And this is always possible as long as we are willing to unite ourselves with Christ in his patience.

Let’s remember that God does not exempt us from falling into some serious, and sometimes insoluble predicaments. That’s because he will always respect the limitations of our nature that can sometimes lead us to some trouble, not to mention, our own freedom that we can always misuse and abuse leading us to sin, the worst evil.

And even if personally we have not sinned or do not seem to deserve a particular burden, we all suffer just the same, due to the sins of men, ours and those of others. We should not be surprised by this and waste time complaining about it.

In fact, it can happen that those who suffer the most are the saintly ones who are especially chosen by God to bear the consequences of the sins of all men. Those who are more Christ-like will certainly share more in the redemptive suffering of Christ. The reverse is also true. One becomes more

Fr. Roy Cimagala Christ-like the more he suffers. In a sense, suffering is a blessing, a privilege.

For sure, the saints are saints precisely because they have taken the same path of suffering that Christ took. Indeed, suffering can be a clear sign of God’s predilection for us, as it has been with Christ who suffered the death on the cross in obedience to his Father’s will.

So, if our predicaments and suffering lead us to a state of helplessness, whether they are physical, financial, or even moral due to our sin, we need to adopt the mind of Christ and the saints and the other characters in the gospel who did all they can to get close to Christ, asking for help. Christ certainly listens and knows what to do. He knows how to convert evil into good, suffering into glory, death into life. roycimagala@gmail.com.

Economists forecast 6.7% GDP in Q2 T HE Aquino administration probably ended on a high note, with the economy expanding 6.7 percent in the second quarter of 2016.

That’s according to a median forecast of 11 economists surveyed by Bloomberg TV Philippines.

BPI economist Nicholas Mapa, one of the 11 surveyed, shared his observations: “If you look at all the leading indicators we use to forecast, electricity sales jumped in the second quarter, quite substantial at 10-11%.”

Another leading indicator they look at, added Mapa, is car sales as reported by the C ar Manufacturers Association or CAMPI. He noted the car segment is up by 20%. “If you look at the commercial vehicle segment, which includes AUVs and SUVs, the sales are through the roof.”

Economists say consumer spending, spurred by remittances from overseas workers and earnings of those working in the local BPO sector, as well as government

spending, continue to drive growth.

RCBC economist Mike Ricafort, for his part, ticked off these factors behind the growth: “First, it’s electionrelated spending which we didn’t have a year ago, then we have a pick-up in government spending, so that should provide a higher growth numerator this year as against the same period last year.”

Still, the forecast is lower than the first-quarter’s impressive 6.9 p ercent finish, as the global economic slowdown proved to be a drag to the country’s trade, trimming even remittance inflows, and pulling down GDP figures.

“The global economic slowdown -- relatively lower commodity particularly oil prices -- may offset whatever positive factors we may have,” said Ricafort. That would be, he said, “in terms of the demand in OFWs and our trading partners as well, especially the developed countries, Mideast countries and other emerging market countries that heavily depend

Economists said there’s still more to look forward to in the second half, especially since the new President has committed to increase government spending on infrastructure to as high as 7% of GDP.

DTI’s FAB LAB Mindanao Shared Service Facility sets launch today at MSU-IIT

A shared service facility that will help people transform their ideas into reality is set to be launched Wednesday, 17 August 2016 at the Mindanao State UniversityIligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City.

“Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory) is a technical prototyping platform for innovation and invention, providing stimulus for local entrepreneurship,” said Lemuel Clark P. Velasco, associate professor and facility manager. “A fab lab is also a platform for learning and innovation: a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, and to invent. But it is not just place, fab lab is a movement where ideas, and innovation happens.”

S e t up a s a s h a re d service facility (SSF) by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), FAB LAB is a digital fabrication laboratory with sophisticated equipment that is open to all students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and the people all over Mindanao to help them transform their ideas to designs and their designs to prototypes which can be

easily manufactured.

The FAB LAB Mindanao team aims to demonstrate the lab and the team’s capabilities in becoming Mindanao’s Center for Innovation and Invention during its 17 August 2016 launch and exhibit. Also to be launched on the same date are the DTI Negosyo Center and Technolog y Business Incubator (TBI).

“Fab Lab is a college, there will be students and academic programs that is designed and developed

to build projects,” Velasco said. “There will be inventors and entrepreneurs that will cultivate, generate new ideas, develop innovation and help the local communities in Mindanao as they develop their products and services.”

It also has workshops and programs that will help the people in generating ideas and innovations, he added.

Mr. Villar, chairman of Starmalls, is confident the company will continue its growth for the rest of the year, as malls are expected to benefit from the growing economy and higher remittances from overseas Filipinos.

“With the integration of our company into Vista Land, the complementary symbiotic relationship and synergies of commercial developments surrounded by residential communities will enable us to achieve higher retail rental rates and higher selling prices, increased sales velocity for the Vista Land residential developments, all while maintaining lower land acquisition and infrastructure costs,” Mr. Villar said in a statement.

AC INDUSTRIAL Technology Holdings, Inc. is poised to expand operations for K T M As i a Mot orc y c l e Manufacturing, Inc. barely a year after commencing production in January 2017, as the former plans to acquire a foreign engine maker to support its venture in the automotive sector.

KTM AG, a partnership between the Ayala Group and KTM Asia, will produce 10,000 motorcycles initially from a new facility in Laguna starting January next year, AC Industrials President and Chief Executive Officer Arthur R. Tan said in a media briefing in Makati City on Tuesday.

AC Industrials, formerly Ayala Automotive Holdings, Inc., will house the manufacturing operations of the partnership along with the existing and future assets of listed Integrated Micro-Electronics, Inc. (IMI) in the manufacturing and automotive spaces.

“January we’ll starting pro ducing already ; the expansion by the end of

the following year,” Mr. Tan said, noting the production capacity of the Laguna facility operated by IMI will double to 20,000 units a year.

“We’ve planned it already that we’re going to grow,” Mr. Tan added.

The partnership is investing $2 million to $3 million for the production of 10,000 small motorcycle units initially, with Ayala shouldering 66% of costs arising from the ongoing construction of the factory in Laguna.

The production line is expandable to produce 20,000 motorcycles a year.

Mr. Tan, however, noted the partnership plans to expand manufacturing capacity beyond that number.

Asked if the Ayala Group will have to build another factory, Mr. Tan said: “It depends. We’re looking at also moving eventually into an industrial site and we’re thinking maybe moving north to the Porac area or to the Clark area (in Pampanga).”

HE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is set to open a PHP4.9 million worth fabric ation lab orator y in Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) next week.

DTI Regional Operations Group (ROG) head Undersecretar y Zenaida Maglaya said the Fab Lab Mindanao is part of the Shared Service Facility (SSF) Program of the department.

This will be a digital fablab which will enable students,

researchers, entrepreneurs and designers in the area to transform their ideas into prototypes designs.

Among the equipment that will be provided by DTI in the Fab Lab Mindanao are sets of laser cutters, small milling machine with rotary,

print and cut machine, 3D printer, big milling machine, and sewing and embroidery machine.

The MSU-IIT, on the other hand, committed PHP1.4 million for laboratory renovation and support equipment while

the Department of Science and Technology will provide PHP1.6 million worth of 3D scanner, 3D printer, and solid work standards.

The Fab Lab Mindanao is one of the seven centers in the innovation ecosystem in MSU-IIT. The institute will also host Negosyo Center, technology business incubator called Ideya, Bamboo Technology Resource Center, Ceramic Training Center, Intellectual P r o p e r t y Un i t , a n d a

mentoring and learning hub for students called Innohive.

The SSF Program of DTI aims to increase the production capacity and improve the quality of products of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for them to be able to compete both in the local and international markets.

Most of these SSF projects are in provinces to support local MSMEs, in line with the Duterte administration goal of equitable growth. (PNA)

MANILA -The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Singapore, urges new Filipino workers to become entrepreneurs through the recent orientation seminar on financial education and investment prospects at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Singapore.

According to Philippine Commercial Counselor to Singapore Glenn Peñaranda, the seminar aimed to emphasize among Filipino workers, responsible manage me nt of mone y through savings, encourage entrepreneurship or investments while working abroad.

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were advised to explore opportunities in franchising especially in the food industry given its phenomenal growth. Sixty percent of the franchise concepts in the Philippines are in the fo o d s ec tor.

Peñaranda also discussed food trends in the country, mentioning that food is the biggest part of the Filipino household consumption and offers many opportunities.

Office workers are at risk of developing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) due to the repetitive wok activities and awkward postures which may cause pain during work or at rest. There is strong epidemiological evidence that physical demands of work can be associated with increased reports of back symptoms, aggravation of symptoms and injuries (Ferguson et.

Al, 1997). According to the World Health Organization, industrialized countries have about 1/3 of health related absences from work due to Musculoskeletal Disorders.

This data strengthens the need to inform the office workers of the nature of MSD and the necessar y pre c aut ionar y steps to prevent and reduce the occurrence of work-related MSD as this can hinder their productivity and can cause log-term musculoskeletal disorders.

Individual’s health, fitness and strengths can affect the ability to perform tasks. It is essential that in order for the office workers to carry out daily work activities with ease, free from discomforts, worker’s health and safety issues should be taken into consideration in relation to performing his/her job. It is important to note that one of the major occupational safety and health issue is workedrelated musculoskeletal disorder.

In d e t e r m i n i n g t h e occurrence of work-related MSD, the first pain is a signal that muscles and tendons should rest and recover.

Some workers experience sensations of ‘pins and needles’, numbness, skin color changes, joint stiffness, muscle lightness and redness and swelling of affected area.

Furthermore, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health Safety (2014) has identified three stages of work-related MSD namely: - Early stage where aching and tiredness of affected area occurs during the work shift

and disappears at night and on days off.

- Intermediate stages where aching and tiredness occur early in the work shift and persist at night.

- Late stage where aching, fatigue and weakness persist at rest which results to the inability to sleep and perform light duties.

Prevention is an effective means of combating workrelated MSD’s if action is taken early through in the process. When movements and postures are performed over prolonged periods, working conditions should be changed. Proper repositioning and reducing repetitive movements can help in preventing workrelated MSD’s and office workers should be educated on self-exercises they can do to prevent work-related MSD’s. Prevention options like self-exercising programs that can be performed by workers at their own time and place and it’s practice should be supported by the employer and employee. Below are some of the activities to prevent MSD’s.

Position Suggestions - Joints must be in neutral position and it must be stretched to the least possible extent.

- Keep work close to the body thus preventing outstretching of arms.

- A twisted trunk strains the back and causes undesirable stress to the spine.

- Alternate postures a s we l l a s m ove m e nt s for prolonged posture an repetitive movements.

- Avoid excessive reaches.

Limit forward and sideways to avoid having to bend over or twist trunk - Limit the weight of the load lifted.

A common and collective effort should be adhered to by the employers, employees, and regulating bodies in practicing safety measures to determine and prevent the occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. It is the employer’s statutory and moral responsibility to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the worker’s to take reasonably practicable steps to prevent avoidable injuries (Waddell et. al, 2001).

Antig noted that some advo cates are claiming that aerial spraying brings environmental and health hazards to nearby communities.

He explained that agricultural aircrafts that large banana companies are utilizing are equipped with global positioning system (GPS) that allows them to spray on targeted areas and eliminate risk of drifting away to nearby communities.

Antig said banana companies are spending so much on aerial spraying that they could not afford to waste it. Each aircraft can cover 200 hectares an hour as compared to drone that covers only 2.2 hectares an hour.

“Our planes are equipped with GPS, a mechanism that will open and shut off when near the buffer zones,” he said.

The PBGEA head said the banana industry has been operating in Mindanao for 50 years but no clear reports of deaths were recorded due to aerial spraying. “Contrary to reports that a lot of people die, they could not provide names,” he said of the industry’s critics.

“We’ve b e e n a s k i ng the same question to the Department of Health, and a lot of non-government organizations (NGOs). They cannot come up with names,” he said.

Antig said he wondered why the industry has become the subject criticism as compared to other crops that use more chemicals.

Vincent K. Pelaez has pointed out that Moresco II has not prepared any contingency in the event that the Supreme Court (SC) ruled against its petition to grant real property tax exemption.

Moresco II representatives headed by general manager Ronel Cañada attended the SP regular session last Monday supposedly to seek help from the Sanggunian on the matter but were instead rebuked by provincial board members.

Mr. Pelaez said the SC decision had forced the Moresco II board to loan around P40 million so it could pay its real property taxes that have never been collected for the past 25 years.

It can be recalled that Moresco II had filed for tax exemption owing to its status as a cooperative but after a long legal battle, the SC had decided with finality on the issue.

In accordance with the provisions of the PDIC Charter, the last day for filing deposit insurance claims in the closed Rural Bank of Cabadbaran (Agusan), Inc. is on July 30, 2018. After this date, PDIC as Deposit Insurer shall no longer accept any Rural Bank of Cabadbaran (Agusan), Inc. deposit insurance claims.

The PDIC said that all valid claims will be paid. As a rule, a claim is valid if it is filed by a depositor or claimant with valid identification, and such claim is duly evidenced by a passbook, certificate of time deposit or other evidence of deposit, or otherwise supported by the records of the bank. PDIC, as Receiver, has the authority to adjust the interest rate on unpaid interests on deposits of a bank if such rate is deemed unreasonable.

Meanwhile, claims of persons or entities against the assets of the bank must be filed with the Deputy Receiver of the bank either at the bank premises not later than the third week of August 2016 or at the PDIC Public Assistance Center (PAC), up to October 3, 2016. Claims filed after October 3, 2016 shall no longer be considered.

For depositors of the bank with deposits that exceed PHP500,000, the claim for the uninsured portion of their deposits is already deemed filed with the Deputy Receiver of the bank upon receipt of the maximum deposit insurance payment of PHP500,000 from PDIC as Deposit Insurer. Thus, there is no need for the depositor to file a separate claim for the uninsured portion. The prescriptive date for claims on uninsured deposits shall be the same as the prescriptive date for filing of deposit insurance claim or on July 30, 2018.

RECORD GROWTH Earnings of Golden Haven, a developer of memorial parks, soared 49% to P40.08 million in the second quarter, from P26.95 million in the same period a year ago.

This pushed its six-month net income 23% higher to P84 million, from P68.2 million a year ago.

Revenues, which are mostly from real estate sales, increased by 36% to P217 million in the April to June period, and by 30% to P418.85 million in the six-month period.
