Briefly Cloud seeding LIGHT to moderate rainfall begins to pour in Northern Mindanao since last week, the region most affected by El Niño, following cloud-seeding operations, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). In a statement issued by the department, engineer Henry Cacayan, head of the cloud-seeding team of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), explained that the on-going operation in the region follows up on 45 hours of seeding costing P2.4 million that started earlier this year. Operations were suspended before Easter. Mr. Cacayan added that the operation is expected to bring down temperatures in the region, in turn helping increase water levels in irrigation dams and providing more water to standing crops.
Mining taxes THE Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announced the release of the 40-percent share of Local Government Units (LGUs) from mining taxes in the amount of P233.8 million. The amount pertains to the LGU share from excise taxes collected from the mining industry between December 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2014. “We have issued the allotment and corresponding cash allocation for the release of the lawful share of LGUs in the proceeds from the utilization and development of minerals in their respective areas,” DBM Secretary Florencio B. Abad said. “The funds are now released based on the Joint Certification of mining tax collections issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Treasury, as well as the schedule of the corresponding shares of recipient LGUs.” Abad said the funds released are charged against the P1.5 billion appropriated for the purpose in the current year’s National Budget.
