Briefly Energy meeting THE Department of Energy (DOE) is hosting the 35th ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Manila in September, 2017 to mark the 50th year of the founding of the ASEAN. Ten ASEAN energy ministers will attend the official ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEFB) and Powertrends 2017, the largest and longest running international exhibition and energy event in the Philippines organized by Leverage International in cooperation with the DOE and the ASEAN Center for Energy. The AMEM is followed by associated meetings with ASEAN’s Dialogue partners, including: Australia, China, EU, India, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia, and USA.
Investment scam TANDAG City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Surigao del Sur Provincial Office has warned the public against fraudulent investment schemes operating in the province. Based on the documents sent to Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the KAPPA or Kabus Padatoon and Programme Blessing for Filipino People Association Incorporation are not authorized to solicit investments from the public. The DTI advisory stated that KAPPA, founded by Joel Apolinario, is currently operating in Bislig City. Accordingly, they were collecting investments from the public with a promise that the 30 percent of one’s investment will be paid back every month until forever to their client.

HE Japanese government will extend 771 million yen (P348.8 million) grant aid to the Philippines for implementing an energy project in conflict-affected Bangsamoro area over the next three years, as it continues to provide support to peace and development in Mindanao. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) on Thursday signed the grant aid for the Project for Improvement of Equipment for Power Distribution in Bangsamoro. power/PAGE 11

FINANCE Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the Duterte administration s upbeat about the early conclusion of talks on the proposed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, as the deal is seen to increase Philippine export destinations. “We look forward to continue the discussions on the promotion of free trade partnership via the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership where China is also taking the lead. SURIGAO City — Local environment officials and advocates expressed both wonderment and anger over why a large-scale nickel mining firm which has been penalized several times for environmental violations was spared from the suspension and closure orders imposed by Environment Secretary Regina Lopez. Roger de Dios, regional director of Mines and Geosciences Bureau for Caraga Region (MGB-Caraga), described Century Peak Corporation (CPC), which operates in Loreto town in Dinagat Island as a “recidivist environmental violator.”
In a February 22 memorandum order, de Dios barred CPC from transporting and shipping ore for the company’s failure to meet its “social and environmental obligations.” In his order addressed to CPC president Wilfredo Keng, de Dios noted that CPC has not “satisfactorily complied” with its “social and environmental commitments” since 2015. It was not the first time that CPC had received a warning from MGB-Caraga for its environmental record and inability to implement spared/PAGE 11
