Stable supply THE government is committed to stabilizing prices by augmenting the food supply and ensuring that the supply chains of goods, especially food, will be unhampered during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) period, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said.

The Philippine S t at i s t i c s Au t h o r i t y reported Tuesday that the country’s headline inflation rate fell to 4.5 percent in March 2021 from 4.7 percent in the previous month. This is the first easing of the inflation rate since September 2020.

Banana industry slowed down by excessive fees T Thank you for trusting us!

HE slack in tbe country's banana industry has been attributed to existing high government fees and the lack of local ordinances, the Pilipino Banana Growers and Entrepreneurs Association (PBGEA) said yesterday.

"We call on the government to bring down excessive fees and streamline the processing of required customs duties," s ai d PB G E A e xe c ut ive director Stephen Antig.

It would also help to have simpler procedures for the compliance of stakeholders, Antig said.

Specifically, Antig cited the possible reduction in lodgment fees with the Bureau of Customs, as well as the "suspension of wharfage fees until the situation gets better".

MALUNGON, Sarangani -Tourist arrivals in Sarangani province have been increasing since the last quarter of 2020 despite the restrictions meant to curb the spread of COVID-19, an official said on Wednesday.

neighboring Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Cotabato City and Davao Region, reached 186,770.

COTABATO City – Muslim religious leaders in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) announced Monday that they have formed teams of moon seers to determine the exact commencement of Ramadhan this month.

Grand Mufti Abuhurairah A. Udasan said that the observation

teams will be deployed across the BARMM on April 11 for the task.

The BARMM comprises the cities of Marawi, Lamitan, and Cotabato; and the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi; and the also 63 villages in six towns of North

Cotabato province.

Udasan said the Darul Ifta (House of Opinion) in the BARMM will make the official announcement at about 8 p.m. on April 11.

“If the moon is visible on April 11, fasting will commence on April 12,” Udasan said in a statement released here Monday.

It has been a very long week but surely a worthwhile one.

So much learnings. So much discoveries. And so much encouragement as well. As we continue to face and hurdle challenges that this pandemic brought to our education system, this one-week virtual training is such a huge support.

The first topic for this day was about “Digital Poetry: A Collaborative Performance Project”. It is good to learn

Digital Poetry especially in this technological age. But it is not only just because we need to follow the technological trend but also because we need to retain the importance of the freedom of self-expression.

We know that writing a poetry is not only an art but also an outlet for self-expression. It is very timely during this time of pandemic. We all experience a lot of negativities, isolation, and frustrations and writing could be a very good way to let all these negativities out from our system especially for our dear learners.

“Technology Integration and Materials Preparation in English Language Arts” was the second topic in the morning of today’s session. This is also very technological. We may not yet be able to apply this right away especially that now online teaching is not yet that very much possible in the publicschool system but it is indeed a very good preparation as we continue this distance mode of learning.

We heard about “Hour of Code (Programming for Women)” and “Creating Interactive Learning Materials using Scratch Animation”.

Again, the topics focused on utilizing the technological tools. The speakers were very much well-versed about their topics. The demonstration that they performed caught our attention and we can easily follow through. Even with the limited time they had, they were still able to deliver it well. Same with the other technological tools we learned from the previous talks, we may not yet fully implement this kind of tool in teaching this school year but it is a very good preparation. As we continue to make forward steps for this peculiar school year, we also continue to learn and keep encouraging one another.

Together, we sail on. Together, we will rise. Together, we unite.

Shakey’s posts P215-M income after two quarters of losses

HAKEY’S PIZZA Asia Ventures, Inc. (SPAVI) reported a net income of P215 million for the fourth quarter of 2020, which was also boosted by tax benefits due to the company’s negative profitability for the year following the losses it incurred.

“We are pleased by the improvements we saw towards yearend, which gave us the confidence to further invest in future growth,

readying ourselves to better compete in the ‘new normal’ whilst creating jobs amidst the Philippines’ tough economic environment,” SPAVI President and Chief Executive Officer Vicente L. Gregorio said in a statement on Monday.

In the first quarter of 2020, the company reported a net income of P114 million. The company swung to losses in the middle of the year, with P167

million incurred in the second quarter and P171.95 million lost in the third quarter.

SPAVI’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) amounted to P400 million in the fourth quarter, improving from the P6 million seen in the previous quarter.

The company said its system-wide sales for the period grew by 33% from the previous

quarter to P1.8 billion from P1.4 billion.

SPAVI attributed the increase in sales to the holiday season, increased dine-in transactions, and deliveries.

For 2020, SPAVI incurred a net loss of P247 million, down by over 70% from the consolidated net income of P865 million earned in the previous year.

Teaching Through a Pandemic

Conversations about teaching during the coronavirus pandemic have spelled out concerns and anxieties: What will we do if the schools close for months?

How can I shift to online learning if we’re closing tomorrow, or even in a few hours? What about children who have no internet access, or who will be required,?What if, in the end, the school systems decide that online learning is working just fine, and never reopen?

There are creative teachers providing strategies as fast as the obstacles appeared.

At the highest level, a shift in mindset would be required—even the most optimistic educators conceded the point.

There are plenty of strategies and tactics but here are the crucial emotional and psychological issues needed to teach in this new paradigm.

Accept the extraordinary. We're all operating in the shadow of a global pandemic, and it is disorienting and limiting. Business as usual is unrealistic.

The real “points to consider” are not “the strict adherence to ‘regular’ conditions and norms but how to provide a rich experience to all learners who are now without ‘traditional’ teachers standing beside them in classes.

Reduce the workload for you and your students. If your school allows it, you should plan to do less. Students won’t be able to work as productively, anyway—your own life and family need added care.

What would normally take you one class period to teach in the classroom will probably take you twice as long..

Humans are social animals. Working

from home, or worse, from quarantine, is isolating and often depressing for both teachers and students. Make a concerted effort to speak to other colleagues and trusted professionals to provide emotional and psychological context to your work. Teaching at this moment is extraordinarily hard, and you’ll need the virtual company of people who are experiencing what you are.

And don’t forget to “reach out to students as often as you can. Or you can facilitate peer-to-peer communication.

Your work will be hard, but there are students facing more severe challenges. Students with no internet or no computer will need support, as will those with learning differences or other circumstances that make distance learning especially difficult.

Full-year EBITDA totaled P635 million, declining by nearly 68% from P1.97 billion seen in the previous year.

“On a same-store basis, excluding the impact of closed stores, sales were down 30% year on year,” the company said without disclosing specific figures.

Total sales for the year amounted to P6.6 billion, which the company said is 64% of its 2019 sales.

“We are hopeful that dine-in continues to recover this year, but are nonetheless managing the fact

that guests will likely continue to need convenient and flexible out-of-store options,” Mr. Gregorio said.

SPAVI is planning to restart a store network expansion strategy that was initially put in the backburner due to the pandemic. Stores from this project will require smaller investment requirements compared to its traditional stores so its payback periods are short, while returns are high.

It is also looking to build locations which will have Shakey’s, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, and R&B Milk Tea stores in one location.

The company is also planning to launch “ghost kitchens or kitchen extensions” for its delivery businesses with a “31 Minute, If It’s Late, It’s Free” promo in selected Metro Manila areas.

“Moving into 2021, the ability to stay nimble and adapt to the ever-changing environment will be of utmost importance,” Mr. Gregorio said.

For example, our accent and way of speaking shows what country and region we come from, as well as the kind of family in which we were raised. But most importantly, our tongue shows what is inside our heart and mind.

We usually talk about the things we enjoy and care most about—whether it is money, family, friends, hobbies, sports, parties, gossip, politics, religion or other things.

European countries scramble to tamp down latest virus surge

European countries scrambled Monday to tamp down a surge in COVID-19 cases and ramp up vaccinations, hoping to spare hospitals from becoming overwhelmed by the pandemic's latest deadly wave of infections.

The crush of coronavirus patients has been relentless for hospitals in Poland, where daily new infections hit records of over 35,000 on two recent days and the government ordered new restrictions to prevent large gatherings over the long Easter weekend.

France's health minister warned that the number of intensive care unit patients could match levels from a year ago.

But in a sign of the disparities from one country to the next, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that barbers, gyms and outdoor bar and restaurant patios would be able to open next week after the country reported progress with vaccines and its recent lockdown. Meanwhile, the U.S. vaccination campaign kept accelerating, with 40 percent of the nation's adult population receiving at least one dose.

On Sunday, coronavirus patients filled almost all of the 120 beds at the County Hospital of Bochnia, 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the southern city of Krakow.

One patient, 82-year-old Edward Szumanski, voiced concern that some people still refuse to see the virus that has killed over 2.8 million people worldwide as a threat.

About 55,000 of those deaths have occurred in Poland.

"The disease is certainly there, and it is very serious.

Those who have not been through it, those who do not

have it in their family, may be deluding themselves, but the reality is different," he said.

The more contagious and more aggressive virus variant identified in Britain is fueling much of the increase in Europe. Meanwhile, voters in many countries are angry at the European Union's strategy but also at their own governments' handling of the pandemic and the failure to prevent repeated spikes in infections.

France's health minister, Olivier Veran, warned Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients in the country's intensive care units might match the level of the first crisis a year ago. Speaking on TF1 television, he said the country could approach the ICU saturation levels of April 2020, when French ICUs held more than 7,000 virus patients, many of whom were in temporary facilities because demand far outstripped the country's pre-pandemic ICU capacity.

Veran expressed hope that France's new infections could peak this week thanks to new partial lockdown measures.

After long resisting calls for a new lockdown, the French government closed schools and shuttered all non-essential stores nationwide and imposed travel restrictions for four weeks.

"We will manage," Veran said.

The British government announced Monday that all adults and children will be able to have routine coronavirus tests twice a week as a way to stamp out new outbreaks. The tests are being introduced as Johnson announces the next steps in the country's road map out of its three-month lockdown.

Britain has recorded almost

127,000 coronavirus deaths, the highest toll in Europe. But both infections and deaths have fallen sharply during the lockdown and since the start of a vaccination campaign that so far has given a first dose to more than 31 million people, or 6 in 10 adults.

Authorities in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, introduced tighter lockdown restrictions following a recent spike in virus cases. All schools in the city of 3 million people will be closed for the next two weeks, and only people with special passes will be allowed on public transport.

"The hospitals are almost full. The situation is difficult," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Elsewhere, North Macedonia has delayed mass immunization amid vaccine shortages as its hospitals fill up following record new COVID-19 infections and deaths last week.

In Greece, which is struggling to emerge from a deep recession, most retail stores were allowed to reopen Monday despite an ongoing surge in COVID-19 infections.

Lockdown measures have been in force since early November, although shops opened briefly around the Christmas season.

The prolonged closures piled pressure on the economy.

Serbia also has eased measures against the coronavirus despite high numbers of infections and a slowdown in vaccinations.

The government on Monday allowed bars and restaurants to serve guests outside at reduced capacity and with respect of social distancing rules.

In the U.S., a top public health official said young people are driving the latest uptick in COVID-19 cases, as the increasing rate of

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cited the increasing spread of variants as well as a rise in youth sports and extracurricular activities as factors contributing to the steady increase in cases over the last four weeks.

But Walensky pointed to positive developments among seniors, who are the most vulnerable age group. Senior virus deaths have fallen to their lowest level since the early fall.

More than 75% of those age 65 or older nationally have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and nearly 55% are fully vaccinated.

"What we're seeing is both a decrease in emergency department visits as well as hospitalizations associated with that demographic," she said Monday.

More than 23% of all adults in the U.S. are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Many states are making vaccines available to younger demographics. Starting Mon d ay, any a du lt i n Florida is eligible to receive the vaccine. In addition, the state announced that 16- and 17-year-olds also could get the vaccine with parental permission.

Demanding on ourselves, tolerant on others THAT'S how we should be with respect to ourselves and to the others. We need to be strict with ourselves but always accommodating with the others. First, because the person we would know best would simply be ourselves, while with the others we ought to be more restrained in our judgments.

In fact, we need to be always nice to others, even if they are not nice to us. We should always give them the benefit of the doubt. Besides, we really would not know them very well. Most of the time, we can only base our impressions of the others mainly on appearances which can never give us a good over-all picture of how they really are.

It’s very likely that we hardly would have t he inside story of their life.

And whatever traces of other people’s inside story we may have are most likely unreliable, based only on hearsay and gossip.

But, yes, with ourselves, we should be very demanding.

We should be strict to adhere to the difference between good and evil, pursuing the former no matter how little it is, and avoiding the latter no matter how slight it may be. But such strict adherence should not make us judgmental of the others.

If ever we have some observations that point to a certain weakness, failure, mistake or sin of the others, let’s remember that those are observations only which can be at best tentative. And rather than be quick to judge, let us focus more on how we can help them.

That attitude would indicate that we are still clear about the difference between right and wrong.

Of course, this difference should be based on our identification with Christ who is the ultimate judge to know what is right and wrong.

Let us remember that we see and judge things the way we are. If we are simply by ourselves, relying only on our estimation of what is right

and wrong, then definitely we cannot go far. But if we try our best to be identified with Christ, then we can see and judge things the way Christ would see and judge them.

And so, if we are truly like Christ, our strictness in knowing the difference between right and wrong would not lead us to be judgmental, but rather to be charitable, finding ways of how to help the others.

That’s because that is how Christ treats others.

PH external debt ratios lower on prudent policy

THE Philippine government’s improved debt guidelines have resulted in the drop of the country’s external debt ratios compared to around two decades ago, the Department of Finance (DOF) said.

In an economic bulletin, the DOF said the proportion of the country’s foreign debt to gross national income (GNI) rose to 25.2 percent as of end-2020 compared to 20.2 percent in the previous year due to higher government liabilities.

However, last year’s figure was significantly lower at 30.9 percentage points than the 56.1 percent in 2000, or when the country was recovering from the impact of the Asian financial crisis.

Amidst the year-on-year uptick, the DOF said the country’s latest external debt ratio is better than the 28.95 percent average among six Asian countries in 2019 based on World Bank (WB) data.

WB data show that 2019 external debt as a percentage of GNI of China is 14.77 percent; Indonesia, 19.74 percent; Philippines, 20.19 percent; Thailand, 34.42 percent; India, 37.03

percent; and Vietnam, 47.56 percent.

The DOF said the Philippines’ prudent debt policy has enabled the country to strengthen its defenses against external shocks like the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

“This is one of the reasons for the strong confidence of investors in the Philippine economy.

Nevertheless, we must continue to prudently manage our fiscal situation and continue to observe fiscal responsibility,” it added. (PNA)

Children need school meals to stay healthy and ready to learn

World Health facts show that 73 million vulnerable primary school aged children are in need of school meals’ and 370 million children missed school meals due to COVID-19 related school.

Millions of children around the world go to school on an empty stomach. There is hunger and this should be addressed by governments because it affects their concentration and ability to learn.

Thus, we praise the World Food Programme (WFP) for supporting school feeding and health activities. The WFP has been working with more than 100 countries to organize sustainable national school feeding programs. It’s ultimate goal is to encourage and facilitate national government to adopt these programs.

R ep or ts s aid t hat 44 countries have already adopted the WFP programs. In 2019, 17.3 million schoolchildren received nutritious meals and snacks from WFP in

5 9 c o u n t r i e s . Wo r k i n g with governments to build capacity, WFP helped bolster the national school feeding programs of 65 countries, benefitting a further 39 million children.

Good health and proper nutrition boost children’s l e a r n i n g c ap a c it y a n d performance. It, broadens their educational opportunities.

School feeding programs act as an incentive for families to enroll and keep their children in school. This relieves parents from having to budget for lunches. School meals also augment incomes and help families alleviate poverty.

School meals represent 10 percent of the income of poor and vulnerable households, a significant saving for families with more than one child according to World Health Organization.

Experts say that in benefitting children and their families, school feeding programs promote health and help build ‘human capital’—the

sum of a population’s health, skills, knowledge, experience and habits.

When scho ol feeding programs are linked to local smallholder farm production, they benefit local economies as well. In certain contexts, they can help build trust in national education systems and foster social inclusion.

WFP’s new school feeding strategy, published in January 2020, reaffirm the organization’s commitment to ensure that all primary schoolchildren have access to nutritious meals at school. WFP works with partners to ensure that meals are accompanied by a broader package of health and nutrition services, such as deworming, health screenings, vaccinations and WASH (water, hygiene and sanitation training).

WFP helps to strengthen systems and provides technical assistance, improving the scale and quality of national programs and supporting governments in innovating and testing new approaches.

In a Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report released on March 12, fresh bananas recorded the worst dip among the top 10 major commodity groups in terms of the value of exports at -46.9 percent as of January 2021.

Manufactured goods followed at -12.8 percent; machinery and transport equipment, -11.9 percent; and coconut oil, -11.7 percent.

"The industry is surviving t houg h it has a lot of problems," he added.

PSA data also showed that the value of banana exports in January fell by 47 percent to $84.659 million from $159.454 million in 2020.

"Planting bananas is still okay but the size should be economical and you should have a ready market," Antig said.

Most banana plantations are located in Mindanao, with the Davao region accounting for 39 percent of the country’s total banana production, followed by Northern Mindanao and Soccsksargen with 19 percent and 12 percent, respectively, according to PSA data.

In a r e c e nt v i r t u a l briefer of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Director for High-Value Crops Program U-Nicholls Manalo said there is a stimulus fund to revive the banana sector.

He attributed the decline in produce to the spread of Fusarium wilt, widely known as the Panama disease, a soilborne fungal disease that initially attacks the roots of banana plants.

The disease turns the leaves of banana plants from green to yellow before eventually wilting.

The facility also has a Bio Safety Laboratory Level 2 section, which can test specimens for traces of Covid-19. He also said that even when the pandemic is over, the center can help address other cases of reemerging diseases such as tuberculosis, among others.

"Since NMMC is considered an Apex hospital, and Cagayan de Oro is the regional center, it would be best that this facility would be put into good use," he said, referring to NMMC's important role in handling Covid-19 cases not only in the city but also to referred patients within Region 10.

Dr. Lorraine Nery said that the facility can "diffuse" the Covid-19 surge, especially individuals who arrive from the National Capital Region.

"We don´t want a second wave or surge of Covid-19 cases if possible (similar to the National Capital Region), but we already have measures in place. Right now, we have fewer isolation units due to the decline in cases (but they remain on standby). And of course, more private hospitals increased their bed capacity to accommodate positive cases," Nery said.

NMMC liaison officer, Dr. Bernard Rocha, said they have protocols in place to deal with the surge, including dropping certain services to accommodate more Covid-19 patients.

"The CEREID facility in San Simon is perfect for us in terms of adding 72 beds which we can add more depending on what we receive. God forbid if a surge does occur, the public can be assured that the local health sector anticipated and is ready to handle it. The buildings will also harness solar energy from photovoltaic panels to be installed on the roof of the towers.
